What happens when you mix Cryptid lore with real wildlife knowledge? In this brand-new episode of the Say What Again Billy Podcast, the SWAB crew is joined by Alyssa Ragan, a zookeeper at the Bronx Zoo with hands-on experience working with primates and carnivores. Together, they dive deep into some of the world's most famous Cryptid sightings and theories, breaking them down from both a paranormal and scientific perspective.   From Bigfoot and the Dover Demon to creatures people swear they've encountered in the wild, the crew explores which legends may actually have logical explanations rooted in real animal behavior — and which stories remain truly unexplained. This episode blends wildlife expertise, Cryptid history, and classic SWAB conversation into one fascinating discussion you won't want to miss. It comes to us from our friends at Terrestrials — the wildly inventive family science podcast from Radiolab and WNYC. Terrestrials explores some of the strangest and most fascinating creatures on Earth. Looking for daily inspiration?  Get a quote from the top leaders in the industry in your inbox every morning.   Niko Radjenovic is the Vice President of Business Services for the Wildlife Conservation Society. After growing up visiting the Bronx Zoo as a child, Niko joined the organization at just 15 years old as a seasonal employee and has now spent nearly 35 years with WCS, rising through the ranks from frontline operations to executive leadership. Today, he oversees attendance-driven revenue and visitation strategies across the Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and Queens Zoo. In this interview, Niko talks about pioneering conservation, nimble leadership, and cascading goals. Pioneering conservation “We were a pioneer in conservation. Now it's one of those buzzwords, but a hundred plus years ago, not so much.” Niko explains how the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society helped shape modern conservation efforts long before conservation became a mainstream focus. He shares the story of how the Bronx Zoo played a key role in helping save the American bison population more than a century ago by breeding bison and reintroducing them into protected habitats in the western United States. He also highlights the organization's history of creating naturalistic, cageless habitats that transformed how zoos approached animal care and guest experiences. Throughout the conversation, Niko reinforces how conservation is woven into every aspect of the organization. From educational messaging throughout the parks to the global field conservation programs operated by WCS, he emphasizes that the guest experience is designed to inspire visitors to care about wildlife and natural habitats. He also discusses how initiatives like the Animal Planet series The Zoo helped communicate the level of care and dedication behind animal welfare and conservation efforts. Nimble leadership “You have to take risks and you have to try new stuff.” Having spent his entire career with one organization, Niko reflects on the leadership philosophy that has allowed him to continually evolve while keeping his teams engaged. He describes the importance of understanding what success looks like, empowering people based on their strengths, and creating excitement around organizational change. Rather than relying on rigid structures or micromanagement, he focuses on transparency, consistency, and helping team members grow into new opportunities. Niko also shares how he approaches leadership with an entrepreneurial mindset. He discusses a pivotal decision around food service operations, where instead of outsourcing, he proposed reinvesting in the business internally and building the expertise needed to improve operations from within. That decision led to significant growth and stronger financial returns for the organization. He credits much of that success to being nimble, embracing change, and surrounding himself with talented people who can execute effectively. Cascading goals “We always make sure they're cascading, that everybody's goals support their manager's goals, support the department goals, support my goals as the business unit head.” One of the leadership concepts Niko revisits multiple times throughout the interview is the importance of alignment across teams and departments. Managing five different properties across New York City requires consistent communication, shared priorities, and a clear understanding of organizational objectives. He explains how cascading goals help ensure every employee understands how their role contributes to broader organizational success. Niko also describes practical strategies for maintaining consistency across multiple locations, including leadership exchanges between properties, regular walkthroughs, and what he calls “inspect what you expect.” By visiting the parks both as a leader and anonymously as a guest, he gains firsthand insight into the visitor experience and identifies opportunities for improvement. This alignment between strategy, operations, and frontline execution has helped WCS maintain strong guest experiences while continuing to grow attendance and revenue.   Niko can be reached on LinkedIn, as well as by email at nradjenovic@wcs.org. Quick recap This was episode 271 of Season 6 of the podcast That Sounds Funny: “Three Blind Siblings Tell It the Way, we See It,” hosted by Keith, Jill and Terry. The episode featured news stories including a bowling alley fire in Litchfield, a goldfish-driven car built by an engineer from the Netherlands, and various animal rescue stories including a badger in a school closet and a red fox stowaway on a cargo ship. The hosts played a Sanford & Son trivia game and Terry presented a top 10 list of funny things about leprechauns. The anchor topic was manual skills, with Keith sharing details about copper plating techniques, and the show concluded with bird-themed jokes and puns. Summary Terry shared his experience at a bowling alley birthday party for his 4-year-old grandson, where his stepdaughter Erin, who is autistic, bowled for the first time and achieved a score of over 500. Jill mentioned her daughter in Wichita, Kansas, had rescued a malnourished chicken. Keith shared news about a Litchfield bowling alley fire, though the cause remained unclear. News of the Week As a bonus, Terry reports on an overturned semi-truck that spilled pancake syrup. He then shared a story about an engineer from the Netherlands who built a car for his pet goldfish to drive, achieving a world record distance of 40 feet in one minute. Jill shared a story about a Flamin’ Hot Cheeto shaped like the Pokémon Charizard that sold for $87,800 at auction. Keith shared a story about a 26-year-old man in Los Angeles who has spent a decade playing Pokémon Go daily and has accumulated a collection of Pokémon cards worth $70,000. Terry then shared a story about animal control in California being called to a high school to remove a badger found hiding in a storage closet. Jill shared about a Shih Tzu dog that got stuck on elevated train tracks in Philadelphia and was rescued using a cherry picker, with authorities still looking for the dog’s owners. Keith then described a red fox that stowed away on a cargo ship from the UK to the US, ending up at the Bronx Zoo. Terry concluded by sharing about Merlin, a potbellied pig in California with 1.1 million Instagram followers, who has been trained to use buttons to communicate his needs. Jill's Trivia Quiz Jill shared trivia questions about the TV show Sanford and Son, including details about characters, actors, and specific episodes. They worked through various questions about the show’s timeline, characters like Fred Sanford, Lamont, and Aunt Esther, and specific plot details such as the neighbor’s unusual pet goat and Fred’s hospital scene. The participants took turns answering questions and sharing their memories of the show, with some questions requiring guesses due to the obscure nature of the information being sought. Terry's Top 10 List Terry presented a humorous top 10 list about leprechauns, covering topics like their struggles with online shopping, lactose intolerance, and rainbow timing. Anchor Topic This is the feature we talk about blindness related issues. Keith begins by saying that a new tactile $10 bill will be released later in the year. The group discussed the process of creating copper plate rubbings, where a wooden dowel is used to transfer the texture of an object onto a thin copper sheet. Keith explained how the process involves starting with a large dowel and gradually working down to a pencil tip size for detailed impressions. The discussion included details about mounting the finished copper plate on wood and applying an antiquing finish, as well as considerations about the durability of the copper rubbing when traveling. Email and Final Thoughts Keith reviewed an email from a priest who shared a story about a drunk person asking about arthritis. He also shared another about farmers trying to mate pigs. Keith also played voicemails containing funny family anecdotes, including a story from a Sunday school teacher about getting into heaven and another about a child using a “sick box” at church. The segment concluded with information about how listeners can submit their own funny family stories to the show. The final word from our AI companion. The meeting was a casual conversation focused on sharing jokes, primarily bird-themed puns. Participants, including Keith and Jill, took turns telling jokes and sharing humorous stories. Terry joined later but did not contribute significantly due to technical issues. The conversation ended with a reminder about the show’s webpage and how listeners can engage with the content. Wasting your time on overhyped or overpriced attractions can eat away at your valuable time in the city.In this article, we're gonna help you avoid wasted time and money by calling out five overrated NYC attractions you can keep OFF your itinerary.Plus, we'll provide alternatives to each of these common tourist traps.1- Serendipity 3The crowds are hectic, the ambiance is overstimulating, and none of the food or desserts we tried were very good.Instead, go to Caffè Panna or Grace Street.2- Statue of Liberty/Ellis IslandWe've covered this in full detail previously, but this experience is too long, too crowded, and too much waiting in line to be worth your time. Instead, take the free Staten Island Ferry or simply view the Statue of Liberty from Lower Manhattan.3- The Charging Bull in FiDi The crowds around this statue overstate what you'll actually get out of the experience. While passing by is great, we wouldn't go out of our way to view this statue. Instead, go to the 9/11 Memorial Pools.4- Central Park ZooThe Central Park Zoo is actually quite small, with not very many animals. If you want a zoo experience, go to the Bronx Zoo. It has 265 acres and SO many exhibitions.5- Museum of Ice Cream/Color/IllusionsIf social media didn't exist, neither would these "museums". Instead of spending the $30 or so for one of these money grabs, go to any of the iconic museums like the MoMA, The MET, or the Museum of Natural History. You'll Have to Check It Out - Swift Hibernian LoungeProbably the coziest Irish pub you'll find, with an unbelievable pour of Guinness. Cole's surprise drop, Birthday Blizzard '26, a DJ Clue-hosted mixtape/EP released January 27, 2026—just hours before the rapper's 41st birthday. This 5-track project (4 new freestyles plus a full playthrough) serves as a direct prelude to his seventh studio album, The Fall Off, set for February 6, 2026.Available exclusively via thefalloff.com for $1 (pay-what-you-want, including free downloads), it skips streaming platforms to emphasize direct-to-fan independence. Analytic Dreamz breaks down the tracklist: “Bronx Zoo Freestyle,” “Golden Goose Freestyle,” “Winter Storm Freestyle,” “99 Build Freestyle,” and “Birthday Blizzard '26” (full playthrough). Themes center on reflection, legacy, career pressures, and public scrutiny—most notably revisiting Cole's public apology to Kendrick Lamar and withdrawal from the Drake vs. Kendrick feud after his “7 Minute Drill” response and Dreamville Festival admission. The episode explores the strategic rollout: foreshadowed by Jadakiss comments on freestyles over The LOX beats like “Money, Power & Respect” and “Can I Live,” it resets the narrative post-beef fallout, reaffirms Cole's lyrical prowess, and builds massive hype for The Fall Off—potentially his final album, handcrafted over a decade. Fan excitement surges, shifting from doubt to anticipation of a contemporary classic.Analytic Dreamz unpacks the bar-heavy credibility boost, introspection, and control over messaging in this no-DSP, birthday-timed release. Italian Pride and Global Purpose: NIAF's John Calvelli On Culture and Building Bridges

Send us a textA room of 2,300 people fell completely silent—and not just any room, a ballroom filled with passionate Italians—while Andrea Bocelli sang “Mamma.” That shared hush becomes our doorway into a rich conversation with John F. Calvelli about what truly unites us: heritage, humility, and the courage to build bridges across differences.John wears two hats that reveal one mission. At the Wildlife Conservation Society, he champions global conservation from the Bronx Zoo to the farthest field sites. As the new chairman of the National Italian American Foundation, he's focused on three priorities: energizing young professionals through mentorship and community, deepening U.S.–Italy ties in both culture and business, and building sustainable funding so those ambitions endure. We dive into the electric momentum of NIAF's 50th anniversary gala—honoring a 104‑year‑old WWII veteran, watching a new generation sing along, and witnessing a respectful, cross‑party conversation with Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senator Joe Manchin, and Maria Bartiromo that modeled what civic grace can look like.Threaded through it all is a leadership philosophy shaped by family tables, immigrant grit, and St. Francis's wisdom: in giving we receive. John explains why stories move people more than statistics and how that insight helped power wins like naming the bison America's national mammal—a coalition effort spanning Native nations, policymakers, and the conservation community, rooted in the Bronx Zoo's historic role in bringing bison back from the brink. We explore how community and entertainment—film festivals, documentaries, shared meals—turn values into action, whether the goal is cultural pride or wildlife protection. If this conversation resonates, tap follow, share it with a friend who cares about culture or conservation, and leave a quick review to help more listeners find the show. Your voice helps us keep building a community that protects what matters—our stories and our wild places.About your Host- Alexia MelocchiBuy My Book - An Insiders Secret: Mastering the Hollywood PathAlexia Melocchi - WebsiteThe Heart of Show Business - WebsiteLittle Studio Films - WebsiteShop Our Merchandise!TwitterInstagramFacebookLinkedInAbout NIAFhttps://www.niaf.orgThanks for listening! “Help!” It's the second smash film, from the biggest band in the world, released when Beatlemania was still at its peak. It's filled with great - and in a few cases, top-tier - Beatles music. Its cast includes well known actors, and the director was an expert in maximizing the boys comedic, personable on-screen talents. It satirizes the burgeoning Bond franchise and, it's in color! (Take that, Boxing Day 1967 UK airing of “Magical Mystery Tour”) And yet the question must be asked all these years later: is “Help!” a classic? A great movie? Merely a good one? And in the grand scheme of Beatles excellence, what's wrong with that? UBP's Medved and Maltin (which one's which??) ask these questions, and also ponder: ☠ Is Poison's “Every Rose Has Ken Thorne” the most famous power ballad about the “Help!” incidental music composer?

74. Mr. Ranger Tom Grieve talks Billy Martin

Past Our Prime

Before Billy Martin ever wore the pinstripes as a manager, he guided three different American League clubs. The Twins in 1969; the Tigers from 1971-73 and the Rangers from 1973-75. In each case, Martin did what he would always do: take a losing club and turn them around. The Twins improved 18 games to 97-65 in 1969, and won their division. In 1971, Detroit won 12 more games than they did the year prior and a year later, they went to the playoffs. But his biggest challenge had to be the Rangers, who were an abysmal 57-105 in 1973… and a year later, 84-76… a 28-game improvement. Sports Illustrated called him a fiery genius when he was on their cover in June of 1975 and that's just what he was. As smart a baseball man as there ever was who wouldn't take crap from anyone. Not the owner. Not the GM. Not his players. Not the guy at the bar. And he had issues with all of them. But rarely on the field. Once they said ‘Play Ball' there was no better strategist than Billy. His players weren't scared of him… but they were scared to lose for him. Billy wouldn't stand for it. He got the best out of his players because he believed they could be better than they actually were… and more often than not, he was right… and he has the wins to back it up. Tom Grieve played under Martin and had two of his best seasons in the bigs while Billy was his manager. 50 years later, Grieve says that Martin was the best manager he ever played for. He's not the only one to think that. Tom Grieve played for the Rangers 7 seasons. He would later become their General Manager for 10 years and followed that up by working as a broadcaster for the Rangers for another 22 years… there is a reason he is referred to as Mr. Ranger and is a member of the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame. But he says those years with Martin may have changed baseball in Texas for good, as fans for the first time showed interest in what had been, until that time, a pretty dreadful organization. “Billy revitalized baseball,” according to Mr. Grieve. On the Past Our Prime podcast, Grieve looks back at those years with Martin and talks about how he instilled in them a fear of losing, and a path to winning. He says that Billy believed they could win, much to the disbelief of many on that Rangers roster, and told them so in the first team meeting upon his arrival. And sure enough, wins started piling up, and the Rangers were making believers out of just about everyone, including themselves. Grieve says that the team knew their manager gave them an edge in the dugout and that carried out onto the field. Six weeks after Martin was on the cover of SI he was let go by the Rangers after another disagreement with management. It was a pattern that Martin had his entire career, and would follow him to his next position… as the manager of the New York Yankees… but before Steinbrenner and Reggie and the Bronx Zoo… there was Billy in Texas… and Tom Grieve, “The man who signed Nolan Ryan!”  tells us how it all went down on the Past Our Prime podcast… Please review, subscribe, listen, download… whatever you do with a podcast… when you can. His many articles can be found in such publications as The New York Times, News Day, The Guardian, Audubon Magazine and even Sports illustrated. Of particular note, Ted won the prestigious John J. Burroughs Medal, a recognition that hi-lights the best of natural history writing. The Bronx Zoo's Herpetology Team cares for a number of venomous snakes at the zoo's World of Reptiles. As professionals, they know what they're doing. Just in case, though, the zoo team keeps antivenom on site and a thorough plan in place to address any potential emergencies. Fortunately, it hasn't been needed any time in recent memory. Instead, that antivenom, and the team, are helping to save lives outside the zoo through an impactful partnership with nearby NYC Health and Hospitals–Jacobi. On January 1, 1898, Greater New York was formed from the union of two cities – New York and Brooklyn, along with other towns and villages of the region, creating the five boroughs we know and love today. But each of those five boroughs brings their own unique histories and personalities. And so for this year's annual Bowery Boys Halloween Special, we thought we'd give each borough the spotlight – or rather the spooklight – to highlight the city's haunted landscape, from rural escapes to densely populated urban centers. Ghosts, you see, can manifest anywhere! And a special treat -- every single one of these ghost stories was sourced from actual newspaper and magazine reporting of their respective eras. Journalists on a ghost beat, finding ghostly activity in every corner of the city. The Bronx: The Reptile House at the Bronx Zoo doesn't seem like a haunted house, but when a sudden ghost whistling disturbs both man and beast alike, zoo directors call a meeting .... and a medium.Brooklyn: When a former hospital in Flatbush converts into a luxury apartment tower, horrifying poltergeists stop by to spook the new tenants. Is it all a ruse -- or something more sinister?Manhattan: The Russian mystic Madame Blavatsky attempts to divine the identity of a spooky ghost orb along the East River waterfront. Is it the apparition of the beloved watchman Old Shep?Queens: The 19th-century town of Flushing seemed overflowing with ghost stories! But none more notorious than the sight of three sword-wielding spirits at the Old Meeting House, the 17th-century house of worship with a few secrets under its foundations.Staten Island: A tombstone-nabbing ghoul at the Old Clove Cemetery in Concord decides to ride a trolley.Find the complete list of Bowery Boys ghost story podcasts here.Get tickets to our live Ghost Stories of Old New York podcast (Oct 29-31, 2024) at Joe's Pub here

Brian Hunt, Executive Producer of Bronx Zoo '90: Crime, Chaos and Baseball, the astonishing true story of the 1990 New York Yankees, chronicling the team at a crossroads in their storied history. The season went on record as one of the worst and was made even more infamous by the drama that ensued off the field. Based on a series of articles from New York Post columnist Joel Sherman, the docuseries covers team owner George Steinbrenner's removal from baseball for trying to buy information on Dave Winfield from a notorious gambler. Adding to the chaos, beloved team captain Don Mattingly was caught in a contentious contract dispute, a top free agent signee went missing, rookie Deion Sanders wavered between two sports and a controversial outfielder pursued a relationship with a local high school girl. Despite it all, the 1990 Yankees laid the groundwork for one of the greatest dynasties in sports history.
