This is a rather long episode, running at just about one hour. The Guangxi Massacre is one of those dark chapters from the Cultural Revolution. Down in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, it was particularly dark. I was listening to Stanford Professor of Anthropology Andrew G. Walder on the New Books Network discussing his 2023 book covering this topic. That gave me the initial inspiration. Dr. Walder's book and a few others are very disturbing to read. I didn't dwell on some of the more gory and grotesque parts of this story. Hoowever, the books are all rather free with their descriptions of some of the atrocities committed. There's one excerpt I did include in the Patreon and CHP Premium audio. But I won't be including it in the regular CHP feed. This episode is particularly interesting because it involves a province other than the usual suspects along the coast. And it stars Wei Guoqing 韦国清, someone I'm guessing doesn't ring a bell. Let me know what you think. This was a painful episode to research and present.   Suggested Reading: Zheng Yi, “Scarlet Memorial: Tales Of Cannibalism In Modern China  https://a.co/d/89TkvH6 Andrew G. The Resilient Recruiter
How to Attract Top Talent with Location-Specific Value Propositions, with Lisa Walder, Ep #259

The Resilient Recruiter

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2025 49:24

If you're struggling to hire high-performing recruiters across multiple cities or regions, the issue might not be your comp plan—it's your value proposition. In this episode, I sit down with Lisa Dixon of FIFTEEN WEST to unpack a strategy that more recruitment agency owners need to use: customizing your EVP (Employee Value Proposition) based on location. Lisa shares hard-won insights from helping dozens of UK recruitment firms expand into the U.S. market. She reveals what actually moves the needle when it comes to attracting top talent, from wellness perks in New York to parking subsidies in Houston. If you want to build a high-performing team across multiple geographies, this episode is a must-listen. Episode Outline and Highlights [03:25] Lisa shares how they founded FIFTEEN WEST. [09:45] Discussion on strategies for US Market entry. [18:59] Compensation differences and challenges between the UK & US recruitment markets. [29:59] An Attractive employee value proposition to attract the best talent. [32:57] Discussion on tech stack and offshoring certain delivery functions as an option for recruitment companies. [37:55] How 11 Investments recently acquired FIFTEEN WEST. [46:27] Aha moments: Key learnings from working with a bigger business that has been further in the journey. Strategies When Expanding to the US Market As a rec-to-rec firm, FIFTEEN WEST initially focused on helping UK-headquartered businesses to expand to America. They have eventually moved to the US as a strategic effort to become an embedded recruitment partner across their clients' global operations. Doing so is not easy, so I wanted to pick the strategies that Lisa and her team applied when transitioning to the US market. If you are also planning to establishing an office physically within the US, below are the things that Lisa learned that you may want to keep in mind: Leadership Deployment: One proven method was sending a founder or long-tenured employee to launch the U.S. office, ensuring the company's DNA and values were transplanted effectively. This model was described as the most successful—helping set culture, hire locally, and scale faster. Tailored Unique Value Proposition: One main differences that Lisa pointed out is the commission and base salary structure. To get the best recruiters and talents, they adapted their commission structures and incentives for the U.S. market, realizing early on that what worked in the UK didn't translate directly. Market Culture Adaptation: Lisa recognized that the U.S. market is more pragmatic and transactional—clients care less about past success and more about current candidates delivery. Overall, Lisa emphasized cultural embedding, leadership presence, and operational agility to navigate the distinct dynamics of the American recruitment market.

Today, we're live! I'm at the Orthodox Women's Torah Leadership Convening with Ann Pava and Elizabeth Walder, trailblazers of Jewish philanthropy, strategically growing the field of Orthodox Jewish women's Torah leadership. As we sit onstage at the Convening that Ann and Elizabeth made happen, they reveal how they choose where to invest, and how they go forward as partners with those organisations lucky enough to receive their help. We marvel at how far this field has come - programmes in learning and leadership that are now available for women and girls, and positions held by women that were traditionally reserved for men. We discuss the challenges for Orthodox women seeking a career in Torah leadership as well the hurdles we've overcome, and the work still to do in this field. Anne Pava is the president of Micah Philanthropies. An activist, philanthropist, thought leader and community builder, she loves to mentor and empower women, especially to lead, and to make the world a better place and has been pivotally to the Prizmah Centre for Jewish Day Schools, the Jewish Federations of North America, the Hebrew High School of New England and the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusets. She is involved in many other boards and has won an award for outstanding women philanthropists. Elizabeth Walder is president and executive director of the Walder Foundation and the board chair of Walder Operations. She is a lawyer by training and led a multicultural immigration law practise helping thousands of immigrants reach their full potential. Later she served as the chief sustainability officer at IDT before establishing The Walder Foundation with her husband. Through its Jewish Life pillar the Walder Foundation founds many initiatives to empower Orthodox women's Torah leadership and Elizabeth was awarded the Hinda Institute's Heroines of Hope award in 2022 given to a visionary broad-minded philanthropist who personifies leadership and compassion. Special thanks to Dr. Elana Stein Hain, who organized the convening. (You can hear Jo's Women's Gallery interview with her here.) Listen to Jo's interview with Rabbanit Michelle Cohen Farber here.

Art by:- The Twins by Logan Feliciano - Walder Frey by Amok Link utili:1) https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/1gtbbs/spoilers_all_the_future_of_house_frey/2) https://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php?/topic/140537-frey-civil-war/3) https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/eza67x/spoilers_extended_frey_civil_war/4) https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/16mqp1/spoilers_all_complete_guide_to_westerosi/5) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVW9duzchdc&list=PLCsx_OFEYH6uxV3fW2GqUxivrq6VQsZMc&index=36) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdngFZrG4pQ7) https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/1fax6qi/spoilers_extended_theory_the_fall_of_the_house_of/8) https://warsandpoliticsoficeandfire.wordpress.com/2016/02/19/heirs-in-the-shadows-the-ward-at-rosby/Supportate il canale in cambio di contenuti esclusivi: https://www.patreon.com/LaCittadellaQui trovate tutti i link del canale e dei suoi host: https://linktr.ee/LaCittadella

"With the benefit of hindsight, it is clear that 1949 was actually the beginning, not the end, of the Chinese revolution." Building from this premise, Andrew G. Walder's new book looks at the ways that China was transformed in the 1950s in order to understand why and how Mao's decisions and initiatives - among those of other leaders - had the effects that they did. Written for a broad reading audience, China Under Mao: A Revolution Derailed (Harvard University Press, 2015)focuses on a core theme: the results of Mao's initiatives were often "unintended, unanticipated, and unwanted," by Mao himself, the party leadership, and the broader population. To help readers understand why this is important and how it happened, the first part of Walder's book offers a detailed and compelling account of the Communist Party's road to power and the legacy of this struggle for what happened after, including a military mobilization that formed the bureaucratic foundation for the new Chinese state, an organization oriented toward discipline and unity, and a flawed economic system imported from the Soviet Union. (Walder pays special attention to the differences in party tactics for mobilizing the cities and countryside.) The later chapters explore the transformations in the party in the 1950s and after, including a significant change in the meaning and motives for party membership that spurred Mao to enact measures with consequences ranging from counterproductive to devastating. China Under Mao analyzes these consequences, including the political and organizational causes of the massive failure of the Great Leap Forward and its aftermath. The book ends with a call to rethink Mao's legacy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Most governments around the world – whether democracies or autocracies – face at least some pressure to respond to citizen concerns on some social problems. But the issues that capture public attention — the ones on which states have incentives to be responsive – aren't always the issues on which bureaucracies, agents of the state, have the ability to solve problems. What do these public agencies do when citizens' demands don't line up with either the supply of state capacity or the incentives of the central state? Our guest, Dr. Iza Ding, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University, examines one way in which bureaucrats try to square this circle. In her recent book The Performative State: Public Scrutiny and Environmental Governance in China, Iza argues that state actors who need to respond but lack substantive capacity can instead choose to perform governance for public audiences. Iza explores the puzzling case of China's Environmental Protection Bureau or the EPB, a bureaucratic agency set up to regulate polluting companies. This issue of polluted air became a national crisis during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics when athletes were struggling to breathe let alone compete. Since then, Chinese citizens have been directing their pollution-related complaints to the EPB, which Iza found, has been given little power by the state to impose fines or shut down polluting factories. But that doesn't mean the civil servants working in this agency do nothing. Instead, Iza documents how and why they routinely deploy symbols, language, and theatrical gestures of good governance to give the appearance of dynamic action – all while leaving many environmental problems utterly unaddressed. We talk with Iza about how she uncovered these performative dynamics through months of ethnographic research in which she was embedded within a Chinese environmental protection agency. She also tells us about how she tested her claims using original media and public opinion data. Finally, we talk about how her findings about performative governance in the environmental space translates to China's COVID-19 response.Works cited in this episode:Beraja, Martin, et al.
