In this episode, Danny is joined by comedian Pat Monahan. Pat is half Iranian, half Irish and claims he used to spend his holidays in customs. A regular at the Edinburgh Fringe, Pat has won TV competitions, Take The Mic and Show Me The Funny. He was also the warmup man for the late Paul O´Grady and alongside fellow comic Bob Slayer, holds the world record for the longest hug. He and Danny reminisce about some of the stars they worked with over the years, including Johnny Vegas, Robin Williams, Paul O´Grady and Barry Cryer. Pat shares how he got into comedy and was able to use his experience of racism and life in general as inspiration. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS The way comedians create their material has drastically changed. Pat explains how. Everything you do in life, especially comedy, is about your upbringing. People used to think Pat made up the fact he is Iranian/Irish. Iran used to be very secular. Paul O´Grady was very supportive of others. Pat never swears on stage or talks about sex on stage. The reasons for this are quite surprising. Australian comedy shows are decades behind the UK. Woke-ness is nothing new, it just changes its name. Nowadays people get offended on behalf of other people. Pat has experienced racism and regularly uses it as material for his act. Bob Slayer did a live gig while breaking the hug world record with Pat. Pat regularly gets mixed up with the singer from Train. BEST MOMENTS “We didn´t Google stuff we had to make it up .” “Why would you put a to-do list on social media?” “When I first came to London and told people I was a Man City fan, I used to get the sort of looks reserved for the terminally ill.” “I was just motor mouthing, because I was scared of a heckler getting in there.” “You lose about 70% of the audience.” “If you try and please everyone … you're gonna fail completely.” “Young people today wouldn´t last 3 minutes in the 80s. They´re just so gentle.” “You might have hecklers, but they will be positive hecklers.” “I have to pull my punches.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/patmonahan https://www.facebook.com/patmonahan HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. With a wide range of knowledge ranging from motor mechanics to opera to breeding carnivorous plants, he believes learning is the most effective when it's fun. Join this vibrant discussion with Bob Cryer, son of comedy legend, Barry Cryer, as he divulges anecdotes of his father's incredible life and career from his new book, Barry Cryer: Same Time Tomorrow, including the story of how Cryer called up his literary hero, J.B Priestley, and went over for tea with the Monty Python troop. J.B. Priestley, born in Bradford in 1894, was a prolific writer, playwright, and social commentator. His works often delved into themes of social justice, time, and the interconnectedness of human existence. Though his work was often serious in nature, Priestley had a wicked sense of humour. Cryer will be joined by Steve Abbott, manager-turned-producer for Monty Python, and Lindsay Sutton, Chair of the J.B. Priestley Society (both born in Bradford)

Susan has written for and appeared on many radio shows including Jeremy Hardy Talks to the Nation and Stephen K. Amos´ Life: An Idiot´s Guide and is one of the Huffington Post´s funniest women tweeters and stalwart of the British comedy circuit and the Edinburgh Fringe and has performed across the world. Susan and Danny discuss the UK comedy revolution that happened in the 80s/90s, including The Comic Strip and The Young Ones. Susan shares some great stories and trivia about some of the UK`s biggest comedians. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Susan Murray runs the Red Imp comedy club in Walthamstow. Working on Spitting Image and one of the UK´s first adult animation shows was her path into comedy. Susan is the person behind the current comedian’s Christmas party. Held in January because everyone is working at Xmas. 95% of comics get their gigs from the Facebook page Susan started. It's still quite hard being a woman in comedy, but things are improving. Some rooms are terrible for comedy. Gigs in low ceiling rooms are easier, but ones with mirrors or round tables are hell. You can´t second guess a room, some of the gigs Susan thought would be dreadful e.g. A room full of stag parties were great. When Susan makes bread it always looks like John Merrick´s head. Comedians who do the Edinburgh Fringe end up losing money. BEST MOMENTS “I'm Scottish, manufactured, Black Country raised.” “Then The Young Ones burst on the screen, and it literally blew my mind.” “Barry Cryer was an anecdote machine.” “Gigs are a bit nicer than they used to be.” “Why would you heckle a deaf comic?” “I had people ringing me up going, can you never stop baking your s**t bread.” “You get to be really rude to people in the audience, they love it, and then you get paid for it…. What more could you want from life?” “Comedy is a delicate flower you can´t shove it anywhere and expect it to thrive.” EPISODE RESOURCES http://susan-murray.co.uk/up-coming-gigs http://www.redimpcomedy.com Find a gig FB page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/284118201700872 HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. In this episode, Danny Hurst is joined by Ronnie Golden, aka Tony De Meur, of the post-punk pub rock band The Fabulous Poodles. They had several hits and appeared regularly on TV and radio. The Fabulous Poodles supported many bands including The Ramones and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Later, Ronnie transitioned into stand-up, comedy, acting and song-writing. He worked with Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders and was in The Young Ones, The Fourth Protocol and more. Later, he collaborated with comedy legends such as Arthur Smith, Rich Hall and, until his death, Barry Cryer, with whom he performed regularly as a double-act. Ronnie shares some fascinating stories about his career, the people he has worked with and his influences. He also explains how he learned maths through music and how the Comedy Store and The Comic Strip Presents… changed British comedy. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite writing a lot of music Ronnie, like many other musicians, cannot read music. Ronnie learned maths through music, he explains how during the episode. Never turn down the chance to do something new. Repeatedly, Ronnie took on projects despite not having 100% of the skills required. He simply learned what he needed to know. All performers have bad days, including Bob Dylan. Ronnie shares what it was like to see Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix and more perform in small London venues. A lot of the comedy of the 80s came out of people being sick of the Tories. In the 60s, going up west and to Denmark Street was a buzz. Today, London has become so corporate that it has lost much of its character. BEST MOMENTS “From doing comedy songs, I developed repartee, and it became a mix of stand-up and music.” “I recognised the mathematics in music, and I connected with it. 12 bar blues and that kind of stuff.” “I bought myself a harmonica, and I didn't take it out of my mouth for about a week until I learned it.” “You´ve got to trust yourself.” “That´s the way Dylan works – he likes to surprise himself.” “In the 60s, it was a complete buzz.” “I see less of places that I used to love going to and everything’s changed.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://x.com/ronniegolden1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Golden HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Today, Danny is joined by Lizzy Roper, a comedian, actress, DJ, the face of Aunt Bessie´s and more. Her grandfather was a Londoner, but her father was born in Spain. When the civil war erupted, they became refugees. Lizzy was born and raised in Whetstone. Lizzy´s career has included numerous stage roles and parts in 63 movies and TV shows, including Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road. As well as a significant period doing stand up alongside Lenny Beige, Matt Lucas, Sasha Barron Cohen, David Walliams and more. She shares some interesting stories, including why she had to learn Middle English to get her equity card, a funny Pink Panther story and tales of an eclectic mix of celebrities, including Tom Baker, John Hurt, Barry Cryer, Leo Sayer and Robbie Williams. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS By the age of 5 Lizzy was already imitating entertainers she saw on TV. She was born to act. In the late 80s, early 90s, London was still affordable, even for struggling actors. London is really a series of little towns that are patched together. In the West End, wherever you look, history hits you in the face. Once you have lived outside of London for a while you forget that the city has its own behavioural norms. The Gielgud Theatre had two previous names. The Regency Rooms was known for its cabaret comedy, but a lot of big bands also played there. Acting in a soap opera requires a different skillset. The insights Lizzie shares about how they make 2.5 hours of TV in under a week are fascinating. BEST MOMENTS “If I go back up there, they tell me I sound like a Cockney t**t.” “It took me a while to get London.” “Do you remember that wonderful word “profit share” that translates to profit loss?” “My acting career took off by going through the back door of Cabaret comedy stand up.” “When I met you, you were running the asylum at the time.” “I know I can do a bit of stand-up, but I could not be a street performer.” “There´s something magical about Liverpool.” “Hollyoaks, it's more dangerous than a Mexican drug cartel.” “I haven´t got the London code anymore.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1575301 https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/lizzie-roper HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. The latest episode of the podcast which asks; has Rock Expert David Stubbs come from The Sky?After all the lovely Pop trifle we've had in recent episodes, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, it's time for some necessary roughage, as we take a tentative walk down Nineteen Eighty Six Street once more. And yes, it's stillone of the most rammel years for 20th Century Pop, but somehow we managed to find one which doesn't have the whiff of the dog's arse about it.It's only four months into '86, but our Favourite Thursday Evening Pop Treat is having another of its regular crises, this time brought on by the after effects of Michael Grade taking over at BBC1 and pissing about with the scheduling, meaning that ten whole minutes have been lopped off, and the results are not pretty; everything has been crammed in like a Japanese tube train at knocking-off time, videos have been cut off at the knees, there's a neon set better suited for a Miss Wet T-Shirt competition in Romeo & Juliet's Doncaster and the chart rundown – the whole point of the show, mark you – has been utterly defiled.Musicwise, it's better than it has any right to be. Gary Davies – a man bursting with so much sexual potency in 1986 that the sex workers of Amsterdam are pitching themselves through windows to get at him – has been given the chance to run the show solo for the first time in years, but we don't see that much of him, because there's no time. Big Country pitch up in Success Coats. Michael Hurll practically rips the wig off Falco's head and wipes his arse with it. A-Ha continue their spell as the premier teeny band and get creative with a bit of masking tape. Suzanne Vega gets judged by a poster of a German sex-colossus. And then, oh God, it's the longest examination of a single EVER on Chart Music. Janet Jackson stares her ponce of a boyfriend out. It's Immaterial look absolutely knackered and wonder why their label didn't make a video. George Michael drops the weirdest Number One of the decade, and Whitney Houston spoils everything with a huge dollop of mawk.Sarah Bee and Neil Kulkarni join Al Needham to gingerly pick through the wreckage of 1986, veering off on such tangents as Nick Ross' Drug Buffet, Neil's Gin and Vomit Shame, being mistaken for Pete Docherty's stalker, the best way to tell an interview subject that their new album stinks of unwashed cock, how the Ukraine War would have shagged up TOTP if it was still going, an appreciation of Euro-Ponces, how the BBC thought Bob Monkhouse, Barry Cryer and Nigel Havers could stop youths on dingy estates from taking heroin, and a huge Birmingham Piss Troll update. You know the swearing is going to be intense on this one…Video Playlist | Subscribe | Facebook | Twitter | The Chart Music Wiki | Patreon*** Listen to Sarah's new podcast HERE *** Hosted on Acast. And could Lou Reed have made it without Andy Warhol, John Cale or Nico? … Tracie, Bowie, Bonnie Tyler, Tracey Ullman, the JoBoxers, Kenny Everett and other top-notch components of the singles chart in April ‘83. … did A Hard Day's Night invent the word “grotty” and Steely Dan the word “scam”? … who was the mysterious “Fred Flange”? The story of the Goons, George Martin , Peter Sellers and Matt Monro.   … … and birthday guest Al Hearton remembers records you'd heard about before you heard them – eg Don't Fear the Reaper, Bat Out Of Hell, Mother's Little Helper, Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite and Eve Of Destruction.Tickets for Word In The Park in London on June 3rd here!: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-happy-return-of-word-in-the-park-tickets-576193870377Subscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon for early and ad-free access to all of our content!: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Ronnie Golden is a musician, composer, and stand up comedian. Ronnie started as a teenage guitarist, opening shows for Tom Jones, Scott Walker and Engelbert Humperdinck. He worked with David Bowie in his Beckenham Arts Lab days then went on to form the cult new wave group, Fabulous Poodles who outsold both The Clash and The Jam in America in the early 80's. After that he was doing stand-up as a member of the Comic Strip with regulars Rik Mayall, Ben Elton, French and Saunders and Alexei Sayle. He was in the first series of BBC 2's The Young Ones as Buddy Holly, hanging from the ceiling in his parachute. His voice was regularly heard on Spitting Image as Roger Daltry, Mick Jagger and many more. His comedy double act with his friend Barry Cryer yielded several successful Edinburgh shows and a live cd, Rock ‘N' Droll. They regularly performed their 2 hour show in theatres across the UK right up to Barry's death in 2022.Ronnie Golden is guest number 257 on My Time Capsule and chats to Michael Fenton Stevens about the five things he'd like to put in a time capsule; four he'd like to preserve and one he'd like to bury and never have to think about again .Ronnie's song Too Much Juice sung by Chaka Khan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9oD6C4J1voRonnie's former band Fabulous Poodles - https://open.spotify.com/artist/565xMlSzNCYpRH0kbulq3A?si=q4rxss39T0WDjHYSUpfD4AFollow Ronnie Golden on Twitter: @RonnieGolden1 .Follow My Time Capsule on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook: @MyTCpod .Follow Michael Fenton Stevens on Twitter: @fentonstevens & Instagram @mikefentonstevens .Produced and edited by John Fenton-Stevens for Cast Off Productions .Music by Pass The Peas Music .Artwork by matthewboxall.com .This podcast is proud to be associated with the charity Viva! The award-winning master of spoken word audio, this week's guest is the endlessly entertaining Dirk Maggs. Dirk has been overseeing the production of The Sandman: Act III, the latest in a long line of collaborations with Neil Gaiman. He was first introduced to Neil via a mutual friend at DC Comics, as Dirk had been involved in audio productions of The Adventures of Superman, Batman: The Lazarus Syndrome and other projects and it was also due to the DC connection that Dirk met Douglas Adams and so began the protracted process of bringing The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy 'back home to BBC Radio' as Adams put it. Dirk has also produced adaptations of Agatha Christie, Stephen King and Arthur C Clarke works. But it is for his work in comedy that we are focusing on this week - Dirk devised and produced At Last The Go On Show in 1991 to mark the 40th anniversary of The Goon Show; he later was the brains behind Goon Again in 2001, a special one-off restaging of The Goon Show starring Jeffrey Holland, Andrew Secombe, Jon Glover and Christopher Timothy ('a genetically-engineered tribute band' was how he described it). We also talk about his early break in BBC Radio comedy producing The News Huddlines and shows such as The Long Hot Satsuma starring Graeme Garden and Barry Cryer, and later programmes like Inside Sasha and Flywheel, Shyster & Flywheel which introduced The Marx Brothers to new generations. It's a terrific conversation about a wide-ranging and never-dull career. More on Dirk here: www.dirkmaggs.com

On Saturday morning I watched, as usual, Newswatch which gives viewers the opportunity to criticise the BBC news broadcasts....this week the viewers launched into the total waste of airtime given to the Government's Christmas parties.....and the biassed reporting by the Beeb......needless to say there was no-one to comment live from the news section but as usual they wrote a comment saying they feel they have got it right....in the many years I have been watching television I have never seen it so bad....The BBC should print their news on a piece of paper which you could nail up in an outside toilet where it belongs. Golf at St.Andrews wont be the same anymore as they have severed their connection with the golfer formerly known as Prince.....so the Banned old Duke of York will no longer be including many rounds of golf amongst his royal duties ....oh how one's life can change in such a short time......so now he's not a golfer...he's a naughty boy.........normal golf clubs are generally littered with pompous arrogant toffee nosed members so I dread to think what the St.Andrews committee are like. We have recently lost a great comedy writer...Barry Cryer....he wrote some fabulous comedy for many comedians when comedy was actually funny...before humourless brigade who have no imagination decided to be deeply offended by any thing that was funny.....probably because they knew their faces would split in half if they ever smiled When it comes to making comedy films there are certain geniuses who need a mention.....firstly we have Mel Brooks and his brilliant Blazing Saddles which cleverly pokes fun at the ignorance of racist idiots with the black sheriff....then we have The Producers which poked fun at The Nazis which a lot of people missed the point of.....but to me the classic of all time was Monty Python's Life of Brian which was genius.....the Americans totally missed the point calling it anti religious where in fact it simply illustrated the sheer stupidity of the human race who always need someone to follow....a classic film....and I enjoyed the historic interview after the film was made with John Cleese and the arrogant upper class twit Malcolm Muggeridge who showed what a total prat he was The record I would like to discuss this week is the Elvis classic...Jailhouse Rock......the record still holds up today.and considering there are only 4 musicians backing Elvis it makes this a masterpiece......the temptation to write this song in a country style must have been hard to resist but whoever came up with the the guitar work and the drum breaks makes this, for me,one of the best rock and roll records ever.and also lyrically brilliant.

Comedy writer, novelist and Goon Show fan David Quantick is Tyler's guest this week. With Spike Milligan being one of David's earliest influences as a writer he was keen to explain how, for him, the Goons had more of an impact than the Pythons and helped sharpen his comic sensibilities, along with the likes of absurdist playwright NF Simpson. As well as general Goon chat there are conversational meanderings such as: Meeting Spike on Saturday Zoo; the brilliance of Barry Cryer; bringing back Dangermouse; Chris Morris on ‘aardvark comedy'; John Cleese; The Beatles (for a change); David freaking out his mother with his first typewritten script; Sabrina in Stoke Newington and noddin' along to Val Doonican on Pam & Tony's old Dansette record player.
