POPULARITY
My guest this week is Russ Hughes, who's the founder of Production Expert, a group of blogs for music and post-production professionals. Over the last decade, Production Expert, Pro Tools Expert, Studio One Expert and Logic Pro Expert have become some of the leading industry websites with over 7 million visitors annually. Starting his career on the leading edge of music technology as a synthesizer programmer in the 1980s, Russ soon gravitated to Soho where he worked in commercial post, something that he still does. Eventually he became an expert in Pro Tools, which led him to create his popular blogs. On top of that, Russ is also the Managing Director of Sociatech, a global marketing agency for the audio technology sector, working with some of its biggest brands. During our interview we spoke about the unusual way that Pro Tools Expert started, the pros and cons of using AI, moving from London to Ireland, the two character traits you need for staying in business, the gear changing moments in his life, and so much more. I spoke with Russ via zoom from his studio in Ireland. On the intro I looked at song catalogue purchases, and how noice canceling headphones could trigger anxiety attacks. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 100544555, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

Last month Avid announced its 4th quarter and financial results. It’s not something we often report on here at Pro Tools Expert but one stat jumped out at us, that there was a 54.9% year over year growth in subscription revenue growth in the fourth quarter. What this appeared to show is that there is a significant growth in subscriptions and this was something we wanted to investigate. So we asked Avid some questions and rather than give us a statement, Francois Quereuil who is now Vice President Audio, Product Management offered to sit and chat this through and we also discussed now Avid had restructured the business during the pandemic as well as future plans for HDX and the Hybrid Engine.

David Franz is the founder and producer of the Underground Sun record label. He's also an instructor at Berklee College of Music, author of Producing in the Home Studio with Pro Tools (the first book about using Pro Tools), writer, producer and audio engineer.I love this episode. David was so humble and forth giving with information. I remember watching his Pro Tools videos when I was a student at Full Sail University with a Lynda.com subscription (now LinkedIn Learning). David and I talk about a wide array of topics, including being respectful to yourself, which digital audio workstation is best (FL Studio), and what a mixing engineer typically looks for when receiving stems.--Connect with Lennon:Website: https://www.lennoncihak.comPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/lennoncihakMailing List: http://eepurl.com/dlYpxTInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lennoncihak/Twitter: https://twitter.com/LennonCihakLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lennoncihak/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5eX_uxAUIwBC0gyKwCbqtwGuest Request: https://goo.gl/forms/8zs61IYiIXMLjFpX2Connect with David Franz:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidmfranz/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/david.franz.92Underground Sun: https://undergroundsun.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/undergroundsun/Twitter: https://twitter.com/undergroundsun

In this episode I speak with Russ Hughes who is a great friend of mine residing in the UK. He's the creator of two very successful pro audio companies; Pro Tools Expert and Sociatech. He's a very influential speaker and has some special advice for us in these current times.
My guest today is James Ivey, the Technical Editor of Pro Tools Expert and owner and facilitator at Location Recordings in London UK. James has been playing drums since the tender age of 7, performing his first paid gigs at the age of 8. From that moment on there was no stopping him. His parents brought him is first 4-track tape recorder (a Tascam Porta 01 costing well over £1000) at the age of 12 which gave him the bug for recording and ever since then he has been collecting and acquiring gear to make his studio and productions the best they can be. James’ first job in the audio industry was with a pop video production company where he learned what the term deadline really means and other audio skills which have stuck with him, like the importance of clock and sync. Since then he has worked for studio equipment suppliers and installers as well as companies like Sibelius and later Avid and a production demonstrator. James or Jivey is officially the Production Expert gear junkie. If it makes a noise and you can play it or record it, he’s interested. Thanks to our sponsors! I have seen, over the last week or two, a couple of different references to an issue which pivots on the holy trinity of Windows 10, FAT32-formatted removable media, and files with a .wav extension. One instance was at Pro Tools Expert, and the other was at Sound-on-Sound. Seems that the issue is not affecting … Continue reading "Episode 148 – Stoic audio donkeys"
