Angela Robinson Whitehurst returns to the show to bring her Broadway experience to discussing Wicked and the translation from stage to screen. Dr. Gee and Angela discuss the timing of seeing race brought to the forefront of this version of Wicked, compared to when the stage musical was first a part of our culture. The power of fantasy and musical stories is that deep ideas about culture can be explored through an alternate version of our world. It allows us to see the realities of our world through a different lens.  Angela also exposes the way that Black women were not allowed into the Alphoba role before the film version, but now that will be the standard as the significance of the character has been redefined by Blackness. They continue their conversation about Black voices and stories in Hollywood, including having to make representation happen for themselves.  A native of Jacksonville, FL, Angela Robinson is best-known as The Ice Queen Veronica Harrington of Tyler Perry's The Haves and The Have Nots. For her work as Veronica she is the 2015 recipient of the Gracie Award (Best Female Actress – One to Watch). Angela has worked on Broadway, off Broadway and on stages throughout the US and abroad. Broadway productions include The Color Purple with Fantasia, Wonderful Town, Bells Are Ringing, and Play On! She has participated in National Tours of The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, and The Wizard of Oz with Eartha Kitt. Her television/film credits include Law & Order: SVU, Another Bed and several regional and national commercials. She is the Winner of an Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) award for her work as Shug Avery in The Color Purple, Angela has been nominated twice for a Black Theatre Alliance Award (The Color Purple, Dreamgirls), and for an Audelco Award (Radiant Baby). She is also a member of the Tony Award winning Broadway Inspirational Voices. In 2008 Angela and her husband Scott founded the WhiteRobin Group. But if you're looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. Angela is a retired elementary math teacher. She first heard of intermittent fasting in September of 2021. She noticed that a Facebook friend of hers looked great, and she messaged her to find out what she was doing. Her friend told her about Delay, Don't Deny, and Angela not only loved the sound of it, she started the next day.Like so many guests on the podcast, Angela's struggles spanned back to childhood. She dieted for decades, getting heavier and heavier over the years. Finally, in 2015, she found herself at a high of 280 pounds. Desperate, she turned to weight loss surgery. She lost 80 pounds in the first year, but gradually began regaining weight, finding herself back up to about 228.When she begin IF in 2021, she immediately found intermittent fasting to be a sustainable and empowering lifestyle change, reducing guilt and freeing her from constant food struggles. Still, she didn't lose any weight for the first couple of years of her IF journey. Finally, she began to see weight loss, and she has gotten below her lowest post-surgery weight, settling in the range of around 184-189.Gin and Angela discuss the numerous benefits of intermittent fasting beyond weight loss. Angela highlights significant improvements in her skin, reduced brain fog, and enhanced mood. Angela's typical routine involves eating between 2 and 6 pm, focusing on fruits and veggies, and enjoying the flexibility and empowerment that come from having control over her food choices. Angela also notes that her journey with intermittent fasting has positively influenced her family, with her sons adopting healthier habits.Gin and Angela discuss the psychological freedom and lack of restriction that intermittent fasting provides. Angela emphasizes that she continued fasting even during periods when her weight did not decrease simply because of how great she felt overall. As the episode wraps up, Angela advises newcomers to intermittent fasting to stick with it, stressing that substantial results may take time. She underscores the importance of patience, consistency, and a positive mindset, reminding listeners that intermittent fasting is not just about weight loss but about overall well-being and freedom. Through shared experiences and support, both Gin and Angela encourage listeners to embrace intermittent fasting for its holistic benefits, setting a positive example for those around them.Check out our sponsor Zoe at ZOE.com, and use the promo code IFSTORIES10 to get 10% off your membership.Get Gin's books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html. For our theme month where we are reviewing lesbian arthouse movies for pride month, we take a look at a very interesting film about the creator of Wonder Woman and the women in his life. The film is a well received film entitled PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN (2017)Professor William Marston (Luke Evans) is a professor at Harvard University with his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall). When student Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote) becomes his assistant, the three become entangled in a love triangle. Using his ideas entitled DISC theory, he begins to live his life that way, as well as invent the character of Wonder Woman following the same hypothesis. The film is written and directed by Angela Robinson. Since it did not contact the family and estate of Marston, Elizabeth, and Olive, the film is very much fictional about actual individuals. However, is the film any good and does it have compelling plot points to standout? Your co-hosts take a look at the movie and give their thoughts.

Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2014 musical Girltrash: All Night Long for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Girltrash was written by Angela Robinson, who also wrote D.E.B.S., and several episodes of The L Word, which pretty much explains everything about how wild this movie is. If you're looking for a good time, Girltrash delivers. This movie is a time capsule of who's who in lesbian Hollywood in 2014. We struggled with keeping the character's names straight, because every actor is so recognizable from that period of lesbian television. We loved shipping Colby and Misty played by Gabrielle Christian and Mandy Musgrave who have incredible chemistry with one another after South of Nowhere. It is also really fun seeing actors from The L Word appear on screen constantly and with lyrics like “backstage sex rampage” and “first-time sex trampoline”, you really can't have a bad time watching this movie. It is an enjoyable and strangely believable romp. The actors really commit to the character's motivations and pull you into their chaos. We highly recommend watching Girltrash: All Night Long anytime you want to laugh, sing, and experience 2014 lesbian Hollywood. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Girltrash titled “Fantasy” written by Leigh Holmes Foster, produced by Ellie Brigida, and performed by Ellie Brigida and Leigh Holmes Foster. Mathematical Moments from the American Mathematical Society

Angela Robinson explains the math behind the next generation of cryptographic algorithms. Whenever you log in to a website, send an email, or make an online purchase, you're counting on your data being sent securely, without hackers being able to crack the code. Our standard cryptographic systems hinge on mathematical problems that stump present-day computers, like finding the prime factors of a very large number. But in the coming decades, powerful quantum computers are expected to be able to rapidly solve some such problems, threatening the security of our online communications. To develop new methods that can withstand even the most sophisticated quantum computer, cryptographers are using a wide range of mathematical tools, many of which were originally developed without any real-life applications in mind.

Eight years. It took writer/director Angela Robinson eight years to make her film about Wonder Woman's origins. In that time Wonder Woman went from one of the few mainstream DC Comics characters not to have a standalone movie to being a bonafide box office powerhouse. In that time Robinson went from thinking she would never get her movie made to filming it during a hectic 25 days in October 2016, when her cast and crew thought America was about to elect its first female president. Eight years.
