Bryan shares his journey from acting at Juilliard to writing for films and television; insights about how Shakespeare begat Game of Thrones, which in turn begat The Hollow Crown; how early bafflement led to eventual success (and imitators); the challenge of failing at the business of being an actor; how the best fantasy is grounded by relationships; and how it's a golden age for TV-watching geeks. We're coming down to the wire with Season 8, Episode 2, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." Often cited as a lot of people's favorite episode of this season, it acts as a calm before the storm in a few senses. This is the last episode of the series written by Bryan Cogman, the only other writer besides Benioff & Weiss to write episodes for all 8 seasons. Jaime has arrived at Winterfell and is allowed to help participate in the fight, and is pardoned by Bran, much to his surprise. Daenerys is rightfully furious at Tyrion for failing her yet again, but at Jorah's suggestion, attempts to make peace with Sansa, only to be rejected. It's all for naught however, as Tormund & the Night's Watch's arrival signifies the imminent arrival of the Army of the Dead, forcing them to prepare. Jaime knights Brienne, while Jon reveals the truth of his parentage to Daenerys right as the Army of the Dead arrives. Alright, we've officially reached the point of no return, Season 5, Episode 6, the infamous Dorne disaster, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken." The Martell sigil words, which seems to signify the pigheadedness of all the characters and their actions as they move towards the finale. This is the second episode written by Bryan Cogman & directed by Jeremy Podeswa, and has become very controversial in the years since both for the changes made to the Dorne storyline as well as the ending scene, which presents Sansa being horrifically and rather brutally sexually assaulted by Ramsay on the night of their wedding, a moment that was heavily criticized as being gratuituous for the sake of being gratuituous rather than actually contributing to the story in a meaningful way. Jaime & Bronn finally reach the Water Gardens to rescue Myrcella, but are interrupted by the Sand Snakes as they also make their attempt to kidnap and kill her. Arya continues to clean bodies in the House of Black & White but is able to prove herself. Tyrion & Jorah are captured by slavers, but Tyrion convinces them to bring them to Meereen to Daenerys. In King's Landing, Loras is placed on trial but the High Sparrow stacks the tables against them and has both him & Margaery imprisoned. We're past the halfway point of Season 4, which means we're into gangbuster territory. I'd make the argument here that the back half of Season 4 might be the best and most important stretch of this entire show, and we're kicking it off with "The Laws of Gods & Men," or as its better known as, Tyrion's trial. It's another season 4 episode written by Bryan Cogman, as well as another one that features a gigantic King's Landing event for the whole second half, in this case Tyrion's trial, the next even in the awesome King's Landing arc this season. We get a few brief check-ins with Stannis visiting the Iron Bank and Daenerys realizing that ruling Meereen is going to be much harder than she originally thought. We also get possibly the worst sequence in this season with Yara attempting to lead an attack on the Dreadfort to rescue Theon, and not only does he not recognize her, but somehow Ramsay fights off multiple Ironborn with no shirt on? And then, the entire sequence is used to give Ramsay the ammunition he needs to use Theon to...look, it's a really dumb sequence, it doesn't work, and it's better in hindsight not to talk about it. Instead, we have the star of the episode, and arguably his last great performance and monologue on the show, because Peter Dinklage really brings it this episode, channeling all the hurt, the betrayal and the misery his family's put him through the last couple seasons into the monologue to end all monologues as he calls for trial by combat after Shae's devastating betrayal. Pat & I are covering every episode of this show all the way up until the finale, and it's all covered here on #talkinthrones --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support

A smaller, more intimate set up episode, but an incredible one to say the least. Bryan Cogman returns to write the episode that definitely set the precedent for deviating the most from the books as far as character motivations go. Daenerys takes over Meereen with a cool maneuver from Grey Worm. Jon arranges to take a party north of the wall to kill the Night's Watch mutineers at Craster's, who also happen to have captured Bran. In King's Landing, Jaime is being torn in every direction between his love for both his siblings, and relents by sending Brienne to find Sansa and keep her safe. Olenna & Littlefinger both reveal their parts in Joffrey's death to Margaery & Sansa, and we also get out introduction to the Night King. Our popular FROM TOP TO BOTTOM series returns with one of the greatest filmmakers to ever step behind a camera - the inimitable FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA. And we're joined for this 90-minute (that's a laugh) dive into his entire filmography by writer and producer BRYAN COGMAN, from GAME OF THRONES. Welcome back, friends, to The Longest Night - a little show about the HBO series Game of Thrones. Last week, after dodging a dozen or so King in the North memes, it's been a quieter few days for Lizzy, who hasn't had to be quite so vigilant when avoiding spoilers. What does she make of 'Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things', Bryan Cogman's first penned episode of the series? Is this Game of Thrones, or CSI: Westeros?
