Margaret Nowaczyk's Marrow Memory: Essays of Discovery is a touching collection of personal essays exploring the impact of genetics, ancestry, and immigration on our lives. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery talks to Margaret, who is best-selling Polish-Canadian author and pediatric clinical geneticist. In Marrow Memory: Essays of Discovery Margaret Nowaczyk explores different facets of her life, from listening to the radio dramas of her childhood in Communist Poland to her work now as a pediatric clinical geneticist. Today, I'm honored to introduce you all to whistleblower, voice for the voiceless, freedom advocate, Pastor, man of God, entrepreneur, Polish-Canadian peaceful protester, hero, and the man who was given the nickname ‘The Get Out Guy' during the lockdown fiascos a couple years ago: Pastor Artur Pawlowski!Artur was recently put on my radar when a podcast supporter by the name of Patricia (SHOUT OUT TO YOU GIRL!) sent me some information on Artur and suggested I connect with him. After listening to an interview he did recently, I remembered hearing about his story here in America years ago and being incredibly inspiring. What I didn't know was the backstory of his life and I think you will all find his testimony as fascinating as did. From past familial ties with Joseph Mengele during the Holocaust (who - if you don't know - was given the nickname of ‘The Father of MONARCH Programming'), to essentially escaping communism with no money, no resources, and no connections, to starting over in Canada, to inevitably holding the line for freedom for an entire country during the lockdowns and pandemic for feeding and taking care of the homeless and needy and ultimately becoming an enemy of the state while captivating the hearts and minds of millions all over the world, Pastor Pawlowski and his family have truly been in and through the thick of it. The thing I love most about Pastor Artur's story is his unwavering commitment to God, his beliefs, his family, and to We, The People. While so many people were bowing to authorities, Artur was prosecuted over and over for refusing to back down, was falsely imprisoned, almost died, and is still in the fight of his life. He has a big trial coming up soon that will determine whether or not he will be imprisoned again, and we are bringing him on today to share his story and raise awareness of this important case taking place in Canada. As Artur says, “If they can take away the freedom of a Pastor, imagine what they can do to you”. I'm thrilled to bring Artur on the show and ask that you give him your full attention. His biography and life are interlaced with so many important lessons that we can all be inspired by and take to heart and I hope that all of you listening will jump in the fight with Artur and help be his advocate regardless of the outcome of his trial. We need to let authorities know we have our eyes on survivors and whistleblowers and that we stand by them! It's the least we can do for those risking their lives on the front lines for us. Before I finish introducing this week's guest, I wanted to give a reminder that if you are a survivor or whistleblower who wants to share your story on the podcast or wants to share any information privately with me, you can now email me at IMAGINEABETTERWORLD2020@GMAIL.COM! Please send me a briefing of who you are and how I can support you whether it's through podcasting or sharing information. I also recently started a Substack that I'd love to have your support on that you can find at www.EmmaKatherine.Substack.com. I have been doing weekly recaps and insights on my podcast and using this as a place to publicly journal my journey as an advocate for our children. On May 30, Jan Grabowski, a Polish-Canadian professor and historian at the University of Ottawa, was scheduled to deliver a lecture in Warsaw on the Holocaust, specifically on government attempts to suppress the degree of Polish collaboration during the war. But before Grabowski could start, a Polish politician smashed his microphone and began toppling speakers, accusing Grabowski of spreading "historical propaganda." Grabowski is used to attempts to stifle academic scholarship on the Holocaust by authorities in Poland, and by extension, on the history of antisemitism in the country. His latest violent encounter is only the latest example of how the memory of the murder of six million Jews is being challenged in increasingly assertive ways in Poland. This week, Professor Grabowski joins us as our guest. Welcome to The Honest Report podcast. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thehonestreport/message

Police are just doing their job when the shut down church services over Covid-19, right? We keep hearing that excuse but it's getting old and no longer makes sense. It's time to take a stand and tell the authoritarians we aren't going to bow down to their anti-science edicts. A pastor in Canada did that, and his example is one we should all be following.

From Canada and Brazil to Norway and Australia, the Indigenous experience in colonised nations holds startling – and deeply disturbing – similarities. The bestselling and award-winning All Our Relations: Indigenous trauma in the shadow of colonialism, by Anishinaabe and Polish Canadian journalist Tanya Talaga, skilfully folds together reportage and storytelling. In doing so, it shines a light on how racism and intergenerational trauma have produced a global crisis underscored by alarmingly high youth suicide rates. As part of the Stories Worth Telling series, Tanya speaks with Kamilaroi woman and Sydney Morning Herald Indigenous affairs reporter Ella Archibald-Binge about her powerful call for action, justice and a more equitable world for Indigenous peoples. Stories Worth Telling is a series created by the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas and Sydney Writers’ Festival. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

And talk about the book we did! We talked about why she wrote the book, how challenging it was to write, some of the surprises she came across during the writing process, and more. I had a wonderful time chatting with Marta and I know you'll get a lot out of listening to our conversation. Talking Points What inspired Marta to write this book? (1:12) Marta explains why she thinks people focus more on their health when trying to live longer (3:46) This is something that Marta tried and noticed it was helping her a lot as she worked towards "growing young" (6:42) What are some things that people can do when they feel like they are stuck in a sense of loneliness? (11:16) Marta talks about how helping others can boost your happiness (14:44) What does Marta think are some benefits of meditating? Why does she think people are so stubborn to try it? (21:31) Did Marta find it challenging to write a book that tries to convince people that there is a science-backed way to live longer and happier? (25:52) Does where one live play a role in "growing younger"? (31:58) Marta suggests one action someone can take to start this journey (34:47) Quote "Spend more time with your friends." - Marta ZaraskaHelpful Links https://www.growingyoungthebook.com/ (Growing Young: The Book) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1426218486?ie=UTF8 (The Blue Zones of Happiness: Lessons From the World's Happiest People) https://www.zaraska.com/ (Zaraska.com) The Productivityist Podcast Pick of The Week: https://tim.blog/podcast/ (The Tim Ferriss Show) http://productivityist.com/fivedollars/ (Take my 30 Days of TimeCrafting fundamentals course) Want to discover some of the books mentioned on the podcast? https://www.scribd.com/g/9a8d8 (Check out Scribd, my reading app of choice.) In Episode 75 you will hear: Interviews: • Students connect in a coast-to-coast event Quo Vadis Conferences Canada and the Polish Students’ Association (PSA) at the University of Toronto have teamed up to co-host an online conference just for students! POLcast is happy to be the event’s media patron. • Grammy Award nominee’s passion for jazz In February I conducted this carefree – pre-COVID-19 – interview with Kinga Heming, an amazing Polish Canadian jazz singer, who was born in Poland, moved to Ottawa when she was five and now resides in the small town of Kelowna in the Canadian province of British Columbia. I had just seen (and loved) her performance at the Kabaret pod Banką’s annual Kabareton (Cabaret Night) but most of all – she had been nominated for coveted Grammy Award.
In Episode 70 you will hear: Interviews: • A no-barrier approach to Polishness It’s fantastic that children of emigrants, Poles who settled in other countries such as Canada, even though they were often born and educated here, are interetsed in their roots, cultural heritage and want to incorporate their Polishness into their identity. There are a few Polish Canadian youth organizations, including the one and only Quo Vadis movement, which we have featured on POLcast. A Polish Canadian young professionals’ organization, whose launch we celebrated on POLcast last year - Konekt is a bit different from other such groups. It’s been growing and expanding. • Cooking, teaching and singing - all in one I am introducing to you our new POLcast collaborator - Maria Rozynska and her Just Be Cooking. Maria will be collaborating with POLcast and will have her own segment in each episode. Maria Rozynska created an innovative project in Toronto called Just Be Cooking - where people make food (not only Polish) under expert supervision, hear about its history and cultural signficance, listen to live music, and eat the food that they cooked in a communal meal. • How can languages save your life? How can knowing multiple lanuages help you stay alive? A Polish American academic Tadeusz “Tad” Haska survived WWII and the stalinist repressions thanks to his unusual linguistics talent. This incredible story was lovingly described by his granddaughter Stefanie Naumann in her book How Languages Saved Me: A Polish Story of Survival, released in September 2019 with Koehler Books. • Goodbye to Laura and Peter Żerański - please but their great heritage cookbooks (you can learn about them here) • Music - POLcast's surprise at the end of the episode.
In Episode 68 you will hear: Interviews: • How young Polish Canadians stirred up Polish youth around the world - 10 years of Quo Vadis On September 20-22, 2019 delegates from all over the world came to Toronto to celebrate 10 years of Quo Vadis, a unique youth movement, one and only in the world. POLcast talks to Ania Barycka, the conference spiritus movens, organizer and veteran. • An Australian Quo Vadis organizer's experience with polishness While at the 10th QV conference in Toronto, I met a really enthusiastic young Pole Szymon Motylek, who now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. His life is quite a story... • A Hongkonger with a Polish heart I met Ericsson Singh at Quo Vadis. Born in Hong Kong, he loves Poland, speaks the language and is very active in the Polish Club at the University of Toronto. He sees his future in Poland with his Polish fiancee Kinga. What a story! and • Smacznego! Eating Polish - Polish goulash (gulasz) • Music - POLcast's surprise at the end of the episode (a Polish Canadian nominated for a Grammy 2020).

2020 is Beethoven Year - he was born 250th years ago, in 1770 – and the record industry is lining up a vast number of releases in celebration. Berlin-based Deutsche Grammophon, not surprisingly, is spearheading the campaign with a huge Beethoven Edition and one of the earliest releses is a new set of the five piano concertos. The young Polish-Canadian pianist, Jan Lisiecki, joined the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for a tour which ended up in Berlin with a live recording. Lisiecki spoke to James Jolly at the Jurmula Festival in Latvia – where Jan was playing the Fourth Concerto with the Israel Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta, and he explained how this project came about and how the Fourth Concerto occupies a special place in his musical affections and career.

As many of you know, I like to host intimate little house shows in my back yard each summer. This episode of the podcast is the recording of one of the sets from our most recent back yard gig. This is a set by the show's headliner, Australian avant-cellist [Rob Knaggs](http://www.robknaggs.com/). Rob was back in Manitoba for the first time in quite a while (hear him talk about going home to Oz on a [previous interview](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/36da6f44a8cef6/) podcast), and he played a deadly set in the light of day – just Rob on the deck with the cello and no visuals. As mentioned in the intro, Rob's set was considerably louder than the others I recorded that afternoon, so there's a bit of clipping at times, but it doesn't take away from the Arctic-inspired beauty of his compositions. This episode is brought to you by Osborne Village's new pop-up record store, [Old Gold Vintage Vinyl](http://www.instagram.com/oldgoldvintagevinyl204/), and by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/). Polish-Canadian pianist Katarzyna Musiał loves to play Chopin. She also loves Gershwin. However, the music that truly stirs her heart? The music of Spain. With good reason, too. In her conversation with program director John Pitman, Musiał shares how Spanish music and culture became her passion: it was a part of her upbringing, thanks to her parents who took her there many times. “Spanish Heart” is Musiał’s second CD, and celebrates the diverse styles, rhythms and cultures of the Iberian Peninsula, in music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The familiar (Sevillanas, Ritual Fire Dance), and refreshing (Danza de la rosa is exquisite) populate a CD program that is as colorful as Spain itself. Katarzyna Musiał performed in Portland when she was here to record the interview; here’s hoping that her “Spanish Heart” will lead her back so that Portland audiences can experience her passion for this music sometime again.
This week I speak with Samantha who is of Polish Heritage. She is Canadian of Polish decent and has spent some time living in Poland. We chat about traditional Polish foods and how they fit or don't fit into a gluten free diet. We also talk about family celebrations and how relatives in Poland would view her special diet. Here's the recipe she sent for her Lemon Poppyseed Cake – Lemon Poppyseed Cake 1/3 cup poppyseeds 3/4 cup milk 1/2 cup butter 1 tbs lemon zest (or 1 tbs lemon oil/extract) 3/4 cup sugar 3 eggs 2 cup gluten-free flour blend 1 tsp guar gum 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 cup lemon juice Preheat the over to 325F. Place the poppyseeds and milk together in a bowl and set aside. Beat the sugar and butter together until creamy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each one. Mix in the lemon zest or oil. In another bowl combine the dry ingredients. Add the dry ingredients to the butter alternating with the milk and juice (mix milk and juice together first), making three dry additions and two wet. Stir the mixture well after each addition. Pour batter into a bundt pan and bake for 30-40 mins, until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely before removing from pan. If you'd like, whisk warm water, lemon juice and icing sugar together for a glaze to top the cake. Pour over the cake while it's still in the pan. Orange zest and juice can replace the lemon if you aren't a lemon fan. Dairy-free milk and butter can be used instead, but the cake will not brown. You can bake this in an 8" round cake pan (50-60 mins), but I found it best in baked in a bundt pan (30-40 mins). Young Polish Canadians have adopted this phrase as the title of their conferences. We venture into uncharted territory on this episode in conversation with Artur Winogrodzki of Polish-Canadian dub/reggae/electronic act Hypernashion. Despite the wide range of genres we've featured on this podcast, electronic music has always been kind of a blind spot, and despite host Sam's obsession with reggae, he hasn't previously been introduced to any from Poland. We go deep on reggae's connection to punk rock, on political and spiritual themes in music and on cross-cultural appeal. Hypernashion's recently-released In Dub album is out now on Artur's own Hyper Recordz label.
