Send us a textMeet Erin Mahoney, a trailblazing entrepreneur who's redefining what it means to be a female business owner in the historically male-dominated roofing industry. As founder of The RoofHer in Columbus, Ohio, Erin's journey from addiction to successful business ownership offers a powerful blueprint for resilience and determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.Throughout our conversation, Erin candidly shares the challenges she's encountered as one of the mere 4.6% of women in the roofing field. Rather than letting gender bias defeat her, she turned knowledge into her superpower, pursuing extensive training and mastering hands-on skills that many of her male counterparts lacked. "I had to know way more than the boys had to know," she explains, revealing how she transformed potential disadvantages into her competitive edge. What truly sets Erin's story apart is how she navigated the darker chapters of her entrepreneurial journey. When a former employer registered her trademarked business name to block her progress, Erin found herself at a crossroads – retaliate or respond with grace. Drawing on principles learned through four years of sobriety and recovery, she chose the harder but ultimately more powerful path forward. "I know there's no peace in retaliation," she reflects, "but I also know I have a voice for a reason, and I'm done being silenced."The parallels between Erin's recovery journey and her business challenges reveal profound insights about personal transformation. Her description of rebuilding herself after addiction resonates universally: "When you feel like you're just broken and all the pieces are laying on the ground... the cool part is you get to pick them up and form them into a foundational structure that is not breakable, and you can leave pieces on the ground that don't serve you anymore."Erin's story isn't just about roofing – it's about finding purpose through adversity, transforming trauma into strength, and creating space for authenticity in environments that resist change. Her pink truck isn't just a marketing gimmick; it's a bold statement about claiming space in an industry that wasn't designed for women, yet desperately needs their perspective and talent.Ready to be inspired by raw honesty and unwavering determination? Listen to Erin's full story and discover what happens when recovery principles meet entrepreneurial spirit – creating a foundation stronger than any roof she's ever built. Send Katie a Text Message!! You've likely seen this scenario play out—a homeowner has an idea for their remodel, the GC calls it stupid, and while he has a point, the homeowner's feelings are hurt and no one's offered a viable solution. That is precisely where we come in. As interior designers, we are uniquely able to translate our clients' ideas to the construction crew who can bring it to life. But there's even more that's at play when you're a female designer on the construction site. Renée Biery joins me for a conversation about navigating being the only woman on a construction site. She's a construction expert who regularly shares her knowledge with interior designers. In today's episode, Renée shares misconceptions around managing construction projects, the best approach to earn respect on a job site as a woman, and how client retention rates are impacted by project management. As always, there's even more in the Coaching Corner for you!Grab all the links and resources mentioned in this episode at https://successbydesign.coach/podcast/b/the-only-woman-on-a-construction-site

In this episode of Grit, Grace, and Glitz, host Erika celebrates Women in Construction Week, sharing her personal journey as a civil engineer in a male-dominated industry. Erika reflects on her 22-year career, starting as a fresh graduate from Villanova University, stepping onto her first job site with uncertainty but determination.Erika emphasizes the importance of allyship, mentorship, and lifting others in the industry. She highlights the challenges women face in construction, where only 10% of workers are women, and just 4% are in field roles - and she also highlights the support she's received from male mentors and colleagues.Using personal protective equipment (PPE) as a metaphor, she breaks down key leadership lessons:Boots → Grounding oneself in awareness and challenging biases.Vest → Investing in talent and supporting others.Safety Glasses → Strengthening teams through clarity and psychological safety.Hard Hat → Bringing energy and leadership to every space.Erika's message is one of empowerment, resilience, and breaking barriers. She encourages listeners—whether in construction or any industry—to “lace up their boots, put on their hard hat, and rise.” Erika truly believes that with continued efforts, the percentage of women in construction will grow, and diversity in leadership will strengthen industries. The future is bright!

ARCHITECTING Podcast - Career + Lifestyle Mentoring for Architects looking to move beyond overwhelm and make a difference thr

According to a recent Jobsite survey respect is the number one issue named by women in the construction industry with most explaining that lack of respect shows up as not being heard. If you are in or adjacent to the AEC industry, and you are a woman, you can probably relate. Let's stop being available for this tired trope. When disrespect becomes a pattern, you can start to  assume negative intentions and carry a lot of anger and resentment around. Feeling unheard either leads you to withdraw or be more aggressive. That aggressiveness then gets labeled as being too emotional, drowning out the substance of what you are saying in a tired narrative. Engage your audience by asking questions and providing information cliffhangers. Invite others to share their thoughts about what you said so that they process it in the moment. Accept that as a leader, you need to be clear and take those that resonate along with you. Leave behind those that don't.
