Daarna duiken we in The Conjuring: Last Ride, het nieuwste deel in de populaire franchise. Ook Final Destination 6 staat op de planning, een terugkeer na 13 jaar afwezigheid. Tot slot kijken we uit naar Return to Silent Hill, de langverwachte gameverfilming die fans van psychologische horror zeker zal aanspreken. Ben and Rob meet ‘Mank'; David Fincher's first movie project for Netflix. Starring Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried and Charles Dance, this film is rarely mentioned in conversations about Fincher's greatest films. Yet our hosts, approaching it with sheer dread, make the case that this is Fincher's most slept-on masterpiece. Gorgeous visuals, masterful performances and an unbelievable soundtrack combine to create the best film you've probably never watched. But is this tale of a cynical and disillusioned writer more personal of a story to Fincher than we know? Is Gary Oldman the perfect actor? Who really wrote ‘Citizen Kane', often heralded as ‘The Greatest Movie Of All Time'? Loose Ends this week is a masterclass in the many ways human beings find to laugh: the writer and comic Jenny Eclair started her career as a punk performance poet, who created her stage name to chime with the band she joined - Cathy le Creme and the Rumbabas. But as we learn in her new memoir, she knew as a small child called Jenny Hargreaves that she had the "funny bones" required to make her a comedy star. There is little about Ferdia Lennon's debut novel Glorious Exploits that might suggest comedy - its set in 412 BC Sicily, in the years after Athens' failed invasion and tells the story of two locals who get Athenian prisoners of war to stage a production of the play Medea. Yet this book's just won an award for comic writing. Nikki Amuka-Bird is a Bafta-winning actor and her new movie Rumours features a constellation of Hollywood stars. But this comedy-horror-satire features her alongside Cate Blanchett and Charles Dance prat-falling as world leaders at a summit. And stand-up Lou Sanders is about to go on the road with a show called No Kissing In The Bingo Hall, but she's taken diversions via Dancing on Ice and Taskmaster and will be trying not to laugh in series one of Last One Laughing UK next year. With music by Roddy Woomble of Idlewild.Presenter: Clive Anderson Producer: Olive Clancy
We're all about Anora on the antepenultimate episode of Movie Squad for 2024! Listen in as your hosts Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo share their thoughts on director Sean Baker's Cannes Palme d'Or winner, starring Mikey Madison as a street-smart sex worker who finds herself married to the son of a Russian billionaire after a whirlwind romance (or is it romance?). Then, the Blockbuster Babes regale Breakfast host Pam Boland with the satirical tale of Rumours, which sees legendary Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin poking fun at the G7 in his film about world leaders (played by Cate Blanchett and Charles Dance, among others) fending for themselves when an apocalyptic crisis strikes their summit. Rumours is now in Australian cinemas, while Anora opens on Boxing Day (but keep an eye out for early screenings, such as this virtual Q&A with Sean Baker at Luna Leederville on Monday 9 December). Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive chat as Tristan and Simon reflect on their favourite Christmas movies, and Simon relents to give Love Actually some extremely qualified praise. Tune in to RTRFM every Friday at 7:30am to hear Movie Squad live on Breakfast with Pam!
The ‘Rumours' are true... screen superstar Cate Blanchett and director Guy Maddin are joining Simon this week to give us the gossip on their surreal new satire—once they've finished fangirling over the music of Sparks, that is. Following decades of avant garde work that's made him one of Canada's most celebrated filmmakers, ‘Rumours' is the biggest movie to date from the Winnipeg weirdo—its star-studded cast featuring Charles Dance and Alicia Vikander alongside Blanchett. Set at a G7 summit called to address an ‘unnamed-crisis', it follows the hapless world leaders as they are beleaguered by bronze-age bog bodies come to life in some sort of apocalypse situation. There's also a giant brain. It's as odd as it sounds. Mark reviews this bizarre object of a film, along with ‘Merchant Ivory', a documentary deep dive on the filmmakers responsible for all those most quintessentially British of period dramas from ‘Room With A View' to ‘The Remains of the Day'—and ‘Nightbitch', Marielle Heller's dark comedy where Amy Adams plays a new mother at her wits end who transforms into a dog. The Christmas Spectacular is almost upon us! Mark and Simon will be live onstage at London's Prince Edward theatre this Sunday 8th December. Booyakasha! It didn't seem that long ago that you couldn't walk 10 metres without someone doing an Ali G impression in your face, but it's over a quarter of a century since this cultural phenomenon of a character first graced our late-night Channel 4 screens as part of the anarchic topical comedy the 11 O' Clock Show. Originally a tool to poke the pomposity of politicians, religious figures, and artists, the boy from Staines became so much more, having his own spin-off shows, appearing in a Madonna music video, and eventually his own film in 2002. In this episode, Guy and Rob talk all things Ali G and Sacha Baron Cohen, whilst being ever so careful to leave Borat and Bruno for a later date. Plus a mini dive into the 11 O'Clock Show and all the comedy talent that particularly divisive programme gave the world. This may well also end up being the most represented film in our Spotify playlist, as the amount of Hip-Hop had Rob unable to contain his excitement, as did the line delivery of Charles Dance, but what was the overall impression of this film that left both our hosts relatively cold the first time around? "Rumours" had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its off-beat humor, entertaining ensemble, which includes names like Cate Blanchett, Charles Dance, Alicia Vikander, Denis Ménochet and more, and hazy, dream-like direction that combines multiple genres. Directors/Screenwriters Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson were kind enough to talk with us about their latest film during the New York Film Festival, which will open in theaters on October 18th from Bleecker Street. For today's daily NYFF62 podcast, directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, & Galen Johnson, and cast members Cate Blanchett and Denis Menochet discuss Rumours, a Spotlight selection of the 62nd New York Film Festival, with NYFF programmer Rachel Rosen. The world's wealthy democratic world leaders have come together for the annual G7 summit, trading quips and nervous smiles as they do their best to diplomatically discuss vague matters of international emergency and draft statements of import between sips of wine. Yet a major, unforeseen crisis looms on the horizon for the presidents, prime ministers, and chancellors—nothing less than potential human apocalypse, hastened by the arrival of unearthed “bog men” from the Iron Age and a giant pulsating brain perched ominously in the woods. This sci-fi pulp satire finds Canadian trickster extraordinaire Guy Maddin (My Winnipeg) and fellow Manitoban co-directors Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson in a particularly wacky mood, corralling an outstanding, starry cast—including Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, Denis Ménochet, Charles Dance, and Nikki Amuka-Bird—for a merciless, midnight-movie skewering of the bureaucratic processes that govern our precarious reality. A Bleecker Street release. Tickets to the New York Film Festival are moving fast! Get up-to-date information on all available tickets on a daily basis by visiting filmlinc.org/tix.

Send us a textAs we blast off into our 4th Season here at Fabulous Film and Friends, and with the recent release of Alien Romulus, we thought it only fitting to take a look at ALL the Alien movies, minus the execrable Alien v. Predator films, starting with 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphett Koto, John Hurt, Veronica Cartright and Ian Holm followed by 1986's Aliens, directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver again, joined by Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Lance Henrickson, Carrie Ann Henn, William Hope, Jeanette Goldstein, Mark Rolston Al Matthews, and Paul Reiser. Then we get 1992's Alien 3 directed by David Fincer, starring Weaver once again, with Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Ralph Brown, Pete Postelwaite, Brian Glover, Holt MccAllany, Lance Henrickson and a veritable slew of bald British day players yelling, "You bloody wanker!" Then there's 1997's Alien Resurrection directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet starring Ms. Weaver, Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, Dan Hedaya, Brad Dourif, JE Freeman, Kim Flowers Gary Dourdan, Dominique Pinon and Michael Wincott. Then there's a long break in the actual franchise with the aforementioned cash-grabs Alien v. Predator films thrown in the mix and the series starts up again in earnest with 2012's Ridley Scott directed prequel Prometheus starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall Green, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, and Guy Pierce. In 2017 we're treated to Alien Covenant, once again directed by Ridley Scott starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Cruddup, Danny McBride, Callie Hernandez, Carmen Ejogo, Guy Pearce, everybody's favorite prankster, Jussie Smollet and blink and you'll miss them cameos by Noomi Rapace and James Franco. Which leads us to 2024's Alien Romulus directed by Fede Alvarez and starring Callie Spaeny, David Jonsson, Isabella Merced, Archie Renaux, Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn and a posthumus Ian Holm. I'm your host Gino Caputi and the guests today are Burton Brown, David Johnson, DMD, Joe Field. With seven movies to cover we're going to get right into it, with one synopsis. Alien movies started off about a crew of space miners serving on the enormous mining vessel the Nostromo who while in cryosleep on their return to Earth with their minerals and ore in tow, are given orders to stop on the planet LV-426 to investigate a distress signal coming from a derelict spacecraft. While investigating the phenomena the crew inadvertently bring an alien on board their vessel. The Alien picks off the crew one by one and it is only warrant officer Ripley who survives by destroying the Nostromo and ultimately shooting the alien out into space. An internet meme sums it up thusly:Alien 1 - A team of miners faces an AlienAliens - A team of marines faces a lot of AliensAlien 3 - A group of convicts faces one AlienAlien Resurrection - A team of pirates face 5 AliensPrometheus - A team of scientists inadvertently create the AlienAlien Covenant - A team of colonists face a a lot of AliensAlien Romulus - A team of babyfaced Gen Z 'ers face a lot of AliensWhich is Queen of the Hive? Alien month continues with yet another controversial, wildly visionary, endlessly compromised thriller with tremendous production design -- the first of that batch, David Fincher's ALIEN 3. It's a grim movie but a fun show, as Rowan, Kev, Carli, and new guest El Loughney discuss the massively different cuts, doomed production, how this all relates to Babylon 5, comedy xenomorph kills, and just how good Charles Dance and Charles Dutton are in this!
Hello all, Scene In Fifteen is back! You didn't really ASK for Jabbo to shoulder this one by his lonesome again, but we're gonna act like you did. lol. Ben and Rob leap into the fire of controversy with ‘Alien 3', the debut feature film of legendary director David Fincher and widely considered a staggeringly disappointing film both critically and commercially. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dance and Lance Henriksen, ‘Alien 3' follows Ellen Ripley after her Sulaco escape pod crashes on a planet populated by violent male inmates; and violently undoes huge amounts of story work established by James Cameron in his eighties megahit ‘Aliens'. Widely considered a terrible end to Ripley's story, this film is nonetheless Rob's absolute favourite entry in the franchise; MUCH to Ben's utter horror and disgust. So what exactly does this botched sequel offer that can't be found in its superior prequels? Cannes 2024 has arrived—and our intrepid on-the-Croisette crew of Film Comment contributors is high-tailing it from screening to screening, ready to cut through the noise with a series of thoughtful dispatches, interviews, and podcasts. On today's episode, Film Comment Editor Devika Girish sat down with Canadian filmmakers Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson to discuss their new film Rumours, one of the true delights of the festival so far. It's a horror comedy set during a G7 Summit, with a dynamic ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett as the German chancellor, Charles Dance as the American president with an explicable British accent, and Roy Dupuis as the Canadian prime minister sporting a man bun. These and other leaders of the world's richest democracies gather in a gazebo in the German forest to draft a statement addressing an unnamed political crisis, but soon sinister noises and figures emerge from the shadows around them. Rumours is a satire that is as whip-smart and timely as it is unabashedly silly, featuring hijinks such as a giant brain and an AI bot that traps sex predators. Subscribe today to the Film Comment Letter for a steady stream of Cannes coverage, providing everything you need to know about the 2024 edition: www.filmcomment.com/newsletter-sign-up/

On this week's show, we watched 1992's Alien 3 starring Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dance, Charles S. Dutton, Paul McGann, and Lance Henriksen. From director David Fincher, this third installment of the Alien franchise starts immediately following the events of Aliens (1986), where the survivors of LV-426 were headed back to Earth via the Colonial Marine spaceship, The USS Sulaco. Somehow, the Xenomorph queen made it onboard and laid 3 eggs before meeting her doom at the end of the previous film. Following a facehugger attack, our heroes (who are still in hypersleep) are jettisoned to a nearby planetoid; former maximum-security prison facility, Fury-161. After the escape pod crashes and its survivors are recovered, calamity ensues and it's once again up to Ellen Ripley to save everyone; even though it may cost her everything. This is one of those movies with a production hellish enough that it might be more entertaining than the film itself. Be sure to let us know what you think of the movie, and the podcast. Thanks and enjoy!
The actor, director and star of Game Of Thrones Charles Dance tells Gyles about his childhood, adolescence and the early years of his career: which are possibly not what you'd expect. Dance was born to working class parents in the Midlands, lost his father when he was only 3, and then moved to Plymouth where he developed a stammer. He didn't train to be an actor until later, and his training was unorthodox - he was taught by two eccentric old men in the midst of rural Devon, where ballet exercises were done by holding onto the towel rail in front of the Aga. Charles also talks to Gyles about the failure of his first marriage, about his first job, and his first memory of feeling ecstatic. Learn more about your ad choices. Hiya, Void! Happy St. Paddy's Day! Draw yourself a Guinness, perhaps even a drop of the ol' bottle, and let's dive into Irish history and the beginning of the Republic of Ireland 700 years too late. Is this story complicated, bloody, and silly? Yes. We discuss Liam Neeson being really tall yet sneaky, Alan Rickman as the devious politician ('cause of course he is), and Julia Roberts' weird accent (there has to be one in every Irish movie). This film is about flipping the script on the British Empire and removing Charles Dance way faster than we were expecting. All silliness aside now, this is a film about the birth of the modern terrorist textbook and the man who would lay down arms for the Irish Republic. This podcast contains fewer bad Irish accents from our hosts than we thought.Slainte

From a young age, actor Danny Kirrane had intrusive thoughts and suffered anxiety, overthinking and imposter syndrome. Acting and food was the perfect escape until his family life fell apart aged 18 which made his conditions snowball and created a food addiction and an unhealthy relationship with food. Danny found the courage to find therapy which has transformed his mindset and career. Although he can still struggle with anxiety and can still use food as a way to cope and push down negative emotions - his relationship with himself and an acceptance of what makes him human means he no longer punishes himself and is in control of a positive mindset. Danny generously shares his journey and has valuable insights and techniques for anyone inside and outside the performing arts industry who struggles with anxiety, rumination, overthinking, imposter syndrome and binge eating. More on Danny - Danny Kirrane is a leading actor in the period drama The Serpent Queen for Starz/Lionsgate co-starring with Samantha Morton and Charles Dance and he has just finished filming the Netflix comedy drama Baby Reindeer. Other lead roles in shows include The Sandman, Wasted, Don't Forget the Driver & Critical. Other shows include Peterloo, Skins, The Inbetweeners & The Pirates of The Caribbean. Danny has extensive theatre credits including Mark Rylance's West End production of Jerusalem. Danny completed a Physics with Astrophysics Degree at Leeds University before becoming an actor after training with the National Youth Theatre. Having experienced the extravagance of Moonraker, Michael, Rob, and Karen are not upset at all when the Bond series goes back to basics in For Your Eyes Only. John Glen makes his directorial debut, Roger Moore returns as an age-appropriate Bond, and there are plenty of twists and turns with Carole Bouquet (sigh), Julian Glover, Topol, and... is that Charles Dance?

This year for SPOOKY SEASON, we decided to do something a little different. Instead of talking horror movies or covering a Razzie-winner, we decided to let a friend talk us into covering something particularly controversial -- 2016's Ghostbusters: Answer the Call! Our friend and life-long Ghostbusters superfan Matt (AKA Toaster) joins us to talk about what did and didn't work about this Paul Feig film (spoilers: more than you might remember, considering this didn't get a single Razzie nomination). Jack gets talked into changing his mind on something, Matt reminds us of some of the awful nonsense held within the Sony Pictures email leak, everyone reveals embarrassing childhood stories surrounding the original Ghostbusters, and Joe forgets who was in this movie for second. *) Israeli strike kills hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza An Israeli air strike on Gaza's Al Ahli Arab Hospital compound killed at least 500 people, the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza has said, with many still under the rubble. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of mourning following the deadly attack. Israel's military has denied its forces bombed the hospital. Around 3,000 people have been killed in Israeli air strikes across Gaza since the war erupted on October 7. *) World reacts to Israel's strike on Gaza Israel's hospital bombing in Gaza triggered condemnation and fury in the Middle East and beyond. "Israel has crossed all red lines. ... We will not leave nor allow anyone to expel us from there," Palestine's President Mahmoud Abbas said. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: "Hitting a hospital containing women, children and innocent civilians is the latest example of Israel's attacks devoid of the most basic human values." United Nations Human rights chief Volker Turk shared a statement over the bombing: "Words fail me. Tonight, hundreds of people were killed — horrifically — in a massive strike at Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, including patients, healthcare workers and families that had been seeking refuge in and around the hospital. Once again the most vulnerable. This is totally unacceptable." The World Health Organization also condemned the deadly strike in a statement, said: "The hospital was operational, with patients, health- and care-givers, and internally-displaced people sheltering there.Early reports indicate hundreds of fatalities and injuries. *) Jordan cancels summit with Biden after Israel bombs Gaza hospital Jordan has cancelled a planned summit with US President Joe Biden and leaders of Egypt and Palestine, saying "there is no use in talking now about anything except stopping the war." The decision came after Israel's deadly hospital bombardment. The summit will be held "when the decision to stop the war and put an end to these massacres has been taken," said Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi. *) UN warns Israel against 'forcible transfer' of Palestinians in Gaza The United Nations has warned Israel against the "forcible transfer of civilians" in Gaza, which could be in breach of international law. Israel has demanded that residents of north Gaza leave for the south, hoping to clear the area of civilians in preparation for a perilous urban ground assault. "We have grave fears about the toll on civilians in the coming days. Military operations show no signs of abating," UN rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told a media briefing. And finally… *) Thousands of artists demand 'immediate' end to Israeli attacks on Gaza Over 2,000 artists demanded an "immediate ceasefire" and the opening of Gaza's crossings to allow residents to leave the enclave amid increasing tension in the region. Artists for Palestine UK released a letter signed by more than 2,000 artists that include famous novelists, singers, playwrights, filmmakers as well as famed actors such as Tilda Swinton and Charles Dance. "We are witnessing a crime and a catastrophe. Israel has reduced much of Gaza to rubble and cut off the supply of water, power, food and medicine to 2.3 million Palestinians. In the words of the UN's undersecretary for humanitarian affairs, 'the spectre of death' is hanging over the territory," it said. The letter criticised governments that expressed support for Israel and it said there will come a time when they are held to account "for their complicity."
