When a baseball fan despised for costing the team the pennant is killed in a bar, Detectives Briscoe and Green connect the crime to Walter Grimes, a man released from prison after 20 years for a murder he didn't commit. Attorney Rodney Fallon (played by Giancarlo Esposito) argues he's innocent because his time as a wrongfully convicted man made him a murderer. McCoy and Southerlyn find the cop who originally framed him. He says the bloody knife he planted was from a different murder committed by Grimes. With a dynamite cast of killers, including Christopher Walken at his best, Laurence Fishburne carrying practically the entire movie on his shoulders, David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, and Giancarlo Esposito, King of New York presents a morally gray crime movie where everyone, even the cops, are just the worst. Crime is the blood that keeps the city alive in this movie and an unreliable narrator is going to do his best to convince you that his crusade to run the criminal underground and thereby the entire city is just, good, and right. Stylish, slick, and kinetic, King of New York is like a Pixies song with loud, outrageous, and violent scenes of criminal carnage punctuated by quiet meditations on morality. Director Francis Ford Coppola is widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of the twentieth century, the visionary force behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and dozens of other films. For decades, Coppola had sought to make a film drawing parallels between the fall of the Roman Republic and the future of the United States by retelling the Catilinarian conspiracy in modern New York, but was unable to secure studio funding. After three decades of fits and starts, Coppola ultimately spent $120 million of his own money to make the film, drawn largely from the fortune he made in the winemaking business. Released in fall of 2024, the ensemble cast features Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. After a troubled production and a rocky reception at Cannes, where the film premiered, Coppola was forced to spend additional money to market the film, but the trailer was removed for using fabricated pull quotes. Ultimately, the film grossed only $14.3 million at the box office - barely 10% of what it cost to make. But is this film - the ultimate vanity project - worth the wait or does it collapse under the weight of its own ambitions? All roads lead to Megalopolis! Tonight on DYH we review The Electric State from Netflix!The Electric State is a 2025 American science fiction action-adventure film produced and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Its screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely is loosely based on the 2018 illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag. The film stars Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, alongside Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci.Plans for a film adaptation were announced in 2017, with Andy Muschietti. The Russo brothers signed on to direct in December 2020. Universal Pictures acquired the distribution rights before Netflix took over the rights in June 2022. Much of the cast was revealed between June 2022 and November 2024, with filming taking place in Atlanta, Georgia in fall 2022.
