The central theme of this podcast episode revolves around the vital role of fostering connections between humans and shelter dogs, particularly through the lens of personal anecdotes and insights shared by our esteemed guest, Jean. Throughout our dialogue, we explore the profound impact of adopting and fostering animals, emphasizing the significance of understanding one's lifestyle to ensure a harmonious integration of a pet into the family. Jean Alfieri imparts invaluable wisdom from her experiences at the Humane Society, highlighting transformative stories of dog adoptions that change the lives of animals and enrich the lives of their new owners. As we delve into her latest literary work, "Twisty and True Tales of a Shelter Dog Matchmaker," we are reminded of the importance of encouraging individuals to embrace the joy and responsibility of pet ownership. Ultimately, this episode serves as a poignant reminder of the blessings that arise from fostering compassion and connection in our communities.Jean Alfieri is a Human Resource professional and a Positivity Coach. She is also an author, speaker, and dog fan. She finds hope and joy in both her work at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and her adopted dogs' lives. Jean promotes reading in her school visits and encourages adults to their incredible stories in her guided journals. She is an avid proponent of adoption for all dogs, whether pure breeds, mixed breeds, young dogs, or “vintage” (her preference), who need a forever home. Her favorite breed is ‘Rescued.'The dialogue unfolds with a profound exploration of human-animal connections, mainly focusing on the emotional and transformative experiences within pet adoption and rescue. The guest, an individual deeply entrenched in the humane society and a positivity coach, shares poignant anecdotes illuminating the often-overlooked narratives surrounding displaced dogs and their journeys towards finding loving homes. A key theme presented is the significance of understanding both the needs of the animals and the capabilities of potential adopters, emphasizing the responsibility inherent in the act of adopting a pet. The discussion is enriched with personal stories that exemplify the joy and fulfillment of facilitating successful matches between animals and families, underscoring the sentiment that every creature deserves a chance at a happy life. Furthermore, the wisdom imparted through the guest's reflections on life lessons learned during this process serves as a reminder of the kindness and empathy that is necessary in both human and animal interactions. This episode ultimately champions the idea that fostering relationships, whether with pets or among people, can lead to profound and lasting impacts on individual lives and the community at large.Takeaways: In the pursuit of making financial decisions, it is imperative to discern between spending wisely and squandering resources, as articulated through personal anecdotes. The narrative emphasizes the significance of authentic connections and understanding one's purpose, particularly in the context of human-animal relationships at shelters. A recurring theme in this discourse is the importance of not diluting one's message or identity, urging individuals to embrace their truths without compromise. Fostering pets not only aids in their wellbeing but can also lead to unexpected emotional bonds, illustrating the profound impact of compassion on both human and canine lives.

There is a divide among sustainability advocates concerning urban development. At a glance, it may seem that halting all development would be beneficial. However, John Olson urges us to look beyond the surface and consider the implications of how we develop our cities, as well as the potential consequences of stopping development altogether. He believes we need to shift the status quo mindset of development. Rapid urbanization, suburban sprawl, and the degradation of natural resources have strained infrastructure, exacerbated social inequalities, and threatened environmental sustainability. New urban planning approaches foster deeper human connections, mitigate climate change, and build communities that are resilient, equitable, and prosperous for future generations. John's passion and dedication is creating inspiring places that foster deeper connections with each other and our natural environment. With over two decades of experience integrating smart growth principles across various project types, his strength is creating innovative and sustainable solutions, engaging a wide variety of stakeholders, and leading projects from vision to implementation and beyond. John earned his Landscape Architecture degree from Kansas State University. He has a passion and vested interest in projects that enrich the Colorado Springs area in which he and his wife of over twenty years have lived and raised their family of five. His commitment extends to serving on multiple boards. Recognized for his impact, he currently serves as Chair of the Colorado Springs Urban Renewal Authority and Co-Chair of ULI Southern Colorado. He helped found the Colorado Chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism, and Colorado Springs Urban Intervention. He is an Accredited New Urbanist, Registered Landscape Architect, and LEED Accredited Professional. While they sell and service a variety of bikes and cater to all types of cyclists from hardcore mountain bikers to families, they're primarily a mountain bike shop carrying brands including Yeti Cycles, Specialized, Norco and Intense. They call themselves a drinking club with a cycling problem, and while they may enjoy gathering for beers post ride, the Manitou Spokes is a club full of heart and a passion for their Manitou Springs community and fellow cyclists. The club began in 2009 and meets Tuesdays at 5pm from the start of daylight savings in May to the end in October, the Manitou Spokes offers 3 ride options each week: a Flat & Friendly Road Ride, a Hot & Hilly Road Ride and a Mountain Bike Ride, the Trail Trekkers. Following the rides, they rejoin to drink and dine together and support a different local brewery or bar. While you might find photos on Facebook, this group is only social in person, there is no website. The main way to connect with the Manitou Spokes is by showing up and getting on their email list. They meet from the back of the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month and an alternate location (disclosed in the club email) on 1st and 5th Tuesdays. It was a lively multi-generational gathering of guests for our interview and very representative of the variety of ages and abilities in the club. We enjoyed sipping some great Colorado local beer during the show as is fitting with the club, although one rider pointed out you don't have to drink to fit in. Colorado Springs is a bucket list destination for mountain biking, most especially due to the variety of trails, terrains, views, and accessibility, but it has been community support through local trail building non-profits that has been key to maintaining and growing it and making it so great. But there was still a need for more advanced trail advocacy and building and now thanks to the Colorado Springs Mountain Biking Association, it's getting even better. The organization, formed just two years ago, has fast become a force in helping to speed up the process for creating and improving trails and connections - not just for advanced mountain bikers but all levels of users. Discover how the symbiotic relationship between our environment and our economic development can lead to a more sustainable future with national speaker and Colorado author, John Giordanengo. John has spent the last three decades in the trenches of conservation, restoration ecology, non-profit development, and small-business ownership. That work, coupled with investigative research from across the globe, led to his recent book, Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies, which was a finalist in the 2023 Colorado Book Awards. Drawing from his systemic experiences, Giordanengo will share insights on aligning environmental values with critical economic and social goals, bridging the gap between the inherent values of our environmental and economic systems in the Pikes Peak Region. John Giordanengo began building his career in ecological restoration throughout the Western U.S. While studying business in the late eighties, he became intrigued by a universal challenge: preserving earth's ecosystems while meeting humanity's economic needs. Giordanengo offers lecture series at universities and public venues across the U.S. and several other countries, and works with entrepreneurs, non-profits, and industry leaders to create sustainable solutions to complex challenges. He lives in Fort Collins, where he plays music, gardens, and strengthens his professional networks. What is a permablitz? Ally Richardson invites fellow permaculturists Alexandra Malecki and Beth Carbone to discuss this engaging social permaculture event. We couldn't contain our giggles! Together, we share our experiences with these community gatherings, which we believe truly enhance our ability to achieve the impossible. In alignment with Mayor Yemi's initiative on 1,000 Neighborhood Gatherings Initiative, a permablitz not only tackles seemingly impossible tasks but also addresses mental health issues and isolation, all while offering support and sunshine. Find more information about a permablitz here: https://www.permablitz.net/ Since the recording in August, Alex Malecki has joined the 1,000 Neighborhood Gathering Initiative! We're now at 767 gatherings. We need 233 more, with just over two weeks to go! Have you hosted a gathering recently? Register yours here: https://coloradosprings.gov/1000Gatherings Mentioned in the episode: The mystery book that was referred to by Beth, given by Alex, is the SKIP book by Paul Wheaton and Mike Hasaal. Skip is short for Skills to inherit property. There are many people who have built wonderful permaculture systems on their land, but with no heirs. This program allows for an opportunity to prove you have the skills to take care of the land. Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with Chairman Doug Lamborn, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, U.S. House Committee on Armed Services discussing the policy issues impacting America's national defense and the nation's security partnership with trusted allies. Today, we are experiencing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East with rising tensions in Southeast Asia. The time-tested policy of "peace through strength" has been weakened by lack of American leadership on the world stage. The conversation also addresses the concern of America's isolationism and the principled message articulated by one of America's greatest presidents: "We in America have learned bitter lessons from two World Wars: It is better to be here ready to protect the peace, than to take blind shelter across the sea, rushing to respond only after freedom is lost. We've learned that isolationism never was and never will be an acceptable response to tyrannical governments with an expansionist intent." — President Ronald Reagan The conversation with Congressman Lamborn also focuses on the promise of a new era in the Middle East with the proposed US-Saudi Arabia Economic and Security Alliance which could transform the region and benefit both nations on the economic and trade fronts. Saudi Arabia could become a major hub for trade and tourism and a gateway to over 400 million consumers in Arab countries. Bio | Congressman Doug Lamborn In Colorado, Doug was called to public office and served in the Colorado General Assembly from 1995 to 2006, in both the State House and State Senate. During his time in the Colorado Legislature, Doug was elected Senate President Pro-Tem, served as Chairman of the Senate State Military and Veterans Affairs Committee, Chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus, and House Majority Whip. Doug was then elected to the US House of Representatives in 2006 to represent Colorado's Fifth District. Colorado's Fifth District, based in Colorado Springs, is one of our nation's most military-intensive congressional districts and the home to more than 100,000 veterans who have served our country with distinction and honor. Because of the district's military and veteran concentration, Doug serves as a high-ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee and a former member for ten years of the Veterans Affairs Committee. In these roles, he has protected important national defense funding, programs, and missions and has fought hard for the right of veterans to receive the healthcare they have earned. Additionally, the Congressman has worked since his first day in office to bring about a dignified and fitting National Veterans Cemetery to the Pikes Peak Region, which is now completed. Additionally, Doug currently serves as the Chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee. The Strategic Forces Subcommittee has jurisdiction over Department of Defense and Department of Energy policy related to strategic deterrence, strategic stability, nuclear weapons, strategic and nuclear arms control, nonproliferation, nuclear safety, missile defense, and space; Department of Defense programs and accounts related to nuclear weapons, strategic missiles, nuclear command and control systems, Department of Defense intelligence space, space systems and services of the military departments, and intermediate and long-range missile defense systems; and Department of Energy national security programs and accounts. Doug also serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and its subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands, and the Energy and Mineral Resources subcommittee. The Subcommittee on Federal Lands is responsible for all matters related to the National Park System, U.S. Forests, public lands, and national monuments. The Energy and Mineral Resources subcommittee oversees public resources on public lands, including offshore energy development. Throughout his time in public service, Doug has been a leader on pro-family and small business issues, a strong advocate for our veterans and our military, and a supporter of lower taxes, immigration reform, less government spending, and protection of the Second Amendment. Doug is married to Jeanie, his wife of 47 years and an accomplished artist and former teacher at the Bemis School of Art in Colorado Springs. The Lamborn's have also raised five extremely successful children. Their four sons were Eagle Scouts and, among them, have served as a doctor, in the military, as an attorney, and as a member of the film industry in Los Angeles. americasrt.com (https://americasrt.com/) https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @RepDLamborn @ileaderssummit @AmericasRT @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Colorado's Circular Economy Development Center facilitates connections in Colorado to create circular economy solutions using materials that Coloradans recycle. Archibald, Southern Front Range Satellite Office Coordinator for the CEDC shares details and case studies. The Center's mission is to assist companies striving for circularity by helping them advance their business or locate to Colorado. The goal is to create individual, scalable pathways toward circular economies—and step one is creating beneficial collaboration and innovation between Colorado businesses. This program of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment provides end market solutions and fosters the round-table discussions that lead us to circularity. They engage and work closely with stakeholders to mediate solutions that work for our businesses, communities, and environment alike. During Q&A, there is also an interesting discussion about efforts to have just one trash hauler picking up in each neighborhood, eliminating multiple trucks, reducing costs and cutting carbon emissions. Alicia Archibald has been developing partnerships and assisting communities throughout Colorado for over 20 years. Most of her career has centered around waste diversion, sustainable procurement, and recycling systems. She's based in Colorado Springs.
