What do gorillas, gender roles, and glass ceilings have in common? Today's guest, Erna Walraven, knows the answer firsthand. One of Australia's first female zookeepers, Erna spent two decades as Senior Curator at Taronga Zoo, working with some of the world's most powerful animals, while battling an entirely different kind of beast: misogyny and sexism in a male-dominated working environment.Erna has penned a book, Hear Me Roar - part memoir, part feminist science, and all parts entertaining. Through vivid storytelling and deep biological insight, Erna explores the parallels between power, gender, and the animal kingdom, challenging assumptions about both human and animal behaviour. In this episode, we unpack what it means to fight for your place in a world that wasn't built for you, the surprising truths the natural world can teach us about gender, and how Erna carved out a legacy by refusing to be silenced. This one's fierce, fearless, and fascinating. Let's meet the formidable Erna Walraven…**Find Erna's new book here: Hear Me RoarFor more information about Erna, check out these places;-Website: Erna WalravenLinkedin: Erna WalravenInstagram: Erna WalravenHead to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;-
This week Nicola and Di chat with the passionate and purposeful Dr. Phoebe Meagher. Phoebe is a scientist at the Taronga Zoo Conservation Society with a diverse background in wildlife conservation, forensic research and education. She has been pioneering the use of advanced technology and AI to combat wildlife trafficking and enhance animal detection. Phoebe has also led many field projects which have had a tangible impact and allowed for the successful release of rehabilitated animals back into their natural habitat. On top of all of that, Phoebe is also a mum of 2. In this conversation, we hear all about the incredible project that Phoebe has been leading, where Taronga is using AI imaging technology to detect and prevent animals that are being illegally trafficked. Phoebe tells us about the astounding wildlife trafficking trade, with thousands of animals, such as blue tongue lizards, being poached and sent through the mail to foreign countries where they are sold for substantial amounts of money. Phoebe also shares some of the most incredible stories from her career as a wildlife biologist. From almost losing an arm whilst hand feeding sharks, to being shocked by numb rays when she was studying sting rays for her PhD thesis as well as the most epic expedition through the jungles of Palawan. On that particular trip, Phoebe was guided by an animal poacher, 8 military guards and a young man wielding a machete in the hopes of finding a pangolin (the most trafficked animal in the world) so they could take the images they needed for the AI tech to prevent it being trafficked in the future. It is really amazing to hear about all of the conservation work that Taronga is doing and to learn how much zoos have changed for the better over the years. We are so proud of the work that Phoebe is doing and thankful that there are women like her in this world. We hope you enjoy this chat as much as we did. In the early 1980s, when Erna Walraven decided to follow her dreams and become one of the first female zookeepers in Australia, she thought her biggest challenges would be feeding big cats and subduing irate gorillas. In fact, it was her male colleagues who made work miserable, harassing and humiliating her for doing a 'man's job'. So, she looked to the animals under her care to prove them wrong. Despite what Erna's colleagues seemed to think, the females of the animal world were far from weak and demure. Elephant matriarchs led their herds; female bonobos revelled in sexual exploration; emu mothers abandoned their chicks to the care of their fathers. Her colleagues wouldn't dare tell a female tiger that hunting was a 'male's job' - why were they so intent on limiting Erna? In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Erna Walraven about the sexist, male-dominated culture that greeted her when she first started working as a zoo-keeper at Taronga Zoo in 1983, the wonders of the animal world and what animals taught her about feminism, and how the culture of zoo-keeping has changed for the better.

Erna Walraven was one of the first female zookeepers to work at Sydney's Taronga Zoo in the 1980s. Despite practical jokes from her male colleagues, like animal dung in her gumboots, Erna kept her nerve. She was born in The Netherlands, to parents who were involved in the Dutch resistance during World War II.Erna's love of languages took her to Spain, where she lived for many years with her widowed sister and young nephew. It was there she met a penniless Australian backpacker and fell in love, starting Erna on the path to the rest of her life.Erna's memoir Hear Me Roar is published by Affirm Press. This episode was produced by Alice Moldovan. Today, we're heading back to Taronga Zoo, but this time, it's on a lovely day trip, with Zora, and her Uncle Aziz! Only Zora spends a little too long cooing at the baby hippos, and gets locked in! That means she has the whole zoo to herself, all night long. That seems like sooo much fun, and not scary at all! Until she sees some eyes gleaming at her from the darkness...

When Dr Gillian Deakin became a GP, she knew she didn't want to work behind a desk. Instead, she travelled overseas to make a difference. More recently, she has focused on treating patients with functional illnesses — symptoms that come and go despite all tests and scans showing up as normal.Dr Gillian Deakin grew up close enough to hear the lions roaring at night in Sydney's Taronga Zoo.She was part of a large, Catholic family and learned social justice and critical thinking from a young age. When Gillian became a doctor, she promised herself her career wouldn't involve sitting behind a desk. She worked on the Australian outback film Burke and Wills, in Antarctica and on the tiny coral atoll of Kiribati.Today Gillian treats patients with functional disorders — aggravating symptoms that sometimes escape medical diagnosis and can deeply affect people's lives. This episode of Conversations touches on personal stories, family origins, personal stories, mothers, fathers, Antarctica, Kiribati, outback Australia, GP training, functional symptoms, and functional illness.

Aaaand we're back. Guest friend this week is Ben Cameron from the ABC. Ben works on ABC radio each week with Mick Malthouse and has a theory to put to Dane, that Mick loves ratbags. And we hear more about Mick's 'jam' passion. We talk about Ralphy's slightly misleading Bucks headline about Dane not wanting Bucks to coach, the longer version is that Dane says Bucks is a better person when he's not coaching. We discuss Tassie and who might coach the team, Dane reckons they will struggle for players, and should focus on players who aren't into the more exciting lifestyle on offer in places like Melbourne and Sydney. Dane makes the comment that Tim Lane has no idea what he's talking about when he says that kids will love to live in Tassie. We ask Ben about COLA and Ralphy puts his idea to Dane and Ben about a kind of reverse COLA in cheaper to live in markets like Adelaide. We then get to the list. Dane and Ralphy give their Top 20 players of the past 20- years, and Ralphy gives his Top 20 of the 80s and 90s.Ben tells us a story about going to Taronga Zoo with Mick Malthouse, and Mick told him about preventing Glen Jakovich from being eaten by a lion.Dane tells us why Bomber Thompson is an arsehole, and Ben tells us why he reckons Malcolm Blight is one of the nicest blokes, he shares a ripping story about Blighty and Karmichael Hunt.Ralphy and Dane ask Ben, who watches and calls footy every weekend, to talk us through where he reckons each club is at. And as a Perth boy he explains why he reckons Adam Simpson survived at West Coast at the end of last year.Ben reckons the ABC's footy call and commentary is far more contemporary than it gets credit for.We talk about the relationship between the media and footy coaches, and how those who 'play the game' get an easier ride than the others. And Ralphy continues to bang on about his bet on Freo for the flag.Follow us, share the pod with a mate, and support us if you feel the urge. ‘Pathologists know everything, they just know it too late' For our guest Dr Heather Fenton, wildlife pathology is like being a detective solving a murder mystery case. Only that her victims are not human, but dolphins, penguins, sea snakes or turtles. For her that makes it even more exciting. Heather works for the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health and is based at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. The location of the zoo, overlooking beautiful Sydney Harbour is as amazing as what's going on behind the scenes, lots of wildlife conservation, reconciliation work with indigenous groups and plenty of education for kids and adults alike. Join us for some of Heather's story based at the heart of Sydney. Check out Heather's profile and the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health: https://arwh.org/

It's Halloween and you know what that means: celebs dressing up in hot costumes. Not so with Heidi Klum, Halloween's biggest fan, who has topped all of her previous efforts by dressing up as a giant earthworm. We talk about why this slimy turd is so compelling. Speaking of scary, several lions escaped from their enclosure in Taronga Zoo this week, and we're wondering what they were looking for. Taylor Swift has made history (again), and Elon Musk has everyone in a tizz with his acquisition of, and plans for, Twitter. And a ruling on the gossip columnist whose behaviour caused Rebel Wilson to prematurely come out is timely, in a week when Heartstopper actor Kit Connor is being hounded for supposed “queer baiting”. Myf and Zan have been watching lots this week too, with a saucy plane movie, and an excellent doco on Tourette's.
