The first mention of Beersheba in the scriptures involves Abraham and a covenant established with a neighboring king. Abraham commemorates this event by planting a tamarisk tree as a memorial presumably for future generations, who will appreciate all the more its shade and thereby be reminded of God's faithfulness marked at this location. We might imagine Jacob approaching the region now some 200 years later pausing to offer sacrifices of remembrance and worship in the shadow of this now colossal tree. Review & overview: With the patriarchal blessing and calling of Jacob recorded in Gen 27 & 28, the record had focused on this patriarch exclusively through chapter 35. Here the narrative shifts to the next generation, especially Joseph, as the appointed son who would reunite and spare the covenant family from calamity. Chapters 37-41 follow Joseph's journey unto messianic ascension until the news of the long lost son's reign in Egypt finally reaches Jacob's ears in chapter 45. Chapter 46 then turns the spotlight of revelation back toward Jacob briefly in his waning years. As this chapter opens, the Lord speaks once again to the aging patriarch in a vision of the night, reassuring him of the promises of covenant revealed so many years ago at places like this to him, his father Isaac, & his grandfather Abraham who preceded him.

A main purpose for this Bible study podcast series on Genesis (and the one on Exodus also) is to see how the five key books of the Hebrew scriptures in Jesus' day testify of Him, Jesus, the Messiah.  This is all related to the gospel of John chapter five.  Jesus says that “all scripture testifies of Him.” (John 5:39)  All they had then was the Old Testament, the Hebrew scriptures, and the key books of the Bible then was the Torah, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.  In this lesson we focus on Gen. 21:14-34.  In these verses is an amazing way the Torah testifies of the gospel, the New Covenant, Jesus, and our being “grafted in to the olive tree, the olive tree that is a picture of Israel.”  We will again see that God inspired Moses to teach us the gospel, aspects of the Kingdom of Adonai, the amazing redemption plan of the Lord, and to "see" King Jesus, the Messiah, the one who comes to complete what the Torah could not do (Acts 13:38-39).  We will then see that the Torah written by Moses is nothing more than THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MOSES.  But, in order to “see” Jesus in Gen. 21:14-34 we need to understand geography and the plants of the Bible.  We need to study the Tamarisk tree.  Once we do we can finally get at the intended meaning of what Adonai is trying to get us to know, to understand. In this lesson I mentioned I'd provide some pictures of two plants.  The first is the Tamarisk tree.  You can see that below.   The second plant is the “broom tree” called the rotem in Hebrew.  It is likely this is the bush that Hagar and Ishmael were under in the shade.  It is a large bush that provides just enough shade for one person.  It is likely the bush that Elijah was laying under when he escaped from Ahab and Jezebel.  See the rotem below. I also am linking you to lesson 34 in this series.  Hagar is the first person in the Torah to encounter the ANGEL OF THE LORD.  It happens in chapter 21 and back in 16.  In lesson 34 I show that the Torah, the very words of God, PROVE unequivocally that the ANGEL OF THE LORD is God, a manifestation of the Lord Himself.  It is one of the “faces” of the Lord so that He can make Himself visible to us and we will not die.  Here's the link to lesson 34 - https://lightofmenorah.podbean.com/e/the-gospel-according-to-moses-genesis-lesson-34-gen-161-16/ Who is this guy, Rev. In this podcast we talk about three components of living a could life. 1. Living 2. Loving 3. Leaving Start by asking yourself these questions: How could I live? What is living?  Really living? Not just existing but truly living. What's musing? What's missing? What does it look like to live out of our imagination, not our history? What does it look like to live out of our inspiration, not our obligation? The key is not prioritize our schedule, but to schedule our priorities Ask yourself what really matters and priorities your life by this. Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not on what is essential.  We live with the emphasis on being efficient rather than understanding what efficiency can be good for and where it is limited. “What you believe about your life is what you make true about your life.” -The mountain is You by Brianna Wiess- Be Present! Live  in the present not in the regrets of the past  Live in the present not in the worries of the future. When do you feel most alive? How could I love? The six Greek words of love: 1. Agape - The unconditional love, too will good for another. This love sees past behaviors and loves without expectations.  2. Eros - The love that desires and expresses deeper love through sensuality. Connection through vulnerability, naked and unashamed.  3. Philos - The love between equals or brothers. The love that creates and generates loyalty and dedication. 4. Storge - The love and affection in a family, especially between parents and children. It can be also used for connection of a clan, team or organization. 5. Xenia - The love associated with hospitality. It is rooted in generosity and reciprocity.  6. Philautia - The love of oneself or the regard for one's own happiness or advantage. When healthy it is associated with self-compassion, when unhealthy it is self obsession.  The greatest axiom of Christianity is “Love God, Love Self, Love Neighbor as self” Loving self is the center point, the crux of the matter.  Exercise: Name all of the things you love... Did you name yourself? Loving is messy. When we love we accept who we are. We are all messy, this is part of it. This is by design and meant to keep us alive and engaged. Love at the source will pour into the relationships of life. How could I leave? Practice leaving by sabbath rest and vacation.  Put whole life into something and then leave it.  If we create paradise here we have to leave it, so we might as well practicing leaving it as we go. This is leaving a legacy and creating a heritage. It is living a life that outlasts the years lived. Tr”I”bes - In the middle of the word ‘tribe' is the person “I”.  Not that the tribe revolves around I, but that I make a contribution to the tribe.  When we think in term of plural tribes we tip the balance to change the world The Tamarisk (Tam-U-Risk) Tree in ancient eastern writings was often planted when a covenant agreement was being made. The Tamarisk tree didn't really start to bloom and show maturity until 80 years after it was planted. It would be a reminder to grandchildren of a covenant agreement made three generations before.  Ask yourself, What trees have I planted? How am I make things better for the people that follow me in the generations to come? How am I setting the future generations to go further than I did? Conclusion: Living How could I live? What is living?  Not just existing but truly living. How do we live out of our imagination, not our history? Am I living out of our inspiration or out obligations? Loving How could I love?  How could I love effectively when considering the six Greek words of love? When I make a list of the things that I love do I consider myself and where am I on the list? Leaving a Legacy How could I leave? How am I practicing leaving by sabbath rest and vacations.  How can I make a contribution to the tribe realizing I am in the middle of that? How can I plant a tree that my grandkids can enjoy?

"We Shouldn't Be at War with Plants" feat. Prof. Juliet Stromberg Julie Stromberg is a retired professor from Arizona State University, where she received her PhD in Plant Ecology in 1988. While at ASU, she specialized in riparian ecosystems. Much of her research focused on relationships between stream and ground water hydrology and riparian ecosystems, and on effects of ecosystem disturbance (floods and fire) on riparian plant populations, communities, and landscapes. Some of her studies were conducted at reference sites where human influence is minimal, while others were carried out at hydrologically altered sites or at sites undergoing restoration. By understanding pattern and process in riparian ecosystems, she provided resource managers with information that could inform conservation and restoration efforts. She contributed to over 80 scholarly articles during her career and now focuses on non-academic writing. Nikki Hill joined me as the co-host of this episode. Nikki has a degree in environmental science and has worked in restoration and agriculture. Currently she invests her energy in wildtending efforts. We co-authored a zine together called, "The Troubles of 'Invasive' Plants," which you can download for free at my blog. Much of our discussion focused on Tamarisks, aka Saltcedars, a tree of African origin that thrives in riparian areas across the western United States. Tamarisks have been called, "invasive," but the whole story of this plant--and the reasons for its abundance--is far more complex than that simplistic and unscientific label suggests. We talked about how popular knowledge and policy lags behind science and research; how human water use has changed the ecology of the Southwest; how the endangered bird species, the Willow Fly Catcher, has come to depend on Tamarisk; how it doesn't make sense that some biodiversity indexes ignore non-native plants in their tallies; the role of scientists in manufacturing myths around Tamarisks; how agriculture devastates biodiversity; the role of annuals--native or not--in early ecological succession; how non-native plants can have beneficial ecological effects; climate change and plant migration; plant agency and sentience; contemporary alienation from nature and the importance of re-engaging; the healing practice of wildtending; and how an adversarial approach to restoration won't solve the ecological problems we made by being adversarial. In this message, Pastor Bob shares his insights in the story of Abraham and Abimelech and "The Well of the Seven."

Today in the Word Devotional

Although this Old Testament book gets its name from Samuel, one of its main characters, its primary focus is the contrast between Saul and David. Saul’s story unfolds like a great tragedy. His failure is foreshadowed at the outset, and all subsequent events move toward this sad conclusion. Today’s reading reveals the final chapter in Saul’s story. His life ended just as Samuel had predicted. The Philistines dishonored Saul’s body in death, fastening it to the city wall of Beth Shan as a token of their victory (v. 10). The men of Jabesh Gilead recovered the king’s body in a daring night-time raid and buried the bones beneath a Tamarisk tree. Saul’s first victory as king had been to rescue the people of Jabesh Gilead from the Ammonites (1 Sam. 11:1–11). Saul’s greatest tragedy was his lack of faith. He did not listen to the Lord and often took matters into his own hands. In the final scene of this tragedy, Saul’s weak character is on full display. Critically wounded by the archers, Saul begged his shield-bearer to finish the job. When the shield-bearer refused, Saul fell on his own sword. What was the difference between Saul and David? David was a bold warrior, but it was not boldness that was the secret to his success. Ultimately, the difference between these two kings was a matter of faith. As Israel’s next king, David would go on to greater success. He would also have his own share of spectacular failures. But faith always led David back to God’s grace and forgiveness. This is why the Lord considered David “a man after his own heart” (1 Sam. 13:14). David turned his ear to God and obeyed His commands. David was a man of faith. >> We have learned many lessons from Samuel, David, and Saul. We have seen that courage is admirable, but faith is even more essential. And we are encouraged to turn our ear and our heart to God, honoring Him with every step of our life.

King Saul, who began his reign with great promise and potential, was brutally and disgracefully defeated by the Philistines. His tragic story is a warning to all of us, cautions Alistair Begg. The Bible teaches that death is not the end of existence; therefore, placing hope in human power is folly. Confronted by political chaos, social disintegration, and our own mortality, we are reminded that our hope and refuge is Jesus, the only King who triumphed over death and hell.
