It's that time of the year when we lower Steve into a pig trough, talk Severance, and discuss a random viral video literally MOMENTS before it expires. This is the problem with talking about memes on a podcast that goes up days later. Even if we wake up at 4:23, dive into a pool, drown our faces in ice water, and then finish working out by 4:25, we've already missed the meme's window of relevance. Whatever. What's new. Drink your water and keep up the hustle. Music/SFX: If you like our sounds, sign up for ONE FREE MONTH on us at Epidemic Sound! We desire the desire of the other, particularly the Big Other. Why don't you stop waking up early and "grinding" and instead pick up some Lacan or Gebser or Jung and try "reading." Or not, whatever, what do I know. These influencers are fit as heck. That dude from that video could snap me like a soggy twig, so whom am I to spit out thinly veiled jealousy in the form of intellectual dazzling? That said, I may be operating alongside a strand of jealousy but that strand does not cancel out the patchwork quilt of dorkiness that subsumes these consumerist, capitalist losers into a malaise of never-ending performance, these marionette dolls for corporations and icons for the dim-witted. No one reads these diatribes, anyway. I could say anything I want down here. The description of these podcasts is my oyster. And I am a pearl. Pearl Buck. The Good Earth. Full circle. May we all walk each other home.

THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE ANNOUNCE THEIR RELEASE OF NEW ALBUM ‘TIMESCAPE' EXCLUSIVE ZOOM INTERVIEW WITH LEGENDARY DRUMMER CHRIS SLADE   Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho.  Chris Slade started his career at the age of 16 with Tom Jones before he changed his name to Tom Jones. Chris contributed significantly to Jones's world tours and recordings throughout the 60s. Slade was a founding member of Manfred Mann's Earth Band in January 1971. He was to spend seven years with the band, recording eight albums and achieving three UK Top Ten singles in the process: 'Joybringer' (No. 9, October 1973), ‘Blinded By The Light' (No. 6, September 1976 & a multimillion selling #1 in the USA) and ‘Davy's On The Road Again' (No.6, June 1978). After Earthband he spent two years with Uriah Heep, one year with Gary Numan and one year with David Gilmour in 1984. He later teamed up with Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers and bassist Tony Franklin to form The Firm. They produced two excellent albums for Atlantic in 1985 and 1986 that earned them chart and radio hits including 'Radioactive' and 'Satisfaction Guaranteed.' Chris became the drummer of AC/DC over the course of the next five years, playing on their acclaimed 'Razors Edge' Album, and giving a killer performance on their concert DVD “Live from Donington.” After his stint with AC/DC, Chris joined the prog-rock band Asia, Chris recorded with them on their 2000-2004 studio recordings, 'Aura' and 'Silent Nation' , and put forth his trademark energy-filled live performances on all the subsequent tours that ensued over the next five years. Between 2005 and 2010, Slade played drums for German guitarist Michael Schenker before forming THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE in 2012, and at that time marking 50 years as a professional rock drummer. THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE has announced their new album "Timescape" which will be released worldwide on July 19th on BraveWords Records. "Timescape" contains completely original new tracks and some of Chris Slade's favorite covers. PLEASE WELCOME LEGENDARY WELSH DRUMMER/SINGER/SONGWRITER CHRIS SLADE TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS …   PURCHASE THE NEW ALBUM BY THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE entitled Timescape, available July 19TH on BraveWords Records. The double album will be available on digital platforms, CD and possibly as a double vinyl album. Feat: Chris Slade, Bun Davis, Stevie Gee, James Cornford, Michael J Clark • THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE was formed in 2012 with handpicked musicians to celebrate my then 50-year career as a professional rock drummer since starting with Tom Jones at 16 years of age, taking in Manfred Mann, The Firm with Jimmy Page and AC/DC along the way. • We, as The Chris Slade Timeline band have toured UK and Europe extensively playing hits of this lengthy career. After being asked many times if we were going to produce any new original songs of our own, I finally decided to put pen to paper and do something about it, so with the help of my band mates I present TIMESCAPE, our debut album. This album includes a playlist of 9 original songs and a selection of hits from the many artists I have been privileged to perform with over the last 60 years. I hope you enjoy it!   “Side one which consists mostly of original material is an eclectic and innovative mix of awe-inspiring hard and heavy progressive rock melodies, the album plays out much like a discerning Rock Opera. Timescape is a gratifying and artistic musical concept. Side two features an incredible selection of exceptional covers spotlighting many of the band's Chris has been a member of over his illustrious 60-year career. Timescape by Chris Slade Timeline is a sensational album! 5 stars!  ...By music journalist Ray Shasho   FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHRIS SLADE TIMELINE VISIT https://chrisslade.com Official website https://www.facebook.com/ChrisSladeACDC Facebook https://www.instagram.com/chrissladedrums Instagram https://x.com/ChrisSladeDrums Twitter https://www.instagram.com/the.chrisslade.timeline Chris Slade Timeline Instagram https://www.bandsintown.com/a/5974162 Bands in town http://bravewordsrecords.com BraveWords Records   CHRIS SLADE Discography With Tom Jones Along Came Jones (1965) A-Tom-ic Jones (1966) From The Heart (1966) Green, Green Grass of Home (1967) Live: at the Talk of the Town (1967) 13 Smash Hits (1967) Delilah (1968) Tom Jones Live in Las Vegas (1969)   With Toomorrow Toomorrow (1970)   With Tom Paxton How Come The Sun (1971)   With Manfred Mann's Earth Band Manfred Mann's Earth Band (1972) Glorified Magnified (1972) Messin' (1973) Solar Fire (1973) The Good Earth (1974) Nightingales & Bombers (1975) The Roaring Silence (1976) Watch (1978)   With Terra Nova Terra Nova (1980)   With Kai Olsson Crazy Love (1979)   With Frankie Miller Falling in Love (1979)   With Uriah Heep Conquest (1980)   With Gary Numan I, Assassin (1982)   With Denny Laine Anyone Can Fly (1982)   With David Gilmour David Gilmour Live 1984 (1984)   With The Firm The Firm (1985) Mean Business (1986)   With AC/DC The Razors Edge (1990) Live at Donington (1992) AC/DC Live (1992) "Big Gun" (1993)   With Asia Aura (2001) Silent Nation (2004)   With Bloodstock Creator of Worlds   With Damage Control Damage Control (2007) Raw (2008)   With MIWA My Wish Is Your Command (2011) Reach Out and Touch Me (2018)   With The Chris Slade Timeline Timescape (2024) The Chris Slade Timeline Vol. 1 (2014)       Support us on PayPal!

[ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] The year is 1938 and the nominees are: 1. Luise Rainer - The Good Earth 2. Irene Donne - The Awful Truth 3. Greta Garbo - Camille 4. Janet Gaynor - A Star is Born 5. Barbara Stanwyck - Stella Dallas - In 1938 Luise Rainer became the first performer to win back-to-back Oscars as well as the first performer to have two Academy Awards. Her first Oscar was won the year prior for The Great Ziegfeld. If you weren't aware, this is perhaps one of the most controversial Oscar wins because Luise Rainer, a German born woman, is portraying a Chinese woman in yellow face in The Good Earth. A big part of her win for this Oscar was the major financial support from the MGM studio she was represented by. The other nominees gave career standouts in their respective films but were freelance actors and couldn't campaign to the same lengths as a major studio. Luise Rainer was only in Hollywood for a total of 3 years before eventually leaving as a result of the lack of interest in “the glam” of movie stardom. Regardless, she set an Oscar record that has only been repeated (in leading roles) by Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, and Tom Hanks. Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Chris as they discuss.

Interview with Bill Million of The Feelies Formed in Haledon NJ in the 1970's, The Feelies have now released six albums including their critically acclaimed and influential debut Crazy Rhythms, which was voted 49 in the top 100 albums of the 1980s by Rolling Stone magazine and chosen by Spin Magazine as #49 of the best alternative records of all time. Their music has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and roll. Supporting the release of their first four albums the band appeared on the The Late Show With David Letterman and in concerts with The Patti Smith Group, R.E.M., and Bob Dylan as well as touring with Lou Reed. In 2008, the Feelies ended a 17-year sabbatical as a group to open for long-time admirers Sonic Youth at Battery Park and then resurrected their tradition of playing low key gigs at strategic intervals throughout the year rather than doing lengthy tours. In 2009, they were invited by R.E.M. to perform at Carnegie Hall in “The Music of REM” charity concert benefitting music education programs for underprivileged youth, then by the artist Dan Graham to play an acoustic set at the opening of his first American retrospective, held at the Whitney Museum: Dan Graham: Beyond at the Whitney Museum of American Art. That same year Bar/None re-issued Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth, this being the first band-sanctioned CD release of the former. In 2011, they released a new studio album Here Before of which England's The Wire enthused, “Here Before picks up as though they'd never left. The second line- up is fully present, and the basics of their sound have filtered through so many younger bands (from Yo La Tengo to SF Seals to The Chills) that the music possesses a great kind of faux- familiarity. ‘Time Is Right' sounds something like The Terminals doing a Stooges tribute tune. It - and some of the Velvets riff - lifts that occur during the album's later moments- make me remember how nuts this group seemed 30-plus years ago.” In honor of their 40th Anniversary Bar/None Records re-released their third and fourth albums,Only Life and Time for a Witness in early 2015. As a child in Los Angeles, Wong Liu Tsong knew she wanted to be an actress. Adopting the screen name Anna May Wong and dropping out of school to pursue her passion, Wong landed her first lead role at age 17. Despite Hollywood racism that would limit the types of roles she would receive, Wong's impressive career spanned over 60 films, in addition to stage and television work, and she was the first Asian American woman to be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Joining me in this episode is Dr. Yunte Huang, Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and author of Daughter of the Dragon: Anna May Wong's Rendezvous with American History. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode music is “Anna May Wong singing in three languages -Rudy Vallee Radio Show from July 11, 1935,” posted on YouTube by Robert Fells, who attributes the original discs to Jerry Haendiges. Doug will be taking on the role of executive director of the Anabaptist Climate Collaborative and has been an environmental activist, along with being a pastor. Doug preached from Genesis 1:2-3 and Jeremiah 4:23-28. He spoke of the incredible biodiversity loss we have experienced throughout the world. It's in noting these distressing realities of our current climate situation that we can find the compost out of which will grow our action and our hope.

Episode 369: A Tribute to My Cherished Mentor, Barbara Winter Episode Notes I participated in an online Celebration of Life for Barbara J. Winter on May 20th, 2023. Barbara crossed over to the other side on October 28, 2022, at age 80, after suffering from a long illness. Our paths had overlapped many times since our first luncheon in 1994. This is my tribute to my cherished mentor, Barbara Winter.  Barbara will forever be known as the pioneering self-employment advocate, writer, and teacher who spent decades pondering the question, “Why aren't we all self-employed?” Her optimism and ferocious curiosity will live on in millions who read her books and newsletters and attended her seminars. Her legacy will be carried on through her daughter Jennie Hinrichs and her three grandchildren: Zoe, Zach, and Noah. “I want my grandchildren to know that Grandma's house is always a safe place to share their ideas,” she said in our Portfolios of Ideas podcast conversation. Tears are spilling down my cheeks as I listen and think of how much her grandchildren miss her. Her spirit will always be with them. Barbara is one of those people I wish had defied death. In 1994, I noticed Barbara lived in Minneapolis after reading the book she authored in 1993, Making A Living Without A Job: Winning Ways For Creating Work That You Love. The book was revised and reprinted in 2009 and is still relevant today. She agreed to have lunch at one of her favorite spots, and now mine, the Good Earth restaurant at the Galleria in Edina, Minnesota. She would bring ten books in a brown paper bag each month and share stories with advice tucked in. We did this lunch and book routine until she followed her daughter to Valencia, California, where she lived until her death. I would buy her books and give them to clients. When I taught at two private Universities for 13 years in entrepreneurship, her book was mandatory reading. Barbara named a seminar after her book, Making A Living Without A Job. It became her most popular seminar. She never envisioned teaching this seminar worldwide and holding annual joyfully jobless jamborees for decades, but she did. She said she would wake up on each seminar day and think that someone's life is going to change today. Her enthusiasm was her litmus test to keep going. She added other newsletters and seminars to her repertoire: Winning Ways monthly newsletter, Joyfully Jobless, Establish Yourself As An Expert, and I wouldn't say I like Marketing. The celebration of life event fit Barbara's desire to educate. She was a massive fan of creating tip lists. Barbara always taught the nine lessons below. Her colleagues and friends, Terri Belford and Marianne Cantwell shared them with us, and in turn, I would like to share them with you. 9 Lessons for Leading and Living by Barbara Winter   Be Playful. Barbara was a big proponent of approaching work as play and having a sense of humor, especially around absurd situations and or being playful at your work. She was a great role model. “An acid test for if you are in the right place,” Barbara would say, “is when the work becomes more interesting the longer you do it.” Treat what you do with a sense of adventure and lightness. She made everything an adventure wonder. She shared her passion for the artist Chu Huly with everyone. She had a lifetime of missions that took her all over the world with friends and colleagues. Let yourself be an apprentice. Have a beginner's mindset and learn from those who have gone before you. We learn by doing. Do the thing that others wouldn't do. Roll up your sleeves and get to work realizing your dreams. Barbara always said that entrepreneurship is not a spectator's sport. Small is beautiful. She helped me see the beauty in everything and every small business, including mine. Barbara believed in the quality of small-group learning and small business. She didn't want a huge audience or to do a TED Talk.

Drummer Stan Demeski has held down the crazy rhythms of the Feelies for four decades, with a stint in the alt-rock supergroup Luna in between. He replaced the late Anton Fier in the Feelies and played in the related bands the Trypes, Yung Wu and the Willies before appearing on his first Feelies album, the classic The Good Earth. Demeski takes us inside the idiosyncrasies and dynamics of this propulsive, percussive group as they appear in Jonathan Demme's Something Wild, jump to a major label, take a 16-year break and resume making music together. He also recounts his Luna experience, how that ended and what it was like for him, a huge Velvet Underground fan, to tour with Lou Reed.

Despite some identifiable influences (Velvets, Modern Lovers, Eno…), the Feelies are a band like no other. Their sound is crisp, their playing precise and explosive, their songs indelible in an often-mysterious way. Glenn Mercer and Bill Million provide the jittery, chiming guitars, while Brenda Sauter delivers melodic bass lines amid the propulsive thunder of Stan Demeski's drums and Dave Weckerman's percussion. Singer-songwriter-lead-guitarist Mercer, who views his voice as just another instrument, takes us through the Feelies' pursuit of its unique vision over 40-plus years, including such brilliant albums as Crazy Rhythms and The Good Earth, that Something Wild appearance, an early shakeup and later breakup, and a triumphant last roundup that will last...how long?

In this week's episode, Sadler and the Senator have the privilege of interviewing one of the greatest people to ever walk this Good Earth, NASCAR® great and Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip, in a compelling and honest talk about his life in stock car racing and his place in history in the sport. Learn about his thoughts on the 2001 Daytona victory when we lost Dale Earnhardt, his love of the sport, and his dedication to not only being a steward of racing history, but also his involvement in broadcasting to keep the future of the sport as an important aspect of the American experience. In Senator Stanley's Leaning Right moment, sponsored by Senator Stanley's college roommate Tom Graziano and his Farmville restaurant Charley's Waterfront Café, Bill and Hermie discuss Virginia Gov. Youngkin's unique and powerful initiatives to create private/public partnerships to save and revitalize Petersburg, one of the great historical cities of Virginia. Sadler and the Senator then relive “private citizen” Hermie's foray into local politics and the speech he made at a local county's Republican Committee (and the petty politics of those that may challenge him in a primary), as he determines whether to throw his hat in the ring for the newly created 17th District for the Virginia State Senate. And in Hermie's Turning Left moment, sponsored by Stanley's wife's company Vista Installations, the boys talk about the races at Watkins Glen, the insertion of F1 racers into the cup race, the finish between Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott, and the good showing by our friend Chris Rice's team Kaulig Racing in both the Xfinity and Cup races with AJ Allmendinger. Hermie also discusses the charter system, and how the racing would be even better if the Michael Waltrip Racing Team was still a force in NASCAR®. As always, The Leaning Right and Turning Left With Sadler and The Senator is sponsored by Pace-O-Matic, an entertainment company which develops gaming software that players love to play and can use their skills to win, every time. Pace-O-Matic is focused on people having fun, the small businesses that love them, and generates millions of dollars in Virginia. Their skill games are played in restaurants, bars and convenience stores all across Virginia, and the revenues from these games help these family-owned businesses thrive.   Learn more about your ad choices.
