Failure means a lack of success; it does not mean that you will never be successful. In this episode, I share my top three tips for navigating failure as a lightworker. Most businesses fail within the first 5 years. I say, the businesses that don't fail have failed hundreds of times in those 5 years as they were getting to the point of success. During my time as an entrepreneur, I have failed a lot - I share some of those failures with you in this episode. I also share how I shifted my mindset around failure and grew through the failures I experienced. I hope that you fail, because if you don't fail, it means you aren't trying anything new. This episode was originally an IG Live from my Impact Chat series. Inside This Episode: 1:51 What is failure? 4:13 Reframing your mindset around what failure means about you 5:39 Some examples of how I have failed as an entrepreneur over the years 8:40 Taking responsibility for what you did and did not do when you experience failure 9:51 Learning the lesson behind the failure 11:07 Using failure as an opportunity to do better next time 12:44 Polling your audience to find out what they need - avoiding failure Resources: Missed my last episode? SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS: ADVICE FROM ALICIA TOMLINSON: DO GOOD WORK: Alicia was very clear on this. It does not matter how well you market or how much people like you. If you do not make a good product, people are not going to buy it. Alicia was careful to say that she does not strive for perfection, because that is unreachable. But, she does strive for "excellence!" DEVOTE THE TIME: Alicia talked about her late nights at Kinko's, printing out materials at 1 or 2am. You have to put the time in up front, to reach the point where it all pays off in the long term. BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT ALICIA TOMLINSON HAS RECEIVED: FAIL: I thought a lot about what Alicia said here. Originally she told me that you should not be afraid to fail. I changed it to just "Fail." Everyone is going to fail in some way or another along an entrepreneurial venture. So, go fail! You are not going to figure things out until you see what does not work. You can can call this a failure. But you can also call it a learning experience. Go get it over with. PERSONAL HABIT THAT ADS TO ALICIA TOMLINSON'S SUCCESS: DISCIPLINE: Alicia is very disciplined. She works when she is supposed to work. She adheres to her deadlines. This has been one of my learning curves as I have entered entrepreneurship. Being disciplined with my time is one of the skills that I had to acquire. If you are not already disciplined, you will too. LINKS RECOMMENDATIONS FROM ALICIA TOMLINSON: Link to apply for Federal EIN: LINK Shopify makes it easy to open an online store by providing all the tools and help you need. Click here to try it for free! BOOK RECOMMENDATION: Alicia had three book recommendations. All of them deal with concepts that will encourage you to keep moving forward as an entrepreneur. Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion is a great book that I read early on in my journey. I need to go back and read it again. Alicia points out that Gary V. makes it clear that no matter what your interest is, when you become the go to resource on this niche, you can "crush it!" The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated) is another great book that Alicia recommended. I have read this one as well. This book is all about doing the work up front, so you can reap the rewards later. Neither Alicia nor I are anywhere close to working only 4 hours in a week. But, if a week comes along that we only want to put in 4 hours, we can! Three Feet from Gold: Turn Your Obstacles in Opportunities (Think and Grow Rich) is a book that I have not read yet, but I have heard the story. Alicia liked to use this book to inspire her students, but it is definitely the right message for any entrepreneur. Don't stop! You might only be "three feet from gold!" Jesse Tevelow grew up in a small suburb outside of Washington DC. After surviving the public schooling system, he attended the University of Michigan, graduating four years later with a heap of debt and a flimsy certificate saying he wasn't dumb. Life after college was painfully dull. Two years after graduation, he was bored to death, working at a consulting firm in New York City. So, he quit his job and co-founded a startup, which went on to generate millions of dollars. he worked there for seven years, but he was eventually fired for being (admittedly) combative and generally useless. Battling intense fear and self-doubt, I picked myself back up again and decided to write this book. Writing The Connection Algorithm has been an incredible journey for Jesse. Without a publisher, an editor, or a marketing budget, he somehow still managed to write a book that consistently ranks among the top business books on Amazon. It has reached a #1 ranking in Entrepreneurship, Management, Knowledge Capital, and Personal Success, ranking as high as #867 out of roughly 12 million books available. That means his book is in the top 0.01%, ranking higher than 99.99% of all other books. He never could have imagined this outcome. The irony is that it perfectly supports my book's message: that taking great risks introduces the possibility of great success, regardless of your resources or background. http://www.jaymagpantay.com/ () Jay Magpantay is a classic case of a serial entrepreneur. The man is extremely busy, always juggling several projects at a time. He’s the founder of EZDSIT, a clothing company that became well known and respected in the Paradise Hills community. He teaches individuals and businesses how to take their businesses online as an online business trainer. And he is Co-Founder of Live Young & Retire, a collective of individuals dedicated to living a life of freedom. STRATEGIES USED TO FUND BUSINESS I was very fortunate to be able to self-fund my own project and my passions. When I was in the Navy as a kid without a family, without a wife and kids, without a home to pay for, you get to save a lot of money, especially when you are out overseas not spending it. FOUNDERS I was a bit of an artist, and my very first business was putting my designs on clothing. I was out at sea and doodling on my black book, and thought why I should just put this on t-shirts and sell it. So I kind of just did this on my own. WORST ENTREPRENEURIAL MOMENT I did a lot of the work myself. Once the business took off, it took me away from what I was best at, which was building customer relationships and making sales. Because of that, the steady flow of incoming customer and sales declined and I eventually had to close up shop. It was a scary thing to hire someone full-time, especially when starting out. So the lesson I learned from that is to not do everything on your own. A good entrepreneur leverages other people. HUGE SUCCESS I’ve built my business from my backyard to this big industrial workspace in Santee, CA. Looking back, I still look at the previous clients I’ve worked with and the relationships I’ve built with them over the past two years. SUPERPOWER It would have to be crazy determination. I’ve had my fair share of failures. I take the hits and I keep coming. If I’m not the best at one particular thing, then I’ll find a way to make it work or find the person that does know, and I’ll hire them. KRYPTONITE When it comes to business, my weakness is accounting. I took a couple of courses in accounting and it required a high level of concentration just to understand the material. Your financial statements will give you a report on how you’re doing, and the only way to do that is if you know your numbers. IF YOU CAN HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER… If I can fly, I’d be happy. Be specific. When you write them down, it changes from dreams into actual goals. Put these goals into somewhere where you can see them. When you see your goals, your mind sees it and obsesses over it to get it done. https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/ewrheadshot3closer-300x300.jpg ()Many of us have a dream of starting our own firm. Others of us have already taken the plunge and launched. The first question, after we make that fateful decision is, How do we find work? “How do we get noticed by the clients with whom we want to work?” This week's guest on the EntreArchitect Podcast has some answers for us. He's a residential architect based on the eastern coast of the United States, way up north in Maine on an Island called Mt. Dessert and he has developed and tested some very interesting ways to get noticed and fill his boards with the high end residential projects that we all want to design. This week on the EntreArchitect Podcast, we are speaking with architect Eric Reinholdt of 30X40 Design Workshop and author of the new book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1511750170/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1511750170&linkCode=as2&tag=entrearchitect-20&linkId=MSKAXIAGUD7ENZCP (Architect and Entrepreneur: A Field Guide to Building, Branding, and Marketing Your Startup Design Practice).
