This ambitious effort, dubbed “Fir,” will soon reach general availability. According to Betty Junod, CMO and SVP at Heroku (owned by Salesforce), the overhaul includes a shift to Kubernetes and OCI standards, reinforcing Heroku's commitment to open source. The platform now features Heroku Cloud Native Buildpacks, which let developers create container images without Dockerfiles. Originally built on Ruby on Rails and predating Docker and AWS, Heroku now supports eight programming languages. The company has also deepened its open source engagement by becoming a platinum member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), contributing to projects like OpenTelemetry. Additionally, Heroku has open sourced its Twelve-Factor Apps methodology, inviting the community to help modernize it to address evolving needs such as secrets management and workload identity. "The operating infrastructure of health plans rely on technology to expedite processes, scale, react quickly to regulatory changes and changes in the market."Technology debt is the cost of maintaining legacy software systems over time, often built in hard code. Updates and workarounds are expensive and the process for implementation is slow, but there's also the opportunity cost, business goals and timelines to consider. In order to adapt to the fast-paced landscape of today's health plan operations, plans need to be nimble and adaptable to change to stay competitive. There are tool sets in the cloud that allow for innovation of processes, software products, and the ability to scale which wasn't previously available. There are many different ways to leverage the cloud and a spectrum of what it means to be cloud-native.  Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) takes all the same servers, infrastructure, and architecture that's in place today, keeps it in-tact and runs it virtually in the cloud. For many this has a lot of benefits, scales, and can be optimized. The next step in the evolution on the spectrum is Platform as a Service (PaaS). This gets rid of the limitation of having the infrastructure and architecture lifted into the cloud and it builds an infrastructure through code by leveraging the cloud-native storage, tools, and technology as the platform itself for software services, products and applications—allowing for greater innovation capacity. PaaS allows for quick scaling, up or down,  enhanced automation and connectivity between development pipelines, heightened security, API management, governance and toolsets. Guest post by Tom Moxon, Head of Resourcing Services, IT Alliance Technology systems across all industries are in a process of transformation, with cloud playing a major and disruptive role. Organisations are rethinking their investment in IT Infrastructure to prepare for the future. In turn, new approaches require IT professionals with highly specialised skills and experience, creating an obstacle for many companies. For example, financial institutions across the board are heavily investing in upgrading their customer facing platforms and IT infrastructure, with cloud strategy playing a significant role and Platform as a Service (PaaS) systems (such as Azure and AWS) providing a crucial, stable platform to support online customer engagement. In this scenario, banks are working their way through the challenges of making traditionally in-branch services purely digital. While some processes – like setting up a current account – can be done entirely through digital portals, others – such as processing mortgage applications – are still quite manual and require hard copy documentation. In order to drive their business strategy and enable successful transformation, such organisations must overcome these obstacles and facilitate automation. This will rely on a combination of the right technology and talent. Coping with the complex Sticking with the financial sector as an example, to take services to the next level, applications such as digital wallets, instant payments and SEPA transfers require complex, secure digital infrastructure. Similarly, Open Banking resources such as APIs (Application Programming Interface) and PSD2 (the revised Payment Service Directive) can make online banking more accessible and safe, but they involve transitions which must meet stringent security and privacy requirements. The digital transformation projects required to bring processes entirely online require comprehensive governance and skilled IT professionals who have experience in designing them. IT architecture must also be designed and future-proofed in a way that will allow organisations to scale successfully going forward. At the moment, there is a severe shortage of IT professionals with the necessary skills to support these projects. But that can't stall innovation and transformation. Companies need to turn their focus elsewhere and beyond their four walls, working with consultants and contractors with the necessary experience and developed skills. This will allow them to create a distinct advantage and be effective in their digital – and business – objectives. This can also provide them more flexibility in terms of how long they engage with such specialists and control over their costs. Tackling the talent gap Looking to the future, any investment made today should also deliver long-term value for the organisation. That means the ability to scale and secure business by investing in people as well as technologies. In many financial institutions, in-house professionals are experienced in using legacy systems. They do not necessarily have the skills to support new digital transformation projects, but upskilling and retaining can address this gap. Consultants and contractors again can provide support here and during transition periods, when in-house IT departments get up to speed with new applications and processes. Even during times of uncertainty and recession, when headcounts are often frozen, many institutions can benefit from engaging expert IT professionals on a contract basis with experience in the relevant areas to support the delivery of business-critical projects and the integration of new applications with older systems. In the same vein, spending now on training internal teams can deliver longer-term value for challenging times when innovation is ever more important. Heute starten wir eine dreiteilige Reihe zur Cloud Security. Heiko Gossen begrüßt dazu den sehr erfahrenen und kompetenten Experten Carsten Marmulla im Datenschutz Talk. Neben einer kurzen Klärung der verschiedenen Cloud-Varianten Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) und Software as a Service (SaaS) geht es vor allem um grundsätzliche Fragen der Informationssicherheit, die VOR der Verlagerung von IT-Services in die Cloud geklärt werden sollten. Dabei geht es auch darum, welche Verantwortung hinsichtlich der Sicherheit beim Kunden verbleibt und welche Verantwortung übernimmt der Cloud-Anbieter. Als Kunde ist es sehr wichtig, sich dieser geteilten Verantwortung bewusst zu sein und zu verstehen, denn nur so lassen sich Verantwortungslücken vermeiden. Weitere Aspekte sind bspw. auch die Benutzerverwaltung in der Cloud, Modellierung der Infrastrukur, Golden Images, Public und Private Cloud sowie Zugriffsbeschränkung für Daten.

Topics discussed included: the benefits of PaaS; building a platform with Kubernetes as the foundation; selecting open source components and open standards in order to facilitate the evolution of a platform; and why care should be taken to prioritize the developer experience and create self-service operation of the platform. Why listen to this podcast: - When starting a business and searching for product-market fit, creating an application using a monolithic code base deployed onto a commercial Platform as a Service (PaaS) product is a very effective way of iterating fast and minimising operational costs. - There may come a point where the PaaS cannot provide bespoke requirements, or it has trouble scaling, or the costs become prohibitive. At this point many teams choose to build a custom platform using cloud technologies, such as Kubernetes. - Building a Kubernetes platform can be an effective solution, but appropriate effort needs to be put into designing, building, and maintaining the platform. The platform effectively becomes another product within the business that must be managed accordingly. - Embracing open standards provides many benefits, especially for the long term. Implementations that are consumed through well-defined interfaces and abstraction can be more readily swapped at a later point in time. It is also generally easier to integrate components that share common interfaces. - Attention and resources must be provided to create an effective developer experience for the platform. It is essential to prioritize self-service operations, and also to understand the core requirements of the engineers and QA specialists that will be using the platform during their daily work. - Establishing an effective continuous delivery pipeline can enable more repeatable and scalable testing of applications, and also allows the codification of cross-functional requirements. - The cloud native landscape has now evolved to a point where most of the frameworks and tooling required to build a platform have become viable for general purpose usage. However, some assembly may still be required, and engineers should be prepared for change, as the ecosystem moves fast. Time series data management continues to underpin huge swaths of application deployments today across on premises, and increasingly, cloud native environments. Whether it's video streaming, real-time financial security data management, energy utility management or any application that requires time stamps for often very complex datasets at massive scales, time series data will play an integral role. Today's time series data platforms can typically be used for data analysis and forecasting by processing millions of data points per second. Pricing has also become affordable for a growing number of enterprises seeking high-powered data analysis as a way to distinguish themselves from the competition. These organizations also do not necessarily have the financial backing that the world's largest financial institutions or Fortune 100 companies have at their disposal. Why listen to this podcast: - Render is aiming to be the next generation of cloud provider. Developers deploy and manage applications via a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) -like experience using custom simplified YAML configuration. - Render is built on top of Kubernetes, but the internals and configuration of this orchestration framework is not exposed to end user developers. - Many large scale usages of traditional cloud vendor platforms require the formation of specialised in-house “DevOps” teams. The provision of virtualisation and API-driven operation via the cloud providers was revolutionary, but it didn’t fundamentally change the existing platform paradigm. - Arguably platform usability may have taken a step back with the arrival of public cloud vendor platforms. For example, developers may just want to write code, and not have to write complicated deployment descriptors. Operations team may want to focus on supporting engineers and advising on performance and scale, rather maintaining cloud provisioning scripts. - The Render team are planning to run all future workloads of self-managed Kubernetes, rather than use a hosted offering, due to them experiencing implementation bugs when running their clusters at medium-to-large scale. - The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is encouraging large amounts of innovation within the cloud platform space. However, due to the Cambrian explosion of the Cloud Native Landscape over the past several years, there must surely be consolidation of tools, platforms, and vendors in the near future. It may not be as opinionated as traditional Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings, but it has become popular due to its extensibility. There are PaaS-like solutions built on top of Kubernetes, such as OpenShift, Knative, and Cloud Run. - The creation of common interfaces within Kubernetes -- such as Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs), Container Networking Interface (CNI), and Container Runtime Interface (CRI) -- enabled the adoption of the platform by vendors and the open source community without everyone needing to agree on exactly how to implement extensions. - Although not every workload can be effectively implemented using an event-driven architecture, for those that can the Kubernetes-based Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) platforms like Knative and Cloud Run can handle a lot of the operational management tasks for developers. - Engineers may be able to get ~90% of the “service mesh” traffic management functionality they need from using a simple proxy. However, the separation of the control and data planes within modern service meshes, in combination with the rise in popularity of the sidecar deployment model, has provided many benefits within Kubernetes. - A lot of learning within software development and information technology is transferable. There's no doubt that cloud computing as a platform and a technology has been rapidly growing and evolving in the past decade. Everything, I mean everything is in the cloud nowadays. But is that growth sustainable? On this episode of the Software and Technology podcast brought to you by Marketscale, host Sean Heath sought the answer from two experts: Ed Stockton, Vice President of Services and Pablo Gomez, Services Engagement Group Manager, both at ViON. The Virginia-based company implements and manages Infrastructure “as-a-Service” (IaaS) and Platform “as-a-Service” (PaaS) as well as multicloud solutions including private, hybrid, public cloud, and multicloud. "I don't think there's any risk of the cloud computing infrastructure disappearing anytime soon," Stockton said. "The sustainability of the platform itself is very confident." Confidence is good considering the sheer volume of data that cloud platforms are storing. "We're creating more data in one year than we'll have created in the entire history of humankind," Stockton said. But that amount of data can lead to cloud sprawl, similar to service sprawl a decade ago. "Whenever people are accessing cloud technologies, it's very easy to turn systems on, use them, and kind of forget about them," Gomez said. "When you need another system, you figure it's really easy so I can turn on another one. Then before you know it if you're not closely managing your cloud environment, you can have all these machines stood up and the problem is you're paying for systems and workload that you're not even really using anymore."

Dynamics 365 goes PaaS with PowerApps

It was less than a year ago... I was asking Dynamics 365 leaders about the possibility of Dynamics 365 being offered as a "Naked" platform. The strategy, that has been successfully employed by Salesforce.com for years, did not seem like it was on Microsoft's radar. I was told "Never gonna happen". Fast-Forward to a month ago... It happened. Seems Like Yesterday It wouldn't be a post by me, if I didn't first take you down some long-winded path of how we got here, before I get into "here"... and this is a post by me. So we're going to go back in time, to the day before "Dynamics 365" became a brand. The product I am referring to was called Dynamics CRM Online. This was Microsoft's answer to Salesforce.com, a CRM that was Cloud from day one. I won't go all the way back to 2011, when Microsoft clumsily stepped into the ring with Salesforce. Those early bouts were too painful to remember. But even though Dynamics kept getting knocked down, they kept getting back up. From first-round knockouts, Dynamics persevered... progressively making it to three rounds, then five, then eight, up to the occasional draw. For the ardent battle watchers, Salesforce.com is still winning, but their corner must be concerned about the trajectory of Dynamics. Just another acquisition Microsoft was on an acquisition tear a couple of years ago. In a seemingly desperate attempt to shore up their weaknesses against the reigning champion, Microsoft bought a bunch of crap to bolt-on to Dynamics. Since most of these have gone down the drain, how is it that Dynamics is closer now to knocking out Salesforce, than ever before? It is actually because of Field One. Huh? Field One was a third-party solution that provided field service capabilities for Dynamics CRM Online. Were these "capabilities" the secret weapon? Not even close. But there was something unique about the Field One acquisition that ultimately led to a huge light-bulb going off that changed everything. Nativisation I know, I made up another word, deal with it. In the Dynamics world, when it comes to third-party solutions, there is this idea of "Native". What it means is that the solution was built within Dynamics, using Dynamics as the platform. The former Microsoft Dynamics Marketing, Parature and other acquisitions were not built on the Dynamics platform, Field One was. A better known example of a Native solution is ClickDimensions. The evidence is undeniable, Microsoft's success with Native solutions, versus trying to incorporate non-native solutions, is clear. In case I lost you, Native is better. I am sure Microsoft would love to have figured this out, before they had squandered so much capital on non-native options... but some things just have to be learned the hard way. They Know Now With the Field Service example, Microsoft dove into their own development capabilities to build Project Service.. kind of a fork of Field Service, as both share many resources. Coming some time later, but with the same native-built mindset, was Dynamics 365 for Marketing, but I am getting ahead of myself. Let's talk about the "pivot". Pivoting A "Pivot" in the software business is when you change directions. Sometimes you pivot because you are failing, other times you pivot because you see a better path than the one you were on. Dynamics has been a pivoting machine. This includes "re-pivoting", where you pivot back from a previous pivot, like the "Business Edition '" pivot(s)... but I digress. A major pivot that Microsoft made, was to rebrand all of their disparate Dynamics offerings under a new name "Dynamics 365". Sometimes one pivot, leads to other pivots. In this case, for Customer Engagement, in particular, it was the idea of separating apps. Separation Anxiety It starts with licensing. Dynamics 365 included Sales, Service and Marketing as a complete, single SaaS offering. This Field Service thing was a separate add-on solution, so It was priced separately, as was the Project Service offering. Seems like it makes sense to go ahead and separate the other workloads as well, so suddenly Sales and Service are licensed separately. Unfortunately, Sales and Service were not "separated", from either each other, or the underlying platform. No problem, a paper license will solve that! So, if you are keeping up, we now have separately priced workloads. We were hearing from Microsoft that Sales and Service would eventually be physically separated from each other, as well as the platform, but it was not clear at that time, how that would be accomplished. The CDS Pivot The CDS Pivot, among other things, provided the means for Microsoft to untangle Sales and Service from the platform. I am not sure at the time of this writing, where they are on the separation of Sales and Service from one another, but at least they got the twins out of the mother. And what is the mother? CDS (Common Data Service). CDS is the underlying "Naked" platform upon which Sales, Service, Field Service, Project Service and the new Dynamics 365 for Marketing are installed upon. These "apps" as we now call them, are the "First-party" apps, the ones that Microsoft owns. But wait a minute... did I say Naked? The Naked Platform Today, as a result of all of this pivoting, we now have a new option. We have the ability to provision the Dynamics 365 platform, without any first-party apps... a naked platform. Okay, it is not completely naked. It includes what is known as CRM Prime, think of that as some basic building blocks. Things like Accounts and Contacts as record types (entities), as well as functional things like Activities, etc. But no Sales specific things like Leads, Opportunities, Quotes, Orders, and Invoices for example. Almost naked. But it does include the XrM development "engine", meaning you can build whatever you want on top of those basic blocks. This platform is available under the name PowerApps, and in particular "Model-Driven" PowerApps. The license required to utilize it is called the PowerApps P2, and it costs $40/month/user. If you are thinking that this sounds a lot like that thing they said they would never do less than a year ago, you would be right. It's called a pivot. Who Cares As a customer, with Sales related needs for example, you might be wondering, what's the point? Obviously you need the robust Sales capabilities of the first-party Sales app, otherwise CDS is just a glorified Rolodex. That would be a fair read. In the large majority of cases, I see the first-party apps as being the appropriate starting point. Why on earth would you spend the money to have someone build all of that on the naked platform, if it already exists? It would not be to save money, that's for sure. The first-party apps are highly evolved, sophisticated solutions. It would not be economically viable to attempt to replicate them, to save a couple of bucks. But what if your needs are unique? I know, everybody thinks their needs are unique. From talking to thousands of customers over the years, I can tell you, what most of you think is unique, is just configuration. But occasionally, you will find that situation where the first-party app will require so many development level changes, that there is not much left of the first-party app. In many of these cases, I see where it would be more economically viable to "roll your own" on CDS. Protection Pivot So Microsoft's first thought when all this came about was "OMG, Customers might build their own solutions and not buy our First-party apps". So up until very recently, it was a requirement that to get CDS, you had to buy one of their first-party apps. To me this seemed like a lack of confidence in the value of their first-party apps. Salesforce is not lacking any confidence, they have had a platform-only license for years, and it has not hurt their first-party apps. In fact, it probably drove many first-party app sales. As they thought this through, it seems Microsoft came to the same conclusion, and we had another "pivot". Mix and Match For the customer, it is not a "one or the other" option. Sure, you can go with pure CDS and build everything from scratch. But what if the first-party Sales apps works great for you... but the "Service" app does not? No problem, the PowerApps license is included with most of the First-party apps. Meaning you can use the Enterprise Sales App for sales, but build you own unique service app on CDS. BTW, they both are running on the same underlying database, meaning your same Accounts, Contacts etc.. PowerApps is PaaS I don't know that I have heard Microsoft refer to Model-Driven Powerapps on a bare CDS as a "Platform as a Service" (PaaS) offering, but that is what it feels like to me. Just one more area where Microsoft is leading with "Platform". Like I said, for certain customers, this will be huge, for most it will be "So What".  But one camp that is drooling at the mouth is ISVs. Powered by PowerApps is Microsoft's answer to Salesforce's Force.com platform. A quick internet search for "Powered by Salesforce" will return a bunch of ISV solutions. Most of these solutions are vertically specific, highly targeted applications. This is an area where Microsoft would like to land some punches, and PowerApps is a new fist. I foresee, in the very near future, "Powered by Dynamics 365" will return similar results. Specific Vertical applications, for which the requirements were not contemplated by the first-party apps. So we start a new championship bout, the announcer says "Let's get ready to ruummble"... ding, ding  .

As the nation's only high-speed intercity passenger rail provider, Amtrak needs to know critical information to run their business such as: Who's onboard any train at any time? How are booking and revenue trending? Amtrak was faced with unpredictable and often slow response times from existing databases, ranging from seconds to hours; existing booking and revenue dashboards were spreadsheet-based and manual; multiple copies of data were stored in different repositories, lacking integration and consistency; and operations and maintenance (O&M) costs were relatively high. Join us as we demonstrate how Deloitte and Amtrak successfully went live with a cloud-native operational database and analytical datamart for near-real-time reporting in under six months. We highlight the specific challenges and the modernization of architecture on an AWS native Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution. The solution includes cloud-native components such as AWS Lambda for microservices, Amazon Kinesis and AWS Data Pipeline for moving data, Amazon S3 for storage, Amazon DynamoDB for a managed NoSQL database service, and Amazon Redshift for near-real time reports and dashboards. Deloitte's solution enabled “at scale” processing of 1 million transactions/day and up to 2K transactions/minute. It provided flexibility and scalability, largely eliminate the need for system management, and dramatically reduce operating costs. You know, I get asked a lot about the difficulty of starting a company in Japan as a foreigner. Cloud computing is a paradigm for using IT services with characteristics such as flexible and scalable service usage, on-demand availability, and pay-as-you-go billing. Respective services are called cloud services and their nature usually motivates a differentiation in three layers: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) for cloud services offering functionality of hardware resources in a virtualised way, Platform as a Service (PaaS) for services acting as execution platforms, and Software as a Service (SaaS) representing applications provided in a cloud computing way. Any of these services is offered with the illusion of unlimited scalability. The infinity gained by this illusion implies the need for some kind of regulation mechanism to manage sup- ply and demand. Today’s static pricing mechanisms are limited in their capabilities to adapt to dynamic characteristics of cloud environments such as changing workloads. The solution is a dy- namic pricing approch compareable to today’s exchanges. This requires comparability of cloud services and the need of standardised access to avoid vendor lock-in. To achieve comparability, a classification for cloud services is introcuced, where classes of cloud services representing tradable goods are expressed by the minimum requirements for a certain class. The main result of this work is a framework for exchange-based trading of cloud com- puting commodities, which is composed of four core components derived from existing ex- change market places. An exchange component takes care of accepting orders from buyers and sellers and determines the price for the goods. A clearing component is responsible for the fi- nancial closing of a trade. The settlement component takes care of the delivery of the cloud service. A rating component monitors cloud services and logs service level agreement breaches to calculate provider ratings, especially for reliability, which is an important factor in cloud computing. The framework establishes a new basis for using cloud services and more advanced business models. Additionally, an overview of selected economic aspects including ideas for derivative financial instruments like futures, options, insurances, and more complex ones is pro- vided. A first version of the framework is currently being implemented and in use at Deutsche Bo ̈rse Cloud Exchange AG.
