DawgmanRadio: It's Time to Talk About the Sugar Bowl Media Day

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds in New Orleans and Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund in Seattle - break down the biggest media day of the run-up to Monday's Sugar Bowl clash between Texas and Washington - Saturday's Media Day at the Caesars Superdome. This is the day where basically no one is off limits for either team, so it's a free-for-all for the media to find players and talk with them. And in the case of Texas, apparently they don't get to talk to any players or coaches until after games are played, so this was an even bigger day for them than it was for the UW media. The Texas Longhorns were first to the Superdome, and Kim caught up with former UW assistants Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate. Kim has detected an air from the Texas side of things that resembles more than just belonging in this game; they are supposed to be here. But UW? Apparently the Huskies still hold outsider status, but it's an odd juxtaposition because UW has been given loads of credit for what they've done during the 2023 season yet the media as a whole outside the Pacific Northwest aren't believers. They still think the Huskies are bound to slip up, even though they hold a 20-game winning streak - tops in the country. After a quick break to pay some bills, the talk turns to the coaches and players Kim talked to of the Purple and Gold persuasion, starting with JaMarcus Shephard and Scott Huff. Then the guys talked about the players Kim was able to speak with, starting with the Chuck Norris of UW Football, Zach Durfee and then moving onto conversations with Austin Mack, Dylan Morris, Curley Reed, and others. To finish off the podcast, Kim talked about his first impressions of being inside the Caesars Superdome and what the players might be dealing with on Monday in terms of the atmosphere, the lights, and more. And he also dropped an interesting nugget about New Year's Eve and how the Canal Street parade and following French Quarter proceedings could impact one team more than the other. Day 11 of Washington's fall camp is in the books and there were definitely some things to discuss. The guys from Dawgman.com -- Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters -- were on hand for the two-hour (plus) workout and they went through everything that stood out to them. For the first time in a week, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was behind center during the team periods of the practice. He didn't look like he missed a beat, making laser-like throws to his wideouts and connecting on some long passes that resulted in touchdowns. Not to be outdone, Dylan Morris had another very solid practice and continues to impress with his poise and play-making ability. Another player who has been easing his way into things is tailback Dillon Johnson. Since his return to full action, he's seen a few carries and reps with the first team, but he saw quite a few reps with the ones on Tuesday. The guys then turned their attention to some of the different plays they saw and all of the ways the defense was changing their looks and disguising their coverages. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - wrapped up an eventful week in the life of the Washington Football program. On Sunday they saw the fourth day of fall camp, one that did not include Michael Penix Jr at all. It was weird to not see the senior starting quarterback taking snaps, but as UW Head Coach Kalen DeBoer said after practice, it was an opportunity to give him a breather, as well as give turns to Dylan Morris and especially Austin Mack, the true freshman. The guys talk about watching a practice without Penix being involved, their first impressions of Mack as he finally got a heavy dose of action during the team periods, and other offensive players that have started to step up, like Arizona State transfer Daniyel Ngata. DeBoer also updated the situation with true freshman RB Tybo Rogers, and the guys talk about that as well. After a quick break, the talk turns to the other side of the ball, where the guys continue their praise of Voi Tunuufi and his move from the DL to EDGE. And is there some movement in the cornerback depth chart? Chris seems to think that maybe Thaddeus Dixon may have started to make a move on the starting cornerback job opposite Jabbar Muhammad, one that Elijah Jackson is also competing hard for. The guys also talk a little bit more about expansion and also how the move of UW to the B1G is already being felt in recruiting, as DeBoer talked about that after Sunday's practice. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - were at Husky Stadium Thursday for a beautiful Day Two of Fall Camp, and it wasn't quite as one-sided for the offense as it was on Day One. In fact, the defense more than held their own and made life a lot tougher for Michael Penix Jr and Dylan Morris. We spoke with the defensive players and coaches after practice, and recapped a lot of their thoughts here. One of the big talking points was the move of Voi Tunuufi from DL to EDGE, and also about the depth at defensive line that allowed that move to take place. We then moved to the linebackers and finally the defensive backs. One of the defensive backs we spoke about was Oklahoma State transfer Jabbar Muhammad, who spoke to Kim after practice. And then a quick look at the offensive side of the ball, including talk on the play of the day; a beautiful bomb from Penix to Denzel Boston as Boston glided past Jaivion Green for six. After a quick break the guys get right into the heart of what everyone outside of Husky Stadium was talking about; realignment. The Washington Board of Regents are set to have a meeting at 9 pm tonight, likely having to do with a potential move away from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten. Will it happen? If it does happen, when will the school make it official? And who might be joining Washington if they do make a move to the Big Ten? And when is the earliest this could happen? 1st-year Washington Football HC Kalen DeBoer has many big decisions and changes to make going into his first year in Seattle with the Huskies. Principally among them is deciding who his starting quarterback will be with a competition between Indiana transfer Michael Penix, Sam Huard, and Dylan Morris. Each showed some positive things at times during this year's Spring Showcase, but at the moment Penix and Huard seem like the top 2 options. On this episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Kaila Olin (@KailaOlin), CEO and analyst for RealDawg.com, to give insight into how Husky fans are feeling about the state of their football program. There is intrigue around Kalen DeBoer, but full-blown excitement will largely have to wait until he can produce on-field results. Going into 2022, Coach DeBoer has more questions than answers at this point--questions that might not be answered until the Fall. After a turbulent 4-8 2021 season, the Huskies have several areas they're hoping HC Kalen DeBoer and his staff can improve upon this Fall and beyond. With another expected strong core of DBs, Washington's run defense is a potential weakness going into this year. Kayla dives into why deciding on a starting QB this year is such a tough decision for first-year HC Kalen DeBoer. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! As Spring Football wraps up across the Pac-12, Washington Football has not yet named a starting quarterback--and there isn't a clear leader in the eyes of HC Kalen DeBoer. Each quarterback brings something to the table, but any one of Michael Penix Jr., Sam Huard, or Dylan Morris could be the Huskies' starter this Fall. Whoever emerges will need the team around him to continue to develop after a 4-8 season in 2021 that included a loss to Washington State in the Apple Cup. On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin takes a look at the Washington Huskies as they operate under first-year HC Kalen DeBoer. Alex Cook, along with several other defensive backs, performed very well on Saturday at the 2022 Spring Showcase. DL Zion Tupuola-Fetui is back from injury, and looks to be in good form for Washington's defense. Offensively, Lonyatta Alexander Jr. was the most dynamic player on the perimeter, and the ASU transfer showed some serious big-play potential. Going forward, the Husky fans should hope the offense looks more in sync than it did on Saturday--and as their HC gets to implement his schemes, they should expect it. The quarterback battle will be front and center, but a top ball carrier hasn't yet emerged for Washington either. Special teams, however, knows exactly who will lead the charge--Peyton Henry. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - wrapped up their first full viewing of a practice this spring, as up to 500 Washington fans joined them to check out what the Huskies have been up to so far in April. It was a normal two-hour practice, full of individual periods, some team periods, some one-on-one and 7-on-7 work, special teams, and more. So the fans that did show up this morning got a great sense of all the different items the coaches stress and work on to get the players as ready as they can for the summer player-run workouts. It's a relatively quick podcast today, around 20 minutes, because it was more of highlighting the players that did well and stood out during the team sessions. Julius Irvin was the lone turnover king today with an interception (Ruperake Fuavai looked like he recovered a fumble as well), while Michael Penix, Jr. and Dylan Morris combined for three touchdowns during their drives in the final team period of practice. Penix hit Giles Jackson twice on scores, one from 5-yards out, and the other from 20, while Morris hit a streaking Nick Juran down the middle of the field for 46 yards. Washington Head Coach Kalen DeBoer singled out the receivers and EDGE players Friday when he spoke to the media, and both position groups definitely had their moments today during the team periods. The Dawgman guys talk about their days, as well as offer some more color and insight as to how the practice went for those Washington fans that were unable to attend. It was also the same day the Huskies were hosting their coaches clinic for the high school staffs to come in and see what the new UW staff is all about, so there were plenty of high school coaches and recruits on hand to watch practice under sunny skies at Husky Stadium. On experiencing Oregon back in 2019 and the rivalry...Was only on the sideline for that game, but being a Husky fan growing up, I know how important this is and you can tell in practice, the intensity is ramped up and you can feel guys are ready. On what clicks for him late in games...I just try to be resilient. Whether we're up or down, things are going our way, you have to keep your head in it. The coaches equate it to a heavyweight match, you might lose some rounds, but it's a long fight and you will have your time to win. On Oregon's defense and forcing turnovers...They have really good athletes, they have a great pass-rusher, they are fast up front and they can make you throw before you're ready to throw. They do a good job. On getting all of the wide receivers healthy...It's great to look out there and see those guys out there and knowing that they can win 50/50 balls and make plays. They are big and fast and lenghty and they can make plays with the ball. They can catch the ball in traffic, they have big frames, and their run-blocking is outstanding. They take more pride in that than catching a touchdown. On not turning the ball over...We always focus on being on the plus side of the turnover margin and that starts with me. We have a big emphasis on it and it will just be a focus the rest of the way. On building a stronger bond with the coaches and receivers...We're around each other all of time and when I hear a play call, usually it was something I had an idea would be called and so I am understanding things better. We have a comfort-level now because we kind of understand each other. They know what I throw well, I know what routes they run well, stuff like that. Same with the coaches. On Cade Otton...Defenses have done a good job of taking him away and they know where he's lined up, but we also have different ways we can find him and line him up. On bearing the brunt of the criticism of the fans...I hear it when I am on the field, but I can only control what I can control. I know it's tough for fans to understand what happened on a play. They don't always know the ins and outs of things. I just focus on getting ready for the game and watching film and being ready when we go out there. It's the nature of the position. I knew that going in. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
