This story was written by Megan Westberg for the September-October 2024 issue of Strings magazine and is read by the author.I get the sense that violinist Ray Chen is still searching for the right answer—the perfect, succinct media-ready response—to a particular question. Funny thing is, it isn't a question I've asked him. In fact, outside the introductory pleasantries, I haven't asked him anything at all. He's calling from the airport in Chicago as he waits for a connecting flight to Los Angeles (delayed) and has thus far wryly chuckled at my suggestion that he may be headed for a break after his recent stint as guest artist at Interlochen Arts Camp (not so much—but he did get a fleeting “pocket of time” to leap into a Michigan lake post-concert the night before). Before I launch into a litany of questions about his upcoming release, Player 1; his practice platform, Tonic; and the general comings and goings of the artist known as Ray Chen, he thinks it may be worth mentioning why it is he routinely ventures outside the box, as it were, in terms of the activities that typically occupy a concert violinist. So he poses the first question himself.Support the show

This Day in Legal History: The Incorporation of the City of New AmsterdamOn this day in legal history, February 2nd marks a significant moment with the incorporation of the City of New Amsterdam in 1653 by the Dutch Republic. This historic event laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most influential cities in the world. Situated on the southern tip of Manhattan Island, New Amsterdam served as a pivotal trading and administrative center of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. Its strategic location played a crucial role in the burgeoning trade network between the New World and Europe. However, the city's Dutch identity was not to last. In 1664, following the British conquest, New Amsterdam underwent a profound transformation, symbolized by its renaming to New York in honor of the Duke of York. This change marked a significant shift not just in governance but in the cultural and legal fabric of the city. The British takeover introduced English legal practices and administrative structures, which would influence the development of New York and, by extension, the emerging United States.Today, as we reflect on the incorporation of New Amsterdam, we recognize it as a moment of convergence between Dutch and English legal traditions that would shape the character of New York City. The legacy of this transformation is still evident in the city's diverse cultural tapestry, its role as a global economic powerhouse, and its legal system, which continues to influence international law and commerce. The story of New Amsterdam's incorporation and its subsequent renaming to New York serves as a reminder of the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of legal and urban history.Proskauer, a prominent Big Law firm, has successfully reached a confidential settlement with its former chief operating officer, Jonathan O'Brien, concluding a legal battle over allegations of trade secret theft. This dispute centered on O'Brien's accused misappropriation of sensitive electronic files detailing the firm's finances, business strategies, and billing rates. Proskauer initiated the lawsuit following O'Brien's sudden resignation in December 2022, amid claims he intended to utilize these files for a prospective position at competing firm Paul Hastings—a move that ultimately did not transpire. O'Brien has contested these accusations, arguing his actions were merely to facilitate work related to his departure while on vacation in a remote location. The settlement, detailed in a court submission, seeks a permanent injunction preventing O'Brien from retaining or employing the disputed confidential materials. Despite the resolution, representatives for both parties have yet to publicly comment on the matter. Before this legal fray, O'Brien, a UK national non-lawyer, had contributed five years of service as Proskauer's COO.Proskauer Reaches Settlement with Ex-COO in Trade Secrets RowThe verdict in the $370 million civil fraud case against former U.S. President Donald Trump, overseen by Justice Arthur Engoron, is now expected to be delivered in early to mid-February, following a three-month trial last year. Initially, Justice Engoron aimed to conclude by the end of January, but this timeline has been extended. The lawsuit, filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, accuses Trump and his family businesses of inflating his net worth by up to $3.6 billion annually over ten years to obtain favorable loan conditions. Trump has rebutted these claims, denouncing the lawsuit as a politically motivated attack by James, a Democrat. If found liable, Trump could face significant consequences, including monetary penalties and a permanent ban from the New York real estate sector, significantly impacting his business operations within the state. This legal battle unfolds as Trump campaigns for the Republican nomination to run against President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. Engoron had previously determined in September that Trump committed fraud, leading to an order to partially dissolve his business empire, a decision Trump is appealing. The final arguments were made on January 11, with Trump criticizing Engoron directly in court for alleged bias, prompting a call for decorum from the judge.Trump civil fraud verdict now expected by mid-February | ReutersActivist investors at Tesla are poised to leverage a recent Delaware court ruling against CEO Elon Musk's $56 billion stock compensation package to push for corporate governance reforms. The court's decision, which criticized Tesla's board for its deference to Musk, has emboldened these investors, who have struggled in the past to secure significant changes at shareholder meetings. They argue that the ruling could sway major index funds and investors to support their resolutions, such as altering the voting threshold for corporate changes to a simple majority. Tesla has not yet scheduled its annual shareholder meeting, typically held in May, where only a few directors, including Musk's brother Kimbal and James Murdoch, are up for re-election. Both directors previously faced opposition from proxy advisers over concerns related to executive compensation, and activist investors expect advisory firms like ISS and Glass Lewis to bolster their case against Tesla's board this year. Additionally, a new shareholder resolution proposes annual re-elections for all directors, challenging the current staggered board system. With Musk holding a significant voting stake, critics will need support from major mutual fund holders to effect change. The Delaware judge's scathing review of the board's negotiation process for Musk's compensation plan may also prompt Tesla's top investors to reconsider their stance on governance issues.Tesla activist investors to seize on Elon Musk pay ruling | ReutersTexas Supreme Court Justice John Devine has been notably absent from more than half of the court's oral arguments since the current term began in September, opting instead to campaign for re-election. Despite the critical nature of the cases being heard, including those concerning Texas' abortion ban and laws regarding medical treatment for transgender children, Devine has missed 28 of the 50 argued cases. His absence from these proceedings, while not violating the state's elections code, has sparked debate about his ability to fulfill his judicial responsibilities. Devine, who is running for a third term and faces a primary challenge, defends his campaign activities as part of his duties, asserting that he remains informed by reviewing case briefs and watching archived video of the proceedings he misses. However, this approach prevents him from directly questioning lawyers during arguments, potentially impacting his grasp of complex legal issues. Critics, including his primary opponent Justice Brian Walker, argue that Devine's priorities may not align with the judicial code of conduct, which emphasizes the precedence of judicial duties over other activities. Despite the controversy, Devine's campaign has been financially successful, raising significant funds and outpacing his opponent in the lead-up to the primary. This situation underscores the tension between the demands of electoral politics and the expectations of judicial office, highlighting the unique challenges faced by elected judges in balancing these roles.Justice Misses Half of Texas Supreme Court Arguments to CampaignThis week's closing music features the vibrant Allegro from Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, a masterpiece that has captivated audiences and performers alike with its lyrical beauty and innovative structure. It was Mendelssohn's final concerto before his untimely death due to illness at the age of 38. Born on February 3, 1809, in Hamburg, Germany, Mendelssohn was a musical prodigy who made significant contributions to the Romantic era, both as a composer and conductor. This weekend marks the anniversary of his birth, and if he were alive today, Mendelssohn would be celebrating his 215th birthday. His Violin Concerto, premiered in 1845, stands as one of the most important and beloved works in the violin repertoire, admired for its emotional depth and technical brilliance. Mendelssohn's ability to blend classical forms with the expressive power of the Romantic era is exemplified in this concerto, particularly in the seamless flow from the first movement into the second, a departure from traditional concerto form that was innovative at the time. This recording, a testament to Mendelssohn's enduring legacy, is made available through the generosity of the University of Chicago Orchestra and under a Creative Commons license, allowing us to appreciate and share the genius of Mendelssohn's compositions. As we listen to the Allegro from his Violin Concerto, we highlight not only Mendelssohn's contribution to music but also the spirit of innovation and expression that defines the Romantic era. If you're looking for more Mendelssohn, and who among us is not, I highly recommend the performance by Ray Chen, available on YouTube and linked in the shownotes.  Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Inspired by a favorite lyric from the song, the video finds Valerie floating through the galaxy alone gazing down at the world below her. “The Goo Goo Dolls music video for ‘Iris' is the first I ever truly fell in love with,” Valerie shared. “When making my own video, I wanted to give an homage to theirs. In the original, Johnny is locked away in a tower, looking down upon the city below with various telescopes. I always felt like the concept made the lyrics, especially the line ‘and I don't want the world to see me,' hit home. In my video, I used the same idea, only I'm looking down on the world from a space station.”“Iris” is the first official single off Valerie's forthcoming debut EP Voyager due out this fall. It also marks the second time she's crossed paths with The Goo Goo Dolls after singing on “Money, Fame & Fortune” off their latest album Miracle Pill.  Stay tuned for more news from Valerie soon.  About Valerie Broussard: You can feel Valerie Broussard's dynamic vocals and emotionally charged songwriting in massive smash collaborations, through hundreds of film, television, and video game placements, projected from some of the biggest stages in the world, and within her solo output. Garnering just north of half a billion total streams, her voice and pen power Kygo's “Think About You” and “The Truth” as well as the 2019  League of Legends  theme “Awaken” with Ray Chen. We had the pleasure of interviewing Valerie Broussard over Zoom video! Platinum-certified singer, songwriter and powerhouse vocalist Valerie Broussard has today released “Iris,” a breathtaking rendition of The Goo Goo Dolls classic broken down to stark piano and strings. “Iris” is the first official single off Valerie's forthcoming debut EP Voyager due out this fall. It also marks the second time she's crossed paths with The Goo Goo Dolls after singing on “Money, Fame & Fortune” off their latest album Miracle Pill. “‘Iris' is one of my favorite songs of all time and the first music video I remember falling in love with,” said Valerie. “During the pandemic, I felt myself gravitating towards nostalgic songs like this for comfort and decided I really wanted to cover it. It's still incredibly relevant and a perfect example of just how timeless Johnny Rzeznik's songwriting is.” Valerie's dynamic vocals and emotionally charged songwriting can also be heard in massive smash collaborations such as Kygo's “Think About You” and “The Truth” as well as hundreds of film, television and video game placements including the 2019 League of Legends theme “Awaken” with Ray Chen and programming on NETFLIX, The CW, ABC, Prime Video, SyFy, HBO and more. Most recently, Valerie collaborated with ILLENIUM and Nurko on the track “Sideways,” which she wrote as an ode to a friend who was struggling with mental health during the pandemic. It debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance / Electronic Songs chart and has been streamed more than 11 million times. It's also taken up prime real estate on coveted playlists across all DSPs including Apple Music's A-List Pop and Dance Risers, Spotify'sMint and Pop Rising and Amazon Music's Hot Singles and Pop Culture as well as received radio support from iHeart Evolution, KNHC Seattle, SiriusXM BPM and MCDE/Music Choice. "When I hear Beethoven, I feel like he's reading my mind, reading my soul. It's impossible to comprehend. I compare Beethoven to someone like Da Vinci. Similar level of genius. His music is one of the great treasures we have." On today's program, cellist Pablo Ferrández is here. A colleague of Daniel on stage and a friend offstage, they have a lot talk about when it comes to cello, music, and music's role in modern life. But this is not a conversation where two musicians talk shop. Quite to the contrary-- it's a conversation with appeal to the general public, to even the most casual of listeners or someone with just a passing interest in music. Great music shapes us, it colors every aspect of our lives, it makes itself relevant and indispensable just by virtue of it existing. So where do we turn in these pandemic times when we need music the most? What do musicians do? Why does Beethoven mean so much, so long after his death? Is "relevance" an escape word-- a myth?-- people use when they don't want to fully confront a great work of art? Prizewinner at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition and SONY Classical exclusive artist, Pablo Ferrández announces himself as a musician of stature. A captivating performer, “Ferrández has the lot: technique, mettle, spirit, authority as a soloist, expressivity and charm” (El Pais). Recent highlights include the debuts at the Hollywood Bowl with Los Angeles Philharmonic under G.Dudamel, with Bayersichen Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra under D. Gatti, with Bamberg Symphony under C. Eschenbach, performances of Brahms Double Concerto and Beethoven Triple Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter, and appearances with the London Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, and Orchestre National de France, among others. The 20/21 season will bring the debuts with Filarmonica della Scala under R. Chailly, Mahler Chamber Orchestra under D. Gatti, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony, RTE National Symphony Orchestra, Festival Strings Luzern, Orchestra de la Svizzera Italiana, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra and returns with the Dusseldorf Symphony at the Elbphilharmonie, Orchestra Sinfonica Nationale RAI, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Spanish National Orchestra, RTVE Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de les Illes Balears and the Basque National Orchestra. He will also be Artist-in-residence at the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. As a recitalist and chamber musician, he frequently collaborates with such artists as Vadim Repin, Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, Yuja Wang, Nikolay Lugansky, Khatia Buniatishvili, Beatrice Rana, Denis Kozhukhin, Maxim Rysanov, Ray Chen, Alice Sara Ott, Elena Bashkirova, Luis del Valle and Sara Ferrández. Born in Madrid in 1991, in a family of musicians, Pablo Ferrández joined the prestigious Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía when he was 13 to study with Natalia Shakhovskaya. After that he completed his studies at the Kronberg Academy with Frans Helmerson and became scholar of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation. Mr. Ferrández plays the Stradivarius “Lord Aylesford” (1696) thanks to the Nippon Music Foundation. ----------------- talkingbeats.com Please consider supporting Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk via our Patreon: patreon.com/talkingbeats In addition to early episode access, bonus episodes, and other benefits, you will contribute to us being able to present the highest quality substantive, long-form interviews with the world's most compelling people. "When people feel safe enough to come back to the concert hall I do think we will see a resurgence in classical music." On this episode, noted concert violinist Ray Chen discusses the fascinating, wild times of being a musician during the COVID-19 pandemic. He and Daniel address questions large and small, comfortable and less so. What IS the place of a symphony orchestra right now? What has the classical music world gotten right--and wrong--over the years? How does a musician keep busy when there are few if any concerts? Of course, we also hear what Ray is listening to-- it might surprise you. Violinist Ray Chen has won a number of international awards and performs as soloist with orchestras all over the world. He is known for his combination of emotion and vitality, whether he is performing in Chicago or Shanghai. He is also passionate about the education of younger generations, reaching out to young classical musicians through his social media channels and fostering online musical communities where music students feel safe, empowered, and motivated.

Being in a quartet is like being in a marriage, says Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, violist and founding member of the world renowned award-winning Dover Quartet & our guest for Episode 5 of the So This Is My Why Podcast. Holding dual citizenship in the US and the Netherlands, Milena considers herself to have grown up “a little bit of everywhere” including in Oxford (UK), Baltimore and Jacksonville. Her father taught her the piano before, feeling fed up with the instrument, she chose the violin as her next musical endeavour. An instrument she picked up after hearing a musician busk on the streets of Oxford. At the age of 10 years old, having moved back to Jacksonville by then, she picked up the trombone and also (eagerly!) volunteered to play the viola when her younger brother wanted to form a quartet. We explore all that including a pivotal moment in the summer of 2005, where she met and learned from Michael Klotz, violist of Amernet Quartet & her first viola teacher, at the Bowdoin International Music Festival. A meeting that resulted in her “ sudden immersion in the viola world ”. *Curtis Institute of Music* We also discuss the considerations she had in place when applying for music schools and how she dropped all other applications the moment she got into her dream school - the Curtis Institute of Music! There, she studied with the likes of Michael Tree (of the Guarneri Quartet) & Roberto Diaz (President & CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music). It was also at Curtis that the members of what would be the Dover Quartet came together - not unlike the tentative start of a budding relationship! They bonded so well, one of their teachers, Shmuel Ashkenasi (Vermeer Quartet) asked them, “Have you considered getting married (to each other)?” because you're always together. To which Milena said: We could not have been more giddy than when he said that to us because we had looked up to him so much and he notoriously is one of the most demanding coaches we've ever had. And so to get that kind of encouragement from someone we looked up to… I think that definitely had a huge thing to do with our morale and decision to be kind of brave enough to commit to one another. From there, they decided to show “commitment” to each other by attending the graduate residency program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music as a quartet. *Realities of Life As a String Quartet Member* The life of a string quartet member is so very unique & some of the things we explore include: * What is your schedule like as a string quartet? How often are you on the road? * What was it like participating in competitions (e.g. Fischoff Competition) and in particular, your memories of those incredible wins at the Banff Competition 2013 which launched the Dover Quartet into the spotlight? * Importance of competitions to the careers of string quartets * Ways of dealing with disagreements between quartet members, particularly in musical interpretations of pieces * Managing personal space while on the road; * Staying in touch with loved ones while on the road * Collaborations with other musicians & how that comes about * Giving live performances versus making studio recordings; * The role of social media & the power of collaborations - e.g. with Avi Avital, Edgar Meyer, Ray Chen, Roomful of Teeth & the Brooklyn Duo; * The Importance of public speaking as a means of connecting with the audience; * Dealing with concert reviews * Giving back to the community through Music For Food ( https://musicforfood.net/index.php/artist/dover-quartet/ ) ; and * “Balancing” a solo career with being in a quartet. *String Instruments* As the instrument itself is so important to a musician, we talk about: * The two violas she plays on & their different purposes * Modern v old instruments - which is better? Does it even matter? * How do you choose your violin? * Are violins with an unknown maker a good investment? * Impact of COVID-19 on her personal life & the life of the Dover Quartet *Role of Parents in a Child's Education* For parents with young kids or those thinking of pursuing music, we also deal with questions on: * Should all children be exposed to music / have music lessons? * How should parents handle children who don't want to practice, especially if they want to just quit after trying it for a short while? * At what age should a child learn a musical instrument? * What should people looking to pursue music think about & do? *Show notes:* https://www.sothisismywhy.com/5/ ** *Official Bio of the Dover Quartet* The phenomenal Dover Quartet catapulted to international stardom following a stunning sweep of the 2013 Banff Competition, at which they won every prize. Named the Cleveland Quartet Award-winner, and honored with the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Dover has become one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world. The Quartet's rise from up-and-coming young ensemble to occupying a spot at the top of their field has been “practically meteoric” ( Strings ). With its burnished warmth, incisive rhythms, and natural phrasing, the Quartet's distinctive sound has helped confirm its status as “the young American string quartet of the moment” ( New Yorker ). The Quartet serves as the quartet-in-residence for the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, Chamber Music Northwest, Artosphere, the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival, and Peoples' Symphony in New York, and was recently named the first-ever quartet-in-residence for the Kennedy Center. In 2018-19 the Dover Quartet performs more than a hundred concerts around North America, including performances at the Kennedy Center, San Francisco Performances, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Spivey Hall, Boston's Celebrity Series, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, and Carnegie Hall. In addition, the Dover's season features tours of Hong Kong, Europe, and Australia, collaborations with Emanuel Ax, Inon Barnatan, Peter Serkin, Anthony McGill, and Roomful of Teeth, and premieres of new works by Caroline Shaw and Matan Porat. The Quartet was thrilled to be invited by the maverick filmmaker and cultural icon David Lynch to be featured at his Los Angeles Festival of Disruption. Cedille Records released the Quartet's sophomore album, entitled Voices of Defiance: 1943, 1944, 1945 in October 2017. The recording takes listeners on a powerful journey through works written during World War II by Viktor Ullmann, Dimitri Shostakovich, and Simon Laks. The 2016-17 season saw the release of its all-Mozart debut recording on the Cedille label, a nod to the 1965 debut album of the Guarneri Quartet, whose founding violist, the late Michael Tree, joined the Dover Quartet on the recording. In addition, the group has participated in three complete Beethoven quartet cycles, including the University at Buffalo's famous “Slee Cycle” – which has presented annual Beethoven quartet cycles since 1955 and has featured the likes of the Budapest, Guarneri, and Cleveland Quartets – and will record the cycle over the next three seasons. The group's world-class collaborators have included pianists Anne-Marie McDermott, Emanuel Ax, Marc-André Hamelin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Peter Serkin, and Jon Kimura Parker; violists Roberto Díaz and Cynthia Phelps; bassist Edgar Meyer; and the Pacifica and Escher Quartets. In the spring of 2016, the Dover Quartet was recognized with the Hunt Family Award, one of the inaugural Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Awards, and in past years has taken top prizes at the Fischoff Competition and the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. All four Quartet members are consummate solo artists: first violinist Joel Link took first prize at the Menuhin Competition; violinist Bryan Lee and violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt have appeared as soloists with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Tokyo Philharmonic, respectively; and cellist Camden Shaw released a solo album debut on the Unipheye Music label. As Strad observes, “With their exceptional interpretative maturity, tonal refinement, and taut ensemble,” the Dover Quartet is “pulling away from their peers.” Hailed as “the next Guarneri Quartet” ( Chicago Tribune ), the Dover Quartet draws from the lineage of that distinguished ensemble, as well that of the Cleveland and Vermeer Quartets; its members studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, where they were mentored extensively by Shmuel Ashkenasi, James Dunham, Norman Fischer, Kenneth Goldsmith, Joseph Silverstein, Arnold Steinhardt, Michael Tree, and Peter Wiley. It was at Curtis that the Quartet first formed, and its name pays tribute to Dover Beach by fellow Curtis alumnus Samuel Barber. The group has since returned for residencies to Rice in 2011-13, and to Curtis, where it became the conservatory's first Quartet-in-Residence, in 2013-14. In addition, in 2015 the Dover was appointed the first Resident Ensemble of Peoples' Symphony Concerts in the 116-year history of New York City's oldest concert series. The Dover Quartet is dedicated to sharing its music with under-served communities and is actively involved with Music for Food, an initiative enabling musicians to raise resources and awareness in the fight against hunger. The Dover Quartet plays on the following instruments: *Joel Link* : Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, Paris circa 1857, on loan by Desirée Ruhstrat *Bryan Lee* : Riccardo Antoniazzi, Milan 1904 *Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt* : Michele Deconet, Venice, 1780, the ‘Kroyt,' generously on loan from the grandson of Boris Kroyt of the Budapest Quartet *Camden Shaw:* Frank Ravatin, France, 2010

Ms. Faidley currently employs fourteen violin and musicianship faculty members as part of her school, The Elizabeth Faidley Studio.  All students of any faculty member have access to recitals, masterclasses, private camps, and other performance opportunities.  Ms. Faidley works directly with each teacher in weekly consultations to ensure a balanced musical education for each student. Ms. Faidley also shares her passion for teaching through her writing. She has completed work on the second edition of a book for children titled “Pre-Twinkling to the Stars: Your Joyful Journey Begins” which focuses on a strong technical foundation for beginning violinists. Her second book, a beginning theory workbook for beginning and intermediate violinists, is also available. She has also published several essays in the American Suzuki Journal and is currently writing a third book on the art of pedagogy entitled, “What Happened to the Nurture?”  The book reflects her teaching philosophy, which seeks to empower the entire, unique person as the foundation of the musician. She generously makes time to mentor her students through auditions, competitions, and performances and stays in touch with them between and beyond studio lessons. Virtuoso Ray Chen hardly needs an introduction, but let's start with his Gold Medal at the Queen Elisabeth competition in 2009, at the age of 20! His career since then, by all appearances, has been an effortless climb. But as you're about to hear, that isn't the whole story. As I've gotten to know Ray (during his solo appearances with the LA Phil, including that one time he stole my bow for a Paganini encore!) I've been impressed with how open he is in person and on social media. Let's start here: if you don't follow Ray on Instagram and YouTube, you're missing out big time! Here are those links: Ray's Instagram Ray on YouTube For example, one of Ray's videos deals with the topic of insecurity. It's so rare for a world-class soloist to open up about this topic, and you certainly won't hear any insecurity in his playing! But as we discuss in this episode, it's a feeling every violinist deals with at some point, and it's a necessary step along the way to mature artistry. Ray Chen's biography Ray Chen is a violinist who redefines what it is to be a classical musician in the 21st Century. Violinist Ray Chen talks to Suzy Klein ahead of his concert with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall this week. Ray talks about his early competition wins, his love of fashion, and why performing is not just about the music but also the audience.

The Concert - Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Works for solo violin and string quartet performed by violinist Ray Chen and the Borromeo String Quartet.Bach: Chaconne from Partita in D minor Bartók: String Quartet No. 2 in A minorMusic is an art of variation. From the cantus firmus masses of medieval Europe to the 12-bar-blues of early 20th century America, the art of the varying and building upon a set theme has a long history. Bach’s famous Chaconne from the D minor partita is regarded as the apotheosis of the genre—a four-bar ground bass, repeated some 64 times with incredibly rich variation. In Bartok’s second String Quartet, the mournful first and third movements draw on intervals from Hungarian peasant music. The contrasting second movement is a driving rondo—another classic form based on a returning, repeated theme. The folk music that inspired this energetic movement was from North Africa. Listen for the rhythmic, repetitive ostinato—inspired by Arabian drumming.
