A lost golf ball was actually found on the moon! Back in 1971, astronaut Alan Shepard decided to take a swing while he was up there on Apollo 14. Talk about a cosmic tee-off! He used a makeshift club and sent that ball soaring into space, making history as the first person to play golf on the moon. The ball didn't just disappear into the lunar abyss—it was later spotted by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2009. So, next time you shank one into the rough, just remember, at least you're not retrieving your ball from another planet! #brightside Animation is created by Bright Side. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music from TheSoul Sound: https://thesoul-sound.com/ Listen to Bright Side on: Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/0hUkPxD... Before Yuri Gagarin, before Alan Shepard… a chimp called Ham was blasted into space for six-and-a-half minutes of weightlessness on 31st January, 1961. He successfully returned to Earth without serious physical injury, albeit over 100 miles away from NASA's intended splashdown location. Travelling at 5,857 m.p.h, Ham was seated in a special chair called a ‘biopack', which administered electric shocks to the soles of his feet if he failed to complete basic tasks in orbit. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how Ham's schooling had striking parallels with the training undertaken by human astronauts; reveal just how much of him is actually ‘buried' at the International Space Hall of Fame; and explain the fate of the SECOND chimp in space, Enos, who wasn't quite so lucky… CONTENT WARNING: animal cruelty, animal experimentation and dissection Further Reading: • Meet Ham The Chimp, The Animal Astronaut Who Changed History (All That's Interesting, 2021): https://allthatsinteresting.com/ham-the-chimp • ‘Ham the astrochimp: hero or victim?' On Wednesday's show: We recap the start of the Texas Legislative session, discuss Trump cabinet confirmation hearings, and other developments in political in our regular Wednesday roundup. Also this hour: The COVID 19 pandemic revealed the size of America's digital divide -- the gap between people who can access and use digital technology and those who can't. In the years since, have we managed to bridge that gap in Houston? And we revisit a recent conversation about a new book examining whether a particular golf ball was ever on the moon with astronaut Alan Shepard, who famously hit a couple of golf balls on the lunar surface. But, more importantly, it tells the story of the friendship between Shepard and his barber, Carlos Villagomez, to whom he gave the golf ball after returning to earth. A discussion of the book and a screening of a related documentary will be held on Saturday at the Lone Star Flight Museum.
Jerry Scott is the COO of the Lone Star Flight Museum & Director of flight operations. He introduces us to Barbara Radnofsky and Ed Supkis who are the authors of “The Astronaut, the Barber and the Golf Ball” which looks into the msytery of the third golf ball that the legendary Alan Shepard took to moon. He did it for his friend Carlos – or did he? It's an awesome NASA story full of insight into the Houston community that built NASA. Project Mercury was NASA's first attempt at human crewed space flight. It sent Alan Shepard into space, and John Glenn into orbit, among four other landmark flights over 5 years. By 1963 it was done, and NASA was ready to launch Gemini, its next project. But being such a groundbreaking project, in 1964 NASA paid tribute to Mercury with a four metre high stainless steel monument with a time capsule that would remain sealed beneath it until the year 2464, five centuries later. What was so significant about Mercury? And what's inside this time capsule? Apollo 14 launched on January 31, 1971. Five days later Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell walked on the Moon while Stuart Roosa, a former US Forest Service smoke jumper, orbited above in the command module. Packed in small containers in Roosa's personal kit were hundreds of tree seeds, part of a joint NASA/USFS project. Upon return to Earth, the seeds were germinated by the Forest Service. Known as the "Moon Trees", the resulting seedlings were planted throughout the United States and the world. NASA Space Science Data Coordinated Archive Lead Dave Williams has made it his pet project to find out what happened to the Moon Trees. You can find out more about the Moon trees on the NASA website. Steve Schmidt used to offer candidates some advice before they headed into the debate arena and it was the same words the astronaut Alan Shepard was caught saying before blasting into space: "Dear Lord, please don't let me f@#* this up." Biden should utter that prayer before Thursday's debate and he should hit Trump hard. Plus, all of Trump's endorsements lost their races this week except Lauren Boebert, who recently apologized for her sexual behavior at a "Beetlejuice" performance. What does she, Corey Lewandowski, and puppy killer Kristi Noem have in common? They all still worship the convicted felon, Donald Trump. // Literatur - Stephen Walker, Ins All: Die faszinierende Geschichte vom ersten Flug in den Weltraum. - BBC-Podcast „13 Minutes to the Moon“ Das Episodenbild zeigt den Schimpansen Ham vor seinem Flug ins Weltall am 31. Their names were publicly announced by NASA on April 9, 1959; these seven original American astronauts were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. The Mercury Seven created a new profession in the United States, and established the image of the American astronaut for decades to come. All of the Mercury Seven eventually flew in space. They piloted the six spaceflights of the Mercury program that had an astronaut on board from May 1961 to May 1963, and members of the group flew on all of the NASA human spaceflight programs of the 20th century – Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle.Shepard became the first American to enter space in 1961, and walked on the Moon on Apollo 14 in 1971. Grissom flew the first crewed Gemini mission in 1965, but died in 1967 in the Apollo 1 fire; the others all survived past retirement from service. Schirra flew Apollo 7 in 1968, the first crewed Apollo mission, in Grissom's place. Slayton, grounded with an atrial fibrillation, ultimately flew on the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project in 1975. The first American in orbit in 1962, Glenn flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998 to become, at age 77, the oldest person to fly in space at the time. Natürlich flog der Ball sehr weit, am 6. Februar 1971, als ihn der Astronaut Alan Shepard mit seinem Golfschläger richtig erwischt hatte. Er flog ja auch auf dem Mond. Den Schlägerkopf brachte Alan Shepard zurück zur Erde. Die Golfbälle jedoch liegen wohl immer noch irgendwo im Mondstaub.

“The idea was to prove at every foot of the way up that you were one of the elected and anointed ones who had the right stuff and could move higher and higher and even—ultimately, God willing, one day—that you might be able to join that special few at the very top, that elite who had the capacity to bring tears to men's eyes, the very Brotherhood of the Right Stuff itself." Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! In this episode, we're covering The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe. Through vivid storytelling, Wolfe shares the world of the fearless pilots and astronauts who possessed the elusive "right stuff". The book provides an intimate look at their lives, the challenges they faced, and the profound impact they had on the history of space exploration. We cover a wide range of topics including: The evolution of the aerospace industry and its rapid growth How fighter pilots became pioneers in space exploration Compelling stories of astronauts and their intense training regimens The battle between NASA and the Air Force in the quest for space What it truly means to have 'The Right Stuff' And much more. Please enjoy, and make sure to follow Nat, Neil, and Adil on Twitter and share your thoughts on the episode. The book not only boasts a charismatic writing style, but also draws intriguing connections to a previous book we covered, Where Is My Flying Car? (3:40) We delve into the book's narrative flow, which initially spotlights fighter pilots and their rigorous training before transitioning into the captivating realm of the U.S. space program. From the early stages to the groundbreaking Project Mercury, the book highlights the personalities behind those who ventured into the unknown. (6:07) How astronaut requirements shifted from an open-door policy to a more selective process. Plus, we talk about the advancement in computing technology that made these audacious projects possible. (10:44) What once seemed impossible in the world of space exploration became possible in a short amount of time. There was also a shift from manual to automatic controls as the technology became more advanced. (12:57) What does it mean if you possess "The Right Stuff"? As we explore its application in the world of aviation, we draw parallels to other fields, such as sports. (15:24) Buckle up for some mindblowing facts and statistics on several high-speed aircrafts, including the SR71, Concorde, and X15. (19:12) Ever wondered what it feels like to approach the speed of sound in the transonic zone? There are many complexities when it comes to operating a high-speed aircraft like the Concorde. (22:40) How political dynamics influenced the approaches taken by NASA and the Air Force, from rocket models to plane models for space exploration. (29:13) The quest for space exploration has been marked by trial and error. (31:20) While there are very few remaining opportunities for land exploration on Earth, there is exciting potential for migration to other planets. (35:52) It can take between 7-14 months to reach Mars, not to mention the many dangers you may be facing along the way. (40:30) We talk about the connection between how you breathe and weight loss, as well as the importance of consistent airflow in your work and sleep environments. (43:40) Did you know The Right Stuff is also a movie? Make sure to check it out, especially if you are intrigued with this episode! (45:13) The training regimens for many of these missions were so intense that when the astonauts were actually on the flight, they were seemingly desensitized to the whole experience. (48:55) There was often tension between fighter pilots and test pilots, as well as discussions on whether becoming an astronaut would be harmful to a pilot's military career. (55:55) That wraps up this episode! Our next episode features Cândido Rondon, who you may remember from our episode on The River of Doubt. Stay tuned for that one! A sense of humor helped the Apollo astronauts deal with the lunar darkness and utter isolation as they became the first to travel to another world.
The U.S. space program was launched, so to speak, in 1959, when the first seven Mercury astronauts were named. These pioneers laid the groundwork for the Gemini, Apollo, and space shuttle missions that would follow in coming years and decades. Among those seven was a 36-year-old test pilot named Wally Schirra. Over the next few years he would become a household name, along with those like John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, and Alan Shepard. Finally, in 1988, Schirra wrote his autobiography. And that's when I had a chance to meet him
On this episode of The Jacob Buehrer Show, I interview Laura who is the daughter of Alan Shepard the First American in Space and only human to golf on the moon. In 2021 Laura went to space on the Blue Origin New Shepard Rocket named after her dad. Listen to find out more about her mission and her father's space legacy

In Spring 1961, the Space Race between the US and Soviet Union was well underway. Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person in Space in April and the Americans knew his achievement had to be matched. Alan Shepard was chosen as the man for the job. Jay Gallentine tells Don how we went from satellites, to dogs, then humans in space; as the competition outside Earth's atmosphere intensified between the US and the USSR. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how Ham's schooling had striking parallels with the training undertaken by human astronauts; reveal just how much of him is actually ‘buried' at the International Space Hall of Fame; and explain the fate of the SECOND chimp in space, Enos, who wasn't quite so lucky… CONTENT WARNING: animal cruelty, animal experimentation and dissection Further Reading: • Meet Ham The Chimp, The Animal Astronaut Who Changed History (All That's Interesting, 2021): https://allthatsinteresting.com/ham-the-chimp • ‘Ham the astrochimp: hero or victim?' After eulogizing Alan Shepard, the first American in space, we will take a look at Apollo 15, what is often referred to as the most successful Apollo mission. It had everything - a beautiful location near lunar foothills, a rover - A CAR! - to drive around in, a memerable experiment broadcast for all the world to see, and the first every DEEP SPACE space walk. But despite this success, the end of the podcast might leave you thinking that something went terribly wrong. The Space Race series introduction music is Lift Off by kennysvoice. As always, a very special thanks to Mountain Up Cap Company for its continued help to spread the word about the podcast on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/MountainUpCapCompany Climb to Glory! For more information about the podcast visit: · The GoA website: https://www.ghostsofarlingtonpodcast.com · Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ghostsofarlingtonpodcast· Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArlingtonGhosts· Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ghostsofarlington/
TVC 595.4: From October 2010: Actor Ron Masak (Murder, She Wrote, Ice Station Zebra, Harper Valley PTA, Second Effort) talks to Ed about the one-man show about Mark Twain that he wrote and starred in; his passion for baseball, including how Ron was offered a contract to play for the Chicago White Sox after being scouted by Major League Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby; and working with Patrick McGoohan in both Ice Station Zebra and Columbo. At the time we spoke to Ron, he had just released his memoirs, I've Met All My Heroes from A to Z, a heartfelt tribute to some of the many people from all walks of life that Ron met in his career who had an impact not only on his life, but the world in general—people such as Neil Armstrong, Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, Roy Campanella, Joe DiMaggio, Rock Hudson, Cary Grant, Audie Murphy, Angela Lansbury, Elvis Presley, Alan Shepard, John Wayne, NFL Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi, legendary Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, country western artist Garth Brooks, and General Norman Schwartzkopf.
