With two picks in the top 18 in this year's draft, the Hornets addressed some needs to the roster by selecting Washington big man Hannes Steinbach with the No. 14 overall selection, and adding sharpshooting guard Christian Anderson with the No. 18 overall pick out of Texas Tech. Sam Farber, Sam Perley and Rob Longo break down both selections, and we also hear the thoughts of Hornets President of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson as night one of the 2026 NBA Draft comes to a close.

We're looking at what's being called the “Mississippi Miracle,” where a struggling U.S. state boosted reading results by returning to traditional methods like explicit phonics instruction. It paired that with tougher accountability, including holding schools—and in some cases students—more responsible for meeting basic reading benchmarks. For this conversation, Evan is speaking with Michael Zwaagstra, vice-principal in southeastern Manitoba, deputy mayor of the City of Steinbach, and senior fellow with the Frontier Centre for Public Policy.

Most leaders think AI is a technology shift. It's not. It's a behavior shift. In this episode, I sit down with Melanie Steinbach—former Chief HR Officer at McDonald's, Cameo, and MasterClass—to unpack what's actually changing inside organizations as AI becomes embedded in how we work.Melanie has spent her career solving business problems through people. But she challenges a core assumption: that performance problems are solved by replacing people. Instead, the real leverage comes from coaching, clarity, and creating the conditions for people to do their best work.We explore why AI doesn't replace leadership—it exposes it. And what that means for AI leadership and decision-making inside modern organizations. Same tools. Same access. Completely different outcomes. The difference comes down to how leaders think, make decisions, and design systems around their teams. We also unpack a critical shift most organizations aren't ready for: redefining what “valuable work” actually means. For years, being busy—and being in meetings—has been treated as a proxy for value. But when AI handles execution, value moves to judgment, context, and decision quality. If you're leading teams, navigating transformation, or trying to understand where AI actually fits in your organization, this conversation will change how you think about leadership, work, and performance.Key TakeawaysSolving business problems through people isn't about replacement: The real leverage comes from coaching, clarity, and creating the conditions for people to succeed.AI exposes how you lead: The same tools produce radically different outcomes depending on how you think and make decisions.Clarity drives performance: When expectations are vague, even high performers struggle to deliver.Context is now the constraint: Information is everywhere, but leaders create value by helping teams interpret and act on it.Busy work is losing its signal: Meetings and activity no longer define value—decision quality does.AI requires behavior change, not just adoption: The advantage goes to leaders who change how they work, not just what tools they use.Judgment is the differentiator: AI can generate answers, but leaders are still responsible for making the call.Additional InsightsPerformance problems are often system problems: Most people want to do a good job, but unclear expectations and missing context get in the way.Onboarding is being rebuilt in real time: AI enables “what you need to know, when you need to know it” instead of static training programs.Leadership is shifting from answers to perspective: The value is no longer having information—it's providing context and nuance.Meetings were a proxy for value: Being busy created the illusion of impact, but that signal is breaking down fast.Work is being unbundled: Roles are no longer fixed—they're collections of tasks being redistributed between humans and machines.Episode Highlights00:00 – Episode RecapMelanie Steinbach reframes how organizations solve business problems, shifting the focus from replacing people to unlocking their potential through clarity, coaching, and better systems.01:30 – Guest Introduction: Melanie SteinbachFormer Chief HR Officer at McDonald's, Cameo, and MasterClass, Melanie has led transformation at scale across some of the world's most recognized organizations.03:49 – From Replacement to DevelopmentMelanie shares the moment she realized solving business problems through people isn't about hiring differently—it's about developing the people you already have.06:35 – Why People Want to Do a Good JobMost employees aren't underperforming by choice—they're missing clarity, skills, or expectations.08:24 – The Cost of Missing ClarityUnclear systems create friction, confusion, and unnecessary failure—even in high-performing environments.11:18 – Culture Shapes BehaviorIn some organizations, asking questions signals curiosity. In others, it signals weakness—and that changes everything.18:14 – AI Changes How People LearnOnboarding and development become dynamic, personalized, and driven by real-time needs.22:02 – From Knowledge to ContextLeadership evolves from delivering information to helping teams interpret and apply it effectively.24:41 – Presence Becomes a SuperpowerAI reduces cognitive load, allowing leaders to show up focused, prepared, and ready to make decisions.28:06 – Why Humans Still MatterTechnology amplifies systems, but judgment, meaning, and connection remain human.32:00 – Rethinking Valuable WorkBeing busy is no longer proof of impact—decision quality is.35:16 – A New Metric for PerformanceHigh-quality decisions—made faster with better context—become the new standard.38:58 – Thinking Is the New AdvantageCreating space to think clearly becomes one of the most valuable leadership skills.41:55 – Work Is Being RedefinedJobs are breaking into tasks, with AI handling execution and humans focusing on judgment.42:33 – Why This Moment MattersMelanie shares why she's stepping in to help organizations navigate this shift across industries.44:04 – Closing ReflectionsThis isn't a small shift—it's a fundamental redesign of how work gets done and how leaders create value.

Steinbachonline reporter Judy Peters recently interviewed mortgage professional Lisa Gryba about practical strategies as financial pressures rise.
In this episode of The Sound of Economics, host Rebecca Christie and Bruegel's Zsolt Darvas discuss the European Union's next seven-year financial plan with MEP Johan Van Overtveldt, chairman of the European Parliament's budget committee. Negotiators have until the end of 2027 to figure out roughly €2 trillion in funding, with the parliament and member states not expected to sit down together until next year. How can the EU pay for public goods? Will countries and regions be willing to overhaul the way they finance farmers and other key sectors? Meanwhile, the EU may need to revisit proposals to borrow against the Russian central bank's frozen assets, held at Euroclear, within two years. The next budget will need to accommodate support for Ukraine as well as Europe's current mandates.Related research: Christie, R., J. F. Kirkegaard and Z. RUNDOWN Mitch opens Episode 361 barely able to speak. Area code 361, is a surprisingly stacked Corpus Christi résumé — from Farrah Fawcett's iconic poster-era fame to Eva Longoria, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Lynyrd Skynyrd's longtime keyboardist Billy Powell. The college football playoff drama continues, Notre Dame spent weeks ahead of Miami in the rankings only to get leapfrogged on a Saturday when neither team played — and then "boycott" bowl season in peak Irish fashion. From there they pivot to the Seahawks' 26–6 win in Atlanta, breaking down Sam Darnold's Jekyll-and-Hyde day (ugly first half, near-perfect second), Rashid Shaheed finally becoming a real factor in the passing game, and rookie safety Nick Emmanwori looking like a heat-seeking missile on an already elite defense. Rick breaks down a wild Selection Sunday, starting with the baffling late flip that dropped Notre Dame behind Miami despite neither team playing — a move he believes was driven more by ACC politics than football. He argues Alabama should've been penalized for an awful SEC title game showing, outlines why championship games now feel meaningless, and even says this version of Alabama "has no chance." Mitch, Brady, and Jacson break down Seattle's 37–9 dismantling of the Falcons, a performance highlighted by back-to-back games without allowing a touchdown and the defense's most dominant two-week stretch since 2014. Devin Witherspoon and Nick Emmanwori delivered superstar-level days while the returns of Julian Love and Jarran Reed stabilized the unit even further. On offense, Sam Darnold shook off a miserable first half and exploded for 182 yards and three touchdowns after halftime. Mitch brings Brady and Joe back together for the first Mariners No-Table since the season ended in Toronto, diving straight into Seattle's early offseason headline: the five-year, $92M Josh Naylor deal — a rare moment where the Mariners actually did what "everyone agrees they should do." The guys break down why the front office moved so fast, whether it was an overpay, and what it signals to the clubhouse and the league. From there, they examine the next dominoes (Polanco, bullpen additions, third base uncertainty), debate Cole Young's floor vs. ceiling, unpack the Harry Ford trade, and even entertain the dream-but-unlikely scenario of trading for Tarik Skubal. The award-winning author who used her strict Mennonite upbringing to tell its unspoken stories.Miriam Toews is one of Canada's most acclaimed novelists, but her journey began far from the literary world. Raised in the conservative Mennonite town of Steinbach, Manitoba, she grew up surrounded by deep faith, strict expectations, and a culture where silence often covered over difficult truths. The town didn't even have a train station to keep it separate from the 'worldy' practices of contemporary society. At home, her devout father Mel's lifelong battle with mental illness and her mother Elvira's rebellious streak created a world of tenderness and tension — one Miriam would later transform into funny and powerful fiction.Miriam reflects on how she became a writer: the restless imagination that sparked during childhood, her early escape from the confines of her community, and the personal losses that shaped novels such as A Complicated Kindness, All My Puny Sorrows, and Women Talking. With success also came the cost of telling stories about identity, family, mental health and faith — stories her community never dare speak aloud. This programme contains references to suicide. If you are suffering distress or despair and need support, you could speak to a health professional, or an organisation that offers support. In this episode of The Sound of Economics, Bruegel's Rebecca Christie, Zsolt Darvas and Jacob Funk Kirkegaard discuss the European Commission's budget plan and the battle for the next multiannual financial framework. Will the budget be enough to cover the EU's needs? What is an “own resource” and how do the member states contribute? Can the EU overhaul the way it supports agriculture, and does it make sense to merge support for farmers with support for lower-income countries? And how will Europe find the money to help Ukraine and finance its own defence and security needs? As the financing debate heats up, Europe will need to decide what public goods it values enough to invest in. Relevant research: Darvas, Z., R. Dom, M.S. Lappe, P. Saint-Amans and A. David Steinbach reacts to the breaking FOMC minutes. He thinks that it's a good time to buy real estate and says the private markets are “a very unique opportunity.” Investing in “hard assets” will “do well in the times we're in right now,” he argues, comparing today's situation to the ‘60s. “Making some smart decisions today will pay dividends in the coming years.”======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-...Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-...Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/19192...Watch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplu...Watch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-net...Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
