On today's episode, Brian and Mandy discuss a variety of topics starting with a follow-up on AI's ability to generate music and lyrics, exemplified by a humorous AI-generated gospel song dedicated to the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The conversation then shifts to recent developments in streaming services, highlighting an interesting turn in the 'streaming wars' with new bundles that mix content from traditionally competitive studios, such as Disney, Hulu, Warner Brothers, and others, which could potentially change viewing habits and the landscape of digital media consumption. The episode explores the implications of limited Marvel releases per year and the potential impact on content quality and reporting. Additionally, Brian and Mandy dive into the latest in Doctor Who, analyzing new episodes and their connection to classic elements, as well as speculating on future directions based on character developments, villains introduced, and the storytelling techniques used. The discussion encapsulates the excitement and concern surrounding current trends in geek culture, from AI in music to the evolving strategies of streaming services and the enduring appeal of Doctor Who. 00:00 Welcome to the Geek Watch Podcast! 00:36 AI and the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster 06:43 The Streaming Wars Heat Up 10:19 The Resurgence of Physical Media 16:50 X-Men Series Finale Discussion 19:21 Post-Credit Scene Revelations 19:55 Marvel's Future Plans and Rumors 22:35 Doctor Who's New Episodes: A Deep Dive 23:38 Exploring Doctor Who's Latest Episodes in Detail 29:06 The Maestro: Analyzing Doctor Who's New Villain 32:46 Anticipation for Stephen Moffat's Upcoming Episode 34:25 Wrap Up

This episode of Does it Fly? is presented by ScreenUK. ScreenUK is a free discovery platform celebrating the very best of UK-produced film, television, animation and gaming and sharing it with audiences around the world. ScreenUK is the go-to place to discover your next favorite movie, show, or game and features tons of exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews and all the info you need to find out how and where to watch or play your newest obsessions, wherever you are in the world. Make ScreenUK.org your next stop. The film that launched the careers of a Star Wars star, a Doctor, and even a DC superhero (albeit a deep cut)! Yes, that's right, we're talking about cult classic, Attack the Block, this week. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure yet (and seriously, this movie is a blast, so if you haven't seen it, go check it out right now!), Attack the Block is a 2011 science fiction/horror film written and directed by Joe Cornish and starring future Star Wars franchise hero John Boyega and historic Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker. The film follows a group of teenagers living in a South London housing estate who defend their neighborhood from an alien invasion. So what flies and what doesn't? Well, these aliens have come from the outer reaches of space and crash-landed on Earth, with the females spreading their pheromones and attracting a horde of ferocious males from across the solar system to Earth, so Hakeem takes a look at everything from the basic concept of pheromones to how the sun's magnetic field allows for things like “solar sailing” to take place. Tamara unpacks not only the aliens themselves, but also gives everyone some background info on how the unique look of these terrifying creatures was realized onscreen. And that's only the beginning of the fun in our latest episode! Remember that you can join in on the conversation in the comments on our YouTube page, so be sure to like, subscribe, and come back for more!FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Here are a few recommendations!Pheromones“Pheromones are chemistry and biology. Chemistry and biology have something in them that physics doesn't have. Do you know what that is? Nasty! Bodily fluids and things like that.”‘Oumuamua“We know it came from outside of our solar system, for one reason only: the speed at which it was moving.”Oort cloud“There is allegedly a spherical distribution of comets called the Oort cloud that surrounds the solar system, so sometimes comets do come in from over the poles of the sun or something like that, so it's not in the plane of the orbit.”Parker Solar Probe“As far as traveling through space on solar rays, that is something that can actually be done. There's different forms of propulsion. There's electric sail propulsion. You can have a physical sail. You can have an electric sail, where you create an electric field, and because the particles streaming away from the sun and other stars are electrically charged you can get a thrust out of that. Or you can have a magnetic sail [which] is pretty clever.”Attack the Block's Aliens Were Just as Terrifying Behind the ScenesTamara gives everyone some info on alien performer Terry Notary but there's all kinds of additional fun info here for you to help fill in the blanks on just what made these creatures so convincingly scary.SUGGESTED VIEWINGAttack the Block is so much fun very much because of the unique sensibility of writer/director Joe Cornish. And first of all, we must once again ask, if you haven't seen Attack the Block yet, what are you waiting for? This movie is a treasure! Go watch!Cornish wrote (along with Edgar Wright and Stephen Moffat) 2011's criminally-underrated The Adventures of TinTin film (where's the trilogy we were promised?!?) But you can also see his influence in Marvel Studios' first Ant-Man movie (which he helped write) and Netflix's sadly gone-after-one-season Lockwood & Co. FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! This ambitious musical project takes in a series of iconic National Trust locations across England as its inspiration, turning them into unlikely recording spaces.Michael's work for film and television has been also widely recognised, winning an EMMY award in 2014, and Royal Television Society, Music&Sound, and Televisual Bulldog awards as well as a BAFTA nomination and 2 further EMMY nominations for the critically acclaimed BBC series Sherlock, which he scores with David Arnold. Other recent TV projects include the 4th season of BAFTA-winning crime drama Unforgotten and the BBC's new Dracula adaptation, created by Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss.Prior to achieving acclaim as a composer himself, Michael enjoyed significant achievements as a music editor on a number of blockbuster films such as Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Richard Curtis' Love Actually, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men. Hey baby, what’s your back story? It should be a pick-up line at a bar, yet it somehow is not a pick-up line at any bar that I know of except maybe in a New Yorkercartoon or a bar in a town where there’s one of those MFA programs in writing literature for literary people doing literary things. Anyway, it’s a term writers throw around all the time and it is basically just how we imagine our characters’ lives went before they are in the actual story that we’re writing. I know! How can you imagine that your character had a life before your story? It’s like imagining your spouse had a life before you that wasn’t totally centered around you. Us narcissists have a hard time with that. Do you know, in nine hundred years of time and space, I’ve never met anybody who wasn’t important… Stephen Moffat, Dr. Who, A Christmas Carol According to a post on Now Novelthere are three uses of back story. Developing the understanding of the characters. Like if your dad died of a heart attack in front of you and you couldn’t save him, then your character might have a savior complex. It helps the reader understand your characters’ motivations. It can heighten the stakes and the suspense. You were once addicted to dating cops. Cops were always bad for you. Will you date this one? NO! YOU MUST NOT. It makes it real damn it. By the time, you make it into a book, you’re not going to be a blank slate, born out of Zeus’ head or a clamshell fully formed on page 1. We all have prologues. Standout asks how much back story does a story need and answers its own question pretty simply: If judged solely on complexity, the answer to ‘how much back story should I include?’ would be ‘enough to pay for the reader’s efforts,’ however you also need to consider immersion. - Standout Ah. Okay? Here is our advice: Don’t be fake. Don’t be pretend. We all know people who show up at a party, engage in small talk about absolutely nothing other than the weather, the traffic, where they work. There is no underlayment. It’s like they are a rug thrown on the floor, but if you touch that rug it will just slip away because there’s nothing holding it there. Do not let your characters be rugs. Ground those suckers with nails and staples if you have to. ModPodge them to the floor, give them a life before you. Don’t tell us everything about them. We do not know that they prefer Aquafina to Poland Spring water or that they had an ingrown toenail when they were twenty-four any more than you want to know about the guy at the party’s hemorrhoid treatment unless it’s really good. Be sparing. Stephen King: The most important things to remember about back story are that (a) everyone has a history and (b) most of it isn’t very interesting. Writing Tip of the Pod Find the balance in your backstory and your life. Dog Tip for Life Run through adversity. Don’t give up. SHOUT OUT The music we’ve clipped and shortened in this podcast is awesome and is made available through the Creative Commons License. Here’s a link to that and the artist’s website. My Friday Night Feature highlights the pilot episode of HBO's "Dead Like Me" as edited for rebroadcast on SciFi, with a breakout on Dolores Herbig herself, Christine Willes, and her several appearances through my media collections.  Christine Willes in "Dead Like Me" Christine Willes in "Reaper" Christine Willes in "Supernatural" A crowdsourcing attempt, Exhibit D, settled out of court when I was able to track down on my own the source of three clips from, as it turns out, "Rockstar Supernova" off CBS. My classic collection turned up the pilot episode of "Psych," the CG-heavy NOVA presentation of "The Elegant Universe" with Brian Greene and strong episode installments of "Rescue Me," "Monk" and AMC's "Hustle." My current collection turned up a PBS presentation of 2013's "Hawking" about the life of physicist Stephen Hawking in his own words and interviews with family and friends. Also, the BBC America presentation of "An Adventure in Space and Time" -- a sort of making-of dramatization of the first seasons of "Doctor Who" -- the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special 2017 "Twice Upon a Time" and a look back at the Peter Capaldi and Stephen Moffat eras, along with a couple of Mark Twain award presentations and the series premiere of "Happy!" Finally, in "Video Outreach," I helped Nancy Pearson, a theater friend of mine in Minot, with transferring a half-dozen VHS tapes of Stanley, N.D., speech and music nights and an all-school reunion dating from the late-'80s and early-'90s that she said turned up in a housecleaning enterprise. Series 10 of Doctor Who was arguably a triumph, particularly for those who have been stalwart in Stephen Moffat’s defense, been overwhelmed by Peter Capaldi’s fanboy-earns-title-role portrayal of the Doctor, and the highly praiseworthy performances by […]

On this episode, we're talking about "World Enough and Time" which was boring until very suddenly it wasn't. Marvel as Danica explains the show we've all been watching for over a decade! Swoon as Brandon yells about how Stephen Moffat is terrible at gender politics! Or actually, they both do that. A lot. That guy is NO GOOD. Brandon is also sure that Stephen Moffat got divorced, but that wasn't true so much as it FELT true. Anyway. On this week's show, they watch "Extremis" and it's not very good. Then, it hit me - I have recently introduced my wonderful man to the joys of Doctor Who and his recent conversion has proven fun to watch! As a person who had never seen the show, it was my love and zeal for the Doctor that prompted him to begin watching it and he has started to understand the madness that ensues from becoming a Whovian. Doctor Who säsong 9 har nyligen avslutats.
