Thank you for joining us at Horizon West Church! Just as God has a plan to engage every one of us in service to His Kingdom, God also has unique plans for each church to reach communities and share the Good News. The church in Corinth was too distracted by the differences in that body of believers to be effective in following God's lead, so Paul shared with them timeless truths of how God brings us together so that we can serve God together. Unveiling the Profound Wisdom of Romans 8: Embracing Freedom and Hope Introduction: The eighth chapter of the Book of Romans stands as a pinnacle of Christian theology, encapsulating profound insights into the nature of faith, salvation, and the transformative power of the Spirit. This chapter offers a tapestry of spiritual truths that continue to inspire believers and seekers alike, inviting them to embrace a life of freedom, hope, and unwavering faith.Freedom from Condemnation: Romans 8 opens with the declaration that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. This powerful affirmation of God's grace assures believers that through faith in Christ's redemptive sacrifice, they are liberated from the guilt and condemnation of sin.The Role of the Spirit: The chapter then delves into the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. Paul emphasizes that those led by the Spirit experience a transformation that leads to life and peace. The indwelling Spirit serves as a guide, empowering believers to overcome the desires of the flesh and walk in the path of righteousness.Adoption and Heirs of God: In Romans 8, the concept of adoption takes center stage. Believers are adopted into God's family, becoming His children and co-heirs with Christ. This profound truth speaks to the intimacy of the believer's relationship with God and the inheritance that awaits them in eternity.Suffering and Glory: Paul addresses the reality of suffering in the life of a Christian, acknowledging the challenges and tribulations that believers may face. However, he offers a perspective that transcends the pain: the suffering of this present time is not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed. This hope-filled outlook encourages believers to endure difficulties in light of the ultimate reward.Intercession of the Spirit: One of the most significant passages in Romans 8 speaks of the Spirit's intercession for believers. When words fail, the Spirit intercedes on their behalf, presenting their needs before God. This assurance of divine assistance in prayer reinforces the closeness of God's relationship with His children.God's Unbreakable Love: Paul concludes Romans 8 with a declaration of God's unfailing love. Nothing can separate believers from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. The apostle presents an exhaustive list of potential challenges, emphasizing that neither life nor death, nor any other created thing, can sever the bond between God and His chosen. Conclusion: Romans 8 serves as a timeless testament to the transformative power of faith, the liberating grace of Christ, and the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit. This chapter invites believers to embrace a life of freedom from condemnation, hope in the face of suffering, and an unbreakable bond with their heavenly Father. It encapsulates the essence of Christianity—a faith rooted in the assurance of God's love, the victory over sin, and the promise of eternal glory. As believers engage with the truths found in Romans 8, they are equipped to navigate the complexities of life with unwavering faith and steadfast hope. Title: Understanding Galatians 5: Embracing Freedom through the Spirit Introduction: Galatians 5 is a chapter in the New Testament of the Bible that holds profound significance for Christians seeking to understand the true essence of faith and the freedom found in Christ. Written by the apostle Paul, this chapter delves into the contrast between living under the law and living by the Spirit, emphasizing the importance of spiritual freedom and the transformation it brings to believers' lives. Galatians 5 provides valuable insights into the qualities of a Spirit-led life and the liberation that comes from abandoning legalism and embracing God's grace. Freedom through the Spirit: The central message of Galatians 5 revolves around the concept of freedom. Paul begins by emphasizing the liberating power of Christ, declaring that it is for freedom that Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1). This freedom is not merely a release from the bondage of sin and the law, but it is an invitation to live a life in alignment with the Spirit of God. Paul highlights the contrast between the law and the Spirit, explaining that those who seek to justify themselves through obedience to the law have fallen away from grace (Galatians 5:4). Instead, believers are called to live by faith and allow the Spirit to guide their actions, thoughts, and attitudes. The Fruit of the Spirit: One of the most well-known passages in Galatians 5 is the discussion of the fruit of the Spirit. Paul lists nine characteristics that manifest in the life of a person who walks in step with the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). These attributes reflect the transformative work of the Spirit in the life of a believer. Love becomes the foundation upon which all other qualities are built, while joy and peace radiate from a heart rooted in God's grace. Patience, kindness, and goodness are extended to others, and faithfulness becomes a guiding principle in relationships. Gentleness and self-control govern one's actions and responses, enabling believers to live in harmony with God's will. Crucifying the Flesh: Galatians 5 also addresses the ongoing struggle between the desires of the flesh and the desires of the Spirit. Paul warns against yielding to the works of the flesh, which include acts such as sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, hatred, jealousy, and fits of rage, among others (Galatians 5:19-21). Instead, he encourages believers to crucify their fleshly desires and allow the Spirit to take control. Crucifying the flesh involves a deliberate surrender of one's selfish desires and impulses. By recognizing the destructive nature of these actions and aligning with the Spirit, believers can experience true freedom and liberation from the bondage of sin. Conclusion: Galatians 5 serves as a powerful reminder to Christians about the freedom and transformation found in Christ. It emphasizes the importance of living by the Spirit, walking in faith, and bearing the fruit of the Spirit. As believers surrender their lives to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they can experience a liberation from legalism, selfishness, and sin. Galatians 5 invites Christians to embrace the freedom offered by Christ and to cultivate a life marked by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Through the Spirit's work, believers can live out their faith authentically and bring glory to God. There is unity among the redeemed. One body, one Spirit, one Hope.
Sara looks at what we can expect when we understand what it means to be baptised by one spirit, into one body, and the trajectory that sets us on.
Philippians 2:1-8Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? 2 Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. 3 Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. 5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross.ONE ACCORD: The Power Of A Unified ChurchPeter Scazzero“Perhaps one of the most destructive myths alive in the Christian community today is the belief that smoothing over a disagreement or 'sweeping them under the rug' is part of what it means to follow Jesus. For this reason, churches, small groups, ministry teams, denominations, and communities continue to experience the pain of unresolved conflicts.” Acts 4:32-33 32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.Acts 1:1414 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.Acts 2:44-4744 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.UNITY IS GOD'S WILLJohn 13:3535 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”Dietrich BonhoefferThe church is not a religious community of worshippers of Christ but is Christ himself who has taken form among people.Rich VillodasIf the church is the body (of Christ) we dare not cannibalize ourselves. When we devour each other (through gossip, slander, condemnation, etc) we sink our sharp teeth into the flesh of Christ—not in Eucharistic (communion) worship, but in fleshly fallenness.John 17:20-23“My prayer is not for them (the disciples) alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”A.W. TozerWe pray, “Oh God, send thy Holy Spirit upon us so we'll be united.” We might just as well repeat “Three Blind Mice.” God does not hear that kind of prayer because it has no sense in it. The Holy Ghost did not come upon the disciples to unite them. The Holy Spirit came upon the disciples because they were already united, “being of one accord and in one place.” Scholars tell us that “being of one accord” is a musical term, meaning harmony. The early Christians already were one. They were in harmony with each other when they were together in one place.Matthew 5:21-24 21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.' 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother[c] will be liable to judgment; whoever insults[d] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!' will be liable to the hell[e] of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First, be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.UNITY IS BORN FROM HONORRomans 6:1-610 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.Honor: the recognition of the value, contribution, and importance of others.Peter Scazzero“For years I would observe unusually gifted people perform in extraordinary ways - whether in the arts, sports, leadership, politics, business, academics, parenting, or church - and wonder if somehow they had escaped the brokenness that plagues the rest of us. Now I know they hadn't. We are all deeply flawed and broken. There are no exceptions.”Dietrich Bonhoeffer“No Christian should approach another Christian directly; they should be mediated by Christ.”1. Avoid Gossip2. See Jesus in Others 3. Speak directly to each other “Don't tell me unless you plan on telling them.”4. Assume the Best 5. Remember Who's Team We're On 6. Don't Try To Be Right, Try To UnderstandUNITY IS NOT ALL OF US BEING THE SAME1 Corinthians 12:17-2417 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts,[e] yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. UNITY IS NOT ACHIEVED THROUGH AVOIDING CONFLICTUNITY MUST BE PROTECTEDGalatians 2:11-1411 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.[a] 13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”David GuzikAs hard as this was, Paul did it because he knew what was at stake. This wasn't a matter of personal conduct or just personal sin on Peter's part. If that were the case it is unlikely that Paul would have first used such a public approach. This was a matter of the truth of the gospel; proclaiming, “This is how a man is right before God.”SIGNS YOU AREN'T PROTECTING UNITY 1. People feel comfortable talking negatively to you about others 2. You feel comfortable talking negatively about others 3. You feel uncomfortable talking to the people who can actually help youUNITY IS CRITICAL TO A MOVE OF GODPsalm 24 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. 5 He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob."It seems to me so much humbug. To be waiting as we are waiting, to be praying as we are praying, when we ourselves are not rightly related to God." Then, he lifted his hands toward heaven and prayed, "O God, are my hands clean? Is my heart pure
As Paul answers questions the Corinthians asked regarding spiritual gifts, the focus is not on the list of gifts but on the unity that those with the gifts should have in Christ. The Triune God supplies, has Lordship over, and puts into effect the gifts for the common good of the church. Together, they build up the body and are used for God's glory-
Sometimes it feels like we're all alone in this world, separated from the people and things around us, and all too often, from our Source. Yet, in our heart of hearts, we know that we are part of something greater – and that something greater is within us, too. Both science and spirituality teach us that no matter how isolated we feel, we are always affecting everyone, everywhere.
As we look at Galatians 5 we are challenged to apply Paul's words and live differently. He teaches us that the word not the world must define how we tackle race. The spirit not the flesh brings real change and love not the law is the only way forward.
When we understand the eternal relationship of Father, Son and Spirit, we have a starting point to understand God, ourselves and our relationships: with God, one another, and all creation. The exquisite oneness of Trinity, union with distinction, is essential, mysterious, and beautiful. It is summed up in the word “perichoresis”. To become a Christian is to become a body part of Jesus. All people who put their faith in Christ become hands and feet and ears and eyes of his spiritual body. That means that everything happening in our lives is also happening in the life of Christ. And in the lives of one another. We are all connected. So we suffer together and rejoice together. And we need each other. Hands have no purpose if they are disconnected from arms. They are lifeless and without strength. But when each part is connected to the whole, the body begins to function beautifully and full life is known. We were made to live this way, to be connected to each other, to share one Spirit and one body.

We need the leading of the Spirit to live lives of risk for Jesus. We need the power of the Spirit while being centered on Jesus! We need the presence of the Spirit while dwelling on the loving sacrifice of Jesus. We need the gifts of the Spirit, while we live out of the righteousness of Jesus. It is not Jesus or the Spirit, it is Jesus and the Spirit, or our faith… indeed our church is incomplete. James, Peter, Paul, and Barnabas certainly knew this to be true. They proclaimed the completed work of Jesus through the active work of the Spirit… One grounding, the Other leading, so that the church might be what God intended her to be. The true church is Jesus-centred and Spirit-led.Future Church | Jesus-Centered & Spirit-Led | Acts 15:22-35
