In this episode of Creative Guts, co-hosts Laura Harper Lake and Sarah Wrightsman chat with Portsmouth City Councilor and advocate for the arts, Nancy Pearson! Only in Portsmouth can someone run for local office on an arts campaign and win — and that’s exactly what Nancy did. During her time in office, Nancy championed the City’s “percent for art” ordinance, ensuring public art would be part of every new municipally-owned development. Nancy’s passion for the Foundry Place public art projects is palpable, even in podcast format. Get to know Nancy Pearson on Facebook (www.facebook.com/nancypearsoncitycouncil) and, please, next time you’re in Portsmouth, park at the Foundry Place parking garage and check it out! Nancy Pearson--Portsmouth, NH councilor--helped pioneer a "public dialogue" in her council meetings. While it replaced some council meeting public comment sessions--and angered public commenters--she maintains that the dialogue has been a successful alternative. Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 24th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,700 VHS transfers and digital recordings. My Friday Night Feature highlights the pilot episode of HBO's "Dead Like Me" as edited for rebroadcast on SciFi, with a breakout on Dolores Herbig herself, Christine Willes, and her several appearances through my media collections. Christine Willes in "Dead Like Me" Christine Willes in "Reaper" Christine Willes in "Supernatural" A crowdsourcing attempt, Exhibit D, settled out of court when I was able to track down on my own the source of three clips from, as it turns out, "Rockstar Supernova" off CBS. My classic collection turned up the pilot episode of "Psych," the CG-heavy NOVA presentation of "The Elegant Universe" with Brian Greene and strong episode installments of "Rescue Me," "Monk" and AMC's "Hustle." My current collection turned up a PBS presentation of 2013's "Hawking" about the life of physicist Stephen Hawking in his own words and interviews with family and friends. Also, the BBC America presentation of "An Adventure in Space and Time" -- a sort of making-of dramatization of the first seasons of "Doctor Who" -- the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special 2017 "Twice Upon a Time" and a look back at the Peter Capaldi and Stephen Moffat eras, along with a couple of Mark Twain award presentations and the series premiere of "Happy!" In What I've Been Watching, some comments on the finales of "The Alienist," "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace" and "The Magicians," as well as the live version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and oh my yes: The second season premiere of "Legion," which destroyed my ability to even. Finally, in "Video Outreach," I helped Nancy Pearson, a theater friend of mine in Minot, with transferring a half-dozen VHS tapes of Stanley, N.D., speech and music nights and an all-school reunion dating from the late-'80s and early-'90s that she said turned up in a housecleaning enterprise. Following the transfer, I was able to hand them off to her and get some reactions. Good to check in!
This month's podcast report of activities at BARN - Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network - tells the story of the merger of the long-standing Field's End group of writers with the BARN Writers studio. The two are coming together as one! Telling the story of this exciting merger are Nancy Pearson, the studio lead for BARN Writers, and our BARN board member and monthly podcast correspondent Catherine Camp. Ever since 2002, Field's End has been the go-to group for both budding and established professional writers on Bainbridge Island. That year, aspiring writer Nicole Vick asked the Bainbridge Public Library board to host a group that could offer professional quality writing classes. Acclaimed novelist David Guterson ("Snow Falling on Cedars"), then a Library board member, helped form the group. Nancy Pearson was an early active member of Field's End. She explains in the podcast the excitement of merging these two writers' groups into one. The merger will increase the opportunities for professional training and peer-to-peer collaboration, and it will offer the advantage the dedicated BARN physical facilities, as compared with the prior shared use of the Library by Field's End. BARN Writers -- and 10 other BARN artisan studios -- currently operate out of substantial but interim space in Rolling Bay. And, as Catherine Camp explains, a two-story, well-equipped, 25,000 square foot home for the diverse set of artisan studios is under construction in the heart of the island. It will be ready for occupancy - and for a continuation of hands-on workshops, classes, open studio sessions, and more - by spring 2017. This podcast explains the many activities and events for writers that are currently being offered by BARN. Credits: BCB host, audio editor and social media publisher: Barry Peters.
In this 12-minute podcast we learn about the special weekend workshop offered by Bainbridge Island's BARN on March 19-20 on how to write a 10-minute play ... and get it produced! In this podcast, the 2-day workshop is described by 3 guests: professional trainer Mark Harvey Levine; Nancy Pearson (studio lead of the local BARN Writers Group); and Dinah Manoff (a Tony award-winner, celebrity of stage and screen, and founder of the local NW Theater Lab). BARN (Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network) is offering the workshop with an award-winning professional playwright from Los Angeles, Mark Harvey Levine. His plays have been produced worldwide in over 1300 productions. The workshop takes place on the weekend of March 19th and 20th, from 10am–4pm. The cost is $265 and registration is limited to 18 participants. The location will be at a private residence on Bainbridge Island. Many people do not realize it is far easier to get a ten-minute play produced than a full-length play. Theaters usually want plays that have not been produced which often leads to an advantage for new writers. Mark Harvey Levine will lead workshop attendees through the writing of an entire play from scratch and cover everything from format to characters to genre. For additional details or to register, go to the BARN web page for this event. Credits: BCB host, editor and publisher: Barry Peters.
