THE SHY YETI at Christmas. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 22nd 2024. This week's special guest our old friend PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself who, because it is very nearly Christmas, has decided to pop round for a bit of a festive chat next to our FAB TOWERS crackling seasonal fireplace. So, we'll be talking about all sorts of nonsense including his favourite traditional festive viewing which includes several horror films, the bauble that was once JIM ROBINSON from NEIGHBOURS, those BERGERAC and DOCTOR WHO Christmas Specials, MORECAMBE AND WISE, THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, INSIDE NUMBER NINE, THE AVENGERS, and a whole load of other archive television related nonsense as we meander through the next hour. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Meet Morecambe and Wise -- that's Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise -- who formed one of Britain's most illustrious and best-loved double-acts of all time. From beginnings in post-WWII Great Britain the lads soon found a home first on radio, then with television series and specials that spanned 20 years. And, for many of those years, they produced Britain's most watched Christmas special -- a real tradition. Morecambe and Wise were versatile, with both men capable of song and dance as well as either the comic or straight man role. That versatility made them a huge influence on future British comics including Ben Elton and Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. Not bad for a couple of song and dance men who just wanted to make people laugh. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Morecambe and Wise? Morecambe and Wise had oodles of chemistry -- perfect for two guys who could flex between the comic and straight man parts with ease. Here is some typical banter with Shakespeare the focus. https://youtu.be/WMXz2SCqtfg?si=rMO19GXNPcWZD__6 As one of Britain's top variety shows, Morecambe and Wise were the place to be for pop stars including a man who was the biggest of all back in the early 1970s -- Tom Jones! -- who shows a bit of comedic flair himself. https://youtu.be/e66z6nnWKq0?si=Siv0_Hkb0kiPECpT One of Morecambe and Wise's secrets was the quality of their scripts, mostly written by Eddie Braben who also was the pen behind David Frost and Ronnie Corbett. It allowed them to draw top-notch guest stars including Andre Previn, here helping the boys with a classical music bit (taken from the 1971 M&W Christmas Special). https://youtu.be/R7GeKLE0x3s?si=sBr-gYcqixGc1l8j

A rediscovered episode of Morecambe and Wise is set to be broadcast in colour for the first time on Christmas Day. The footage was found by Eric Morecambe's son Gary in the attic of his mother's house. The 45-minute episode had been wiped by the BBC so the expensive tape could be re-used. The episode turned out to be the comedy duo's first show made for BBC One, which originally aired 8 October 1970 after they moved from BBC Two. Eric and Ernie became the nation's most popular double act and their show became unmissable television. Today's Martha Kearney speaks to Gary Morecambe, son of Eric Morecambe, about finding the tape and the duo's legacy. (Image credit: BBC/PA)

The SFF Podcast pre-season continues with the return of Krys as host, joined by one John returning from holiday as the other remains on his. It's a bit like the Celtic first team squad returning from World Cup duty. Speaking of the World Cup, chat quickly turns to England's disappointment at an otherwise brilliant tournament. VAR gets some discussion after it's pivotal place in one of the best finals in living memory, while the tournament itself also went down a storm. A bit like Neymar. Closer to home, we're still four out of four in terms of European representation, although the pessimism is clear about how much longer that might last. Discussing third qualifying round opponents feels a bit odd given this was also the second qualifying round preview! But that's UEFA for you, cram in as many qualifiers as possible to weed out the wee diddy league teams before they meet the small fish from the big pond who get a bye to the group stages. And as for group stages, the Betfred Cup is well under way in the sectionals for all the non-European competitors. Someone at the SPFL really needs to check a calendar though and remember it's 2018 and we haven't had two points for a win in 25 years. It's a quick review though as not many shocks have happened, other than the greatest football result known to comedy... even if it was on penalties. Next week we should have a preview of the upcoming league season, but enjoy this chat as we get back into the swing of things. Feel free to contact us on twitter sffpodcast

With Kirsty Lang. Morecambe and Wise are remembered and revived in a new stage production called Eric And Little Ern, which follows on from a TV biopic of the double-act, a one-man show about Eric Morecambe, and the award-winning The Play What I Wrote. The writers and stars of this latest homage, Ian Ashpitel and Jonty Stephens, discuss the reasons for the comedians' enduring appeal. Performance poet and rapper Kate Tempest won this year's Ted Hughes Prize for innovation in poetry for Brand New Ancients, an hour long spoken story depicting the intertwining lives of two families. As she begins a tour which will take the show all over the country, she explains who the Brand New Ancients are and reveals the play that changed her life. James Bond producers found themselves embroiled in a legal dispute with Kevin McClory - a co-writer of the 1965 film Thunderball - over who invented the cat-stroking supervillain Blofeld. As a result, the character was left on the shelf for 30 years but with news that the relevant rights have been acquired from the McClory estate, it looks like our most famous screen villain could be given a new lease of life. To reflect on the character of Blofeld and why he has become so ubiquitous in popular culture, journalist Stephen Armstrong came to the rescue. And 50 years after his death, the Chronicles of Narnia writer CS Lewis has been honoured with a memorial stone in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, explains how the selection process works. Produced by Ella-mai Robey.
