All year long, but especially this week, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the amazing teachers who give their best every day to ensure students receive a high quality, engaging education that prepares them for their next steps in life.  A few words or a note of thanks would go a long way toward letting your favorite teachers know what a positive impact they've had on your life. If you'd like to share some of these kind words or a story online, don't forget to use #ThankATeacher. We love our Teachers! You ROCK and you make us Proud to be HSD!Our featured event is all about helicopters and the Hillsboro Air Show! Thanks to the partnership of the Oregon International Air Show Charitable Foundation, the Oregon National Guard, and Genentech, students across HSD have been - and will be! - treated to an unforgettable aviation experience. At press time, Glencoe and Hilhi have hosted on-site landings of a National Guard Lakota helicopter, with landings at Century and Liberty rescheduled due to weather. Students had the chance to meet with Guard members, explore the helicopter up close, and learn more about careers in aviation and public service. Thanks to a generous grant from Genentech, all HSD high school students will receive tickets to the Oregon International Air Show, May 16 through 18 at the Hillsboro Airport. In addition, all third grade HSD students will attend a STEAM-focused field trip to the Hillsboro Airport leading up to the Air Show, thanks to the OASCF and in alignment with HSD's aerospace career exploration work. Between November 16th and December 11th, 2022, more than 1,000 seeds from five different tree species traveled 270,000 miles from Earth on the Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft and orbited the moon. After the flight, moon trees were grown in eight USDA Forest Service facilities. Tamarack's seedling, a sweetgum, was grown at the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station during the 2023 growing season. The seedling was presented to the school by representatives from the Forest Service and UPS - official shippers of the Moon Trees, and partners in the effort to provide interactive engagements and educational booths about the importance of environmental conservation and tree planting at Moon Tree planting sites. Many thanks to 4th grade teacher Shannon Jones who successfully applied for the Moon Tree at Tamarack! May 6th through 12th is also National Nurse Week, and Monday, May 6th, is National Nurse Day! On this Day:  Since today is May the 4th, we should make brief welcome for fans of Star Wars that today is the unofficial “May the Fourth Be With You Day” when devotees of the intergalactic battle between good and evil cheer on Luke and Leia and Han against the evil forces of Darth Vader and the repressive empire. The challenges of the ongoing pandemic these days make a deep dive into the fantasy universe of "Star Wars" just right. And, thanks to the efforts of a devoted fan base and the movie machine behind the series alike, May 4 is just the day to do it. The day was made for a punning slogan: "May the Fourth be with you."But more importantly, when we think about all the writers, actors, producers, file crews, and creative talent who brought Star Wars what do you think is the occupation that encouraged them to follow their paths in life? Well teachers of course! So today we hope the force is strong with our teachers as we celebrate Teachers’ Appreciation Day in the midst of Teachers Appreciation Week, because just one day really doesn’t do it.  Since we always take a drive through history to start the show, let’s take a look at the origin of Teachers Appreciation Day. The Origin of Teacher Appreciation WeekTeacher Appreciation Week originated in 1953, and teachers have Eleanor Roosevelt to thank for its inception. Roosevelt convinced Congress that there needed to be a specific day on which teachers were recognized. Prior to Roosevelt going before Congress, it is believed that some states did practice, but it is unclear and unsubstantiated. The theory, however, is that either a teacher from Wisconsin or Arkansas (they aren’t sure which) wrote letters to her trying to get her to help teachers’ cause. The Arkansas theory states that Mattye Whytte Wooldridge began communicating with leaders in the education system to form a day on which teachers would be honored. She ultimately began writing letters to Eleanor Roosevelt. Roosevelt decided the cause was worthy of her attention and took it to Congress.Even with Eleanor Roosevelt taking the case to Congress and getting their help and support, it would take another 27 years for it to become an official national day. It was 1980 when the National Education Association (NEA), which was formed in 1857, joined together with the Kansas State and Indiana State Boards of Education and began to lobby Congress to have the day nationally recognized. The First National Teacher Appreciation DayNational Teacher Day was celebrated on March 7th until 1984, when it was moved to May. Behind the move was the National Parent Teacher Association and, instead of just one day, they named the entire first week of May to be Teacher Appreciation Week. The NEA followed suit the next year and held National Teacher Appreciation Day on the Tuesday of the week. There are still a few cases of oddities though. Massachusetts celebrates Teacher’s Day not on National Teacher Day, but instead on the first Sunday of June; perhaps because teachers are out for summer and therefore get to relax on their special day.Celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week in Your ClassroomThe NEA believes National Teacher Day is day to not only honor teachers but to show them that they help make lasting impressions on their students’ lives. Typical gifts range from thank you notes to small treats and gifts.Whether you want to send a small gift or a kind word, make sure to plan on letting the teachers in your life know that they are appreciated.

No Limits for Deaf Children (0:00:00) About 15% of children and teens in the United States live with hearing loss. Because of its prevalence in our communities, deaf and hearing loss awareness has increased exponentially over the past several decades. But that doesn't change the fact that school, sports, and extracurricular activities are designed for those with certain hearing abilities. And many kids with hearing loss find themselves left out resulting in lower self-esteem. Fortunately, No Limits for Deaf Children, a nonprofit organization based out of California, is helping hard-of-hearing and deaf children gain confidence and communication skills. Joining us today is their founder, Dr. Michelle Christie, to talk about their programs and the everyday experiences of deaf children.   Alzheimer's Disease (0:21:41) There are almost 50 million people worldwide suffering with Alzheimer's disease. About ten percent of that number comes from the US, with 5.5 million cases. According to the Alzheimer's Association, that number might triple in the next 30 years if we don't find a cure or method to slow down the process. With numbers like these, it's very likely you know someone with this disease or someone who is prone to it. Today, we have the Executive Director of the Utah Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, Ronnie Daniel. He is here to tell us all about Alzheimer's disease, early signs, and research.   Bread Making at Home (0:36:33) Of all of the crazy, lazy or productive things we've done in the last two months, I personally don't think you can qualify yourself as a proper “quarantiner” if you haven't tried your hand at homemade bread. Now whether you're an experienced baker or not, we can all learn something from today's guest, Peter Reinhart. Peter is an internationally renowned expert on baking, one the most popular artisan bread teachers in the country, and current Chef on Assignment at Johnson & Wales University. And he's here to teach us everything we need to know about bread making at home.   Real Leadership (0:50:40) Have you ever been under the leadership of someone who wasn't a good leader? It's not the best experience. You may find yourself micro-managed, unappreciated, or used and abused. But I think the great thing about having bad leaders is that they teach us what not to do and inspire us to be better leaders if one day we find ourselves in a similar position. But we have to start getting ready now for when that day comes. Our next guest, Al Christy, argues that real leadership needs preparation. Al was recommended to us by his daughter-in-law who emailed us at thelisashow@byu.edu, and he joins us on the show to discuss how to be a good leader. Al has held multiple leadership responsibilities throughout his life and has helped his kids and grandkids learn leadership skills.   Thriving Through the Unexpected (1:05:40) I think many of us have hit the point where we're just living in survival mode. We're just trying to make it through one day, even one hour at a time: OK, wake up, eat, school, exercise, make dinner. Whatever your routine is these days, it probably feels like you're dragging your feet one step at a time. But I think it's time we pull ourselves out of our repetitive slump. Our next guest has some great tips for thriving, not just surviving, during this unprecedented time. Ganel-Lyn Condie is a friend of the show and motivational speaker, and we're happy to have her with us today to discuss this important topic.   National Teacher Day (1:25:27) Today is National Teacher Day, and we want to give a big shout out to our teachers, because they've had to adapt big time with schools moving online across the nation. Thankfully, many of them care a lot about their students and have responded to these changes with creativity. I'm not the only one impressed by how our teachers have managed online schooling.  A new national poll found that over eighty percent of parents approve of how their children's teachers are handling the coronavirus pandemic. So, we want to show our appreciation to our teachers, and to help us come up with some ideas to do that we have Becky Pringle with us on the show.  She's the Vice President of the National Education Association.
