First appointed to the Newport City Council for a two-year term in 2018, Cynthia then won her seat in 2020. She is currently running unopposed for another four-year term. Cynthia reflects on the fact that the City has spent six years investing in her education about the city. She wants to give back as it takes a while to learn to ask the right questions. She never thought she would be in an elected position, but friends urged her on. She says, “So, I went for it, surprising myself most of all.” Cynthia has observed that the conversation changes when more women are in policy-making roles. She has been a strong, primary advocate of childcare, playgrounds, public safety, and housing the unsheltered. She serves on several city committees: Airport, Budget, Public Arts, Commercial Core Revitalization Plan. Additional city/county committees are Solid Waste Advisory, County Consortium, Public Safety, Lincoln County Housing Advisory. In Cynthia's career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and Advanced Practice Nurse (retired), she has built a life of serving others. She tends to look through the lens of public health in every policy of her city. Among her leisure activities are gardening, painting and writing poetry. She lives with her husband and black Chihuahua, Ser Jorah of Mormont, overlooking the ocean on the Oregon Coast where she marvels at her extraordinary luck to be in such a place.

Jon heads north of Wall to consider Stannis' offer of legitimacy, Winterfell, and Val's hand in marriage. They reunite and Jon takes it as a sign that his decision was wrong. He joins his brothers in the latest round of voting for the Lord Commandership. Stannis has promised to keep them sequestered until they have made a choice. Edd has put forward Jon's name. Daenerys has taken Meereen, but Astapor and Yunkai are backsliding. She forgives Barristan Selmy for his failures to protect her family, but banishes Jorah Mormont from her sight. She'll stay in Meereen and rule. Mackelly and Simon settle in to watch some dragons grow.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen surveys Meereen from the great pyramid. She's bothered by flies who've gathered to feast on the many dead, including the 163 she crucified as payment for what they did to the slave children. She meets an envoy from Astapor. The council she appointed have all lost their heads, literally, and a former (and apparently current) butcher Cleon, has made himself King. He offers his hand in marriage. Dany is distinctly disinterested. The second petitioner is a Qartheen trader. He has goods he wants to trade for slaves. He's surely barking up the wrong tree. Only Daario Naharis confirms that many freed slaves are down at the docks offering to reenter slavery. Dany begrudgingly allows it and imposes a tax on the trade to swell her own coffers.Next she sees Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Jorah Mormont. The former gives it to her straight. Her father was mad, Viserys had the hallmarks too. Robert Baratheon was a great knight, and could have been a good king. She appreciates the candor and reinstates him to her service. Mormont tries a similar tack. He spied for Varys for a pardon, as recently as Qarth. But this is too much for Dany. She banishes Jorah forever.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Sam and the remnants of the Great Ranging find respite at Craster's Keep. However, their host isn't overflowing with generosity. Hunger and frustration eventually bubble over into mutiny. Sam finds himself without his friends but with two dependents, while the Others are set to enter stage right at any moment. Mackelly and Simon pack the diaper bag.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly attends to the ailing ranger Bannen, while he and many of the other Night's Watch brothers shelter in Craster's Keep. Craster gives them only a weak onion soup for sustenance, while Craster dines on a sausage. Sam eventually goes outside, where some of his brothers call him “Slayer” in a mocking reference to his claim to have killed an Other. While Sam chats with Grenn, Lord Commander Mormont arrives and pulls Sam aside.Sam had told the Lord Commander about how he killed an Other with a dragonglass dagger. Mormont realizes that the Night's Watch has forgotten their true purpose over the thousands of years. You don't build a 700 foot wall to keep wildlings out. Unfortunately, they only have a few dragonglass weapons available to them. Most of the cache Jon found was left on the Fist during the fight with the wights.Craster emerges from the hall with news that his daughter-wife Gilly has given him a boy. Later, Mormont announces they're leaving in the morning. During a feast provided by Craster, using the dead horses of the Night's Watch, a mutiny transpires. Craster and Mormont are killed. Jon Snow has a busy day. He discovers that the wildling host contains giants, and lots of them. He and Tormund discuss the pros and cons of Jon bedding Yigrette. Jon gets attacked by an eagle. Finally, he gets called out on his lie about how many of the Night's Watch were north of the Wall. His day seems to be heading toward wrapping up with a tryst with Yigrette. Simon and Mackelly flip on the Do Not Disturb sign.Chapter Review:Jon Snow and Tormund Giantsbane watch a procession of giants mounted on wooly mammoths ride by. After that, the pair make their way toward the front of the host. On the way, Jon tries in vain to explain to Tormund why he hasn't touched Yigrette, despite her clear advances. The idea of a bastard child being an unwanted result of Jon bedding Yigrette is beyond Tormund's comprehension. They catch up with Yigrette. She and some of the other wildlings treat Jon to a rousing rendition of “The Last of the Giants.” After the song fades, Jon is attacked by an eagle that gouges his face with its talons. The eagle heralds the arrival of Rattleshirt, who announces that he's to take Jon to Mance Rayder.Yigrette accompanies Jon to the top of the First of the First Men, where Mance waits. Along the way, they discover the bodies of dead horses strewn about the slope of the hill. Mance wants Jon to tell him true how many Black Brothers there were and who led them. Jon hesitates but does as commanded. Three hundred men, led by Jeor Mormont. Mance thinks their war is won, if they get to the Wall before Mormont does. But there's still the matter of Jon's lying. Daenerys is sailing the Summer Sea watching her dragons grow. She receives ambiguous reports of the kind of men her father and eldest brother were, advice from Ser Jorah as to her next move, and possibly unwanted advances from Mormont. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the suitors and their suits.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen watches her dragons play above the three ships that bear her west towards Pentos, slowly. The dragons are growing, but remain more of a liability than an asset. In her honor, the three ships have been renamed for dragons of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar.Arstan Whitebeard provides some dragon-lore from his time in King's Landing where he knew both her father and her brother Rhaegar. He treads carefully, but it's not hard to see his true feelings about King Aerys. And unlike most people, he has a nuanced view of Rhaegar. “Able above all else” is not the most ringing endorsement.Ser Jorah warns her to beware of Arstan - something's not right about him. But Dany has too few friends to doubt those who've saved her life. Ser Jorah proposes a plan to both test Illyrio Mopatis' loyalty to Dany, and to ensure it. They'll redirect for Astapor, sell all Mopatis' goods on the ships, and use that money to buy an army of Unsullied - the finest warriors in Essos - with whom they'll march to Pentos.Dany likes the plan and Ser Jorah celebrates by kissing her unbidden.

Qhorin Halfhand and his crew arrive at the Fist of the First Men. They've seen some action but gained valuable intelligence. Mance Rayder is seeking some magic to bring down the Wall. Three small groups will scout ahead and do what they can to prevent this. Mackelly and Simon long for the comforts of Castle Black. Chapter Review: Jon Snow is roused from sleep by horns of the Night's Watch. One blast means that it is rangers returning. Qhorin Halfhand has arrived with 100 men from the Shadow Tower. There are injuries and missing horses. The Halfhand recognizes Jon, he knew Ned and Ned's father, and Jon shares the Stark look. Mormont and Qhorin discuss what to do. Intelligence suggests that Mance Rayder has gathered a significant host, but that it comprises as many women and children as fighting men. Also that he might be seeking some device in the Frostfangs that would allow him to breach the Wall. Even if his plans are more worldly, he, as a former brother of the Night's Watch, knows the strengths and weaknesses so he poses a risk. Mormont considers re-garrisoning some of the abandoned castles along the Wall. Meanwhile, Qhorin will take a handpicked crew into the Frostfangs to find the truth of what's going on, and if necessary put a stop to it. Jon gets the call. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Night's Watch - The men who guard the Seven Kingdoms against threats from beyond the Wall. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. The Night's Watch arrive at the Fist of the First Men, an ancient fort. Mormont decides to wait there as it is a good spot for friends to find them, and equally a fine place to keep an eye on their enemies. Ghost acts weird and leads Jon to a cache of dragonglass weapons. Mackelly and Simon feel the keenness of the edges. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch reach the Fist of the First Men. A rocky outcropping that pierces the canopy of the Haunted Forest. It was used as a fort in ancient times, and it is very defensible. Ghost is very unhappy as they climb towards the summit, and Mormont tells Jon to let the direwolf run free. Ghost does not need a second invitation. The position is advantageous, with steep slopes and basic walls, but Jon is concerned that without a water source they could not survive a siege. Mormont orders cisterns to be dug and water brought up from a nearby stream. That will keep the men busy. Mormont wants the rangers to stay close, not crossing the Milkwater River to the west, beyond which are the Frostfang Mountains, which according to Craster are where the Wildlings have gathered under the banner of Mance Rayder. Jon is worried that this limits their ability to find his uncle Benjen, but Mormont points out that it's easier for one man to find three hundred than the reverse. Plus, they need to wait somewhere conspicuous so that Qhorin Halfhand and his men from the Shadow Tower will find them. Ghost continues to freak out and Jon eventually follows him down the hill where they discover a significant cache of dragonglass weapons wrapped in a Night's Watch cloak that doesn't seem very old.  Characters/Places/Names/Events:  Night's Watch - The men who guard the Seven Kingdoms against threats from beyond the Wall. Simon and Mackelly ponder Gilly's future. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch arrive at Craster's Keep. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont warns all not to interact with Craster's wives. The keep is awful, little more than a midden heap. Jon Snow joins Mormont in the “hall.” The squalid building stinks, and Craster sits in the only chair. Mormont quizzes Craster about Benjen Stark, but he's not been through these parts. The last crows Craster has seen were Waymar Royce and crew. Their host knows why the villages are empty. Mance Rayder has been inviting wildlings to join him. He has intel about the King Beyond the Wall and trades it for a new axe. Outside, Ghost terrorizes a young pregnant girl named Gilly. Jon calls him off. Jon then sets up a tent and makes his own food so that he owes Craster nothing. Later Gilly approaches Jon and ask him to take her when he leaves. If her baby proves to be a boy, Craster will give him to the Others. Jon feels bad, but he cannot help. As the Night's Watch leave for the Frostfangs following the map that Sam created with Craster's help, Jon asks Mormont about Craster's sons. The Great Ranging has found a fourth abandoned wildling village under a great weirwood tree. There is no sign of struggle or clue as to their motivations. Mormont sends word to Maester Aemon via one of Sam's ravens and the ranging continues north. Mackelly and Simon try to keep warm. Chapter Review: The wildling village is deserted. Only some charred human bones remain within the mouth of the weirwood tree that shades the entire village. Ser Jeor Mormont wonders why the wildlings burn their dead, but Jon Snow has a pretty good idea. This is the fourth abandoned village they've found. So Mormont pens a message for Maester Aemon. Jon delivers the message to Sam, who is supervising the ravens. He's trying to teach them to talk. Sam is warming to the ranging, as there don't appear to be any wildlings around. That which reassures Sam is troubling to everybody else. Jon and the Old Bear discuss what Benjen Stark would have done had he found the villages deserted, and they conclude that he would have continued on to try to solve the mystery. This gives Jon some hope. Their force will soon be swelled to 300 when they rendezvous with Qhorin Halfhand's men from the Shadow Tower. In the meantime, the trek north continues. Sam has found a number of maps that will come in useful for the planned great ranging of the Night's Watch. Lord Commander Mormont shares maester Aemon's past with Jon. Simon and Mackelly wrap up warm and consider the prospects. Chapter Review: Jon finds Sam in the Castle Black library surrounded by books and parchments. Sam has been gone all night and missed breakfast. He was sent for maps of the North, but was swept away by the feast of knowledge he found. Jon's unimpressed. They head to Lord Commander Mormont's rooms. Jeor is in dispute with the acting first-ranger Thoren Smallwood, who believes that the Lord Commander should stay home. Mormont pulls rank and dismisses Thornwood. He's also disappointed by the age and content of the maps. Sam is terrified of the commander, but needs to find a bit of courage as he'll be joining the great ranging. Mormont talks Jon through maester Aemon's family history, in the hopes that the aging maester's example of loyalty to his vows, in the face of overwhelming temptations, will resonate with Jon. Jon decides his future lies south of the wall. He rides out to join Robb in his fight. He's prevented from his oath-breaking by his friends, who ride after him and drag him back. Jeor Mormont announces that the Night's Watch will march north of the Wall to figure out what's going on, and Jon better jolly-well come along. The boys prepare for winter. Chapter Review: Jon Snow saddles up and, ignoring Sam's pleas, heads south to join his brother Robb Stark. He does have a few doubts about the reception his brother will give him. As Lord of Winterfell, Robb might feel the need to behead Jon for oath-breaking. Grenn, Pyp, Toad, Halder, and Matthar catch up with him and, by being unarmed and unarmored, they shame Jon into returning with them. As he serves Mormont breakfast, he's plotting his next escape. But Mormont reveals that he knows his men, and had set a watch on Jon. He's going nowhere. Mormont uses the dastardly trick of logical argument to convince Jon to stay. Is Jon such a great warrior that he would tip the war in Robb's favor? Has Jon paid any attention to the portents at the Wall, you know, like the dead rising? The realm's real fight is right here, and right here Jon might actually make a difference. The Night's Watch will sortie north of the wall to find Benjen Stark, to gain intel on Mance Rayder (the King Beyond the Wall), and to learn the truth about the Others. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Former Lord of Winterfell. Executed by King Joffrey Baratheon for treason. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Maester Aemon - 100-year-old maester of the Night's Watch. Now revealed to be Aemon Targaryen. Benjen Stark - First Ranger of the Night's Watch. Missing north of the wall. Younger brother of Eddard Stark. Ser Jaremy Rykker - Acting First Ranger, in Benjen Stark's absence. Dany survives a poisoning plot thanks to Ser Jorah's timely intervention. Khal Drogo is so grateful he gives Mormont a horse and Dany what she wishes: the Khalasar will cross the Narrow Sea and take back the Iron Throne for her. Mackelly and Simon fortify their castles in anticipation. Chapter Review: Khal Drogo has got no interest in Westeros. As far as he is concerned, the world that his future son Rhaego will mount ends at the Narrow Sea. Daenerys Targaryen doesn't push her luck (who would after witnessing Viserys' coronation?) Drogo goes hunting. Daenerys goes to the market. Ser Jorah gets news from Westeros. A wine-seller digs out a special cask just for the Khaleesi. Ser Jorah thinks the merchant should sample his own wares. The man apparently doesn't like wine and tries unsuccessfully to high-tail it out of there. Wait a minute! It was poison. A letter from Illyrio Mopatis to Viserys confirms that a lordship is on offer to anyone who can murder a Targaryen. Daenerys feels the dragon stirring within her, and tries to wake her dragon eggs with fire. No luck. Drogo kills a white lion, but that is quickly forgotten when he learns of the plot. The usurper tried to kill his wife, in Vaes Dothrak? He has gone too far. The best horse in the khalasar for Ser Jorah for saving Daenerys. And puke-bags, at the ready we're going on a cruise everybody. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Khal Drogo - Lord of a giant Dothraki Khalasar. Husband to Daenerys Targaryen. Daenerys Targaryen - Khaleesi to a Dothraki khalasar, wife to Khal Drogo, and younger sister to Viserys. Pregnant with Rhaego, the Stallion who Mounts the World. Viserys Targaryen - Deposed heir to the Iron Throne. Older brother to Daenerys. Killed by Khal Drogo. Illyrio Mopatis - Wealthy magister from the Free City of Pentos. Jorah Mormont - Exiled former lord of Bear Island. Advisor to Daenerys Targryen. Spying on the Targaryens for Lord Varys. Doreah - Lysine handmaid to Daenerys Targaryen. She's charged with teaching Dany the womanly arts. Her previous career in a pleasure house of Lys makes her something of an expert. Jhogo - Dothraki warrior. Member of Daenerys Targaryen's Khas (personal guards). Support the podcast. Buy a bit of merch from our store. Jon and a delegation from the Night's Watch find the bodies of Othor and Jafer Flowers near the Godswood. They bring them back to Castle Black for examination, but Othor's story is not quite done yet. Jon and Ghost save Lord Commander Mormont, which is a good job, because Jon had been very naughty. The boys discuss Jon's failings. Chapter Review: Jon, Sam, and the senior members of the Night's Watch find the bodies that Ghost discovered. They are rangers from Benjen Stark's party. Sam goes all CSI: They seem to have been dead a while, but they haven't rotted. Mormont is troubled and wants Maester Aemon to examine them, despite the misgivings of some of the men. When they return to Castle Black, a raven has brought news of Robert's death and Eddard Stark's treason. Ser Alliser mock's Jon as not only a bastard but the bastard-son of a traitor. Jon loses his temper and his liberty. But in the night, Ghost wakes Jon. Something is amiss. They trace the trouble to Mormont's quarters, where Othor is up and about - and up to no good. Jon and Ghost manage to defeat him with fire. Hopefully regaining the Lord Commander's good graces. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Erstwhile hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and deceased King Robert's closest friend. Currently languishing in a King's Landing cell for treason. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. Ser Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Ser Alliser Thorne - Master of Arms for the Night's Watch. Jon receives great news that Sam will indeed be joining him in taking his Night's Watch vows. Less joyful that Jon doesn't get the job he wants or expects. The boys take their vows while Ghost plays a macabre game of fetch. Mackelly and Simon, whose watch began 49 episodes ago, thank the latest watchers on the wall. Chapter Review: Somehow Jon beats Sam to breakfast, but maybe Sam was weighed down by news that he'll be taking Chett's place as steward to Maester Aemon. Jon is understandably pleased with himself. They hurry to the sept where the Night's Watch bigwigs are gathered to welcome their newest brothers. Mormont assigns each of them to a role. Everyone goes pretty much where you'd expect, apart from Jon who is mystifyingly assigned to the Stewards as Mormont's attendant. Jon gets mad. His friends point out that he is being groomed for leadership and he should stop his moaning. Jon and recently converted Samwell say their vows before the Old Gods in a weirwood north of the wall. They are welcomed to the brotherhood by a few crows who accompanied them, but the reverie comes to an abrupt galt when Ghost trots into the circle carrying an unidentified human hand. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Seven hundred feet tall and stretching from coast to coast. Support the podcast. Buy some merch from our store. Tyrion's time at Castle Black has come to an end. But before he leaves Jeor Mormont has a big favor to ask of him. One that Tyrion says he'll do, but think it won't do much good. He also spends some time with Jon, forging a final bond between the pair. On top of examining that, the guys delve into some specifics of the Long Night, and Simon explains how a male bodily function is affected by modern technology. Chapter Review: As Tyrion prepares to leave Castle Black, he attends a goodbye feast, where he manages to offend Ser Alliser Thorne and receive a glowing compliment from Maester Aemon. Afterward, Lord Commander Mormont pleads with him to use his influence to muster more resources for the Night's Watch, namely more better trained men and less dregs of society. Mormont knows winter is coming and a terrible darkness is coming with it, and the Night's Watch isn't ready. Tyrion says he'll do what he can, knowing the rest of the realm will simply laugh at him when he does. Later, Tyrion runs into Jon atop the Wall, and Jon asks him to help Bran during his stop in Winterfell. Tyrion has no clue how, but he promises to try.  Characters/Places/Names/Events: Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.Ser Alliser Thorne - Master-at-Arms of the Night's Watch. Andrew and Manu travel to the Wall in "Baelor" through the eyes of Jon Snow. Since he saved Lord Commander Mormont, the Old Bear gifts him the Valyrian sword Longclaw, a Mormont family heirloom. They talk about the sword and Alliser Thorne, and afterward, Jon learns from Sam that Robb Stark is marching south. Conflicted, Jon is summoned by Maester Aemon, who has a heart-to-heart with him in which he explains his Targaryen roots and the similar hardships he faced watching from the Wall as his house fell to ruin during Robert's Rebellion. Every word from the late Peter Vaughan is chilling and moving, so we try to give this moment its due. It's incredible and chalk full of connections to the story writ large. Let's get to it. Jon talks with Jorah about Jeor Mormont and tries to give him Longclaw back in season 7 (which we also touched upon in our podcast recap of that episode) Helpful video with graphics explaining the Targaryen family tree (Note: The show simplifies it by skipping a generation and making the Mad King the son of Maester Aemon's younger brother Aegon the Unlikely, rather than the grandson) Once more: Manu's appearance on the "Not a Cast" podcast discussing Bran IV Just watch the scene with Maester Aemon and Jon again. The Cast Beyond the Wall: A House of the Dragon Podcast

This week's episode of Game of Thrones may not have quite packed the same level of action that we've become used to, but “Kill the Boy” didn't disappoint in its character drama and we're ready to dive right into all of it. On this installment of The Cast Beyond the Wall, we're joined by special guests Dalton Stuart and Jessica Martin to discuss all of the latest developments in the north side of Westeros. We were all shocked by the passing of Ser Barristan after last week's cliffhanger and we try to decide whether or not showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gave the understated fan favorite his due. In the fallout of his death, Daenerys makes a vengeful decision to begin burning the former slave owners alive. It may not be one of the most diplomatic solutions, but we chime in with our thoughts on how well her moves will play with the rest of Mereen. This season of Game of Thrones continues to give Stannis knock out moments and this week was no exception. The self-declared king continues to win us over with his respectable decisions and great one on one talks with all of our favorite characters. Before finally departing the wall, Stannis has a few last words with Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly. After decapitating the despicable Janos Slynt a couple of episodes back, Jon continues to make controversial moves in his role as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. We take a closer look at his polarizing decision to work with the wildlings and set the likes of Ollie against him. The family drama in Winterfell began to ramp up this week as well now that Sansa is starting to settle into her old home. After years of being apart, she is finally reunited with Theon and the results are truly twisted. There's certainly a lot to discuss this week and as always, we break it all down in our lengthy and in-depth discussion. Tune in below and be sure to leave a comment letting us know what you thought of “Kill the Boy.” Subscribe on iTunes Follow us on Facebook Watch us on Youtube Don't miss all of the latest Game of Thrones updates at We Got This Covered
