Her stories and essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Paris Review, Prairie Schooner, the Wall Street Journal, and Real Simple, and have received many honors, including Distinguished Story by the Best American Short Stories. Louisa Meets Bear received Starred Reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist and an “A” from Entertainment Weekly, and was chosen as a “Fresh Pick” for book clubs by Oprah.com, the Long List for The Story Prize, and a Finalist for The 2016 Paterson Fiction Prize. The Peacock Feast was proclaimed “truly mighty” by Newsday, a “glorious chronicle” by the BBC, a “perfect novel” by the New Jersey Star-Ledger, and a “masterpiece” by Writers on Writing. Lauded by Rebecca Makkai as “Exactly the book I needed,” Meg Wolitzer described it as “One of those rare books that feel both grand and intimate.” Lisa Gornick earned a doctorate in clinical psychology at Yale and is a graduate of the writing program at NYU and the psychoanalytic training program at Columbia, where she is on the faculty. For many years, she worked in clinics, hospitals, and private practice as a psychotherapist, a profession she has depicted in various essays as based on “sacred trust.” She lives in New York City with her family.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. We speak to Dani Mendoza DellaGiustina, the deputy principal investigator for the mission. Then, the American Library Association has dubbed next week, Oct. 1 through Oct. 7, as Banned Book Week, a time to celebrate reading and fight censorship. One author targeted by book banning is Pulitzer Prize winner Art Spiegelman, who wrote the graphic novel "Maus" as a memoir of his family's experiences during the time of Nazi Germany. Spiegelman talks about the potent irony of having a book about the rise of the Nazis being banned.
“We don't need weapons of war on our streets.”“We need to ban assault rifles.” “We need universal background checks.” “America's gun culture is killing our children.”As part of my reporting on the subject of guns in America, I've interviewed folks who voiced these above narratives – people who believe that more gun regulations are necessary to combat the violence in our streets, and that we need to legislate a nationwide ban on assault rifles. I've also talked with folks who believe that “it's the person behind the weapon, not the weapon itself” that's the problem. And that banning assault rifles is analogous to outlawing a Corvette to combat drunk driving. And both have a point. In today's episode, I sat down with two gun enthusiasts who shared their expertise on the subject of firearms legislation and why attempting to ban assault rifles is not in the best interest of our country. And after hearing them out, I now believe that we're closer to a remedy than our current cultural and political divide would have us believe.Watch Episode:Kevin Ryan is the CEO and founder of Motivity Marketing, Inc and a bestselling author.
