On this episode, coach A.K. has Co-Defensive Coordinator and outside linebackers coach for the University of Washington Huskys Ikaika Malloe. Malloe has 24 years of coaching experience and has been a defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, defensive line coach and linebacker coach at the college level.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - gathered post-practice on Friday to give their thoughts after Day 2 of spring football. And as much as they wanted to praise the quarterbacks, it was simply a day where the defense won out. But that doesn't mean the offense didn't get some licks in. The guys talk about the running back group, who is standing out, and how Richard Newton looked after missing Wednesday's practice. The media spoke with defensive coordinator Bob Gregory and outside linebackers coach Ikaika Malloe after practice, and the guys talk a little about their comments to the press, including an interesting prediction from Malloe when asked about OLB Bralen Trice. And, of course, there had to be some quarterback talk, so we went a few rounds talking about Sam Huard and his struggles during day 2, the instant feedback sessions he's having with OC John Donovan, as well as some analysis on the other two scholarship quarterbacks (Dylan Morris, Patrick O'Brien). On Friday, Washington Defensive Coordinator Bob Gregory and Outside Linebackers Coach Ikaika Malloe met the media for the first time in their new roles. Last season, it was Pete Kwiatkowski who served as both Washington's defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach, but Coach K is gone to Texas, so in the offseason re-shuffle, Gregory added defensive coordinator to his role as UW's inside linebackers coach. And Malloe moved into Coach K's position role, and new coach Rip Rowan took over Malloe's old job as Washington's defensive line coach. They not only spoke about the things they've seen during UW's first two spring practices, but they also talked about their new roles, why they took them and things they are working on to shore up deficiencies that showed up during the shortened 2020 season. On a special Valentine’s Day edition of the Double Dawgcast, we show no love to the failing basketball team, pass out some bog standard candies for the updated UW coaching staff, and try to talk ourselves into loving the hires, even if our immediate reactions to them range from apathetic to “fine”. Stay warm out there! 7:01 – We forgot to mention that Malloe retained his co-DC title as part of his move to OLB coach
One of the biggest moves of the Washington offseason was announced on Monday and the reaction was mixed among Husky Nation. Some were a little less than thrilled, while others took a more pragmatic approach. The most important question is to figure out why Jimmy Lake promoted within while figuring out how to replace Pete Kwiatkowski on the staff. Lake noted in his Monday press conference that after an exhaustive process where he interviewed several candidates from the professional and college ranks, it became evident that Bob Gregory was the right man to fill the open defensive coordinator spot. That move allowed Lake to fill the outside linebacker spot with Ikaika Malloe who and promote defensive analyst Rip Rowan into Malloe's old spot as the defensive line coach. Keith Bhonapha was then given the special teams coordinator title to go along with the running backs and thus, at least currently, Washington's 2021 coaching staff is complete. The guys from Dawgman delve into the coaching announcements, what they say about the process and what they believe it means for the roles on the coaching staff moving forward. Does this mean that Lake will be more involved in the defense or will Gregory be the game-planner and play-caller on that side of the ball? How much of an impact will Rowan have on recruiting moving forward? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
After two sub-par games, the Huskies know they need to get better on the defensive side of the ball and stopping the run is their first priority. Obviously it's a team game and no single position group is fully responsible for their lackluster performance in stopping their opponents' ground games, but defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe knows his guys need to improve and they have another tough test this weekend when they take on Oregon. In addition to what he thinks needs to improve, Malloe was also asked about the rivalry with the Ducks and what is the key to helping some of the younger players understand why this game is so important on many levels, not just the opportunity to win the Pac 12 North, and the fifth-year Husky assistant also talked about the Polynesian culture and why the Hawaiian connection has been so good at Montlake for so long. Senior defensive back Elijah Molden, whose father was a star at Oregon, also took the time to meet with the media and he said that even though his family has deep ties to the Duck football program, he wanted to carve his own path and Washington was the place he felt where he could maximize his talents and make a name for himself. He was also very succinct in what he knows he'll see from Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough this weekend when the two teams face off in the final game of the "regular" season. Even with the loss of his most experienced defensive lineman, Ikaika Malloe is still very excited about his room. Why is that? He says it's a hungry group of players who is always looking to learn. When you combine those traits with the talented on hand, you have a recipe for success. On Sunday, Malloe met with the media and talked about some of his youngsters, but the two he focused on were Jacob Bandes and Faatui Tuitele, two heralded recruits from their 2019 recruiting class who each saw playing time last season, but not enough to burn their redshirt seasons. To say he's excited about their future would be an understatement, but he realizes they are young and will still make a lot of freshman mistakes. That's why he's happy to have Josiah Bronson, Tuli Letuligasenoa and Sam Taimani returning. Each of those three players brings a different skill-set to the unit with Bronson adding the experience while the latter two are being counted on as the emotional leaders of the group. In addition to the media's conversation with Malloe, sophomore corner Trent McDuffie got his first chance to sit down with the media since he arrived on campus in the summer of 2019 and third-year linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio who talked about what it was like to receive his scholarship from the school in January and what his offseason has been like as he prepares to start from the jump once games get going next month. One thing became very clear Tuesday afternoon when talking with the Washington defensive coaches; they aren't waiting around to figure things out. There's no question the Stanford offense ran and threw circles around them in their 23-13 win over UW Saturday at Stanford Stadium, but the Husky coaches quickly looked at the tape Sunday, identified with the players what went wrong, and now are on to Arizona week. As Washington Defensive Line Coach Ikaika Malloe said, you can't feel sorry for yourself and you have to get past things quickly, because the next opponent sure isn't going to feel sorry for you. And Arizona definitely won't be feeling charitable this Saturday night in Tucson. Quarterback Khalil Tateis playing as well as any quarterback in the Pac-12 right now, and the Wildcats are second in the conference in points scored and total offensive yards. Â Not only do the Huskies have a ton of problems to work on, but they're going back on the road for another night game, so it's a little less sleep for the UW coaches this week, but one gets the sense in talking with Jimmy Lake, Pete Kwiatkowski, and Malloe that they wouldn't have gotten much shut-eye this week anyway. The frustration is apparent, but so is the focus and determination to set things right. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
With Dick Fain still on vacation, the AP's Tim Booth joins Soffty as a guest host for today. We haven't had a chance to see much from rookie receiver Gary Jennings, but finally he had a solid day. Is there a guarantee that a fourth-rounder makes the roster? There's certainly a spot for the young receivers on this roster. Have we seen enough out of D. K. Metcalf to convince us that he's deserving of the hype he's been getting? Switching gears to UW football, defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe joins us to talk about how his position group has been developing.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - each had breakout interviews with a number of defensive coaches and players after a spirited Day Three of UW fall camp, held on a hot and sunny Sunday on the east field next to Husky Stadium. They spoke with Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach Jimmy Lake, Defensive Line Coach Ikaika Malloe, Linebackers Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Bob Gregory, senior defensive lineman Benning Potoa'e, junior defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, senior linebacker Kyler Manu, and junior defensive back Elijah Molden. Curious how Jimmy Lake feels about moving guys around to find roles? How much does he place a premium on position versatility? Interested in why the program felt it was important to offer senior defensive linemen Josiah Bronson and John Clark scholarships? Malloe explains why. Does Gregory like pairing the inside linebackers, or is that just how it's working out? Benning Potoa'e has gained 20 pounds since moving to the defensive line. Is it possible he's actually feeling quicker? In talking with Onwuzurike, the native Texan talked about his transition to Seattle and what he's telling other guys from the Lone Star State who are thinking about playing for the Purple and Gold. Manu wasn't even sure he had a scholarship offer to Washington after he had originally committed to Boise State before Chris Petersen moved to Montlake.  Does Elijah Molden have a favorite position in the secondary? Or is he just leaving that up to Lake and Will Harris? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
One last time this season, we hear from Mike DeCourcy who recaps the Final Four and the NCAA Championship game, plus a look ahead to next season's Top 25, and UCLA's new coach. Softy make the trek over to a very windy Montlake this morning to check out some UW Spring football, and while there, eh could up with defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe and defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake to talk some Dawgs defense. Earl Thomas was on with Rich Eisen, and naturally he was asked about his time in Seattle. We've got the audio.
