Dr. Antoine van Oijen is a Distinguished Professor and Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow in the School of Chemistry at the University of Wollongong in Australia. The work Antoine does combines physics, chemistry, and biology. He develops new types of microscopes to visualize complex biochemical reactions at the level of individual molecules. In particular, his group is interested in how DNA is copied before a cell divides. Antoine is also doing research examining how bacteria acquire antibiotic resistance. Antoine and his family enjoy spending much of their free time exploring the beautiful beach and hiking in the wonderful parks nearby. Antoine received his MSc and PhD in Physics from Leiden University in the Netherlands, where his graduate work was recognized with the C.J. Kok prize for best doctoral thesis. Afterwards, he conducted postdoctoral research in Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University. Antoine served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and Groningen University in the Netherlands before his recent move to the University of Wollongong where he is today. Antoine has received a wide array of honors and awards for his research, including the Armenise-Harvard Junior Faculty Award, a Searle Scholarship, a NSF CAREER Award, a Vici Award from the Dutch Science Foundation, the Dutch Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Award for the most promising young scientist, and the prestigious Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship. In this episode, Antoine discusses his research and his journey through life and science.

Maar ook in woelige tijden tonen bedrijven veerkracht. Met de ontwikkeling van innovatieve producten, het ontdekken van andere markten en het vinden van nieuwe klanten. Jezelf opnieuw uitvinden dus. In deze 3-delige serie hoor je hoe andere bedrijven dat doen. Gastronomixs koos 8 jaar geleden meteen voor een abonnement als verdienmodel. Voordeel? Een stabiele inkomstenstroom, ook als het economisch even minder gaat zoals nu. Toch is het niet vanzelfsprekend dat klanten hun abonnement altijd maar verlengen, benadrukt Inge. Ze wijst er daarom op dat je continu om feedback moet blijven vragen. Door de coronacrisis richt het bedrijf zich nu ook op hobbykoks thuis, een nieuw klantsegment dus. Gastronomixs deed afgelopen jaar mee aan het Investor Readiness Program van de BOM. Hiermee hebben ze hun waardepropositie kunnen aanscherpen, met name die voor de Britse markt. Want dat is waar het bedrijf z'n pijlen op heeft gericht.

OUTBREAK is a national consortium whose analysis used big data and Artificial Intelligence to highlight how urinary tract infections (UTIs) are becoming more persistent and harder to treat, resulting in more people being admitted to hospital where they require longer stays and more costly medicines. Each year UTIs alone lead to 2.5 million GP appointments, 100K emergency visits and 75K hospital stays!. Abstract: Optical trapping experiments have provided crucial insight into the operation of molecular motors. However, these experiments are mostly limited to one measurement at a time. Here, we describe an alternative, highly-parallel, microfluidics-based method that allows for rapid data collection. We applied tunable hydrodynamic forces to stepping kinesin-1 motors via DNA-tethered beads and utilized a large field-of-view to simultaneously track the velocities, run lengths and interaction times of hundreds of individual kinesin-1 molecules under varying resisting and assisting loads. Importantly, the 16-m long DNA tethers between the motors and the beads significantly reduced the vertical component of the applied force. Consequently, forces were predominantly exerted in the direction of motor movement, rather than away from the microtubule surface as unavoidable in conventional optical tweezers experiments. Our approach is readily applicable to other motors and constitutes a new methodology for parallelized single-molecule force studies. Copy rights belong to original authors.
