Towne Crier hosts monthly dance night Rhoda Averbach hires a roadie to lug three bulky speakers so she can present Latin Dance Nite at the Towne Crier Cafe every month. But her sparse DJ rig consists of a laptop. "Other DJs use all that stuff to look impressive; that gear really isn't necessary," she says segueing seamlessly between salsa, rumba, merengue, bachata, cha cha, reggaeton "y mas," according to one of her flyers. Beyond the laptop, Latin night unfolds in analog. Dancers peruse notebooks filled with lists of song titles, write down their selections on a slip of paper and hand them to Olive Jones, who sits next to Averbach onstage. The two, who both live in Beacon, also host Funky Dance Night at the Elks Club on the first Saturday of each month, with numbers from the disco era. One slogan is, "If the music is good … dance." Averbach has a fine ear for music and knows how to get the dance floor bumping. A trained composer who melded jazz and classical, she worked with David Liebman and Michael Gerber to record several CDs and tour the country. She became enamored with Latin music after realizing that it "gives people pleasure, and I like to see them happy." Reading the room is an essential skill. "For me, it's about the music. If a song doesn't take off, I'll fade it out within 30 seconds and move on to something else," she says. "You can't go wrong with Marc Anthony." Fast songs featuring hypnotic bass lines populate the floor. Latin dancing is akin to ballroom styles but offers more fluidity and room to improvise. As the repetitive music pulses through the room, bodies spin like tops, feet keep shuffling and hands are clasped over heads and behind backs. When the first notes of the 2004 reggaeton hit "Gasolina," by Daddy Yankee, spilled from the speakers, people popped from their seats. One couple picked a spot in front of the kitchen door and almost caused a collision, but the waitstaff acclimated. The music - and the scene - draws people from all over the Hudson Valley. There are similar events in New Rochelle and Middletown, and many of the dancers knew each other from Nyack. Sitting with a group of friends she met across the river, Joanne Williams, who lives in Poughkeepsie, slipped in and out of her padded high-heel dance shoes, which help keep a dancer's center of gravity leaning forward. "I've met a lot of people through Latin dancing," she says. "It's a nice community." For self-proclaimed salsa addict Lisa Rodriguez, who lives in Bloomingburg, "the music is contagious and there aren't many places to dance in the area." Mastering the steps is all about counting, she says: Salsa is 1-2-3 / 5-6-7 (out of eight) and bachata is straight 1-2-3-4. "I like playing sports, so it's good exercise that gets your dopamine going," Rodriguez says. "I enjoy the challenge of following the cues as the man leads. To do it well, you can't think too much - you have to go with the flow." The Towne Crier is located at 379 Main St. in Beacon. The May 29 dance is sold out, although tickets may be available at the door (call 845-855-1300). The next event is scheduled for June 26; see dub.sh/latin-dance-june. Tickets are $11.

Today, we have a very special community birth story. I love when I get to hear the birth stories of not only our student community, but also of our teaching community. Today, we have a story of the latter! Today on Yoga|Birth|Babies I have Meredith Witte. Meredith Witte is a functional strength coach and a yoga instructor with a Master's in Exercise Physiology. She is the founder and owner of The Playground. She got her start in the world of prenatal movement back in 2018 when she took the PYC teacher training, and had the pleasure of teaching a weekly class at PYC for 2 years. She now lives with her husband Carson and her 7 month old daughter Murphy in Nyack, New York where they love spending time outdoors, hiking, and cooking meals together as a family of 3. It's so evident by the way Meredith tells her story that she has an incredible bond with her partner, and how that assisted her in birth. The story that unfolds is one of trust, believing in the body's ability, mental preparation, and partnership in birth. Enjoy this beautiful episode. Artists and musician team up for BAU show There's plenty of cross-pollination behind the scenes at the Poetry of Place exhibit scheduled to open March 8 with a reception at the Beacon Artist Union (BAU) Gallery. Next month will be mixed-media artist and BAU member Karen Allen's turn to display in the showcase gallery visible from the street, and she invited Jenn Wiggs, who lives in Missouri, to share the space. "Jenn said that she always wanted a show in New York, so I found one," says Allen, who resides in Westchester County. Allen discovered Wiggs' work online during the pandemic, and they gelled. During regular virtual visits, they discuss approach, technique and philosophy. Another of Allen's partnerships will also be on display - with vibraphonist Chris Dingman. They met in October at an Ossining art fair after Dingman paused to study one of Allen's pieces. "I saw him ponder it for a while and then circle around it like a shark," Allen says. For their collaboration, she lends the musician a piece of her art and "I connect with it and visualize the energy," says Dingman, who lives in Nyack. He improvises tones, splices them together and drenches the mix in effects, resulting in experimental ambient sounds. Dingman will perform at the gallery during the opening reception with a hip-high vibraphone, a cross between a piano and a percussion instrument. His 4- to 6-minute compositions will be accessible through QR codes. The Dingman track responding to Allen's "Shadow Hamadryade" stacks layers of cascading notes over a propulsive rhythm. Intertwining drone tones and a prominent hum compete for attention. After the emergence of a throbbing vocal, the song builds to a crescendo. Another piece of music is inspired by Allen's "Third Eye of Hook Mountain," which augments the vaguely discernible features of the Nyack landmark with an underbelly of what could be a river of darkness or primordial layering. As Dingman's tones unfold, dynamics swell, notes seem to play at random intervals and an electronic, Morse Code-like tone chimes. Allen's artistic vision began with a realistic bent: landscapes, figuratives and still lifes. But after meeting Wiggs, she dug into her feelings and "let the spirit take control." According to her website, Allen follows "visual intuitions" and explores a "poetic vision" to convey moods, rather than objects, as she turns toward abstraction. With that approach, "it's easy to start getting into a canvas or montage," she says. "The hard part is knowing when it's done." Some abstract artists are averse to interpreting their work. Others say they want only to know how a piece makes viewers feel - ask at your peril if that cloudy figure in the corner is a bird. For Wiggs, "if someone tells me they see a squirrel and I recognize the squirrel, I'm painting it out," says Wiggs. "Everyone wants to know the meaning behind an edgy piece of art or music. The question is often the answer because sometimes words fail us, and it's just about how we respond emotionally." A joint opening reception for Poetry of Place; Translucent Hues, by Eileen Sackman; and a member group show is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on March 8 at the BAU Gallery, 506 Main St. The exhibits continue through April 6. BAU Gallery is open Saturday and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m., and by appointment. See baugallery.org.

Alliance backs designation as 'inland waterway' Sergei Krasikov's laps across Fishkill Creek come with caveats. After a rainstorm, wait several days for the runoff carrying potential pollutants to clear before swimming. Protect your nose and eyes, and shower afterward. Back on land, Krasikov is co-chair of the Fishkill Creek Watershed Alliance and part of a movement to protect the creek not only for flora and fauna but as a place of respite and recreation. The creek extends for 33.5 miles between Union Vale in northeast Dutchess County and the Hudson River. Featuring gorges and waterfalls, it is the main branch of a 193-mile watershed that spans 14 municipalities in Dutchess and Putnam counties. Born in July 2023 from a collaboration between conservation advisory committees in Beacon and East Fishkill, the alliance's first major project is getting the creek designated by the state as an "inland waterway," said Krasikov, who chairs Beacon's committee. If legislation sponsored by state Sen. Rob Rolison, whose district includes Beacon, becomes law, Beacon and other municipalities through which the creek passes would become eligible for funding through the state's Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) and the Environmental Protection Fund. The programs provide grants for planning, design, land acquisition and other waterfront projects for designated coastal water bodies, such as the Hudson River, and inland waterways. Beacon adopted a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program for its riverfront and Fishkill Creek in 1992 and updated it in 2011, but the creek lacks designation as an inland waterway. "This designation opens the door for the towns along the Fishkill Creek and its tributaries to access vital resources," Rolison said. Along Beacon's portion of the creek, several sections of its Greenway and Heritage Trail have already opened. Along the Beacon Line, an unused railroad line envisioned as the route for a rail trail between Beacon and Hopewell Junction, several vacant parcels have been identified, Krasikov said. For 2 miles, the rail line follows Fishkill Creek, where the alliance envisions places to kayak, swim or relax. "There is a potential for pocket parks - connecting two together and giving people a chance to experience being by the water and enjoying the beautiful creek," he said. New York's designated inland waterways include Wappinger Creek in Dutchess County and Lake Carmel, Lake Mahopac and Lake Nimham in Putnam. With the Hudson River designated as a coastal waterbody, Beacon has used LWRP grants on such riverfront projects as the kayak deck at Long Dock Park. Other beneficiaries include the City of Poughkeepsie, which received a $765,000 grant in 2023 to develop strategies to improve biodiversity, water quality and public space along the Fall Kill Creek. That same year, Nyack received $417,000 to install an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant shoreline walkway and to buttress its waterfront against storm surge and other impacts of climate change. In December, Kingston received $167,000 to update its 1992 waterfront plan and earlier was awarded $552,000 to demolish two condemned, city-owned houses in a flood zone and build a parking lot, boardwalk and pier. With "lingering concerns" about water quality, one of the goals of the Fishkill Creek Watershed Alliance is to study the lower creek's health, said Krasikov. The alliance successfully lobbied to have the middle and upper segments included in an ongoing state water-quality study that covers "everything, from agricultural runoff to biological markers to industrial pollutants," he said. Additional tests for the creek are being designed in partnership with faculty at Bard and Vassar colleges, and Riverkeeper is interested in collaborating with the alliance to measure bacteria indicating fecal matter from sewage, said Krasikov. The alliance is also collaborating on a "watershed characterization" study with Clarkson University's Beacon Institute for...

Dike Blair (b. 1952, New Castle, Pennsylvania) uses gouache, oil, his own photographs, and strategies appropriated from Postminimalist sculpture to create intimate tableaux that transform quotidian sights and materials into exercises in formalism. A writer and teacher as well as an artist, Blair came up in the downtown scene of 1970s New York among punk rockers and Postmodernists. In the early 1980s, against prevailing art world trends toward Neo-Expressionism, he began rendering scenes from his life in gouache on paper. These ongoing diaristic paintings are devoid of human figures but nonetheless evoke the specter of the artist whose daily life plays out at a remove across their finely-wrought surfaces. Blair lives in New York and Sullivan County. Blair's recent solo exhibitions include Edward Hopper House, Nyack, New York (2024); Karma (Los Angeles, 2023, New York, 2022); Various Small Fires, Seoul (2020); The Modern Institute, Glasgow (2019); Linn Lühn, Düsseldorf (2019); Secession, Vienna (2016); and Jüergen Becker Gallery, Hamburg (2016). In 2022, Karma presented an exhibition of Blair's paintings of Gloucester alongside Edward Hopper's paintings of the same small Massachusetts city. Blair's work is featured in the collections of the Whitney Museum, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; The Morgan Library & Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Dallas Museum of Art; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among others. Blair's work is on view in Matinee: Dike Blair at Edward Hopper House, Nyack, New York through October 27, 2024 and at Karma, New York through October 26, 2024. I also discuss the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga fight as Alvarez looks to defend his WBO, WBC, and WBA super middleweight titles. Dems are laughing about Donny Dentures or #TrumpisDone, but the reality inside his head, and Mar a Lago, will be very grim, and there will be a lot of collateral damage. Mental health titans like Robert Lifton have reached the consensus that Trump has been mentally ill for a long time. They've diagnosed him with “narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, delusional disorder, malignant narcissist,” and so on. Such patients meet predictable ends when the wheels fall off. In the cult world (where Lifton has been so influential), there are bangs (Jim Jones) and there are whimpers (Keith Raniere). What might it look like for Trump? No one is more qualified to discuss the possibilities with Matthew than Daniel Shaw, LCSW, a psychotherapist trained in psychoanalysis as well as in trauma-informed psychotherapies. He is in private practice in New York City and in Nyack, New York; and Faculty and Supervisor at The National Institute for the Psychotherapies in New York. He is the author of Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation, published by Routledge in 2014, and nominated for the prestigious Gradiva Award. His book Traumatic Narcissism and Recovery: Leaving the Prison of Shame and Fear was published in 2021. He is known for his work with cult trauma survivors and with clients who have experienced narcissistic abuse. Send us a Text Message.Coheed and Cambria is a progressive rock band originating from Nyack, New York, known for their unique blend of intricate instrumentation, fantastical storytelling, and dynamic vocal performances. Formed in 1995, the band consists of Claudio Sanchez (vocals, guitar), Travis Stever (guitar), Josh Eppard (drums), and Zach Cooper (bass). At the core of Coheed and Cambria's discography lies "The Amory Wars," a science fiction saga created by frontman Claudio Sanchez, which serves as the conceptual basis for much of their music. The narrative follows the epic journey of characters Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon as they navigate through a universe plagued by war, betrayal, and cosmic forces. Each album released by the band corresponds to a chapter in this overarching story, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for listeners.Musically, Coheed and Cambria's sound is characterized by intricate guitar riffs, soaring vocal melodies, and complex rhythmic patterns. Drawing inspiration from progressive rock, punk, metal, and alternative rock, their music seamlessly blends together elements of various genres to create a distinctive sonic landscape. Sanchez's powerful vocals, often compared to Geddy Lee of Rush, are complemented by Stever's and Cooper's dynamic guitar work and Eppard's precise drumming, resulting in a sound that is both grandiose and emotionally resonant. The band's breakout album, "The Second Stage Turbine Blade," released in 2002, garnered widespread acclaim for its ambitious storytelling and musical craftsmanship. Subsequent albums such as "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3" and "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness" further solidified Coheed and Cambria's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential bands in modern rock.Overall, Coheed and Cambria's impact on the music industry extends beyond their innovative approach to rock music; they have created a rich and immersive universe that resonates deeply with fans, solidifying their place as pioneers of modern progressive rock.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------L.S. Welcome to Episode 206 where we have a fantastic conversation with Rebecca Rego Barry, author of THE VANISHING OF CAROLYN WELLS: Investigations into a Forgotten Mystery Author. One reviewer referred to Barry's book as a “process biography.” It is true, Barry takes you along on her investigation into the life of Carolyn Wells who, it turns out, wrote more than mysteries. She wrote poetry, plays, screenplays, puzzles, children's books, and a YA series. Wells was also a serious book collector in a time when that pursuit was considered the domain of men. With Mother's Day just around the corner, this biography would make a great gift. Along with our friend Kate, we did a buddy read of Carson McCullers' novella, REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE. This was part of our Biblio Adventure to Nyack, NY where McCuller's lived for the last 30 years of her life (which wasn't a very long long life: she died at 50, so she actually lived most of her life in Nyack). We explored the grounds of her home (it is not a public author home at this time) and paid our respects at the Oak Hill Cemetery where Carson is buried next to her mother. We visited Big Red Books, a Little Free Library, Pickwick Books, and the gorgeous Nyack Public Library. (Check out our social media for some pics.) We also recap our Biblio Adventure to NYC which was metamorphosed by an earthquake in New Jersey that was felt throughout the Northeast. As always, we talk about what we've read, are reading, and want to read. Highlights include PIGLET by Lottie Hazell, THE STOLEN CHILD by Ann Hood (out 5/7), MOBY DICK by Herman Melville, HOW TO READ by Monica Wood (out 5/7), SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY by Edgar Lee Masters, BLESS YOUR HEART by Lindy Ryan, THE EDITOR: How Publishing Legend Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America by Sara B. Franklin (out 5/28), and two short stories: “Touchless Bidet” by Omar El Akkad from the collection SMALL ODYSSEYS: Selected Shorts Presents 35 New Stories edited by Hannah Tinti and “A Simple Question” from the collection OLD CRIMES: And Other Stories by Jill McCorkle. While he waited for a ride, Amer discovered the body of Shirley Smith behind a dumpster in a restaurant parking lot. Minutes later, police arrived on the scene. Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. We made you a mixtape of some of our fave segments from our full episodes with Daniel Shaw, LCSW, Dr. Ramani, and Dr. Natalie Feinblatt. Think of this as our Chicken Soup for the Culty Soul power-medley. We've got Dan Shaw dropping knowledge on why traumatizing narcissists are so…traumatizing. We've got Dr. Ramani on how to recover from narcissistic abuse. And we've got Dr. Natalie Feinblatt on Trauma, Addiction & Cult-Informed Therapy. It's practically a super group! Pull up a box of tissues, and get ready for all the feels. If you've heard these chats before when they were first born as full ALBC episodes, we still think you'll get some good nuggets out of them. And yes, we love the word ‘nugget' in any form in a way that may border on problematic. We'll be sure to talk to our therapist about that. NOTES: Daniel Shaw, LCSW is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City and in Nyack, New York. He originally trained as an actor at Northwestern University and with the renowned teacher Uta Hagen in New York City, and later worked as a missionary for an Indian guru. His eventual recognition of cultic aspects of this organization led him to become an outspoken activist in support of individuals and families traumatically abused in cults. Simultaneous with leaving this group, Dan began his training in the mental health profession, becoming a faculty member and supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapist in New York. His book, Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation, was published by Routledge in 2014 and was nominated for the distinguished Gradiva Award. In 2018, the International Cultic Studies Association awarded him the Margaret Thaler Singer Award for advancing the understanding of coercive persuasion and undue influence. Shaw's book Traumatic Narcissism and Recovery: Leaving the Prison of Shame and Fear will be published by Routledge in 2021. Dan joined Sarah and Nippy to share his story, drop some knowledge about the shameless ways of traumatizing narcissists, and provide insights on the recovery process. Dr. Ramani Durvasula is the author of two books on the subject: Should I Stay or Should I Go: Surviving A Relationship with a Narcissist and Don't You Know Who I Am?: How to Stay Sane in an Era of Narcissism, Entitlement, and Incivility. Her work has been featured at SXSW, TEDx, the Red Table Talk, the Today Show, and Investigation Discovery. You can also find her on her wildly popular YouTube channel where she dispenses wisdom on protecting yourself from hoovering, gaslighting and other narc trademarks. Or put her Navigating Narcissism podcast in your ears, on repeat: It's good stuff. Dr. Natalie Feinblatt is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Los Angeles, California who specializes in the treatment of addiction and trauma. And one of her trauma sub-specialties is working with former cult members. She received her BA from UCSD and her Masters & Doctorate from Pepperdine University, where she wrote her doctoral dissertation on psychotherapy with former cult members and has specialized in helping them ever since. She also does EMDR, Brainspotting, and other trauma-specific therapies. She was also featured on the series finale of ‘Leah Remini: Scientology & The Aftermath.'
