The Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has temporarily closed Washington County Public Fishing Lake in southwest Alabama after the discovery of an invasive aquatic plant— giant salvinia. The lake was closed Aug. 5. One of the most aggressive aquatic plants, giant salvinia, is a fastgrowing invasive species that has the potential to double in size every two to four days. The plant can quickly take over a pond or lake by forming thick mats on the surface of the water that blocks sunlight and reduces oxygen levels for fish...Article Link

Tim Washington, Co-founder and CEO of EV charging provider JET Charge, talks to Fleet News Group about the rapid rise of EVs in Australia, the start-up's growth and evolution since it began more than a decade ago as an installer for Tesla home charging stations in Melbourne, and its trial of a charge-as-a-service business model. When we spoke in late April, the latest data showed EVs sold in Australia in March was almost 10 percent of all new car sales for that month, a startling change from 1-2 percent of sales just a few years ago. Meanwhile EV sales in the UK and the US are slowing. “I think Australia will be one of the countries that really bucks the trend in relation to EV uptake,” said Washington, adding, “ And the main reason for that is because we are far more receptive to Chinese-made vehicles than the US and Europe, because we have no manufacturing to protect.” And, he continued, “They've only just started exporting to the rest of the world. The reason you haven't seen most of these brands is because they've been basically satisfying demand in China. As competition increases, and they look to grow their market share, they will start exporting. Australia is one of the Western countries that accepts these vehicles. And so I actually think we're going to see Australia outpace the rest of the world in vehicle adoption.”

An online auction of market animals raised by Washington County youth will be held July 10 and 11. The auction will feature beef steers, market hogs, and market lambs that otherwise would have been shown and sold at the cancelled Washington County Fair. Youth have been working on their projects for many months, and in some cases since last year. Local volunteers got together to coordinate an online auction to allow these youths to sell their projects. With the recent disruption in supply chain this auction offers an opportunity to purchase locally raised, high quality meat while supporting area youth. All animals have a guaranteed processing date; this is especially important as many processors are completely booked and are currently taking appointments well into 2021. Bidders will have the opportunity to purchase the animal outright or to donate a set amount toward an exhibitor. Farmers Grain and Feed, LLC of Allenton, WI, donated the funds to sponsor the web hosting expenses of the sale meaning all proceeds go directly into the youths’ pockets. The sale will be posted early next week at https://badgerstateauction.hibid.com/ For more information search Washington County Junior’s Virtual Livestock Auction on Facebook, contact Angie Loosen at 262.224.2348, or email washcoonlinesale@gmail.com.
