We kick off 2025 with a radio recreation of one of the all-time great mystery films and a birthday salute to its star. Dana Andrews reprises his role as a detective obsessed with the woman whose murder he's investigating as The Lux Radio Theatre presents "Laura" (originally aired on CBS on February 6, 1945.) Then Andrews plays another cop on the trail of a killer in "The Crowd" from Suspense (originally aired on CBS on September 21, 1950), and finally he's undercover agent Matt Cvetic in "Courier for Disaster" - a syndicated adventure from I Was a Communist for the FBI.

The golden age of radio meets the atomic age with these four mysteries. First, Bulldog Drummond hunts for missing radium in "Claim Check for Death" (originally aired on Mutual on January 17, 1947). Next, villains plot to wipe out New York with an atomic weapon, and only Mr. I.A. Moto can stop them in "A Force Called X07" (originally aired on NBC on May 20, 1951). The feds try to find the man who's smuggling out secrets of a new atomic bomb in "The Case for Dr. Singer" from Suspense (originally aired on CBS on June 28, 1951). And undercover agent Matt Cvetic has to thwart a Red plan to wiretap an atomic scientist in "The Line is Busy" in I Was a Communist for the FBI. Note: Unfortunately the intro to this week's show was lost due to a technical issue!

In solidarity with SAG-AFTRA, Paul and Corey have decided to change things up: For the duration of the TA voting process, they will: 1) cover only films about labor unions/strikes/solidarity/etc.; 2) not cover any new releases (that includes Corey's Pass or Plays); and 3) not recommend any streaming services for where you can find these films. Following Corey's choice, Norma Rae (1979), Paul wanted to make a right turn. Look at things from another perspective. So, the idea was to journey back to the Red Scare and watch some anti-Communist fare. I Was a Communist for the FBI (1951). Based on the true (lol okay) story of Matt Cvetic, the film follows his life as he acts as an informant for the FBI while he pretends to be a proud member of the Communist Party (CPUSA) in Pittsburgh. Hooooooo boy, comrades! This thing sucked. What makes propaganda effective or at the very least enjoyable? Was this guy the biggest jagoff in Pittsburgh? The answers to these and more lie within...

Enjoy two espionage episodes of I Was a Communist for the FBI A) 5/11/52 Card Game in the Clouds w/ Dana Andrews B) 6/7/53 Fifteen Minutes to Murder w/ Dana Andrews In 1941, the FBI asked American citizen Matt Cvetic to work undercover for the United States Government by joining the Communist Party and report back on their activities. After emerging in 1950 to testify before congress about his experiences, Cvetic's exploits were soon chronicled in magazines, on the silver screen, and in a taut and entertaining radio series based on his real-life adventures. The 1951 film I Was a Communist for the FBI starred Frank Lovejoy. The success of the film spawned a radio series starring Dana Andrews which ran from April 23, 1952 until October 14, 1953. The film and radio show are, in part, artifacts of the McCarthy era, as well as a time capsule of American society during the Second Red Scare. The purpose of both is partly to warn people about the threat of Communist subversion of American society. The tone of the show was ultra-patriotic, with Communists portrayed as racist, vindictive, and tools of a totalitarian foreign power, the Soviet Union. The radio series was syndicated by Frederick W. Ziv to more than 600 radio stations and had the cooperation of the FBI. Real-life undercover agent Matt Cvetic dealt with great stress as he covertly infiltrated a local Communist Party cell. There were many personal and family problems cause by his being a Communist, as well as a certain amount of mental torment. Cvetic worked tirelessly to uncover Communist plans, and to help the FBI thwart them, while avoiding the snares the Party set for informants within their ranks.

Agent FBI - Serial 1, Episode 1 - 20 Title: I Was a Communist for the FBI Overview: I Was a Communist for the FBI was based on a series of stories written by Matt Cvetic that appeared in The Saturday Evening Post. The stories were later turned into a dramatic film nominated for an Academy Award as the Best Documentary Feature of the year, best-selling book, and a radio show starring Dana Andrews that ran for 78 episodes from April 23, 1952, until October 14, 1953. The story follows Cvetic, who infiltrated a local Communist Party cell for nine years and reported back to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on their activities. I Was a Communist for the FBI consisted of 78 radio episodes syndicated by the Frederick W. Ziv Company to more than 600 stations, including KNX in Los Angeles, California. The program was made without the cooperation of the FBI. Real-life undercover agent Matt Cvetic was portrayed by Dana Andrews. The show had a budget of $12,000 per week, a very high cost to produce a radio show at the time. The program frequently dealt with the great stress that Cvetic was under, as he covertly infiltrated a local Communist Party cell. There were many personal and family problems caused by his being a Communist as well as a certain amount of mental torment. He saw the party as being hypocritical and a great danger to society. The film and radio show are, in part, artifacts of the McCarthy era, as well as a time capsule of American society during the Second Red Scare. The purpose of both is partly to warn people about the threat of Communist subversion of American society. The tone of the show is ultra-patriotic, with Communists portrayed as racist, vindictive, and tools of a totalitarian foreign power, the Soviet Union. When the Polit bureau of the American Communist party ordered his district leader to report to them in New York, Matt Cvetic was instructed to take over his duties. That was a week ago, and he'd heard nothing more from either the Polit bureau or his district leader. Cvetic was concerned because the closer you get to the top of the Red organization, the closer you're watched--and he knew there was always a chance that he'd make a slip that could be fatal. Also, Bill Stern in "The Colgate Sports Newsreel" from November 23, 1949 with Frank Sinatra.
