Screen-based devices play a central role in adolescents' daily lives, serving purposes such as education, entertainment, social interactions, and creativity. While public concern about the impact of screen use on adolescent mental health has grown, evidence of a direct link remains unclear. The association between screen use and mental health is complex, influenced by many factors. This webinar will report on new data about this association based on an analysis of the data provided by Australian adolescents currently enrolled in the Black Dog Institute's Future Proofing Study. These findings will be framed within the broader context of screen use research and offer recommendations for both societal and individual changes to help adolescents benefit from online experiences while reducing potential harms.Dr. Lyndsay Brown has worked for five years as a Research Officer on the Future Proofing Study, now the largest and most comprehensive longitudinal study of adolescent mental health in Australia. Between 2019 and 2021, thousands of Year 8 students across Australia were recruited for this six-year study and each year they complete confidential questionnaires about their mental health, identity, experiences, and well-being. The team analyses this data to identify the risk and protective factors associated with adolescent mental health and the early interventions that could help adolescents thrive. Lyndsay's work spans school engagement, data collection, research, public presentations, and community outreach.Hosted by Dr Kathy O'Grady.

Understanding Humanitarian Narratives: Insights from Zainab Moallin and Hande AkpınarIn a recent podcast, Zainab Moallin, Research Officer at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), and Hande Akpınar explored the complex world of humanitarian narratives. Their discussion, "Patterns and Divergences in the Narrative Landscape," examined how stories and frames influence beliefs, attitudes, and decisions in humanitarian contexts.Defining Humanitarian NarrativesMoallin emphasized that narratives are not merely stories but constructed frames that justify humanitarian actions. They shape decisions on why, when, and where aid is needed, who delivers it, and who receives it.Media Double Standards and Racialized NarrativesA significant portion of the conversation addressed media double standards, particularly in portraying refugees. Moallin highlighted the racialized narratives during the Ukraine crisis, where Ukrainian refugees were depicted favorably due to perceived cultural similarities to Europeans, contrasting with the portrayal of refugees from the Middle East and North Africa.Neutrality in JournalismThe ethical challenge of journalistic neutrality was also discussed. Moallin noted that many news organizations prohibit journalists from taking stances on humanitarian issues, framing such positions as political rather than humanitarian. The Power of NarrativesMoallin concluded that vulnerability is a construct shaped by narratives, determining who is deemed deserving of protection. She stressed the responsibility of readers to critically assess these narratives.Key TakeawaysMoallin shared three key lessons:Recognize the Power of Narratives: Narratives shape perceptions and actions.Critical Thinking and Personal Agency: Evaluate humanitarian narratives critically.Responsibility of the Media: Support responsible and balanced reporting. For listeners, she highlighted two key messages:Question the Narratives: Recognize that narratives are constructed and may carry biases.Advocate for Fair Representation: Support unbiased representation of all affected by humanitarian crises. This insightful discussion underscores the importance of understanding and critically engaging with humanitarian narratives.

With all of the manifestos now published and it being written in black and white what the parties are pledging to deliver if elected to government in May, are electors excited about the prospects on offer? In short, not particularly. With Labour clearly on course for a massive victory in May, even their manifesto is surprisingly safe, with the emphasis on reducing electoral risk over inspiring the masses. So what should we think of the manifestos on offer? Is there any innovative thinking behind any of them? Should we expect them to address the cost of living difficulties facing citizens across the UK in 2024 or the local or global economic and environmental crises that risk wellbeing for us all? This webinar was a launch of 'Industrial Policy in Turkey: Rise, Retreat and Return' by William Hale, Mustafa Kutlay and Mina Toksoz published by Edinburgh University Press. At a time when many advanced and emerging economies are adopting more active industrial policies, this book provides an in-depth historical–empirical account of industrial policy in Turkey – its rise, retreat and return. This study adopts a multidisciplinary approach and covers the role of the state in Turkey's initial industrialisation to the current period of restructuring and potential technological upgrading of its manufacturing base. The analysis traces how industrial policy has been shaped by state capacity, the waves of reforms following economic crises, the dearth of long-term finance for industrialisation and, more recently, the need to address issues such as low-tech industrial structure and pre-mature de-industrialisation. The book aims to answer questions of what worked and what went wrong with previous policies. It asks how current policies could be shaped to overcome the problems of cronyism and corruption, and also achieve new objectives of technological upgrading and socio-environmental sustainability. William Hale is an Emeritus Professor at SOAS, having retired as Professor of Politics with Special Reference to Turkey in 2006. His main interests are the modern politics and international relations of Turkey. Mustafa Kutlay is a senior lecturer in the Department of International Politics at City, University of London. His current research focuses on the comparative politics and political economy of developing countries (with particular reference to Turkey, Turkish politics and foreign policy), institutions and development in the global South, and political risk analysis. Mina Toksoz is an International Economist having worked at the Economist Intelligence Unit variously as Editorial Director of the Middle East, Europe, and the Country Risk Service. Arda Bilgen is a Research Officer at the LSE Middle East Centre, where he works on the PeaceRep project ‘Surface Water Changes in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin since 1984 and their Governance Implications for Iraq', led by Dr Michael Mason. His work mainly focuses on water politics, transboundary water resources management, and hydraulic infrastructure development.

May 2024    Over the next 6 weeks, to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, we will be releasing 3 special episodes to tell the full story of The Longest Day. This first part is a complete remastering of our original Tide of Victory episode with the addition of much new content. This first episode takes us to the south coast of Britain which, in May 1944, resembled one huge army camp as over 2 million men waited for D-Day. In the Buckinghamshire countryside the staff at GC&CS carried on feeding detailed and crucial intelligence to the Allied forces that would play an integral part in the success of the upcoming Operation Overlord. The Western Front Committee was established at Bletchley Park in October 1942 and for the next 18 months built up a comprehensive picture of German forces in the West, recording every unit, its location and its strength.  From February 1943 the committee began to produce reports of which over 450 pages are now held in our archives. Head of Content, Erica Munro and our Research Historian, Dr David Kenyon use these to illustrate how the various departments, using multiple sources, came together to create the vital information that the D-Day planners needed, in some cases even leading to last minute changes. Meanwhile our Research Officer, Dr Thomas Cheetham brings us the full story of a temporary Y Station set up at Bletchley Park just for D-Day. This episode features the following from our Oral History archive: Vera Bartram Pat Davies Edna Garbutt Enid Wenban Many thanks to Dr Ben Thomson for voicing our archival documents. February 2024 In 2023, Bletchley Park Trust completed its biggest refurbishment project to date – a £13 million, three-phase project, to open up wartime buildings at the heart of the site for the very first time. The final phase saw Block E, once the wartime Communications hub of Bletchley Park, transformed into two new resources –the Block E Learning Centre – which includes eight learning spaces able to accommodate learners from primary school pupils to students in higher education – and the Fellowship Auditorium, a state-of-the-art, 250-seat, presentation and event space. In this special episode, we join Lily Dean, Learning Manager, and Vicki Pipe, Head of Audiences and Programmes, as they give us tour of the new spaces, and reveal the inspiring activities learners can enjoy as part of our award-winning learning programme.
