As we wind down this year's Black History Month (and our anniversary month — 11 years!), we've got a super-sized episode with someone I've wanted to have on the podcast for a long time — the one and only Mike Nicholls. Mike is an award-winning storyteller with deep roots in hip-hop culture and design, and is probably most well-known for creating Umber — the design and culture magazine that highlights the global perspectives of Black people and POC from around the world.Mike talked about how his love for magazines inspired him to create Umber, and shared some of the triumphs and challenges he's faced over the years as the brand has evolved from a magazine into a media platform. He also spoke about his time as a designer in Atlanta, Philly, and Chicago, how Oakland inspires his work, and talked about how being a designer and a hip-hop artist helps keep his artistic integrity intact. For Mike, his creative expression is about more than just making ends meet — it's about creating with a purpose and about telling stories that resonate on a deeper level and embrace the authenticity of Black and brown experiences!LinksMike Nicholls' WebsiteMike Nicholls on InstagramUmberUmber on InstagramA Life in Hip-HopFor a video of this interview, including a full transcript, visit revisionpath.com.==========Donate to Revision PathFor 10 years, Revision Path has been dedicated to showcasing Black designers and creatives from all over the world. Umber Ahmad is the baker extraordinaire and owner behind the buzzy Mah-Ze-Dahr bakeries in Manhattan, Washington D.C., and Arlington, Virginia, known for their nostalgic desserts, breads, and pastries. Before entering the food world professionally, Umber worked in finance as an investment banker and simply baked for fun on the side. But eventually, her passion became too strong, and after a little push from a certain Top Chef judge, she followed her dreams and opened Mah-Ze-Dahr in 2016.In this episode, Umber joins host Jessie Sheehan to chat about her journey into the sweet world of baked goods, the special meaning behind her bakery's name, and some of the delicious treats you'll find at Mah-Ze-Dahr locations. She also walks Jessie through her recipe for Nisu, a traditional Finnish bread with cardamom and coffee, which was the first thing Umber learned how to make. Click here for Umber's Nisu recipe. "I wouldn't say that everything I've written in this memoir is true. Some of it has been added on, invented, embellished. It's been a long process of remembering and becoming as I remembered. This is why I talk about the boundary between memory and fiction being blurred; because while you are writing something, there is some other process that takes over." - Sara Rai, author, Raw Umber, talks to Manjula Narayan about her memoir that touches on growing up in Allahabad, her grandfather Premchand, the ordinariness of death, and drawing from a pool of languages in her writing.

On the heels of its XPS 13 Plus launch, Dell Technologies continues this year's rollout of its reimagined XPS portfolio with today's launch of the XPS 13 and the reveal of the upcoming XPS 13 2-in-1. Dell's Thinnest and Lightest 13-inch XPS Laptop Because the course of a day can change with one email, text or spark of spontaneity, the XPS 13 (available with Windows 11 or Ubuntu 20.04) has been designed by Dell to be the ultimate on-the-go companion. Artfully thin, light and compact with up to 12 hours of long battery life, it slips seamlessly into a backpack, bag or purse, while still delivering the premium performance with 12th Gen Intel® Core™ processors to multitask with ease. True to the XPS aesthetic, it features our fifth generation, 4-side InfinityEdge display and enhanced sound for an immersive entertainment experience whether streaming music, video-chatting friends or watching the latest blockbuster. High brightness, improved clarity, precise detail with up to 4K+ resolution, and vivid colour bring the content to life, while larger speakers enable louder sound, deeper bass and a better overall audio experience. Eyesafe® technology intelligently manages light energy at the source, reducing harmful blue light without compromising the visual experience. Expertly crafted from premium materials, the XPS 13 delivers an inclusive approach to expressive colour, with unified tones inside and out that embody our mindful, minimalist approach. Available in softened shades of Sky and Umber, the tinted CNC machined aluminium is curated and premium. With the new XPS 13, Dell set out on a long and ambitious journey to “miniaturize” the motherboard to be 1.8x smaller than the one found in our previous XPS 13 (2021). In fact, it's the smallest motherboard ever created and fitted for a Dell PC. This created the architectural space needed to pack in a tapestry of new technologies and enlarge the speaker enclosures. The result is an XPS 13 that is thinner and lighter, yet better sounding, high performing and long-lasting. Taking Versatility to New Heights, the Xps 13 2-in-1 Is Launching This Summer As the lines continue to blur between work, life and learning, the XPS 13 2-in-1 reflects just that. This XPS device provides the ultimate flexibility allowing users to effortlessly transition between streaming, working creating and sharing content, and connecting. This is the first XPS device to offer 5G connectivity, which enables faster downloads, like WiFi speeds, but for mobile broadband. Streaming, downloading files, rich video content – it all happens a lot faster with the speed of 5G, so users can be productive and entertained no matter the location. The new XPS 13 2-in-1 also features eSIM technology, which allows users to go to different countries and connect to global carriers without having to switch SIM cards. The XPS 13 2-in-1 allows for a fluid transition from consumption to full productivity mode by attaching the magnetic XPS Folio, providing a complete laptop experience that supports three angle adjustments (100°, 112.5°, 125°) for flexibility and comfort. The natural writing and inking experience of the XPS Stylus will allow users to express their creativity, turning the device into a state-of-the-art sketchpad. Designed around an intuitive, landscape-first viewing mode – because that's how we see the world – the stunning display panel delivers high brightness and precise detail with up to 3K resolution and vivid colour. The high-resolution 1080p front-facing webcam offers a crisp and clear image and is placed horizontally for practical and productive video calls. The XPS 13 2-in-1 offers two connectivity options, standard WiFi 6E or 5G with WiFi 6E, each featuring a sleek, minimalist design. The standard WiFi 6E model is constructed of machined aluminium, just like the XPS 13 and is available in the subtle blue Sky colour. Unique to the 5G model, the back is made from Gorilla Glass 7 to optimize connectivity and eliminate ...

Edited highlights of our full conversation. This week's guest is Umber Ahmad - the founder of the rapidly growing bakery, Mah Ze Dahr. Her journey from banker to baker has been told before by everyone from Martha Stewart to Buzzfeed to Time magazine. Umber was a guest in the early days of this podcast in June of 2017. Over the last few years, I've come to know Umber well and in full disclosure I've worked with her both formally and informally as she launched and began to grow her business. When the pandemic hit us all like a tidal wave in March of 2020, I wondered how Umber would keep Mah Ze Dahr afloat. A business that depended hugely on a single brick and mortar location in Greenwich village didn't seem to have much future as her customers fled New York and the city turned into a post apocalyptic landscape of deserted streets and shuttered storefronts. Twenty months later, Mah Ze Dahr hasn't just survived it has thrived. That single location has turned into four and her online business has doubled. The leadership instincts on which the business is growing were honed in Umber at an early age. It is too easy to think of leadership as an abstract, intellectual, and even academic construct. It is not. Leadership is the most powerful change agent on the planet - this one or any of the others that we attempt to occupy in years and generations to come. Leadership is most visible when we are confronted by the twists and turns that life brings us. Coronavirus has been a series of hair-pin bends on the side of a mountain and many so-called leaders have climbed into the back seat and clung on for dear life. When faced with these moments we quickly discover whether we are a leader in name only, or whether we are willing to confront the challenges of whatever lies ahead. Whether we hit the brakes and stop, or whether we accelerate through the curve and head for the future.

This weeks guest is Mike Nicholls. He is an illustrator, artist, and the Founder of a publication with purpose called UMBER. @thisisumberIn this episode we talk about the story of how Mike moved to Switzerland because of Helvetica and how he has always been a fan of publications and editorial design. We talk about his rad first business card, some early t-shirt designs he created, and a project that he called the Visual Mixtape for what became UMBER. The deep dive on this episode is into the publication UMBER. We talk about how it came to be, the meaning and purpose behind it, the kickstarter campaign that launched it, and how the color and paper choices for the magazine bring it to life. This is such a great conversation where you have two 'print nerds' talking about creating awesome tangible design experiences for people. A gem of a conversation!
It's well documented that, for black people, navigating this world is hard. 2020 has brought on a whole host of new challenges, and shone a light on the prejudice and racism that people of colour must deal with and overcome. The murder of George Floyd reignited the Black Lives Matter movement and caused the world to engage in a real conversation about dismantling systemic racism, as well as the roles that individuals, communities and brands have in it. In this episode ThatSandy and AJFS71 are joined by another black member of team Recon, Pup Umber. They give insight into what it's like to be a black, kinky, gay man in the current climate, discuss the ‘preference' vs sexual racism debate, and talk on how they're viewed by other groups in society. How many people are truly pursuing their passion in life? What prevents people from pursuing what makes them happy? How can we begin to encourage ourselves and others to pursue a career that brings joy not only to themselves but to the community they live in? This week on the podcast we answered these questions through a conversation on the importance of tapping into our passion, and pursuing careers that truly connect with our overall purpose in life. We have a few helpful articles for you to indulge in:"Follow Your Passions and Success Will Follow" posted by Investopedia and "Do What You Love! How To Identify and Pursue Your Passions" posted by themuse.com. We acknowledged the process it takes to discovering your passion and the barriers that prevent people from going after what brings them joy. We offered advice, and tips on how to establish a strong mindset that is courageous enough to pursue the joys within your heart. We believe that our jobs should NOT be something “we do”, but instead, be something that contributes to our overall personal growth, and the greater good of our society. We encouraged our listeners to think critically about what they are passionate about, so they can in return, invest in a career that will grant them purpose.
