Doing hard things with friends is fun and even when you lose, you win. In 2014 I took second at Unbound 100 and superstar creator and now BJJ black belt @blakeoftoday took third. This episode originally dropped in 2019. I skipped the weddings of several close friends and trained 20+ hours many weeks for months to prepare for this event. When we did the race and when we originally recorded this episode it kind bummed me out that I didn't win the race in 2014 or in 2015 when I went back and got second again with a side of food poisoning that left me unable to hold down food for a week after the race. Now I'm just grateful for the memories I have of training for and competing in this brutal event with Blake and for everything that happened along the way. With Unbound coming up this weekend, I wanted to drop this episode again for anyone who is new to the show and anyone has an interest in Unbound. This may be difficult to imagine, but 2014 was a time when there were zero tubeless gravel tires on the market and I ran 50 psi in tubed Clement MSOs and lived. A lot has changed since then and a lot has changed since I created Choose the Hard Way. When I started this project in 2017, I thought the point was to share lessons learned at the limits of human experience. Over time I've realized people, including me, forget most of the specific details that they hear on podcasts--but they almost always remember how podcasts make them feel. And at their best, the stories we hear on great podcasts motivate and inspire us to take action and be more present in other areas of our lives. This episode is brought to you by The Better Lab. Sleep is the greatest performance enhancer on the planet and the science to improve sleep is straightforward. Putting it into action on your own can be challenging. That's why I co-founded The Better Lab to help guide active people like you to mindfully build conscious, science-backed practices to sleep better that stick. We're an early stage startup and right now the Better Lab app is free in the Apple App store. You can find the link in the show notes. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/better-lab/id6479452885 Check it out and as an early user, we want to hear your feedback to help us continually improve the product. Shoutout to Hard Way listeners Chris Scott, Jeffrey Nebolini, Shannon Jones and many others who have been using the app to get better sleep and sharing their feedback with us. Thank you! May 6th through 10th is National Teacher Appreciation Week, and Tuesday, May 7th, is National Teacher Day! All year long, but especially this week, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the amazing teachers who give their best every day to ensure students receive a high quality, engaging education that prepares them for their next steps in life. A few words or a note of thanks would go a long way toward letting your favorite teachers know what a positive impact they've had on your life. If you'd like to share some of these kind words or a story online, don't forget to use the hashtag #ThankATeacher. Thank you, Teachers! You ROCK and you make us Proud to be HSD! Our featured event is the Moon Tree planting that took place on Friday, April 26th, at Tamarack Elementary School! Between November 16th and December 11th, 2022, more than 1,000 seeds from five different tree species traveled 270,000 miles from Earth on the Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft and orbited the moon. After the flight, moon trees were grown in eight USDA Forest Service facilities. Tamarack's seedling, a sweetgum, was grown at the USDA Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station during the 2023 growing season. The seedling was presented to the school by representatives from the Forest Service and UPS - official shippers of the Moon Trees, and partners in the effort to provide interactive engagements and educational booths about the importance of environmental conservation and tree planting at Moon Tree planting sites. Many thanks to 4th grade teacher Shannon Jones who successfully applied for the Moon Tree at Tamarack! May 6th through 12th is also National Nurse Week, and Monday, May 6th, is National Nurse Day! We are so grateful to our dedicated team of District Nurses for providing expert voice for optimal, equitable student health. And we are so proud of our Lead District Nurse, Tracy Evers-Selleck, for being named Oregon's School Nurse of the Year for 2024! Way to go, Tracy! Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. Please also bookmark our district website: hsd.k12.or.us to stay informed about what's happening in our district and schools.

Last fall, Daytona State cross country runner and mom, Shannon Jones, earned her third All-American title…at age 37! In this episode, Shannon details her untraditional journey from couch to college athlete, including how becoming a mom transformed her from a sedentary smoker to the most decorated cross country runner in Daytona State history. Shannon bravely shared why she quit athletics after high school and how she crawled her way back to running nearly two decades later, resulting in countless medals and a college degree. Shannon's story is a powerful reminder that the path to success is full of challenges, but those challenges do not define us. Huge thanks to Shannon for joining us. Summary Welcome to another great episode of the Startup Junkie Podcast! In this live recorded special episode, hosts Jeff Amerine and Caleb Talley join Amy Herzberg and Bob Ford, the co-founders of TheatreSquared (T2), and Shannon Jones, the executive director, on the set of A Christmas Carol for a captivating discussion about TheatreSquared's origin and mission. Since its founding in 2005, TheatreSquared's locally produced and nationally acclaimed productions have remained rooted in its founding vision that “theatre done well and with passion can transform lives and communities.” Throughout the episode, Amy, Bob, and Shannon share how TheatreSquared has impacted Arkansas's artistic landscape and how its reputation continues to blossom in the performing arts world. Show Notes (1:45) Introduction to Bob Ford and Amy Herzberg (2:23) TheatreSquared's Origin Story (15:59) TheatreSquared's Impact on Arkansas's Artistic Landscape (19:53) Attracting Talent from the University of Arkansas (26:29) Introduction to Shannon Jones (33:29) Catering To New Audiences (36:37) How TheatreSquared Approaches Innovation (40:37) Measuring TheatreSquared's Success (44:32) Questions from the Audience (52:54) Advice to Younger Self (56:09) Closing Question and Thoughts Links Jeff Amerine Caleb Talley Bob Ford Amy Herzberg Shannon Jones TheatreSquared Quotes “Having this theatre [in Northwest Arkansas] makes a real statement about how the arts are valued in this area, and that means a lot to people who are coming from all over the place to study at the University of Arkansas in its theatre department.” - Amy Herzberg, (20:05) “I think one of the things that theatre does really well is it touches lives. Like you said, in our mission, it transforms communities. And the thing about T2 and the thing I think that we do really well, and I think we'll continue to expand upon, is making that human connection. And I think one thing that we use to help build upon what is already there is our ability to adapt.” - Shannon Jones, (33:52) “When I see a young person say, ‘I've never seen me and my friends on stage before, I've never seen my story before. Thank you.' That's how I measure [success]. That's what keeps me going, that to me is impact. We could fill this place, I guarantee, if we put on certain shows over and over again, and that would also look like a certain kind of success. But our goal is to do both because what we're discovering is that our community wants to see a full range of stories because, as we know, everybody's different, but also everybody's the same. But that's an amazing kind of conundrum.” - Bob Ford, (41:19)

Hi and welcome to the OWN IT podcast, where we celebrate the growing number of (women and non-binary) ad agency owners and talk about buying out of the boys' club of advertising, one agency at a time. On this episode, we're talking to two amazing female owners … Yadira Harrison and Shannon Jones of Verb. Both came into the agency world from the entertainment segment. Yadira even worked on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The two met working at an agency on the AirBnB business. We talked about the organic way they evolved to ownership, the early and often challenging conversations about revenue and bootstrapping, and the building blocks of Verb from its launch to now. One thing that stood out you should listen for is something Yadira said … there's a difference in working in the business, versus working on the business. So very true. The energy and chemistry these two bring to the table is enviable. We learned so much. We know you will, too.
