When Daniel Carcillo played in the NHL, he was known as an enforcer so tough and volatile, that he earned the nickname “Car Bomb.” In his 12 seasons in the NHL, Daniel was member of two Stanley Cup-winning teams (2013 and 2015 Chicago Blackhawks), lead the league in penalty minutes, and was fined or suspended by the NHL twelve times. He also suffered about a dozen concussions and was diagnosed with early-onset dementia at 30 years old. As he told me, “I know I have CTE,” a progressive and fatal brain disease that he believes drove him to the brink of suicide until—as he describes it—mushroom therapy saved his life. Today, Daniel is a brain health advocate and the Founder/ CEO of Wesana Health, a life sciences company that leverages psilocybin-based medicine to treat traumatic brain injuries. In this episode, Daniel and I discuss: Canada's hockey culture Whether winning the Stanley Cup made him happy The culture of violence in the NHL. The epidemic of brain injury among athletes. How psilocybin, mushrooms, MDMA, Ketamine and other non-traditional medicines are being used treat depression, PTSD, and brain disease Please note I neither endorse nor disapprove of Daniel's POV here. I think there's a lot to learn in this space that could potentially benefit a lot of people who are suffering.  Thank you to my friend Peter Fish for connecting me with Daniel.

Last week, for the first episode of 2022, I shared my personal experience with Covid. On this week's episode, I reflect on this past year, thanking my guests from 2021 and acknowledging that 2022 marks the beginning of our 5th year of the podcast. In the year 2021, we had a total of 19 guests, plus 2 tributes to dear friends, previous guests who died this year: re-releasing my conversations with Peter Fish and Tony Falco. We recorded 12 of our 19 guests via Zoom, with only 7 being able to be here in person. This past year, I shared 24 stories or guided meditations. I told personal stories, reflected on “whiteness”, communed with angels, and deepened my reverence for mystics and mystery. I became more curious to actively learn more about the Native people of where I live - the Lenni Lenape people. I dropped into more intimacy with nature and welcomed the everyday miracles that surround us. I hope that my guests and stories this past year have helped to uplift and inspire you along your journey. Thank you, 2021 for another year of inspiring guests, personal reflections, stories and meditations. May we all practice restoring humanity, dignity, compassion, and justice. May you be safe and healthy, and join me in searching for the mysterious, wondrous ways the Universe is conspiring to support us in 2022. Enjoy the podcast.

While hiking through the ancient, majestic landscape of the southwest last week, we learned that Peter Fish, a dear friend of ours, died of a heart attack. We were shocked, distraught and so very sad. We walked a labyrinth in Peter’s honor, we built cairns to pay tribute to Peter, we held him and his beloved Tracey Anarella in meditation and shared stories of my husband’s 35 year friendship, recalling all the various musical projects with Peter. We are deeply grateful for the positive, healing impact Tracey had on Peter’s life in the past 10 years, softening his intensity, expanding his heart and co-creating a tender, respectful relationship of true love. Which also included the added bonus of inviting Peter into the pride and joy of co-parenting Tracey’s two fabulous kids. Peter Fish had been a guest on my podcast back in 2018 and holds a very special place in our hearts. Experiencing the death of one of my podcast guests is brand new for us. My husband and I decided to re-release the episode when Peter was my guest as a remembrance and tribute to him. So whether you heard it when it was first released or hearing it now for the first time, we invite all of you to get a glimpse of Peter’s energy, his success as a musician and composer and the light he brought into our lives. We thank you Peter, we will miss you dearly, rest easy, dear friend, rest in deep peace. Links: IG: Tracey Anarella

Chef and restaurateur Josh Niland (Saint Peter) not only put seafood back on the table, but changed the conversation too and the world was taking note. It became known as The Niland Effect. Like many in this pandemic, Josh saw everything he’d worked for was disappearing overnight, but this isn’t the first time adversity has challenged his resolve.

Josh Niland can make fish scales taste like sugary cereal and fish eyeballs resemble prawn crackers. In his hands, seafood can become Christmas ham, mortadella and caramel slice. He can even turn calamari sperm into something you'd want to eat (no really)! His creative, waste-free approach to using every fin and scale is a response to the typical method of ditching 60 per cent of everything caught from the sea (“How is that 40 per cent of a fish is getting all the credit?”) and his innovative thinking is showcased at his acclaimed Saint Peter restaurant, Fish Butchery shop, and within the pages of his new publication, The Whole Fish Cookbook. Niland's interest in food started not long after he was diagnosed with cancer at age eight. His mum's chicken pie and the excitement of food media offered comfort after intense chemotherapy treatment – he even pinned pictures of chefs he admired on his bedroom wall. These well-known figures later ended up applauding him when he won Best New Restaurant for Saint Peter at the first national Good Food awards. Before opening Saint Peter with his wife Julie Niland (“Julie and I thought about this restaurant for so long – in every single meal that we ate together"), Josh worked at Est., Glass and Fish Face and shares the many "hectic stories" of his culinary education. A crab-eating competition, funnily enough, led him to being mentored by Fish Face's Steve Hodges, and ultimately inspired him to open Saint Peter (which landed Niland multiple Best Chef honours and a World Restaurant Award nomination alongside Massimo Bottura and Dan Barber). It's fascinating to talk to Josh about everything from the Starlight Foundation wish he was granted as a kid to all the unending possibilities he sees in every scrap of seafood (from cultivating single-origin bottarga to using fish fat like butter in desserts). Many of these ideas are featured in his book, which René Redzepi calls, "an inspiring read, something to return to again and again", and are compelling even if you don't eat fish. (That said, I'm hoping Josh can be convinced to bring back his self-saucing potato scallop one day.)

In addition to being an accomplished composer, musician and producer, Peter Fish is the reason that my husband and I choose to move to Nyack 24 years ago. He raved about this creative, warm village and modeled for us, meaningful ways to be involved in the heart and soul of our community. Peter tells me about his formative years breaking into the music world. When he was a teenager he toured with the Glen Miller Band, Woody Herman Band, Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. When he was 16 years old, Peter tells the story of playing a gig with the legendary Jaco Pastorius (who was 17 at the time), and his missed opportunity to have Jaco play on his album. Peter has had a successful career arranging, composing and producing music for television & movies. He has experienced being a producer in NYC's large, medium and small music houses, able to re-invent himself, changing as the music business changes. Peter is delighted with his current studio, Sound Stories. You may recall my conversation with Peter's partner, filmmaker Tracey Anarella, in episode #7. Peter and Tracey are vibrant collaborators, co-producing her films with Peter writing the music and even learning 2nd camera! You can hear Peter perform his original music live with the Peter Fish Group - inspired by the innovative electronic music of Miles Davis from the 70s. Enjoy the podcast!
