Today, we're diving into our Top 5 Deliveries or Couriers in film, exploring characters and stories where the act of delivering is pivotal, weaving through plots filled with intrigue, action, and high stakes. After our countdown, we'll review the 2024 thriller The Courier, centered around money laundering in Spain, and delve into the samurai action of Blade of the Immortal.Top 5 Deliveries or Couriers in Film:The Transporter (2002) - Jason Statham stars as Frank Martin, a professional "transporter" known for his strict rules about transporting packages, no questions asked. This film is famed for its high-octane action and the moral dilemmas Martin faces when he breaks his own rule.Premium Rush (2012) - Set against the backdrop of Manhattan, this film features Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a bike messenger caught in a deadly chase over a mysterious envelope. The high-speed cycling scenes are a thrill ride, emphasizing the risky side of courier work.Cast Away (2000) - Tom Hanks portrays a FedEx executive whose plane crashes, leaving him stranded on a deserted island. The film contrasts his professional commitment to delivery with his survival struggle, highlighted by his determination to deliver an unopened package.Blade Runner (1982) - Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard delivers justice to rogue replicants in this sci-fi classic. Deckard's role, though not a courier in the traditional sense, is pivotal in delivering societal balance in a dystopian future.John Wick (2014) - This action-packed film pivots around a seemingly mundane delivery—a puppy sent to John Wick, which rekindles his old hitman instincts after a tragic loss, sparking a deadly vendetta. The 2024 film The Courier dives into the dangerous world of money laundering within the picturesque yet deceptive setting of Spain. It follows the intense and risky life of a courier who becomes embroiled in an international scheme far beyond ordinary parcel delivery. The film explores the shadowy intersections of finance, crime, and personal survival, with thrilling sequences that underscore the high stakes of illegal courier activities.Kids Feature: Blade of the Immortal Switching gears, Blade of the Immortal follows a samurai charged with protecting a young girl. His mission to deliver her safely from her enemies embodies the essence of 'delivery' in a broader, more lethal context, offering action and a deep sense of honor amid relentless dangers.Today's episode promises an intriguing exploration of how deliveries, whether mundane or dangerous, shape the narratives and destinies in cinema. Join us as we unpack these delivery-driven adventures, from high-speed chases in Manhattan to the dangerous underbellies of international money laundering.

This week we're slashing through half of feudal Japan because a witch with too much drip magically appeared and sold us some sketchy gummy worms and now we're charging full speed through the forest fighting everybody. Tim & Ren join the panel to discuss Takashi Miike's 100th film (allegedly).
This week, Gavin and I are discussing one of the best martial arts movies of the past decade that you probably missed, and maybe one of the GREATEST Manga adaptations to ever hit the big screen… ‘Blade of the Immortal'! Directed by the visionary action maestro Takashi Miike and based off of the long running manga of the same named created by Hiroaki Samura, this bloody, battle-tactic, Bushido bonanza will leave you on the edge of your seat! The story follows Manji, a samurai cursed with immortality, who reluctantly becomes the bodyguard for Rin, a young woman out for revenge against the ruthless assassins that wiped out her entire clan. Filled with non-stop swordplay, intricate action design, some the coolest manga characters come to life you have ever seen, and a plethora of wild weaponry, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this one! With a truly enthralling performance by iconic J-Pop star and actor Takuya Kimura as our grizzled protagonist Manji, as well as a stellar supporting cast who are as diverse as they are captivating, every scene keeps your eyes glued to the screen as you wait to see what insane scenario our characters find themselves in next. Listen in as we break down everything from the high-intensity swordplay, the genius of director Takashi Miike, and why this film succeeds where others have failed. You can listen to The Martial Arts Mania Podcast on Soundcloud, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and iHeart Podcasts! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!
It's just me and Cyrus this week. We start off strong by demonstrating our total lack of knowledge when it comes to American geography. Then we jump into discussing the film, as per usual. Later on, we dive into listener questions and discuss musical collaborations, whether Jackie Chan or Sammo Hung is the better director and making friends as an adult. Enjoy!
On the surface, the samurai epic Blade of the Immortal is all about the violence, with its gorgeous splash pages of kaleidoscopic dismemberment. Created by Hiroaki Samura, a manga artist about whom very little is known, Blade of the Immortal follows a familiar outline: a young girl named Rin seeks to kill the group of swordsmen responsible for the murder of her family. But Samura's ambitions are greater, and as Rin and her hired hitman Manji make headway into her quest, her feelings about her vengeance grow more complicated. Blade of the Immortal is a 31-volume epic that ran from 1993-2012. In this episode, we'll scratch the surface and take a look at the first six volumes.

Today on the Movies We've Never Seen Podcast, Mike is joined by his good friend Patrick where they watch Takashi Miike's Blade of the Immortal. Will it be a flop? Will it be a masterpiece, will we be underwhelmed? Listen to find out. Mike also has a non movie related podcast with Patrick where he rambles about random topics called All Downhill. You can check that out on Twitter @alldownhillshow or at their home page. This episode does contain *SPOILERS* for Blade of the Immortal as well as Takashi Miike's Visitor Q. This podcast may contain STRONG LANGUAGE and ADULT THEMES. Not Recommended for children. This episode is Rated R. On The Movies We've Never Seen Podcast, we talk about a movie that one or more of the hosts have not seen. In the fist half of the episode, we talk about our pre-viewing thoughts, expectations and impressions about it punctuated by a small trivia quiz and other fun facts. We then give the movie a tentative rating (on a scale of 0-5 Snake Plisskens) based on the discussion. We then come to the intermission, where we take a break and watch the film in question. In the second half we have a similar conversation and discuss our post-viewing thoughts and see how right, wrong or on the nose we were about the film and give it our final rating. In this episode, we travel back to feudal Japan to cover our first manga. Blade of the Immortal ran for almost twenty years of blood, brutality, sword fights, and immortality. The protagonist Manji, with his cursed blood worms and twelve blades, travels the roads of old Edo as he cuts down members of the Itto-Ryu, a samurai gang that murdered the parents of the young girl he vowed to help and protect. In this story arc, Manji has quite possibly met his match as he has a roadside showdown with three of their more dangerous members. Dismemberment and anachronistic slang abound as our scarred and immortal anti-hero locks swords with the Itto-Ryu members in a bloody chapter of a sanguinary story.
