Geja stond met het Draadkracht Team op de Handwerkbeurs in Houten. Buiten dat Geja en Leny aan 90 mensen een workshop hebben gegeven, vonden ook de pakketjes om de Whimsey Fancy te maken gretig aftrek. Ze ontmoetten bovendien een nieuw draadkrachtig contact Eva van Eevees, die in de podcast vertelt over haar kunst en haar workshops. Binnenkort ook workshops in het Draadkracht atelier.In het atelier zijn diverse nieuwe (zomer) garens op plantaardige basis. Denk je aan Houten, dan zie je misschien weinig spannends voor je. Toch inspireerde het Rick de Gier tot een heel album vol Spinvis-achtige teksten. De Gier is een creatieve duizendpoot die alles verslindt wat met kunst te maken heeft. Als filmrecensent werkte hij voor het Nederlands Dagblad, de VPRO en de EO, maar hij is ook schrijver en muzikant. En nu is er dus dat album, dat verhaalt over hang naar wat ooit was, scheppingsdrift en de vraag hoe je omgaat met dingen die na tien jaar nog steeds niet lukken. Presentatie is in handen van Loïs van Wijnen.

Schrijver, balling en feminist avant la lettre Germaine verslaat zelfs Pamela als vrouw met een avontuurlijk leven in wilde tijden. Ze was briljant, schreef bestsellers in zowel de romanliteratuur als wetenschappelijke en politieke essays. Goethe vertaalde haar, Klemens von Metternich en tsaar Alexander ontvingen haar, Wilhelm von Humboldt was een vriend, filosofen als Friedrich von Schlegel en Benjamin Constant waren haar metgezellen, koningin Marie Antoinette was een vriendin die haar wijze adviezen helaas niet volgde. Haar leven tussen 1766 en 1817 viel samen met alle grote revoluties van die jaren en zij speelde daar een opmerkelijke rol in, kende alle hoofdfiguren, correspondeerde en discussieerde met hen. Haar kasteeltje in Coppet, even buiten Genève, was haar salon en die samenkomsten werden 'de Staten Generaal van Europa' genoemd. Ze had één vijand. Napoleon. Ze kritiseerde hem en zijn ondemocratische machtsdrift rechtstreeks in zijn gezicht. Hij liet haar verbannen en de eerste druk van haar boek over Duitsland vernietigen. Het werd ze allerminst makkelijk gemaakt, want op rechts en net zo goed op links waren veel mannen allerminst ingenomen of overtuigd van de waarde van de vrouw in de politiek. Troelstra zag hen als risico voor de komst van het socialistisme. De gereformeerden vonden dat vrouwen geen plaats hadden in de harde wereld van macht en geld. De katholieken vonden het moederschap en niet het bestuur haar ware bestemming. Maar daar trokken de politieke pioniers zich weinig van aan. Fascinerende mensen, voor de duvel niet bang. Leer ze kennen. Suze Groeneweg, Carry Pothuis-Smit, Aletta Jacobs. Maar ook Wilhelmina van Itallie-Van Embden, een meesterinterviewer die Kamerlid werd. Frida Katz, het wetgevingskanon van de CHU. Eiske ten Bos-Harkema, een 'rooie vrouw' die het cachot in moest toen ze een 'MeToo'-schandaal onthulde. De liberalen, die het meest hun best hadden gedaan om het vrouwenkiesrecht te realiseren, werden er niet voor beloond. Algemeen kiesrecht beloonde vooral de socialisten. En veel vrouwen conservatief te stemmen. Florian Illies - Als de zon ondergaat (verschijnt op 12 mei in de Nederlandse vertaling) In de zomer van 1933 was het heerlijk aan de Côte d'Azur. Maar Thomas Mann was wanhopig. Kon hij ooit terug naar München naar zijn schrijftafel, zijn romans, verhalen, essays? Florian Illies' documentaire roman schetst die eerste maanden in ballingschap en de ontworteling van de grote schrijver, zijn familie en hun vrienden in Sanary sur Mer. Hoe dochter Erika een dappere regisseur van het overleven tegen Hitler werd. Hoe zoon Klaus in Zandvoort levensmoe leek, maar in verzet een levensdoel hervond. Meest fundamenteel is het feit dat Xi een ware gelovige is. Het marxisme-leninisme is de enige wetenschappelijk bewezen analyse van de wereld en wie deze zuiver volgt, kán niet falen. Daarom heeft hij met drie correcties het bewind van zijn voorganger Deng Xiaoping diepgaand veranderd. Bij de centrale macht van de Partij en bij de economische verschillen binnen China wijst hij een koers 'naar links' aan. Terug naar Lenin en de jonge Mao. Nivellering en een nadruk op staatsbedrijven. Zuivering in partij en legertop. Bij de nationale identiteit van China wijst Xi naar het verleden, naar de tijd voor Mao. De ideologie, cultuur en zelfs bepaalde zeden en religie uit de keizertijd zijn weer acceptabel. Want China is en was één en superieur. Een nieuwe generatie spelers is opgestaan in het snooker. Afgelopen zondag was het het 19-jarige supertalent Hugo van Houten die zich tot Nederlands kampioen mocht kronen in de populaire biljartdiscipline. Wie eenmaal het klimaatlicht heeft gezien en zich vervolgens door de wereld moeten bewegen, krijgt te maken met heel wat morele dilemma’s. Koop je bijvoorbeeld nog eens wat, zoals nieuwe kleding? Na zeven jaar is Carice van Houten terug in een speelfilm, over scheiden. Als kind maakte ze meerdere scheidingen mee. „Ik was heel introvert, alles speelde zich van binnen af. Ik kon mijn gevoel niet goed uiten.” In haar jeugd was ze bang voor explosiviteit in het gezin. „Ik hield me op de vlakte. Om de liefde van mijn stiefvader te waarborgen, leerde ik niets te zeggen: don't rock the boat.”„Ik moest het toneel op om gezien te worden.” Daar vond ze haar bestaansrecht. Net als thuis werd ze ook bij de pers lange tijd het lievelingetje, „totdat ik mijn bek opendeed.” De ooit conflictvermijdende Van Houten spreekt zich nu uit. Ze groeide vrij op, zonder duidelijke grenzen tussen goed en fout. Wanneer het duurzame bedrijf GoodHout in december 2021 failliet gaat, stapt curator Vincent van den Bos een Rotterdamse loods binnen waar hij geen draaiende machines treft, maar een stilgevallen pilotfabriek vol zakken ongebruikte kokosvezels. Het bedrijf van ondernemer Silvia ten Houten werkte in deze loods jarenlang aan de ontwikkeling van platen van kokosvezels die als alternatief voor hout zouden kunnen worden gebruikt in de bouw en de meubelindustrie. Ten Houten heeft al die tijd een rotsvast vertrouwen in haar groene onderneming en vertelt er trots over in de media, ook bij een programma van BNR. Maar na meer dan zeven jaar ondernemen komt het bedrijf niet verder dan een omzet van slechts €326. Waarom kwam GoodHout ondanks vele euro's subsidie niet van de grond? Highlights from our biggest live show yet! We're thrilled to share our first ever live episode, recorded in September 2025 at The Royal Opera House in front of 2200 Dish fans. Our guest, Jack Whitehall, is an English comedian, presenter, actor and writer - and no stranger to stages of such grandeur.  Jack joined us to help settle Nick and Angela's nerves and provide just a little bit of chaos in our on-stage kitchen. The night is one huge celebration of Dish, complete with special guests, a house band (thank you Sous Chefs), a trap door and more dry ice than we ever thought possible.  The show starts with a glass of Veuve Clicquot to celebrate a landmark moment before Nick mixes up an old fashioned for Jack. De erfenis van zijn voorganger Leo XIII is voor Leo XIV van grote betekenis in tijden van geopolitieke omwenteling; technologische en industriële revolutie en hun impact op de samenleving.Om deze nieuwe paus en zijn visie op de wereld te doorgronden moet je dus Leo XIII leren kennen. Zijn levensverhaal is fascinerend, maar zijn betekenis als ideologisch denker en politiek dier is pas echt van historische allure. En bleek als Leo XIII een wervelwind.Politiek moest hij meteen knokken met de briljante Duitse rijkskanselier Otto von Bismarck. En won. Hij maande katholiek Frankrijk vrede te sluiten met een seculiere liberale staat om polarisatie of erger te vermijden. Hij publiceerde reeksen politieke en spirituele boodschappen en verblufte met een openlijke verzoening van wetenschap en geloof. Leo XIII ontving in audiëntie zelfs sciencefiction-romancier Jules Verne!Faam verwierf hij met de encycliek 'Rerum Novarum', oftewel ‘Over de nieuwe dingen'. Het was een doorwrochte ideologische en filosofische afrekening met het reactionaire denken van zijn voorgangers sinds de Franse Revolutie in 1789. Hij sleurde de rooms-katholieke kerk de werkelijkheid van de industriële, geglobaliseerde wereld in.Met de nodige lef analyseerde hij hoe het kapitalistische liberaal-economisch denken en het socialistische denken en zijn collectivisme de kern van de samenleving en de menselijke waardigheid niet goed begrepen. Beiden maakten de mens een slaaf van materialisme en van de anonieme machten van markt en staat.Zijn alternatieve filosofie ging uit van politieke begrippen die wij ook nu nog als actueel en modern herkennen. Van subsidiariteit, rechten van werknemers en werkgevers en 'polderen' tot 'civil society', vrijheid van vereniging en het 'bonum commune'.In de jaren na 1880 drong dit ook buiten het katholieke milieu door. In Nederland bijvoorbeeld bij mensen als de antirevolutionair Abraham Kuyper en de sociaal-liberaal Sam van Houten met hun nadruk op 'de sociale kwestie'.In zijn strijd met Bismarck zorgde Leo XIII ervoor dat de Duitse katholieken de Duitse staat accepteerden en dat zij zich konden verenigen. De 'Zentrumspartei' werd het politiek thuis voor mensen als Konrad Adenauer en fuseerde na 1945 met protestantse groeperingen in de CDU. De sociale markteconomie en de Europese verzoeningsgedachte stammen direct uit de ideologische filosofie in Rerum Novarum.De nieuwe paus Leo XIV bouwt daar expliciet op voort. Hij spreekt van ‘de schatkist van de sociale leer' van Leo XIII voor de 21e eeuw. Juist in ‘deze andere industriële revolutie en de ontwikkelingen in het terrein van artificiële intelligentie' biedt Leo XIII actuele antwoorden voor ‘de verdediging van menselijke waardigheid, gerechtigheid en het werk van mensen'. De Motorola Razr 60 Ultra is een opvouwbare flip-smartphone, maar doet nog iets unieks: hij heeft een achterkantje van hout! Met een prijs van 1300 euro, een degelijk ontwerp en krachtige specs is het zeker een van de beste vouwbare smartphones in de markt op dit moment. Dat oordeel krijgt het mede omdat de vouwlijn in het scherm voor het eerst echt amper opvalt. Iets wat smartphonemakers als Samsung en Google ook al jaren proberen.
