Episode 320. We bring our racecar nonsense to The Review Show by watching the 1971 movie Le Mans, set in the real 24-hour motorsports endurance race through the French countryside. Today on the 5: I recently watched a frankly excellent video by Patrick H Willems about Muppet Cinema. At one point in that video he talks about how the new Star Wars films partially went back to practical effects and puppetry, and it's soimething I have failed to credit them for.

In today's episode, we've got something special: a thrilling dive into the 1993 action-packed classic, The Fugitive, and a taste of the bold and beautiful Green River Straight Rye Whiskey. And guess what? We're joined by the incredible Patrick H. Willems, YouTube's own cinema savant, to dissect the film and sip on some fine whiskey. Timestamps: (0:00) Intro (7:25) Brad Explains The Fugitive (9:13) Performances and Themes (42:50) Green River Rye Review (55:02) Patrick's Favorite Things (59:45) Two Facts and a Falsehood (1:04:00) Final Analysis (1:33:43) Let's Make it a Double and Final Scores In this episode, we're breaking down The Fugitive, a film that not only set the bar high for action thrillers but also showcased Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones at their absolute best. Brad gives us the rundown, from the iconic train crash scene to the heart-pounding manhunt that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Patrick H. Willems brings his unique perspective, adding layers to our understanding of the film's narrative and technical mastery. Then, we shift gears to the world of whiskey, where the Green River Straight Rye awaits. This Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey brings a complexity and depth that pairs perfectly with the intricacies of The Fugitive. We wrap up with our traditional Two Facts and a Falsehood, challenging Patrick (and you listeners!) before diving into our final analysis. What makes The Fugitive stand the test of time? How does Green River Rye embody the spirit of Kentucky's whiskey tradition? All this and more, topped off with our scores for both the film and the whiskey. Don't forget to check out Patrick H. Harold Ramis is dood. What are unloved movie masterpieces? Well, they are the films that get rated the lowest by critics and audiences. Sometimes they can be downright bad, other times they are simply very challenging. Who better to join this very first English movie draft on Thumb Wrestling, than two avid defenders of movies that have received too little praise in the past. Veteran podguests Theodoor Steen and Ashley Walker return, to shine a new bright light on titles that can use all the love they can get. You can find the lists and vote on: http://www.thumbwrestling.nl To get to these lists, we played a movie draft! The game: three candidates pick a movie one by one. Six categories must be filled, and each movie can be selected only once in the whole game. Also, after every round of picks, we reverse the order in which we can choose a movie. The objective is to get the best list together of six movies. Who do you think made the best picks? Hey, you want to support this podcast? Visit our Patreon page! Third time's the charm for returning guest (and video essayist extraordinaire) Patrick H. Willems, as we strap ourselves into the driver's seat for a pair of gonzo Cage-rage drivin' devil movies! First up is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the Neveldine/Taylor-directed sequel to the 2000s adaptation of the Marvel comic character, with Cage reprising his role as cursed cyclist Johnny Blaze. This time, he's scraping at the door in Romania, going full Terminator 2 as he keeps the Devil (a scowling Ciaran Hinds) away from his kid. Meanwhile, Neveldine and Taylor do their Crank thing to mixed results, and Idris Elba is completely wasted as a French motorcycle priest(?) obsessed with helping the good guys. Then, we shift gears to Patrick Lussier's Drive Angry 3-D, a faux-grindhouse pastiche filled with more lolrandom epic bacon humor and random CG objects popping out at the screen than you could imagine. Still, it's got a lowbrow charm to it, and William Fichtner somehow out-acts Cage as a smarmy Accountant from the underworld who's chasing Cage's hell-escapee grandpa and his sexy waitress sidekick (Amber Heard). Willems joins hosts Gemma and Slim to “Patrick Explains” his four Letterboxd favorites: Kiki's Delivery Service, The Matrix, Evil Dead II, and Rushmore, and talk about why he devotes his time to demystifying the art of filmmaking, why he relates to a depressed thirteen-year-old witch, the life-changing energy of The Matrix, Sam Raimi's extraordinary output, Bruce Campbell's jaw-dropping jawline, and precocious Wes Anderson characters. Best sequel ever? Since its release, Aliens (1986) has garnered quite the reputation among fans worldwide. It is madman James Cameron's testerone injected action-sequel to Ridley Scott's cosmic horror masterpiece. In stead of one skulking xenomorph, there's a whole insects' nest worth of them. Time to get those guns blazing. The Beauty of Horror Podcast host and writer Chandler Bullock is fine with you and everyone enjoying this movie. Just don't pretend it is good as a sequel to the original Alien (1979)! And if you think that is a hot take, just wait. Chandler brings a few more to the table. We also discuss whether or not we watched the Director's Cut for the pod, the implication of the notorious 'S' at the end of the title and where the hell little girl Newt is supposed to be from. This week on the podcast, YouTuber video essayist extraordinaire Patrick H. Willems hops back on the mic with us for another pair of misguided, xenophobic action pictures! First, there's Bangkok Dangerous, a messy mix of John Woo and Wong Kar-Wai involving an American assassin (Cage) traipsing around Thailand for his next kill, only to find strange purpose among the people (and spicy food!) of the place. Too bad this remake of a 1999 Thai action flick is shockingly low in energy and style, and Cage just doesn't look happy to be here. The same can't be said for the Luc Besson-produced From Paris With Love, a fatty bit of EuropaCorp sleaze that pairs a buttoned-down Jonathan Rhys Meyers with a bald, goateed American pig-dog Travolta as they jaunt around Paris with vases of coke and set about stopping an Islamist terrorist attack. It's as perversely fun as it is horrendously racist, which is an...interesting dynamic to try to navigate! Een echt human being. There are several lines that allude to their blindness and growing weakness, but the major one is where Mace Windu states in “Attack of the Clones” that their connection with the force is waning.“Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones - Obi-Wan Kenobi reports to Yoda and Mace” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTFWEHW_REs The Verbivore references the 1970s Star Wars Christmas Special. If you haven't seen it, we definitely don't recommend that you do. That's time you can never get back. :-) But, what we do recommend is the 2020 Lego Star Wars Holiday Special on Disney Plus. https://www.disneyplus.com/movies/lego-star-wars-holiday-special/22xf1U47vVe0 The Verbivore mentions that she thinks that at the end of The Rise of Skywalker Rey's yellow lightsaber and her overall path in the force could point to her being more like a Gray Jedi.
