On Friday, Washington Defensive Coordinator Bob Gregory and Outside Linebackers Coach Ikaika Malloe met the media for the first time in their new roles. Last season, it was Pete Kwiatkowski who served as both Washington's defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach, but Coach K is gone to Texas, so in the offseason re-shuffle, Gregory added defensive coordinator to his role as UW's inside linebackers coach. And Malloe moved into Coach K's position role, and new coach Rip Rowan took over Malloe's old job as Washington's defensive line coach. They not only spoke about the things they've seen during UW's first two spring practices, but they also talked about their new roles, why they took them and things they are working on to shore up deficiencies that showed up during the shortened 2020 season. After two sub-par games, the Huskies know they need to get better on the defensive side of the ball and stopping the run is their first priority. Obviously it's a team game and no single position group is fully responsible for their lackluster performance in stopping their opponents' ground games, but defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe knows his guys need to improve and they have another tough test this weekend when they take on Oregon. In addition to what he thinks needs to improve, Malloe was also asked about the rivalry with the Ducks and what is the key to helping some of the younger players understand why this game is so important on many levels, not just the opportunity to win the Pac 12 North, and the fifth-year Husky assistant also talked about the Polynesian culture and why the Hawaiian connection has been so good at Montlake for so long. Senior defensive back Elijah Molden, whose father was a star at Oregon, also took the time to meet with the media and he said that even though his family has deep ties to the Duck football program, he wanted to carve his own path and Washington was the place he felt where he could maximize his talents and make a name for himself. He was also very succinct in what he knows he'll see from Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough this weekend when the two teams face off in the final game of the "regular" season. Kedon Slovis missed all but two plays of USC's big win over Utah last week and there is still some concern he might not be ready to go by the time they take the field against the Huskies on Saturday. Washington defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake isn't necessarily worried about who takes the snaps (Slovis or Matt Fink) since the concepts of the Trojan offense are the same no matter who winds up distributing the ball, but he is more concerned about his players staying focused on their technique, their rules and making plays when the opportunity presents itself. Ikaika Malloe's charges have their work cut out for them this weekend with USC's running game and trying to get some quick pressure on the young quarterback for the Trojans. He likes what he has seen from some of his younger players, especially now that they've gotten reps on the field, and he feels like the depth that USC has at every position has allowed them to absorb some of the injuries they've suffered and not missed a step. Jordan Paopao loves the progress that his players have made, especially Hunter Bryant and his efforts as far as blocking is concerned. The question also had to be asked, what was it like when they talked to Devin Culp about missing his block on the fake field goal attempt and how it was a great learning experience for the young player. There's been a bit of adversity for running backs coach Keith Bhonapha to deal with as Salvon Ahmed has been determined to be week-to-week due to an injury, but he had players like Sean McGrew and Richard Newton step in and handle things and handled it well. Lastly, Bush Hamdan said the offense is making progress, but he never wants to say they are where they want to be because the moment you do that, you can lay an egg and now you're right back where you started. The Washington defensive players and coaches were all on the same page Tuesday when talking about what went wrong Saturday night against California. It was missed tackles, it was trying to do more than their assignment, which creates creases and gaps that the Golden Bears exploited. Whether it was Jimmy Lake, Ikaika Malloe, Ryan Bowman, Elijah Molden, or Myles Bryant, they all talked about staying assignment sound, not doing more than their responsibility, and handling the fundamentals of their roles - namely tackling. In fact, Bowman thought a lack of tackling at times was the reason for pretty much every breakdown the defense had against Cal. And that is going to be of paramount importance this coming Saturday, as the Huskies host Hawaii, a run-and-shoot offense that features a quarterback in Cole McDonald that can also tuck the ball and go if he needs to. The Rainbow Warriors are already averaging 429 yards passing per game, and have taken two Pac-12 scalps in their first two games of the season in Arizona and Oregon State. Can they make it a third on Saturday? Not if Death Row has their way. And it wasn't all bad news on Tuesday. Last season, Washington finished tied for 103 in the nation with just 24 sacks last season, it goes without saying that the Huskies want to improve that aspect of their defense this season. That's been a focus for the front seven all offseason and now that things are near the midway point of fall camp, the focus has turned toward who can get the job done coming off the edge and getting pressure on the quarterback.
