Modern zoos are all about conservation. Here at Wild Planet Trust we run two zoo sites Paignton Zoo and Newquay Zoo, but we also run and look after other conservation projects both overseas and here in the UK. In this episode of the podcast Jo and Ollie are chatting to Dr Andrew Bowkett and Dr Tracey Hamston the people in charge of our conservation projects. Dr Andrew Bowkett, is the Trust's Conservation Planning and Partnerships Manager, and at the time of releasing this podcast he is over in Nigeria having meetings about our conservation project with our partners there in the Omo Forest reserve. In this instalment we are focusing on how he has come to do what he does and we touch on some of our overseas projects through our discussion. For more details about our overseas conservation projects take a look at this page on the Trust's website: https://www.wildplanettrust.org.uk/wild-conservation/ Dr Tracey Hamston, is the Trust's Conservation Officer, she looks after our conservation projects here in the UK. Of note are a series of native species reintroduction programs including the plants strapwort and sorbus, white-clawed crayfish and hazel dormice. She also oversees our marine conservation efforts across Torbay, protecting our important seagrass beds, as well as Slapton Ley a national nature reserve in South Devon. You can find more detail on our UK projects here: https://www.wildplanettrust.org.uk/wild-conservation/ In this episode we barely scratch the surface of the work that these two do, so be sure to tune in for potential further updates from Andy and Tracey in the future. For this episode we're pleased to welcome two of our gardeners. I am probably going to be told off for calling Catherine and Jay gardeners: they are from our botanics team. As well as being a zoo, Paignton Zoo is also a registered botanical garden, with an amazing collection of plants from all over the world.. In these podcasts, we have been talking about careers here at the Wild Planet Trust, and we can't ignore the people who keep the zoo looking amazing, and ensure that when we talk about rainforests, we have one to show. Today I visited Paignton zoo with my wife, brother, his partner and my nephews. There was fun to be had, and it was lovely. Have a great Sunday. I also want to apologise for the quality of this episode. It was recorded on my iPhone and sounded like it was recorded with a potato. I won't be doing another recording like this again.
Dr Francis Cabana is the Assistant Director of Zoology & Wildlife Nutritionist at Wildlife Reserve Singapore and holds an Adjunct Lecturer position at Temasek Polytechnic, and shares his experiences working in different zoo's and how he found his love for studying wildlife nutrition.Francis shares how his love for animals started at an incredibly young age, and how his “best mistake” in his life was not having high enough grades to attend vet school. He went on to get his degree in zoology before moving between different zoos and obtaining his MSc and PhD in the UK.Francis was soon offered an internship in zoo nutrition at Paignton Zoo with his mentor Dr Amy Ploughman. Francis notes that this internship was amazing and that he got to use his knowledge and experiences from research in the wild. Eventually, he became involved with the zoological community and zoos associations.Francis shares how important bi-weekly body condition scoring is and to weigh animals where possible. He dives deeper into the details of metabolism and on the different digestive systems for different species. As all animals and organisations are different, he stresses that how one size does not fit all. Francis and Sabrina talk about how Francis became the first-ever wildlife nutritionist at Wildlife Reserve Singapore. Francis explains how he had to try and organise 16,000 different animal diets which did not exist before and the struggle of how hard it is to be a zoo nutritionist as this position is quite rare. Francis gives us a sneak peek into his current research on Sifakas nutrition and tells us about his research on Red Panda's and their multicoloured faeces. Francis shares some of the challenges of providing the appropriate diet to animals in zoos, due to food availability, geographical areas, and whether, therefore, the importance of focusing on needed and key nutrients rather than specific items necessarily.Francis concludes the podcast with an amazing story involving penguins. Amy discusses diseases related to certain diets and some solutions. Amy shares a variety of her research on nutrition, as well as the use of thermal cameras and conservation, sharing on also on the prevalence of obesity, stereotypic behaviours, and behavioural effects of types of diets.
