What if midlife wasn't a crisis… but a dress rehearsal for how you actually want to live?Episode Summary:In this episode of The School of Midlife Podcast, Laurie sits down with Francine Azel, a woman who is embracing midlife not as a breakdown, but as a dress rehearsal for her next chapter. Fran gets real about the intentional work it takes to keep a long-term marriage alive—and why it's worth it. She talks candidly about the growing importance of friendships, the value of play and curiosity, and the permission she's given herself to experiment with how she wants to live. From honoring alone time in a house full of people, to making her relationship with her husband a living, breathing priority, Fran reminds us that midlife is the moment to stop going through the motions and start intentionally shaping what comes next. This isn't about burning it all down. It's about tending to the flames that keep your soul lit. What We Talk About:Why Fran sees midlife as a dress rehearsal—not a crisisThe myth of “coasting” in long-term relationshipsHow she and her husband are reinvesting in their marriageThe growing significance of friendships in this stage of lifeWhy you don't need to “figure it all out”—just commit to the practiceConnect with Fran:Fran is a powerhouse midlife woman living this journey in real time. Hello to you, Mary D., listening in Coupeville, Washington!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.A longtime podcast listener and Substack subscriber suggested I read The Serviceberry - Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer. The author invites us to consider the gift of reciprocity between Nature and ourselves, ourselves and the rest of Creation. Neither the size of the gift nor the nature of the gift is what matters but the spirit of giving. I have a splendid pie cherry tree in my yard which could be picked to make splendid cherry pies; but this tree I leave for the birds, squirrels and deer.Recently, my friend and neighbor celebrated her 85th birthday. I know I could have bought her some delicious, made-fresh-daily scones from Jupiter Coffee; but I know she favors a loaf of bread studded with raisins and caraway seed, bound together with full fat buttermilk and other ingredients that we call Spotted Dick Dog Bread. To her gift I added a small jar of cherry preserves I received in trade from another elderly neighbor who was canning the fruitful gift of the Rainier Cherry tree in his front yard.We did things like this during the COIVD epidemic. Remember? In many ways we're right back in an epidemic; but the dangers are not germs so much as they are anxiety, confusion, bewilderment, loneliness, and exhaustion. We wonder who to trust, who or what will be taken away, what will happen during the night, and, when will all this end?I don't have the answers, except to say I doubt a one of us saw COVID as a dress rehearsal although the perspective of hindsight tells me it was.TIP: Let's get back to the giving we practiced then because, as you well know, giving is always in style. It keeps us bound together - like “braiding with sweetgrass.”Thank you for listening! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" In this introduction, journalist Paul Jay reports on several cases where police provocateurs incited violence during otherwise peaceful demonstrations—providing authorities with the pretext they needed to justify mass arrests and repression. As federal troops crackdown on peaceful protests in Los Angeles, we revisit the Toronto G20—15 years ago—when police beat peaceful demonstrators, arrested over 1,100 people, and suspended civil liberties under the pretext of security. Journalist Paul Jay connects what happened in 2010 to what's happening now: the criminalization of dissent, from the mass raids on pro-Palestinian activists in Toronto to the militarized repression unfolding in U.S. cities today. This video includes a newly recorded introduction and the original 2012 report: “No Accountability Yet for Toronto G20 Police Crimes.” What happened in Toronto wasn't an exception—it was a warning.

John welcomes U.S. Naval War College professor emeritus and Atlantic staff writer Tom Nichols back to the pod to discuss the implications of Donald Trump's militarization of law enforcement in Los Angeles and an array of related topics. Nichols argues that Trump's mobilization of the National Guard and the Marines to deal with protests of his deportation policies in L.A. is a dry run, on favorable political turf, to acclimate Americans to the sight of troops in their cities and gauge public blowback; that his partisan speech at Fort Bragg—and the silence of the generals in reaction to it—was an “obscenity;" and that these events, along with his military parade in Washington, demonstrate that Trump sees the U.S. Armed Forces as his personal “toy soldiers.” Nichols also weighs in on Israel-Iran, Russia-Ukraine, and how Trump has effectively turned the U.S. into a bystander in both conflicts. In the final episode of our Czechoslovak Socialism series, we dive into the final attempt to reform the Czechoslovak system. As with the Prague Spring, the official ML/liberal narrative about are the same, that this was an attempt to overthrow socialism and establish a capitalist democracy. Just like the Prague Spring, it seems clear that the intentions of its participants were the opposite. The vast majority of Czechoslovaks who participated in the movements that brought down the republic were attempting to reform the socialist system, not destroy it.Krapfl, James. Welcome back to ask uncut where we unpack all of your deep and burning questions on a *checks notes* Monday! Britt shares a story so embarrassing that we had to promise we wouldn’t make a social media clip out of it. Lola has reached a new milestone. Vibes:Britt - Monster BTK PodcastKeeshia - New season of Australian Survivor - Brains vs BrawnLaura - American Murder - Gabby PetitoThen we jump into your questions! HOW LONG DO I GIVE HIM TO MAKE THINGS OFFICIAL?I have recently re-kindled a relationship with my previous on and off f-buddy of 5 years on. We’ve been talking for about a month, going on dates and getting to know each other at a deeper level to what we have in the past. This time feels different, we are both opening up a lot more about how and what we are feeling. He says we are “feeling things out” which is true but realistically I have always had more of an emotional attachment regardless of how casual we kept things. So, my question is, how long do I allow him to make a decision? After 5 years of on and off, I don’t want to put a timeline on things but also don’t want to potentially allow myself to be strung along. DO I ASK HIM TO TAKE HAIR LOSS MEDICATION?Can I ask my husband to take anti-balding medication? We have been together more than 10 years and have 2 kids. He’s always been a silver fox with thick salt and pepper hair, which I love. However, his hair is now starting to thin and I want to ask him to take measures to prevent this - there are sooo many easy and safe options for men to do this these days! My question is whether I have the right to ask him to? I’d be offended if he asked me to alter my appearance or have anti-Aging procedures, is this the same thing? Thank you for your wisdom. HE SLEPT IN THE SPARE ROOM AFTER FINDING OUT I HAVE A VIBRATORI have been with my partner for almost 5 years. We recently got married. We don’t have a particularly regular sex life, maybe a handful of times per year, and when we do it’s pretty vanilla (which is fine). Recently, after one too many drinks we started getting steamy and I with my liquid courage asked if he wanted to incorporate my vibrator in the mix. Until then, he didn’t know that I had or used a vibrator. I had some shame about it when I started using the vibrator years and years ago (before I met him), but I slowly realised how normal it was. Fast forward to when I asked my partner if we should try using it during sex, he was immediately shocked and shut down. He got quite upset (I’m not sure whether about the fact that I have a vibrator or that I caught him by surprise), but he said he felt “a bit attacked”. I was really upset by it as all I wanted to do was spice things up. Am I in the wrong here? He was upset enough to sleep in the spare room and the next day we just went on like nothing happened. IS MY PARTNER CONTROLLING?I think my partner is controlling but I’m not sure if I’m just being dramatic… he said once if I go on a girls trip he’ll break up with me. When I work at a mine site (which is around 80% male) he makes me feel bad for having a drink with them. He makes me feel bad after doing anything fun aka drinking with friends. He always expects me to say excuse me after burping… like sorry I’m a barbie girl. He liked Andrew Tate… plus there’s a lot more. Do you think it’s time to leave… My friends think yes but I don’t have a large group of friends to lean on for this advice. Is this something people can work through and what if I don’t want to waste my time and work through it? The Allied invasion of Normandy was one of the most complex military operations ever conducted. Thousands of ships and planes had to work in conjunction with tens of thousands of soldiers who had to do one of the most difficult things in warfare: an amphibious landing.  In addition to all of the planning that went into the invasion, there were many unknowns. The only way to learn was to practice some of the elements of the landing.  In April 1944, about six weeks before D-Day, the Allies conducted a practice exercise off the coast of England, and it turned into one of the biggest disasters of the war.
