Episode 516: Red, Red Whine This week Host Dave Bledsoe woke up brutally hungover behind a trash dumpster in the Tacony neighborhood of Philadelphia meaning a whole New Year has started.  (It's tradition) On the show this week, we end our hiatus without actually going on hiatus. (Turns out Dave was just sad) We start our generational pivot with the first leg of the tripod that holds up the Baby Boomers, the Red Scare!  Along the way we discover that Dave isn't a communist (Turns out their parties are not his kind of parties) then we dive right into the history of international Communism with its bearded Daddy, Karl Marx. We breeze past the first Red Scare and honestly most of the second one, focusing on the major players.  (Oddly, mostly Republicans) We talked about why they were looking for a communist under their beds (because they didn't like Jews) and why they had to persecute anyone who might be a communist.  (Again, they don't like the Jews).  Then we take a quick look at the impact of the Red Scare on American society and how it formed the Boomer generation. (It is why so many of them don't like the Jews) Our sponsor this week is Your Local Communist Party, there are six of us, how scary can we be? We open with a 50s newsreel about international Communism and close with Kuerdas who prefer reds. The divisions between the states came to symbolize the nation's red/blue divide in the starkly different responses to the pandemic and the rivalry between their ambitious and politically powerful governors. But we also share a lot of the same concerns, including a housing affordability crisis and disasters caused by extreme weather. In this hour we team up with South Florida public radio station WLRN for a post-election conversation about where the country is headed and what unites and divides us. My love is like a red red rose is a beautiful love song written by Robert Burns around 1792. Robert said that it was an old Scots song that he had collected in the country. I believe it may well have been old, but Robert must have rewritten it. I believe this as it has very modern language which includes the concept of geological time, which was practically unheard of at the time.  This may have come from Roberts friendship with James Hutton, who was a pioneer in this field. It was first published in 1794 by Pietro Urbani in his work, Scots Songs, although it had a different tune to the one we know today. Pietro was a singer composer from Milan that Robert met in 1793. The song we sing today, with the tune we know today,  (called low down in the broom), was first put together by a Paisley composer / editor called Robert Archibald Smith in 1821. The publication was called 'Scottish Minstrel'.My love is like a red red rose is a beautiful song, check out some versions of it on youtube. It's well worth it.

Red means many things to many people, from love to KFC to the sock you left in a load of whites that one time. Red coats the Bible as well, from Esau's “bowl of that red stuff” to the rider on the red horse to the blood of Jesus. This week we cover the messages God circles in red; the red lights that signal go instead of stop; the red-headed preacher and killer who became a country music legend; and how Russian Communists tried to destroy religion but left enough behind to inspire a terrific board game.Hal Hammons is the preacher for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. Lakewoods Drive is an autonomous group of Christians dedicated to praising God, teaching the gospel to all who will hear, training Christians in righteousness, and serving our God and one another faithfully. We believe the Bible is God's word, that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that heaven is our home, and that we have work to do here while we wait. Regular topics of discussion and conversation include: Christians, Jesus, obedience, faith, grace, baptism, New Testament, Old Testament, authority, gospel, fellowship, justice, mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, Twenty Pages a Week, Bible reading, heaven, hell, virtues, character, denominations, submission, service, character, COVID-19, assembly, Lord's Supper, online, social media, YouTube, Facebook.

Welcome to the fifth & final episode of Season Seven of the Bagley Wright Lecture Series on Poetry podcast. Season Seven is comprised of lectures written and delivered by Douglas Kearney during his tenure as a Bagley Wright Lecturer. Today we'll hear “Read Red / Red Read: Putting Violence Down in Poetry,” a collaborative performance with Val-Inc, given in person at the Ace Hotel Brooklyn in partnership with BOMB magazine, November 9, 2021. Douglas Kearney has long engaged the conflation of violence and entertainment in U.S.American culture, from badman folklore to postcards of lynchings. Still, there are questions that haunt. What are the ethics of representing violence? How might poetic aesthetications of brutality transform, reinscribe, or abet violence? Through a versioned series of essayistic vignettes presented in collaboration with SoundChemist, Val-Inc, Kearney entangles his encounters with violence as a reader, poet and performer. Visit us at our website, www.bagleywrightlectures.org, for more information about Bagley Wright lecturers, as well as links to supplementary materials on each lecturer's archive page, including selected writings. Douglas Kearney's book based on his BWLS lectures, Optic Subwoof (Wave Books, 2022) is available here. Music: "I Recall" by Blue Dot Sessions from the Free Music Archive CC BY NC

“This little quirk runs in our family.” This week is all about seeing red as the ladies discuss Adina's pick and their first Pixar movie of the season, “Turning Red.” Rachel pairs this with a delightful and appropriately named cocktail, “Red Moon Over Manhattan,” and also shares some facts about both Canada and China's wine regions. Adina gushes over the *iconic* Director Domee Shi and her contributions to this movie, while Rachel discusses the meanings of the Red Panda in different cultures. Together they get deep about their childhood, adolescence, and overall favorite moments from this 2002 throwback. So grab your tamagotchi, mix up your cocktail, and rewind back to Turning Red! Did you know humans have the ability to “taste” through smelling? Well we do, and it is through a process called retronasal olfaction. This fancy sounding term is just some of the ways that food scientists, such as our guest speaker this week, recent M.S. graduate and soon to be Ph.D. student, Jenna Fryer studies how flavors, or tastes through smell, are understood and what impact external factors have on them. Specifically, Fryer looks at the ways fires affect the flavors of wine, a particularly timely area of research due to the recent wave of devastating wildfires in Oregon. Hosted by Miriam F. Lipton and Lisa Hildebrand.Check out the ID blog here: https://blogs.oregonstate.edu/inspiration/2022/04/22/red-red-smoky-wine/
