Has foreign policy realism made a comeback?Mark Weber returns to the show to discuss the resurgence of realism in international affairs. While the foreign policy establishment often pushes utopian visions of spreading democracy (neoconservatism), global market integration (neoliberalism), or international institutions and “rules-based orders” (liberalism), realism offers a stark contrast. Realism sees the world for what it is — a competitive arena where power, security, and national interest drive events, not ideological fixations.Don't miss this insightful conversation. Property taxes are complicated, so is it any surprise that reforming the property tax code is similarly complicated? We talked about the property tax issue on this Plain Talk (again) because it is, without a doubt, the most complicated and consequential question before lawmakers in Bismarck during the 2025 session. Rep. Scott Louser, a Republican from Minot, discussed his property tax plan, which includes coupling a spending cap on local governments with a buydown of property tax mills. He also critiqued Gov. Kelly Armstrong's plan, saying he's worried that his proposed primary residence tax credits could depress North Dakota's real estate markets. Sen. Mark Weber, a Republican from Casselton, talked about his role in this process as the chair of the Finance and Tax committee, which will need to sort through these bills. Weber represents a largely rural area, and said that the owners of farm land are worried about being left out in the cold on property tax relief. In some rural areas, the bulk of property taxes are paid by a relatively small number of land owners. Is that fair? And what sort of a situation are we creating if a small number of voters, who don't pay the property tax thanks to the state's primary residence credits, can vote to raise taxes on a much smaller number of land-owning voters who do? "Everybody should pay a little property tax," Sen. Weber said. He also expressed frustration with the number of bills introduced this legislative session, which close to a record for the last 20 years. "I think we are introducing entirely too many bills in the legislature," he said. "If we had less bills we could have more meaningful debates," he added. 4. Y Jaguar no rugió. 5. Copersucar, no tan dulce.

We've raised generations of kids that are now more aggressive, more confident, and all these kinds of things. They don't have some of the fears and anxieties we had.09:36 I feel like we can sell our company to people, we can get them excited and enthusiastic about what we're doing here if we have that opportunity to have that conversation.13:22 To look at these younger people and say, we're gonna be fine. We just have to find them out there and we have to attract them and we have to understand that they think about some of these things differently than we do.Contact your hosts:Steve Doyle:WebsiteLinkedInEmailBrad Herda:WebsiteLinkedInEmail Mark WeberWebsiteLinkedInEmailThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Mark Weber is the founder of the consulting firm Legacy Planning Advisor, LLC. He has spent his career working with individuals and families to craft financial, estate, and legacy plans designed to achieve a wide variety of objectives. He leads the Omaha Chartered Advisor In Philanthropy® Study Group—a group he founded in 2012 with the support of the Omaha Community Foundation. Mark is currently working with The American College of Financial Services to create legacy planning tools and micro-courses designed to reach beyond high-net-worth individuals and families.   Mark joins me on the show to discuss the turning point that made him transition out of the life insurance business and into helping people pass on their wealth with thought and meaning. He shares why he decided to take the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP) designation and encourage a group of colleagues to join him, and how that turned into ten years of sharing the course with others. Mark also explores the three major themes in his book The Legacy Spectrum, including the psychology of feeling that you have enough money to commit to helping others.   “A lot of people want to pass as much wealth as they possibly can to their families, but they don't think about what happens when they get it.” - Mark Weber   “A moral autobiography talks about the money you leave, it talks about who you were as a person, and what your legacy is going to be.” - Mark Weber   “I felt if I could change how advisors talk to their clients about philanthropy, I could have an impact.” - Mark Weber    This Week on The Wow Factor: How Mark's parents instilled a work ethic in him as a young man Why Mark decided not to pursue a legal career after finishing his law degree and how he got the experience to develop a career in the insurance industry Key skills that Mark learned from his years working in high-end life insurance The distressing experience that really highlighted the importance of taking out life insurance The typical focus of estate planning and where Mark saw the gaps to expand people's understanding of how they can help the wider community How a chance encounter with Warren Buffett changed Mark's perspective How Mark's book, The Legacy Spectrum, helps estate planning professionals to consider how to initiate a conversation about philanthropy with their clients The aim of a moral biography and how it acts as a legacy for your children The importance of teaching your heirs to be good stewards of the money you leave behind Why Mark wants to make Omaha a more generous and gracious city and what he's doing today to continue to push towards that   Mark Weber's Words of Wisdom It's important to educate your kids about the value of money.
