Dave Tucker is a university VP, attorney, guitarist, and an all around music obsessive. I love discovering new music, but Dave takes it to another level, and the breadth of his interests is on display every year in the year-end compilation he produces, featuring his favorite tracks across rock, roots, R&B, jazz, classical, and other genres. I thought it would be fun to have Dave on the podcast and to discuss selections from his 2020 compilation. I submitted a few favorites of my own. (Note: Dave’s mother, music professor Linda Tucker, passed away in 2020, and he dedicated his 2020 compilation to her memory.)
The podcast celebrates its first year with some never-before released "test audio" and discuss the evolution of the 'pod over the last 365. NOTE: Dave and Jason also discuss a recent tragedy befalling the Murray family with the loss of their home to wildfire. The mentioned crowdfund can be found here: http://gf.me/u/yuijr8
Note: Dave's internet provider went on the fritz throughout this episode and eventually he just lost all contact and Jim finished solo. He did a great job and as the old saying goes, "The Show Must Go On." The crew hunker down in their isolated chambers but still manage to watch 1970's "Equinox", a low - budget movie that brought us special effects wizards Dennis Muren, Dave Allen and Jim Danforth. It also brought us Frank Bonner, the man who played Herb on "WKRP in Cincinnati." What's there not to love????Mary and Scott foolishly allow Dave to create another cocktail - guess what? This one ALSO has a hint of anise flavor in it. Surprised? The Equinox cocktail3 ounces Calvados (French apple brandy)1 1/2 ounces fresh lemon juice, from about 2 lemons1 1/2 ounces spiced syrup - see below.2 dashes Angostura bittersGarnish: 2 lemon twistsFor the cocktail: fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Calvados, lemon juice, spiced syrup, and bitters into shaker and shake until well chilled, about 15 seconds. Strain into two cocktail glasses, dividing evenly. Garnish each glass with a lemon twist. For the spiced syrup: Measure the water and sugar into a pot and stir together. Add cloves, star anise, and cinnamon sticks. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves completely. Reduce heat and let simmer 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour into a sealable container and refrigerate for 24 hours. Finely strain and use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.Note - Dave used ready made mulling spices instead of cloves, star anise and cinnamon sticks, as the ingredients were all there. This recipe was taken from the Serious Eats website - "Kevin Martin's Equinox has become a favorite at Boston's Eastern Standard—it offers an autumnal twist on the classic sour. With apple-based Calvados, a savory spiced syrup, and that lemony kick, it's sure to be a home standard, too."

Dave Oster, Ricky Widmer, and Mark Weber get HYPED for the reveal of Borderlands 3! (Note: Dave may or may not have lost his mind. ;) )(Recorded on: March 28th, 2019)
We've been busy at Spoilerpiece! After doing a not-so-deep dive into the power of cocaine in 1980s rap-rock fusions, Evan, Kris, and Dave get down to what they saw this week. First is Dave with Ricky Gervais’ Netflix series “After Life” (2:32). (Note: Dave makes reference to Mel Gibson’s THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST at about the 11:30 mark, but mistakenly calls it THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST which is Martin Scorsese’s hot take on whether Jesus was a hippie.) At 15:47, Evan covers SURVIVING R. KELLY and LEAVING NEVERLAND, two documentaries about accusations of abuse by R. Kelly (the answer’s in the title) and Michael Jackson. We’re not really a podcast for trigger warnings, but it’s heavy, heavy stuff. Lastly, Kris talks about BORDER (36:30), a Swedish movie about a customs agent who can smell fear, and that’s just the beginning. To end things, the guys have a quick discussion about how to tell non-critics whether to see a particular film (45:40).
Yes, they are related. Our business-as-usual response to Hurricane Florence last month starts the conversation. (This episode was recorded before Hurricane Michael devastated the Florida panhandle.) Grace and Dave do also share some good news: climate change is getting more attention (of course the recent IPCC report has turned that volume up to 11, and we’ll discuss that in the next episode). Also in this episode: Does Dave need to shut up already about using condoms? How reliable are various forms of contraception? A challenge to the top environmental NGOs to start telling the truth about the unsustainability of economic growth. And a politician startles the world by quitting because his government isn’t doing enough about the climate. NOTE: Dave heard back from Final Straw about his problem getting the cleaning squeegie out of his straw. They informed him he had purchased a "bootleg" product made by someone else. The real Final Straw is scheduled to start deliveries in November. Ashley talks with Dave and gets a guys perspective on many of your questions. Hear a "Him and her' perspective on dating and relationships. *Note Dave and I were pretty tired the day of recording and he was a bit shy doing this episdoe.
Our team has been travelling a lot as we close out the year - and each team member uses a different travel routine. Dave usually tries to make the most of travel time by getting work done, but one time he decided to give himself a break. Ten minutes into a movie, Dave realised he had no idea what the movie was about. He was staring at the screen but his mind wasn't processing what exactly was happening! Maybe you've had a moment like that before - your mind has blanked, or you haven't been able to focus in? What's actually going on when this happens? Dave asked himself that question and he realised he was carrying a feeling of guilt. Turns out, Dave was travelling on Mother's Day and he was feeling bad for not being home to celebrate with his wife and boys. He was so concerned about not being at home that he couldn't even focus on the movie. Dave tried to process what he was doing and by questioning the feeling of guilt that he had. NOTE: Dave allowed himself to sit with the feeling of guilt. This helped him to examine what was important about the guilt he was experiencing and to determine that next time he can plan not to be travelling on Mother's Day. Even after processing and questioning what we're feeling or experiencing, we might still find ourselves distracted. What can we do to refocus our attention? Suggestions, tips and advice for practising mindfulness: - try mindful listening: play a song and listen to individual parts of the song: focus on the sound of the guitar, then the sound of the drums, then the bass, etc. if your mind wanders, its OK, just bring your attention back to the mindfulness practice you're using - this actually helps you more because you're working out your brain. you can use your three senses: take a deep breath, then count five sounds you can hear, then count five things you can feel right now, then count five different things you can see; this helps especially with anxiety. body scan: work from your toes to the top of your head and focus on the different sensations you feel in each part of your body. focus on your breathing or your thoughts. apps for mindfulness: Smiling Mind, Headspace and Calm. try different things and find the one that works best. Have you ever crammed for the last 10 minutes before an exam? Try doing mindfulness instead. Even just sitting and breathing will create a more calm and present state, which will help you focus better during your exam. Benefits of practising mindfulness: - decreases violence and aggression - grows the part of your brain that deals with stress and anxiety - helps you remember and learn more - helps you feel more compassionate towards yourself and others - reduces procrastination - improves overall focus and attention - increases resilience It sounds counterproductive, but spending time doing mindfulness actually leads to clearer, more focused activity afterwards. Challenge of the week: each day this week, try a different form of mindfulness. Create a reminder on your phone that reminds you to do mindfulness each day. Episode Notes: We'll be uploading some of our older shows that deserve more attention and perhaps a re-listening. On iTunes and elsewhere (like PlayerFM.com) all of the audio is visible on a single page but on sites like Talkshoe you have to scroll through multiple pages so it can get a bit tedious to view the older shows. NOTE: When the next "Blast From The Past" is uploaded the previous BFTP show will be deleted. On earlier podcasts we've made a number of references to the forgotten teachings of the Hebrew belief system. Dave mentioned a couple of doctrines that he believes were an important aspect of those ancient traditions. ON HEAVENLY COUNTERPARTS: "See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven THEIR ANGELS always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 18:10) "When Peter came to himself, he said, "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting."When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. Recognizing Peter's voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. They said to her, 'You are out of your mind.' But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, 'It is HIS ANGEL!'" (Acts 12:11-15) ON ANGELIFICATION: "And Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, for they cannot die anymore, because they are EQUAL to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection." (Luke 20:34-36) The obscure subject of Angelification has to do with humans becoming angels at the resurrection (we reject this) and/or becoming equal in nature to angels/Elohim. This relates to the doctrine of deification or Theosis which is an important aspect of Eastern Orthodox Theology as well as the ancient Hebrew belief of Henotheism. http://www.antiochian.org/content/theosis-partaking-divine-nature LINK TO MARGARET BARKER'S "SECRET TRADITION" http://www.margaretbarker.com/Papers/SecretTradition.pdf NOTE:Dave made a reference to Moses making a type of colloidal gold at Mt. Sinai after the Israelites fell into sin even though there is no evidence that he heated the water. (Ex 32:19-20) A crude form of colloidal gold, silver or copper can be made without boiling water or utilizing an electrical current by placing the metal object in a container of water for an extended period of time. One of the reasons this simple method works is because water is a strong solvent. A silver dollar can be used to delay bacterial growth in milk where refrigeration is unavailable. This method has been utilized in Third World countries as well as the pioneering days of the western U.S. http://www.abi4health.com/products/historygold.pdf NOTE: The first 36 minutes of this audio was the early part of a public Talkshoe call on July 22nd entitled "Cassandra's House Cleansing." The discussion on lost knowledge was the latter part of a lengthy podcast from December 2012.
_Note: Dave has been accused of some pretty heinous acts of a sexual nature. This episode was recorded and released prior to the recent outpouring of accusations against him. As such, it's a discussion about music only, like the previous 114 episodes (and the dozens of episodes we've done since) and his personal life is not discussed. _ _While recordings of Brat Attack_ music _ have been taken down , no episodes of the Witchpolice Radio podcast will be taken down for any reason. I consider the podcast a journalistic endeavour, and no newspaper or TV station would remove an interview (on an unrelated topic) from its archive if the interview subject was caught up in a scandal at a later date. Thanks._ ** ** **Dave Z** , frontman for long-running political punks **The Brat Attack** , joins Sam on the line from Ottawa for this episode. The Brats have a new lineup and a new album, _[…And They Called Us Savages](http://thebratattack.bandcamp.com/album/and-they-called-us-savages)_ , which focuses on Canada's relationship to its indigenous people along with the usual anarchist/animal rights/anti-racist content. Dave talks about his experiences (as a native dude) with racism, punk rock longevity and more!

Is Podcasting a Winter Sport? As people can now download new episodes anywhere over their phone (no need to go home and syncronize your ipod like we did in 2009. Buying iTunes Reviews [4:09] Is it OK to "Buy" podcast reviews in iTunes? It seems more of an accepted strategy (as long as they are form listeners and not some fake person from fiverr). The thing to keep in mind is that you can't contact the person in iTunes. If you pick momstaxi34 as the winner, how do you contact them? They need to put their website so you can go to their website and contact them. Without that anybody can say "I'm momtaxi34." Amazon Affiliate Details - Deep Dive [8:00] A question from the August 2nd Show - Some more clarification on Amazon from a couple shows back when we talked about creating your own Amazon links or shortners. From: https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/help/t64/a1 How can I create a link without using HTML coding? You can link directly to the Amazon.com homepage or an item's detail page. Your visitors simply have to visit URLs with the correct Associate IDs inserted. You should use the following format examples to construct your links: Amazon.com Homepage: http://www.amazon.com/?tag=your_Associates_ID(you must change "your_Associates_ID to match your unique Associates ID or tracking ID) Detail Page: http://www.amazon.com/dp/ASIN/?tag=your_Associates_ID For the detail page link, be sure to replace “ASIN” with the product ASIN or ISBN found on the item’s detail page. Can I use a link shortening service for my links? While you are welcome to use link shortening services, the link checker will not be able to verify that these links are functioning as intended. Please remember that you must clearly state that the link in question will take the user to the Amazon site when clicked and ensure that the site on which you are posting the links includes the required statement to identify yourself as an Associate. You must also be able to provide detailed information about the site(s) on which your links have been posted if we request it. We do offer our own link shortening tool that can be used with Product Links. To shorten your links, search for a product from the Associates homepage under “Quickly Add Links” and choose the down arrow next to the item you want to advertise. A message box will appear and you can select “Shorten URL with amzn.to” and copy the short code for your site. From: https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/help/operating/amazonmarks You must prominently include a statement on your site stating that Amazon and the Amazon logo, AmazonSupply and the AmazonSupply logo, and MYHABIT and the MYHABIT logo (as applicable) are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. In some cases if your goal is more networking, then some groups meet at restaurants or coffee houses where its easy to talk. Is Podbean Still Bad? [38:00] Miss Ileane from basicblogtips.com asks is Podbean still bad? They seem to meet most of my needs. 1. They don't rename my file 2. They don't mess with my ID3 tags. 3. They have stats 4. They have the ability to leave (a redirect option). 5. They have support. The thing that makes me worry about podbean is that I can' find a location and person. There is an address on their website, but if you go to Google Earth, we can't verify if its a real address. The other thing that is weird is they list shows that are NOT on the network as if they are. NOTE: Dave went over and looked and their stats have improved since the last time he looked at them, and he is going to do another review of their service. Here are some weird things about podbean.com They have a twitter account, but no tweets. Moving Your Podcast [55:00] Jeff Roney calls in and asks about moving your media files from your web host to a media host. No way around this, it is typically a pain in the butt. Some tips on this: 1. Make a naming convention that helps point the file to the blog posts. This might be sop426_090814.mp3 So I can see the date of the post that the file is associated with. You can then filter the posts in WordPress to show this month and go in and edit it. The longer you wait to move, the harder it is. If you have determined that you are going to podcast, use the service like Libsyn.com or Blubrry.com (use the coupon code sopfree on both platforms to get a free month). Getting your media on the new platform is easier. Libsyn and Blubrry can import your media on to their platform using your current RSS feed. The fun part is changing the location in your wordpress posts (you have to coy and paste - there may be a plugin to help with this). You can upload your entire back catalog, and pay one fee for that. Then months after that will be set at the typical monthly rate. Jeff loved the post about 27 steps to get into iTunes. Find Jeff at onceisfrozen.com Video of Show http://youtu.be/S5NaW3s6pGI
