NDP Candidate Tanille Johnson visits Cortes Island

Roy L Hales/Cortes Island - NDP candidate Tanille Johnson recently visited Cortes Island, where 20 people were waiting to see her in the Pioneer Room at Mansons Hall. The event was sponsored by Cortes Island's Climate Action Network, which also provided lunch.  Johnson said she prefers small meetings like this,  “I've been spending most of my time going to people's houses, meeting with their friends,  I like to think that I'm a very truthful, honest person and I actually care about what happens in this riding. It means a lot to me, like my family, generations and generations, lived here.” Recent polls suggest the Conservative Party may have lost its early lead in this pre-election period. Both EKOS (February 26) and Ipsos (February 25) released polls that show the Liberals edging forward in what has once again become a two party race. The NDP are a distant third and fading.  That's on the national level, it has always been a very different race in North Island-Powell River. If you include the results from the former Vancouver Island North riding, the choice has been NDP or Conservative for decades. Rachel Blaney has been our MP since 2015, but her predecessor John Duncan was a Conservative and the Conservatives have been a close second in every recent federal election.  Now Blaney is stepping down. 338Canada's most recent projections still depict Johnson as the underdog in our riding, but those projections will only be released on Sundays until the election is declared. A great deal has changed since last Sunday. More will change in the weeks to come.  Tanille Johnson began,  “ I was born and raised in Campbell River,  that's my home territory and my home community in more ways than one.  I am a member of the We Wai Kai First Nation, one of the three Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ Nations that make up the greater Campbell River area and a little bit up into Sayward for our traditional territory.  I didn't grow up on reserve. I spent a ton of time on reserve, but my house was down in Willow Point in Campbell River, which started me off in an interesting place in my life.”  “I purposely moved back from Victoria eight years ago because I wanted to be home. I wanted to be home for me and for my kids.  I did not want to raise a family outside of my traditional territory. I'm extremely connected and loyal to this area. I'm not going anywhere.  I recognize that Ottawa is very far away and  I will be in Ottawa when I have to be in Ottawa but I will have big accountability for showing up in the riding and having my ear to the ground and showing up when you need me and being where I need to be.”  “I first got into politics in post secondary education.  I dove in with both feet.  I was on the Native Student Union Council, I was on the UVic Student Society Board of Directors, I was on the UVic Senate. I sat at the Equity Advisory Council for the School of Social Work, federally with the Canadian Federation of Students on their Federal Executive Board as well as their Provincial Executive Board.”

Sept 24 2023 - Ouellette Run for Libs Rattles NDP Candidate in Southdale

The Great Canadian Talk Show

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2023 40:43

Our latest election interview covers lots of ground, from issues being heard on the doorstep in Southdale to another candidate picking an issue with our guest! Robert-Falcon Ouellette has always been an articulate and engaging guest with TGCTS and our City Circus Shaw TV series. His career includes two Top-4 finishes in Winnipeg Mayoral elections, sandwiching a busy term as an inner-city Liberal MP. Now he's trying to come up the middle in a swing suburban riding between Health Minister Audrey Gordon and an NDP staffer running with an alleged chip on her shoulder that you'll want to hear about.  Liberal seats in the last House were held by Lamont, Dr. Jon Gerrard and Cindy Lamoureux, and Ouellette thinks if they succeed and are joined by another member like him to attain Party status, it could make a big difference in the Legislature. You can sponsor podcasts /donate by email/or send along story tips: Email martygoldlive@gmail.com 8:04 -  RFO talks about health care, and has logical insights into voters being incredulous towards NDP leader Wab Kinew's promise to get 3 ER's up and running without having staffing and training solutions; at the same time, he says, there's a lot of dissatisfaction with the PC government, and with the incumbent MLA's work as Health Minister. 13.40 - Hear about the ripple effects of addictions, crime and homelessness on Windsor Park - with an unbelievable number of houses on one street hit by break-ins! He casts a critical eye at EndHomelessness Winnipeg missing its target. One of the results: "It's not normal to live in a Canadian city where you refuse to go downtown because you're afraid." He calls for better medical and mental health services including providing structured day-to-day activities for the patients-and mentions a favorite subject of rail relocation! 19.00 - RFO brings up NDP candidates living far outside their ridings and our report What's In A Name? Ask Nahanni Fontaine. "I think it's great to go to these protests but sometimes it's about doing those (helping residents) things really well, " calling it "the basic work" of an elected public servant. 20.50- Hear RFO's opinion about Wab Kinew's avoidance of restorative justice for his past altercations. Ouellette goes against the progressive radical image of FN politicians. "Institutions are actually what keeps society together! ... you ignore them to your detriment" citing Winnipeg religious institutions "doing the hard work" of feeding and sheltering the indigent, but not getting support from Christian-bashers like Fontaine. "Anger doesn't get you very far." 22.20 - RFO describes how Renee Cable interrupted her NDP canvassing to confront Ouellette: "Why are you running here? You're going to be splitting the vote." "She said I should have called her to talk to her before I ran as if I need to request her permission to put forward different ideas." He told Cable, "It seems like my very existence is disturbing to you" - and shaking with anger, she started to make it personal about RFO's kids. He says that in the NDP, some people believe they are owed something. He addresses the bigger issues about intimidation and partisan politics in Manitoba- "are we allowed to say anything we want?" In RFO's view, "The big parties aren't very creative with their policies, they don't work very hard and they've repeated a lot of the same mistakes" and "people voting in fear" need Liberal MLAs to provide balance. He cites a lot of factors that are driving down voter turnout and hurt the health of our democracy. 33:07- Marty Gold previews upcoming episodes, including a tip about a bureaucratic cause of ER overcrowding, and a series on inner-city housing, the homeless, and political failures. Wellington-Halton Hills is a big riding, extending from Puslinch to Centre Wellington and out east all the way to Erin and Halton Hills, so experience counts, and it's hard to get more experience than Ted Arnott who's represented the area since 1990. Can anyone challenge 32 years of longevity in what's a fairly safe Conservative riding? Diane Ballantyne would like to volunteer. Make no mistake, this is an uphill climb for the NDP candidate, who's running for the second time to represent Wellington-Halton Hills at Queen's Park. In 2018, Ballantyne finished in second place, and increased the share of the NDP vote in the riding by nearly 10 per cent. Not too shabby, but Arnott secured 54 per cent of the vote. Arnott would go on to become Speaker of the House, and Ballantyne would go one to win election as the Ward 6 councillor on Wellington County council.  Now it's time for the rematch, but is Wellington-Halton Hills in the market for a change? It's hard to have a better NDP-friendly resume than Ballantyne, who, aside from her position on County Council, is also a teacher at Centre Wellington District High School, sits on a committee with the College of Nurses of Ontario, and is a board member of the United Way of Guelph-Wellington-Dufferin. And on this first edition of the Wellington-Halton Hills Politicast, Ballantyne will make her case to cap Arnott's run at eight terms. Ballantyne joins us to talk about why she's running again for this office, why Arnott offers such stiff competition, and what it will take for NDP leader Andrea Horwath to become the next Premier. She will also talk about the issues facing Wellington-Halton Hills, and how they compare with the issues facing other parts of the province. Also, she'll discuss whether or not COVID-19 will be a factor in the campaign, and how she intends to make a winning impression on the campaign trail. So let's head back to that riding next door on this premiere edition of the Wellington-Halton Hills Politicast! To learn more about Diane Ballantyne and her campaign, you can visit her website here. In 2020, 5.5 million Canadian workers lost their jobs. In that same year, 47 Canadian billionaires saw their wealth increase by 78 billion dollars. But rising inequality did not start during the pandemic. In fact, since the 1980s, the richest Canadians have increased their wealth, while middle- and low-income Canadians saw theirs diminish. Between 1982 and 2018, the top 1 per cent of Canadians saw their income double, the upper middle class saw an income increase of around 10 per cent, and everyone else's salary didn't see any increase at all. In fact, those salaries didn't even keep up with inflation. Wealth inequality in Canada is staggering. Last September, Statistics Canada reported that the wealthiest 20 per cent of Canadians currently hold over 65 per cent of the wealth in the country, while the bottom 40 per cent – almost half the country, holds just 2.5 per cent of wealth as of 2020. Coming out of the pandemic, governments are looking for ways to reduce debt and fix systemic issues in healthcare and long-term care, as well as fill gaps in the social safety net that were made apparent in the last two years. This week Angella MacEwan joins the podcast. Angella is the senior economist at the Canadian Union of Public employees, a policy fellow at the Broadbent Institute, and a former federal NDP Candidate for Ottawa Centre. I will be speaking with her about the steps the Canadian government has taken to reach this point of inequality, and the Broadbent Institute's plan to tax the rich.

Laura Kaminker is running as the NDP candidate for Mississauga Centre's MPP position. She has a history of speaking dismissively about wearing a poppy on Remembrance Day and on acknowledging military veterans. But is this enough of a reason to dismiss her from the election, or are we focusing too much on comments from years ago in this election? Guest: Joe Warmington, Columnist with the Toronto Sun - Then, inspired by his talk with Joe Warmington, Roy shares his experiences as an on-air host who has been given the opportunity to uphold his responsibility to “tell it like it is” to the audience without interference. And discusses what would happen if he ever felt compromised. (Photo: THE CANADIAN PRESS/Justin Tang) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
