THE SEVEN Seven souls. One final chance for humanity. In a divine test that will determine mankind's fate, seven individuals from across the globe are chosen to represent humanity. Their judges? Not God, not angels, but the creatures who have served mankind since the dawn of civilization - horses. These majestic beings have carried humans through history, and now they must decide if humanity deserves to continue its journey. This profound tale explores the deep connection between humans and animals, the choices that define us, and the ultimate question: Has humanity strayed too far from its purpose to be saved? "The Seven" is a powerful story of redemption, second chances, and the extraordinary bond between humans and the creatures who know our hearts better than we know ourselves.   ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alison Gieschen is an award-winning author, lifelong sailor, and horsewoman whose life story is as epic as the novels she writes. A former schoolteacher and graduate of the University of North Carolina Charlotte, Alison spent 30 years running an internationally successful equestrian program on her family farm in New Jersey. After raising three children with her husband Dan—whom she met during a sailboat race—they sold everything they owned to pursue their shared dream of circumnavigating the globe aboard their 43-foot sailboat. To date, Alison and Dan have traveled to 46 countries and recently crossed the Panama Canal, setting their course for the remote islands of French Polynesia. Her time at sea and her deep connection with both horses and people across cultures have inspired a powerful body of work spanning children's literature, memoir, and adult fiction. Her books include the Rising Star Award-winning novel Blue Ridge, the magical children's stories The Legend of Altor and Julia's Vaulting Dream, and the nonfiction sailing memoir Riding the Waves of Reality: Tales of Turmoil and Triumph—with a sequel on the way. Her latest release, The Seven, is a sweeping and soul-stirring novel that blends fantasy with deeply rooted real-world experience. The story follows seven humans and seven horses in a tale that spans continents and cultures, asking one pivotal question: Can the hearts of a few determine the fate of all humanity? Alison is also preparing to release her newest children's fantasy, Seanna: A Mermaid's Tale—a story especially close to her heart. As someone who has always felt a magical connection to the sea and its mythical creatures, Alison brings the underwater world to life in this early reader chapter book. The story is being brought to even greater life through the artwork of seven-time international award-winning illustrator Barbara Owczarek, whose stunning illustrations add an extra layer of magic and wonder. Through it all, Alison remains deeply connected to the world around her—from the sea life off her bow to the ancient cultures in the world's most remote places. Her journey is far from over, and with every mile sailed, a new story is waiting to be told. Learn more at https://alisongieschen.com. TOPICS OF CONVERSATION Origins of the Story – The Seven was inspired by a vivid dream involving horses that Alison couldn't shake. Role of Horses as Moral Judges – Horses serve as spiritual mirrors and judges because of their innate ability to sense authenticity and emotion. Character Development and Diversity – Each character is based on real-life experiences and represents different cultures, showing humanity's shared struggles. Emotional and Ethical Complexity – The book explores gray areas of morality, where judgment isn't black and white, especially in the human-horse confrontations. Themes of Disconnection and Hope – The story critiques modern disconnection while offering a message of hope, transformation, and reconnection with what truly matters. CONNECT WITH ALISON GIESCHEN! Creating a Person-Centered Library: Best Practices for Supporting High-Needs Patrons (Bloomsbury, 2023) provides a comprehensive overview of various services, programs, and collaborations to help libraries serve high-needs patrons as well as strategies for supporting staff working with these individuals. While public libraries are struggling to address growing numbers of high-needs patrons experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, mental health problems, substance abuse, and poverty-related needs, this book will help librarians build or contribute to library services that will best address patrons' psychosocial needs. Beth Wahler and Sarah C. Johnson, experienced in both library and social work, begin by providing an overview of patrons' psychosocial needs, structural and societal reasons for the shift in these needs, and how these changes impact libraries and library staff. Chapters focus on best practices for libraries providing person-centered services and share lessons learned, including information about special considerations for certain patron populations that might be served by individual libraries. The book concludes with information about how library organizations can support public library staff. In this episode, Co-host Diane Little and Dr. Rita interview Robert Dawkins political director and organizer and Robert Dawkins of Action NC. Robert sheds tremendous insight on why the solutions we find to social issues seem to always miss the mark: there is the disconnect between people in communities, academics, donors, and legislators that results in ineffective solutions birthed from bad research. In a refreshing conversation about real lives, data, and laws, Robert puts in lay terms the importance of trauma-informed research (stop asking us to tell the same traumatizing stories), the importance of lived experience (no parachuting researchers and donors), and mixed-method approaches (we need experiences and stories). He also offers up the disconnect that many Black men feel with the Democratic party: its fixation on incarceration alienates everyday Black men who would like to focus on something else. Our political moment: Robert also shares some of the good things about Preemption and Dillon law--State standards that are generally wielded by conservatives to constrain progressive cities but that have some perks for progressives as well. Robert Dawkins is the founder & State Organizer for SAFE Coalition NC which is a project of Action NC and made up of over 15 community-based advocacy groups working to end discriminatory profiling and promote civil liberty protections for all North Carolina residents. Before starting SAFE Coalition NC, Robert worked for 7 year with Democracy North Carolina as the Western NC Field Organizer where his work centered on organizing communities of color on the issues of voter rights, voter access and ending voter disenfranchisement.  Robert was the Head Organizer for the Charlotte chapter of ACORN for 3 years where he worked in low to moderate income neighborhoods building neighborhood capacity, neighborhood power and on leadership development. Robert has a B.A in Political Science from the University of South Carolina and a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Doing Divorce Different A Podcast Guide to Doing Divorce Differently

Today I am joined by Kim Best, a nurse turned divorce mediator in Tennessee. Kim walks us through how she got into mediation and what opportunities she sees through mediation. She focuses on the opportunity and the positive ways to handle conflict and divorce vs. feeling regret years later. Kim talks with us about how our difficult circumstances impact our legacy and some of the great examples she has gotten to be a part of with mediation. This episode is full of juicy nuggets and great takeaways, so make sure to tune in! In this episode: [3:07] How did Kim get to where she is today? [10:04] What are the benefits of mediation? [13:56] What does Kim see as uses for mediation? [15:52] How do these moments create our legacy? [17:58] Kim gives some examples of good divorces she has witnessed. Key Takeaways: Mediation can be the difference between hope and regret. You can choose to look back and be proud of how you handled the divorce, or you can look back and regret how things happened. Mediation isn't just for divorce. Mediation can be used for family issues, such as for elderly parents or other things going on where you need a mediator in the room. You can't control the outcome of what the other person does, but you can control who you're going to be during the process, and nobody can take that choice away from you. Quotes: “We are all never so narcissistic as when we're in pain. Because when we're in pain, it's all about us, and it's all about protecting us, even when we don't know we need protected. Biologically our brains and bodies don't know the difference between an insult and someone holding a gun to our head; both of those actions feel like life-threatening.” - Kim Best “Good people have terrible moments because we're people. We're more than our worst moment.” - Kim Best Guest Bio: Kimberly Best RN, MA is a TN Rule 31 listed Civil mediator and a TN Rule 31 trained Family Mediator, owner of Best Conflict Solutions (http://www.bestconflictsolutions.com ) focusing on Collaborative Problem Solving in Healthcare, Small Business Mediation and Conflict Management, Organizational Conflict, Elder Mediation, Family and Relationship Mediation, Dialogue Facilitation, and Conflict Coaching. Episode Description: Jolts can derail us - or they can propel us into reclaiming and remaking our lives. They prompt us to ask questions about our values and purpose.Psychologists have been studying this phenomenon for some time; one research team at the University of North Carolina Charlotte back in the mid-1990s named the phenomenon "post-traumatic growth" (PTG). Since then, PTG has emerged as an important field of study for psychologists and social scientists.Jolt explores a range of PTG experiences - -the death of a child, life-threatening illness, plane crashes, terror attacks, natural disasters - and also a wide range of growth responses. In this episode, you will discover:What is the process of change that trauma survivors experience as they grow? What does the process of change look like from the inside for jolt survivors? What is the role of spirituality and faith? Who is most likely to experience growth after trauma - and who is not? And, what is the meaning of these stories of trauma and growth for the rest of us?About Mark Miller:For over a decade, Mark Miller has researched and written about what motivates people to reinvent their lives. He is a nationally recognized expert on retirement and aging; he writes a column for Reuters and contributes to The New York Times and other national news outlets. Mark is the author of Jolt: Stories of Trauma and Transformation, which tells the stories of people transformed by growth following trauma, and the new paths they pursue. Everyone needs second chances. The golf analogy is a wonderful example of what God gives us a mulligan through Christ, to get back into a life with him as our Lord. But, it doesn't stop there, Christ covers all of our needs for multiple mulligans until we are reunited with him. So…After a successful nationwide theatrical release, Cinedigm tees up the faith and family film The Mulligan with an August 16 release date for On Demand, Digital and DVD. The powerful film about second chances stars Eric Close (American Sniper, Nashville), Pat Boone (A Cowgirl's Story, God's Not Dead 2) and Tanya Christiansen (I Still Believe, The Hate U Give). Outwardly, Paul (Close) has everything that he could possibly want. He's a successful businessman, motivational speaker and superstar on the golf course. But behind the persona, his world has fallen apart and his estrangement from his family has left him desperate to find anything to fill the void. When he gets teamed up with an old golf pro (Boone), Paul begins to realize that there is still time to set his world right…there's still time for a mulligan. Directed by Michael O. Sajbel (The Ultimate Gift, The Ride) the film reflects on the idea that having everything isn't everything and that the game of golf and the game of life have a lot in common. From taking the good shots with the bad, to knowing when to chip it and knowing when to rip it, we all look back at things we could have done differently. Co-written by Randall Eldridge, Rick Eldridge (The Ultimate Gift, Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius), Roland Eldridge and Jimmy Hager the film is based on the 2016 novel “The Mulligan: A Parable of Second Chances” by Blanchard and Armstrong. The film also stars Andrew Brodeur (Tall Girl, MacGyver), Charmin Lee (Westworld, The 5th Wave) and Debra Stipe (Full House, Father Figures), with guest appearances by PGA Professional Tom Leyman and Broadcasting legend Jim Nantz. The Mulligan was produced by Scotty Curlee, Eldridge and Stephan Schultze, with Eldridge also acting as Executive Producer. The inspiration for the film came from the early life of co-author PGA touring pro Wally Armstrong, who, like Paul, was mentored by a club pro at his hometown golf course. Originally an idea for a children's book, Armstrong and Blanchard created a deep and meaningful novel that has been enjoyed by young and old, where golf is more than just a game and second chances are never out of reach. “When I read this transformational book by Ken (Blanchard) and Wally (Armstrong), I immediately identified with it. As a husband, businessman and father, it can become difficult to give each role its respective place. Sometimes we stumble and we all need ‘second chances.' Add in being a life-long lover of the game of golf, the book really hit home for me. It has been an incredible experience telling the story of The Mulligan,” says Eldridge. Most Alcott scholars cannot imagine what it would be like to do research without the Selected Letters and Selected Journals of Louisa May Alcott, these two seminal works that make Alcott's work so accessible.Dr. Daniel Shealy, however, knows exactly what it's like--because he was part of the team that edited these two publications, bringing together hundreds of letters from around the country and compiling them into the legible, useful edition that Alcott scholars depend on for their work. This is the work that has enabled other professors, writers, and filmmakers to shift their perception of Louisa May Alcott, from the famed children's writer to a more serious, scholarly study.Daniel Shealy shares his experiences working with Joel Myerson, Madeleine Stern, and Leona Rostenberg, giving us a glimpse into the early days of Alcott scholarship. We discuss Louisa's changing legacy over the years, and Daniel even gives his opinion on Little Women films.Daniel Shealy is Professor of English at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he teaches American literature.  He has published thirteen books on Louisa May Alcott, including co-editing Alcott's Selected Letters and Journals.   He also edited Little Women Abroad: The Alcott Sisters' Letters from Europe, 1870-71, which recounts May Alcott's first journey to Europe.  His most recent book is Little Women at 150.
