For our theme month where we are reviewing lesbian arthouse movies for pride month, we take a look at a very interesting film about the creator of Wonder Woman and the women in his life. The film is a well received film entitled PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN (2017)Professor William Marston (Luke Evans) is a professor at Harvard University with his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall). When student Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote) becomes his assistant, the three become entangled in a love triangle. Using his ideas entitled DISC theory, he begins to live his life that way, as well as invent the character of Wonder Woman following the same hypothesis. The film is written and directed by Angela Robinson. Since it did not contact the family and estate of Marston, Elizabeth, and Olive, the film is very much fictional about actual individuals. However, is the film any good and does it have compelling plot points to standout? Your co-hosts take a look at the movie and give their thoughts.

Things get a little more deep and personal (but still fun!) on this episode of Movies For Life as Brian and Michele talk about their picks for Not Really Comic Book Movies. These are films where the creation of certain comic books are an important part of the story, but, as you'll find out in our discussion, are not really what makes them both so important to the hosts. The first movie up this week is from Brian and it is the truly unique, funny and heartwarming AMERICAN SPLENDOR (2003). Then from Michele, the two discuss the importance of queer representation (and so much more!) with PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN (2017)! Michele and Brian also have a quick discussion about their top 5 favorite movie discoveries from 2020! Charlie, Jess, Daniel and Chris discuss the week's films, take a look at the pros and cons of big Hollywood films heading down under, debate whether film or book trilogies are better, and get the lowdown on the Japanese Film Festival from the director, Margarett Cortez.Reviews▸ Murder On The Orient Express▸ Professor Marston And The Wonder Women▸ Conor McGregor: NotoriousTrailers▸ Fifty Shades Freed▸ I, TonyaNews▸ It’s been a great year for filmmaking in Australia - with a record $1.3 billion spent on making movies and TV series for the 2016-17 financial year. We’ve had a big boost from runaway productions like ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, a thriving animation and post-production industry, and original content from local streaming services. With a competitive Australian dollar against the U.S. and great government incentives, isn’t it nice seeing the local film industry doing well while we get a little slice of Hollywood down under?▸ Trilogies are kind of a given these days, every successful film frantically trying to expand itself into a three-part epic whether it was supposed to or not. Research student Kaylin Walker has taken a far more academic look at the trilogy format, and after scouring through Goodreads and IMDb, has come up with a fascinating conclusion: that “movie trilogies get worse, losing favour with each film, while book trilogies secure higher ratings for book two and maintain them for book three.”InterviewThe Japanese Film Festival is in full swing in Australia right now, with audiences across the country flocking to catch a huge range of films. Talkin' PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN with Petula Neale.
Two weeks in a row we have Dave Hart of Pop Culture Case Study to help us figure out our fixation with WONDER WOMAN, other than the fact that it's a very likable movie. We compare that summer crowd pleaser to the crowded love story in the new release PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN. This discussion focuses on the origin of this iconic superhero character and how that has shifted over time, but more importantly if it shifts our opinion of the character as seen in the Patty Jenkins film. Also because we can't behave ourselves, we pitch a sequel with Chris Pine flying the invisible jet in a very special way. This week, Jan recaps several films to see that are still in theaters and some that we can see without leaving the comfort of home.
Jimmy did the press roundtables for PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN while at New York Comic Con. He talked to stars Rebecca Hall and Luke Evans along with writer/director Angela Robinson. How close to the real story is the movie?* How did the couple come together? Are they now (if not before) Wonder Woman comic book readers/fans? Listen in to find out! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Also, get a hold of us! Thanks for listening! *FULL DISCLOSURE. News came out a week after NYCC that the film does not represent the exact truth. A lot of liberties were taken as admitted by the director. We did NOT know this at the time or else we'd have asked about it. Still, I hear it's a pretty good film and worth checking out.
We welcome filmmaker Sean Baker for a discussion of his brilliant new movie, THE FLORIDA PROJECT, then dive into reviews of the civil rights superhero story MARSHALL, the shocking and sensual PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN, and Noah Baumbach's THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES (NEW AND SELECTED) with its revelatory performance by...Adam Sandler?!?
