Best Picture Winners: REBECCA and THE APARTMENT

March means awards season in the movie world so here on Movies for Life we're doing a couple episodes in the month of March having to do with the Oscars. For today's episode, we've chosen a couple of our personal favorite movies from the Oscars' history of Best Picture winners! First we discuss Michele's choice, the Best Picture winner of 1940 - Alfred Hitchcock's REBECCA. It's definitely not your typical romance story, and we have a great time breaking down all the wildly interesting characters and salacious plot points in this wonderful adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's novel. Then we move on to another amazing film from another amazing director for Brian's pick, the Best Picture winner of 1960 - Billy Wilder's THE APARTMENT. A movie as equally daring as REBECCA, this one is also emotionally moving while tackling some serious subjects, all of it spearheading by great directing and powerhouse performances from Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, and Fred MacMurray. Thank you all so much for listening and enjoy the show! Follow us on social media:  Movies for Life podcast: @MovieLifePod Brian Keiper: @Brianwaves42 Michele Eggen: @micheleeggen

'Ello, snotfaces! Welcome back to Movies for Life where this week we have a wonderful double feature of two movies with very sweet messages at their core, but at the same time are also dealing with some serious stuff. It's all about the power of the imaginary friend and what they represent and can do for just about everyone around them. First up for discussion is Brian's choice of the absolute classic, a movie starring one of the podcast's most talked about actors Jimmy Stewart, 1950's HARVEY. Then it's a childhood classic for Michele's pick, the zany and imaginative DROP DEAD FRED from 1991. We have much more focused discussions about both of these films that hopefully get to the deep meaning that is truly behind them both, so we really hope you enjoy the conversation!  Follow us on social media:  Movies for Life podcast: @MovieLifePod Brian Keiper: @Brianwaves42 Michele Eggen: @micheleeggen

It's cold out there! And since it is that winter time of year for many people, we at Movies for Life are bringing you some snowbound movies to talk about. We have a couple of truly great ones this week, starting with Michele's pick of the 2011 survival drama THE GREY. Though it was marketed as just being Liam Neeson vs wolves in the snow, we get into why this movie is really so much more than that and therefore should be talked about a lot more! Then we tackle a true cinematic classic with Brian's choice - the Coen brothers' masterpiece FARGO. There is definitely a lot of imitating of the Minnesota accent, but there's also talk about why Marge is the best character ever, and really just some of our absolute favorite scenes, shots, and lines from this iconic film. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Movies for Life listeners! We hope you all are having a wonderful and happy holiday season however you celebrate or don't! Here on the show, we're having a very Sly Christmas by celebrating actor Sylvester Stallone with two movies of his that don't have anything to do with Christmas but take place around the holiday! First we discuss FIRST BLOOD from 1982 directed by Ted Kotcheff. Though the other films in this series just get bigger and bloodier, this first installment is a very serious, dramatic, and yeah still fun movie with an amazing cast all just absolutely killing it. Then we drop all the drama nothing but bonkers fun with the next movie - 1986's COBRA. It's all the cliches you could ever want from an 80s cop action movie, and that's exactly why we love this one. We hope you have fun with this episode, and as always, thank you all so much for listening! Keeping up with our noir-ish theme for this month, on this week's episode of Movies for Life, we're tackling a couple of Michele's absolute favorite kinds of films - mysteries! And these are some truly banger titles so we know you'll dig them! First up is Brian's choice of an early Hitchcock masterpiece, 1938's THE LADY VANISHES. It's a mystery, it's an espionage thriller, it's a comedy, it's a romance-on-the-road - this movie really has it all and we have a really fun time talking about it! Then we get into Michele's pick which is one of the twistiest and turniest of all the mysteries out there, from 1973 it's THE LAST OF SHEILA! This film has such a genius plot and that's really no surprise considering the minds that it came from; plus the cast is absolutely star-studded as well! We hope you all enjoy this one! This month on Movies for Life we're doing our own version of Noirvember with a couple of episodes about crime and mystery! For our episode this week, we're robbing banks and talking about two very different approaches to the bank heist film. First up for discussion is Brian's choice, the 1961 Hammer film CASH ON DEMAND. This movie has a lot of things that both of us like - Peter Cushing, great character development and exploration, a short runtime, and a single location! It's a wonderful little film that we hope more people will check out. Then we get into Michele's pick, the 2001 dark comedy teen film SUGAR & SPICE! It's a PG-13 movie that still feels like an R movie with the witty and raunchy dialogue. And while it is a hell of a lot of fun to watch and laugh at and with, it's also one that is very clever at what it both plays into and riffs on. We hope you enjoy this pairing! We're back with another spooky season episode for you and another pair of great ghost movies to talk about! Going in reverse chronological order this time, we're starting off with a movie that came out in a banger year for movies - 1999 - and this one is no exception. We're talking STIR OF ECHOES, and all the things that make it a fantastic little gem of a ghost movie. Based on a novel by Richard Matheson, and written and directed for the screen by David Koepp, it's got all the talent behind and in front of the camera and we have a great time dissecting why it all works so well. Then we get into a stone cold classic of the ghost genre with 1980's THE CHANGELING starring George C. Scott. This one gives us not only everything we could want from a ghost/haunted house tale, but also a very deep and emotional look at grief in the main character's story. We've got one more spooky episode left for you before the month ends so keep an eye out for that, and we hope you've enjoyed everything we've put out so far! Happy Halloween! Both of our favorite subgenre of horror is ghosts so that is what we are doing the whole month here on the pod - with a couple bonus episodes in there for you too! But first we take a look at a couple of haunted house movies, starting with Jack Clayton's THE INNOCENTS from 1961. Iconic haunted house imagery that still works like gangbusters aside, this story is made so much more compelling with its unreliable main characters and the fact that by the end, you're still just not really sure what all has transpired here. Then we talk about a movie that is equally as compelling, the Guillermo del Toro produced and J.A. Bayona directed THE ORPHANAGE from 2007. Is this fairy tale-laden story sad, tragic, bittersweet, or all of these rolled into one at the same time? In the second part of our little series all about high school movies, we're taking things a bit into the future with a look at some films about high school reunions. With all the memories and expectations about how our lives should be, this is arguably a more stressful and confusing experience than high school itself, and both of these films capture all of that so well. First we get into Michele's choice and her movie namesake, ROMY & MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION from 1997. It's quirky, it's fun, it's colorful and oh-so 90s, but it still has some pretty profound things to say about life. Then we get into Brian's movie pick from 2013, THE WORLD'S END. The most mature and sometimes most dark film from Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg's Cornetto Trilogy, THE WORLD'S END may be about aliens with blue ink inside them on the surface, but underneath it is so much more. What would summer be without a little adventure! And sometimes it's even more fun when it's a "kidventure", so we're going back to our childhoods with this episode on a couple of our favorite kid-led adventure stories. The first one we talk about is probably the quintessential movie in this category - Brian's pick is Richard Donner's THE GOONIES from 1985. You know it, you probably love it, and it was most likely a staple of your childhood, too! We try to pinpoint just why this one still works for us after all these years, whether it be personal connections or just those little moments in the film that really make it special. Then Michele introduces Brian to a favorite from her childhood, 1995's HEAVYWEIGHTS! A throwback to the irreverent movies and TV shows for kids from the 90s, this is one that has really only gotten better over the years because of the important message at its core. Plus, it has one of Ben Stiller's best performances ever, AND a great dance sequence from Paul Fieg, so what's not to love?! Happy listening - and please don't put Twinkies on your pizza. Batter up, Movies for Life listeners, because we're talking about a pair of great baseball movies today on the show! Though there are a lot of movies to pick from in this category, we picked the two that have either touched us the most or, in Michele's case, have meant a lot to us our whole lives. So first up is that movie, Michele's choice of Penny Marshall's A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (1992). This one has a ton of great moments but we try to focus on the core of what makes it a great movie - Tom Hanks' performance, the sister relationship, etc. We also give our answers to the big question about the ending - does Dottie drop the ball on purpose? Then we get into another comedy, one a bit more rough around the edges but still with a lot of heart, and that is THE BAD NEWS BEARS from 1976. This story of an alcoholic Walter Matthau coaching the worst Little League team is equal parts hilarious and heartfelt in its portrayal of relationships and lessons learned while playing the game that is America's past time. Our first movie is Michele's pick of Luis Bunuel's BELLE DE JOUR from 1967, a fascinating and at times complex and complicated story of a woman's choice to secretly enter sex work as a way to work through her issue and explore her masochistic fantasies. Then we jump to the 2021 movie LAST NIGHT IN SOHO for Brian's choice. Vicious Christmas: P2 and CHRISTMAS EVIL

Happy Holidays, Movies For Life listeners! This year to celebrate Christmas, we decided to get a little MEAN with our movie picks and talk about a couple of our favorite Christmas horror movies. First up, we're talking about Michele's pick - a 2000s horror gem that deserves a lot more love, Franck Khalfoun's P2 from 2007! Rachel Nichols and Wes Bentley battle it out in an underground parking garage on Christmas Eve, and we love watching it all play out in this genuinely well done, solid little thriller (that's also surprisingly gory at times!). Then it's time for Brian's pick, a recent favorite of his that also deserves a lot more love - 1980's CHRISTMAS EVIL (aka YOU BETTER WATCH OUT). With its unbelievable lead performance and compelling characterization, this movie is way more than just your typical killer Santa story. We get into it all in our discussion - especially that ending! Thank you all for listening and we hope you have a wonderful holiday season! Maligned Horror Sequels: PSYCHO III and FRIDAY THE 13th PART V: A NEW BEGINNING

Get ready for the most random movie selection and one of the most bonkers pairings of movies we've done so far on Movies for Life! We are both big horror fans and we really haven't talked about THAT much horror on the show, so we came up with this random episode for that strange in-between time after Thanksgiving and before Christmas. So today we are talking about some often maligned horror sequels that we both actually really dig! First up is Brian's pick of the directorial debut of Anthony Perkins, a sequel to the movie that made him famous forever - PSYCHO III from 1986! We both think it's still just as good as the first sequel, PSYCHO II, if not a bit sleazy (but we're okay with that). And speaking of even more sleaze, the next movie to discuss is Michele's choice of 1985's FRIDAY THE 13th PART V: A NEW BEGINNING, directed by Danny Steinmann! It may not have Jason but it has Michele's favorite kill of the whole franchise and Brian's favorite character of the whole franchise! Happy Thanksgiving, Movies for Life listeners! Seeing how it is that time of the year right now, it seemed only fitting that our episode today deals with movies all about FOOD! The preparation and appreciation of food, the artistry of the creation, how food brings us all together, and even... how sexy food can be? That's in the second movie we're talking about, but up first we have Brian's pick of the 1987 Danish film BABETTE'S FEAST. It's a beautifully calm and simple story about giving and receiving the gift of food, and ultimately its healing nature. Then things get a lot more wild, but still just as heartfelt, with Michele's pick of the 1985 Japanese comedy TAMPOPO! It's a fun ride through this anthology of sorts, as there are several hilarious vignettes interspersed within this main "ramen western" story about the journey to create the best bowl of ramen. Happy Halloween season, Movies for Life listeners! We hope you're having a great time with however you celebrate if you do, perhaps with plenty of scary movies. We thought we would change things up just a bit for spooky month, so instead of talking about those traditional Halloween movies that frankly get talked about enough this time of year, we thought we would highlight a couple of films that really give us the feeling of the season. First up in the conversation is Michele's pick of PRACTICAL MAGIC from 1998, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman and directed by Griffin Dunne (yes THAT Griffin Dunne!). It's an admittedly weird and chaotic little movie but at its core has a very warm and enjoyable story about the bonds of women and sisters. Then we move on to Brian's pick which is Steven Spielberg's classic E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (1982). What is it about that little alien that can still capture our hearts and imaginations all these years later? We discuss it all in the episode, so listen now!  Follow the hosts and show on Twitter: Movies For Life podcast: @MovieLifePod Brian Keiper: @Brianwaves42 Michele Eggen: @micheleneggen

So this episode was supposed to be about underrated films from our favorite horror director, Wes Craven... buuuuut we both ended up not really feeling one of our initial choices, so it's mostly just an episode about one movie! We do still talk a little about that other choice - 2010's MY SOUL TO TAKE - and we both feel it's definitely worth talking about and reevaluating! But the main topic here is a gem in more ways than one, RED EYE from 2005. Hear how the main character of Lisa Reisert played by Rachel McAdams is a seriously underrated heroine (CW/TW for sexual assault and trauma discussion); how Brian can relate even THIS movie to A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET; and overall just how much we appreciate and enjoy this one. It's been a while, listeners, but if you were itching for us to get into some more remake discussion on Movies for Life, here we are! Though there was really only one choice for the original film we talk about, there were actually several different possibilities for its "remake" - or at least an interpretation of the original story - so we hope you all dig the pairing we chose! So, up for discussion for our third Remakes episode is an undisputed classic, and really one of the best movies ever made - Akira Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI from 1954; and then to pair with it we have the remake of the remake, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN from 2016, directed by Antoine Fuqua. With such a daunting original film, we take the approach of discussing both films at the same time, looking at those core seven characters in each, and how they match up or differ from each other (while also of course talking about so many other things we love from both films). This one was a lot of fun and we hope you all enjoy! Thank you so much for listening! We apologize if this episode isn't quite your tempo... but it should be! Because we have two awesome movies to talk about today on Movies for Life, all about musicians and somewhat "explosive" drummers. First we worry about whether we're rushing or dragging in talking about the anxiety-inducing stress-fest that is 2014's WHIPLASH! We discuss the brilliant and enigmatic performance of JK Simmons; the pressure and struggle of wanting to be great and still have a happy life; and just the overall exceptional way this story is told. Then we switch gears almost completely and spend the next hour laughing our way through Rob Reiner's classic rock mockumentary, THIS IS SPINAL TAP from 1984! You know the lines and the jokes, and yes, pretty much all of them are repeated here in this episode, but that's the true joy of a movie like this. Brian talks about the reality of many of the situations portrayed in the movie, and we give high praise to the standout performances of Christopher Guest and Michael McKean (even though everyone kills it in this movie!). And we have two amazing films to talk about so let's get right to it. First up is Michele's pick of UNFAITHFUL from 2002, directed by Adrian Lyne and starring Diane Lane and Richard Gere. And while yes, the sex scenes in this movie are very steamy, it's the incredibly complex and nuanced performances from the two stars and the way their relationship is handled that really makes this a standout film. Then up next in the discussion we have Cruise. Kidman. Kubrick. That's right, it's Stanley Kubrick's last film, his masterpiece from 1999, EYES WIDE SHUT. Hail to the king, baby! The King of Horror, that is! This week on Movies For Life, we're talking about a couple of our favorite film adaptations of the works of the one and only Stephen King. First up on the episode is Michele's pick of PET SEMATARY from 1989, directed by Mary Lambert. The darkly comic meditation on grief and death still packs a huge punch to both of us, especially as we realize our personal reasons for feeling that way and how this story might actually be the most terrifying one King has ever written. Then we discuss Brian's pick of John Carpenter's 1983 film version of CHRISTINE! It's a film that has moved up in the ranks for both of us in terms of Carpenter movies and King adaptations, and we talk about all the reasons why. How we both see the main characters in different ways than we have before, and the very real symbolism behind just what a "Christine" can really mean and do to a person.  Follow the hosts and the show on Twitter: Movies For Life podcast: @MovieLifePod Brian Keiper: @BrianDKeiper Michele Eggen: @micheleneggen
