The home of Scottish football banter
John, Krys and guest Alan are on the latest episode as we try to gee ourselves up ahead of the upcoming friendlies. After an intro that could have been gold we start with the goalkeeper situation. Safe to say as always this seems a real area of concern with so few options.Things maybe get slightly more optimistic as we progress further up the pitch. There have been plenty of guys in the squad who have been really successful. Can we find the right combination? Will one or more of the uncapped players take their chance? We finish off by discussing what we'd like to take in terms of positives from these games.Next week we will return with a chat about our experiences at Euro 2024 as it approaches a year since the tournament started. Thanks as always for listening!Bluesky - @sffpodcast.bsky.socialTwitter/X - @sffpodcastInstagram - sffpodcastTikTok - @sffpodcastFacebook - Scottish Football ForumsMastodon - @sffpodcast@mastodon.scotEmail - scottishfootballforumspodcast@gmail.com
It's a podcast of two halves in this month's focus on all things women's football. We start off with Dave being joined by Charlie and Casey, before switching to Dave's chat with Eva Murray (which you may notice was recorded first!)Obviously the main focus is on the league success for Hibernian. There were of course other runners in the race, some more than others, and particularly the disappointment of outgoing champions Celtic finishing in fourth.Although Rangers missed out on the title on the final day, they did finish the season with a cup double, culminating in their Scottish Cup final victory on Sunday. That meant Glasgow City are once again trophyless, albeit they will have Champions League qualifying next season for finishing runners up in the league. At the other end of the table, it was Spartans who joined Queen's Park and Dundee United in being relegated to SWPL2 with Montrose confirming their top flight status on the final day as results went their way. Finally there's everyone's pick for team of the season, as well as a look ahead to the final two Nations League matches and a fond farewell to our retiring captain, Rachel Corsie. Thanks as always for listening!Bluesky - @sffpodcast.bsky.socialTwitter/X - @sffpodcastInstagram - sffpodcastTikTok - @sffpodcastFacebook - Scottish Football ForumsMastodon - @sffpodcast@mastodon.scotEmail - scottishfootballforumspodcast@gmail.com

It's six days until Celtic and Aberdeen meet in the Scottish Cup Final, and John B speaks to a former player from each side to take a trip down memory lane by recalling their respective past glories as well as looking ahead to this years showpiece.First up is Aberdeen's Brian Irvine looking back at The Dons last Scottish Cup success in 1990. Brian talks about the run to Hampden and how Alex Smith told him in advance of the Final that he'd retain his place ahead of the returning Willie Miller. Brian would then fulfil a boyhood dream by winning the Cup after a marathon penalty shootout victory, with his spot kick sealing a 9-8 success.Next up is Celtic cult hero Peter Grant. Having missed wins in '85 and '88 through injury, it would be third time lucky for Peter by picking up a winner's medal in 1989 thanks to a 1-0 win over Rangers. However, he talks more in depth about the 1995 Final against Airdrie where he overcame a late injury scare to put in a man of the match performance as the Hoops secured their first trophy in six years (yes young Celtic fans, that really did happen). Having been through those dark times, Peter is quick to remind Celtic fans to enjoy the current success whilst it's here.Copyright - audio from the 1990 and 1995 Scottish Cup Finals are courtesy of the Scottish FA, STV and BBC Scotland. Thanks as always for listening!Tweet us @sffpodcastInstagram - sffpodcastFacebook - Scottish Football ForumsMastodon - @sffpodcast@mastodon.scotBluesky - @sffpodcast.bsky.socialEmail - scottishfootballforumspodcast@gmail.com

Five years since league reconstruction was last briefly discussed by the SPFL, and promptly batted away into the night sky, Improving Scottish Football Podcast host Kieran Hennigan revisited the topic with a one minute video promoting a 14 team Premiership idea. The video went viral with over 800,000 views on Twitter/X alone.John B invited Kieran onto discuss the pros and cons of a 14 team Scottish Premiership and why he thinks this is the way forward, and not just in the top flight either. There is a good honest discussion about the effects of a promotion/relegation structure, how the 14 team structure works in Greece, would a more even split work better than a top six/bottom eight and also how the setup would improve youth development. Kieran also discusses his plans to evolve his podcast that he hopes one day will see those at the top embrace change, with league reconstruction just one of many areas in Scottish Football that needs addressing. Thanks as always for listening!Tweet us @sffpodcastInstagram - sffpodcastFacebook - Scottish Football ForumsMastodon - @sffpodcast@mastodon.scotBluesky - @sffpodcast.bsky.socialEmail - scottishfootballforumspodcast@gmail.com

Following two defeats for SWNT in the Women's Nations League, Dave is joined by John Bl to pick over how the games against Austria and Netherlands went for Scotland. With Emma Lawton coming in and getting the opening goal of against the Dutch, they consider if she's now a mainstay, as well as wondering if Michael McArdle will still be the interim coach when the next set of fixtures come around in April. Longer term, there's questions as to where the next manager will come from and if that might be further afield than Scotland once more.Of course, after two defeats, there's questions around the possible defensive frailties that led to the goals, especially in two narrow defeats in what could be a tight Nations League group.Looking forward, the SWPL moves into its post-split phase and with four teams level on 51 points it's an exciting final ten games ahead in terms of the title! Thanks as always for listening!Tweet us @sffpodcastInstagram - sffpodcastFacebook - Scottish Football ForumsMastodon - @sffpodcast@mastodon.scotBluesky - @sffpodcast.bsky.socialEmail - scottishfootballforumspodcast@gmail.com

First up is a look at SWPL1 and how the title race is hotting up with just two points separating the top four and six points separating the top five. In the first women's football podcast of the new year, Dave is joined by returning guests Casey and Grant to discuss what's been happening in the SWPL lately. With Glasgow City currently in the driving seat at the top of the league, they discuss what that might mean for the title challenge. Has the Rangers title challenge faltered due to a lack in midfield? Will Celtic, free from the distraction of Europe, have a stronger second half to the season? Will Hearts and Hibernian continue to keep it interesting at the top and make it a five team title race? Further down the league table there's a lot to discuss as well from who'll make the top six to who the relegation candidates are, particularly that third from bottom spot which is currently only separated by goal difference between Montrose and Aberdeen. They also discuss who the stand out players have been so far this season, what the BBC Scotland TV deal might mean for the SWPL, and have a preview of the weekend's action - assuming the weather permits it! Turning briefly to the national team, they are of course currently managerless with the departure of Pedro Martinez Losa. It's a podcast of two halves ahead of Scotland's crucial Euro 2025 qualifying playoff final tie against Finland and a huge chance to make a return to a major tournament. In the first half, Dave is joined by Casey Atkin. They reflect on just how big this tie is for SWNT as a whole but also Pedro Martinez Losa, particularly with an emphasis on the importance of the home leg first at Easter Road on Friday. They give their team predictions, and have a bit of fun with a cap quiz too. In the second half, John is joined by SWNT royalty. The all time top goalscorer with a staggering 116 goals in 121 appearances, Julie Fleeting. They look back over how the campaign has gone so far, through the Nations League B campaign and the semi final against Hungary, even picking up the results with the influence of captain Rachel Corsie. They look at the gradual progression the team have been making, and how that along with the return of Chelsea Cornet might just help us take some revenge against a Finland side who have been a problem for us in the past. Good luck to Scotland in this tie, and hopefully it's onwards to Switzerland next year! Regulars John, Charlie and Jeff are joined by Hearts fan Graeme as domestic football returns. To kick off the show, Jeff leads on the precarious situation at Dumbarton with them going in to administration. This leads on to Graeme giving us an insight in to what it was like when Hearts went in to administration in 2013. Dundee United's good away from continued at Ibrox as Rangers struggled once again. The rumours surfaced again that Clement had left but as of now he's still manager of the club. We discuss some of the issues at Rangers which seems to be a regular occurrence. John B is taking a little break so he has handed over the podcast reigns to Josh once more. Joining him to look back at Scotland's visit to Croatia ahead of hosting Portugal are regulars Charlie, Dave and Krys as well as Andy of DUFC Stats fame. The guys reflect on yet another defeat for the national side, meaning it's now just one win in fifteen matches, although they try to put some context around that. Looking across the squad, they try to anticipate/hope what the team might be for the Portugal match and look for some of the positives that might have come from all the injuries. Mostly they start with "B" and end in "en Doak". There's the inevitable discussion around what could/should happen if/when Steve Clarke's time is up, with a couple of left field suggestions for who might come in to replace him - be it after the Nations League campaign or after World Cup qualifying (and preferably the World Cup itself). There's also a bit of fun at the end as we try to imagine who might be a good Scottish Football campmate in the jungle.
