Director Francis Ford Coppola is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of the twentieth century, the visionary force behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and dozens of other films. For decades, Coppola had sought to make a film drawing parallels between the fall of the Roman Republic and the future of the United States by retelling the Catilinarian conspiracy in modern New York, but was unable to secure studio funding. After three decades of fits and starts, Coppola ultimately spent $120 million of his own money to make the film, drawn largely from the fortune he made in the winemaking business. Released in fall of 2024, the ensemble cast features Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. After a troubled production and a rocky reception at Cannes, where the film premiered, Coppola was forced to spend additional money to market the film, but the trailer was removed for using fabricated pull quotes. Ultimately, the film grossed only $14.3 million at the box office - barely 10% of what it cost to make. But is this film - the ultimate vanity project - worth the wait or does it collapse under the weight of its own ambitions? All roads lead to Megalopolis! March 5th, 1993. A day that will live in infamy. On that date, Sir Nicolas Cage, Lord Samuel L. Jackson and director/activist E. Max Frye... solved... racism. Yes indeed. They did it with the help of a little film called Amos & Andrew (not Andy). You might doubt these claims, you might find them dubious... but need I remind you of the power of film. Ana and Dan would not volunteer for a road trip across a ruined America, even if it involved Gen-X micro-targeted mid-90s nostalgia. We break down The Electric State, a film that raises big questions about AI labor and passive entertainment but then does nothing interesting or coherent with them. The most expensive film Netflix has ever made (no, seriously), yet everything looks like a student film shot in the mustard aisle. The Tuch Tuches it up! Giancarlo Esposito does chillingly casual menace! All in vain. There's class war, robot angst, and echoes of Terminator, The Road, and that Fallout series I forgot to finish. There's some IR in this episode, and a critique of capitalism that feels like a drone strike from above. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The action/comedy/romance "Novacaine”  is surprisingly entertaining...If you can get past the bloody violence (and that's a big IF). A new Looney Tunes movie hit the theaters after it had been shelved, "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie," features favorites like Daffy Duck and Porky Pig and garnered a C+ rating by Andy. And for families looking for some faith-based content in this season of Lent and Easter, Andy recommends "The Last Supper," a sincere telling of the final week of the mortal life of Jesus, as seen through the eyes of his closest followers. Streaming on Netflix, you can watch one of the most expensive films ever, "The Electric State."  It's got an amazing cast (Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown, Stanley Tucci, Giancarlo Esposito, and more) and was made by the Russo Brothers. The film looks gorgeous but is still somehow missing...something. There were no movies starring the late Gene Hackman that were released in the US in 1999, but two of his films released in the US in 1998 – Tony Scott's Enemy of the State and Robert Benton's Twilight – were released in Europe in 1999. So because plenty has been said about the former, we are taking a look today at the latter. Directed by Kramer and Kramer writer and director Robert Benton and written by Benton and novelist Richard Russo, who also teamed up with star Paul Newman on 1994's adaptation of Russo's Nobody's Fool, Twilight stars Newman with a supporting cast of Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon, James Garner, Stockard Channing, Reese Witherspoon, Margo Martindale, John Spencer, Live Shrieber, the dying body of M. Emmet Walsh, and Giancarlo Esposito. Twilight was a box office failure and was met with a lukewarm reception by critics, but it is a very good case study in the question as to whether or not some actors - like Hackman - could be good in absolutely anything.

Mostly Superheroes the podcast is back! Join hosts Logan Janis, Andy The Giggler, and Scotty Scoop as they feature fan reviews from our Screen & Social event where we saw Captain America: Brave New World. The guys also review the film and talk about the good, the bad, and the "what the hell were they thinking?" moments.  Full podcast episode, movie trailer, and more: https://mostlysuperheroes.com/posts/captain-america-brave-new-world  Quick take: The movie doesn't have the magic of Deadpool & Wolverine or The Winter Soldier and, for unexplained reasons, wraps up loose ends from 2008's The Incredible Hulk. Not to mention, but of course, we're going to mention it—the total waste of Gus Fring, aka Giancarlo Esposito. Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson shines as bright Captain America in this packed film and Harrison Ford turns red as the new Thunderbolt Ross not quite filling the shoes of the late and great William Hurt. The crew gets into all of this and more.  Thanks to all that attended our Screen & Social! And a special thanks to our sponsors: Alamo Drafthouse STL, 4 Hands Brewing Co., More to Say with Randi Naughton, The Voltron Store and Team Jakey End the Stigma. The Captain America wing (heh) of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has carved out a logical space over the course of its four movies. Sure, they have the whiz-bang action sequences and solid acting performances as the other MCU entries — most of them anyway — but they're also palpably political thrillers. The same is true of the latest entry in Cap's corner, Captain America: Brave New World, which marks the first film with Anthony Mackie's Falcon chucking that shield hither and yon. But, without giving too much away, the new movie is kind of like the new Captain America: not as strong as the old one and thus somewhat drained of its impact.Does that make CA:BNW not enjoyable? Far from it. If you're generally pleased by Marvel's output, you'll likely be generally pleased by this one. Dori and Kpolly both count themselves in that camp, and in this episode they throw around such lofty praise as “very acceptable.” They also dig into the performances from a stellar cast that includes Mackie, Harrison Ford, Giancarlo Esposito and a possibly CGI Liv Tyler. You can hear all of their thoughts in this very acceptable episode by using the player at the top of the page or by finding Cinebuds wherever you do your podcast-listening.

Captain America: Brave New World marks the beginning of the second half of The Multiverse Saga. This installment weaves long-dangling threads from 2008's Incredible Hulk, events from Captain America: Civil War, and a world-shifting revelation from Eternals into an action-forward political thriller. In keeping with early Captain America storylines, Brave New World blends its “state of the sociopolitical landscape” level-set into a plot driven by high-stakes mission and a changing of the political guard. If you're coming into Captain America: Brave New World off of a (re)watch of The Falcon and the Winter Solider series, temper those expectations. In director Julius Onah's (Luce) film, Wilson may no longer be conflicted about assuming the mantle of Captain America; but he is wrestling with his role in the US military industrial complex, the pressure to be an unassailable Black hero, and taking repeated hits to his sense of self in an anti-Black system. It's a subtle (often too subtle), but intentional, schism at play throughout the entire movie. But it pays to remember, Sam Wilson's tenure as Captain America has just begun. This is not the moment he shakes off the fetters of respectability. Just like in the comics, Wilson's path forward is a more measured and pragmatic approach to combating inequity and defending against evil; seeming to operate within the realm of current reality rather than aggressively rejecting and dismantling oppressive ideologies and their attendant institutions. As a veteran and counselor (who specialized in helping other veterans suffering from PTSD) he openly advocated for the necessity of harm mitigation while carving out sustainable solutions. He still believes that despite the obstacles and judgment that we (society) can do better. Think John Lewis, not Stokely Carmichael. And that fact alone will be reason enough for some viewers to bounce off Brave New World.      Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters February 14, 2025 ♦♦ Director: Julius Onah Writers: Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, Julius Onah, Peter Glanz Starring: Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, Harrison Ford Runtime:  118 Minutes Synopsis: Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, finds himself in the middle of an international incident and must discover the motive behind a nefarious global plan.   Like what you hear?
